• PS3 Hacks , 28.02.2010

A widespread crash has occured today for “phat”  PS3 users resulting in a “8001050F” error.

Here are the symptoms to this problem:

    • Can not connect to PSN
    • Hardware failure. Cannot update Firmware or connect to Internet”
    • Cannot enter any BR games (Trophy errors, kicks you out; “Can’t register trophy information. The game will now quit”)
    • Cant play downloaded titles (demos work).
    • Trophy information deleted
    • PS3 date/setting set to December 31, 1999

This is most likely a firmware related bug but there are also rumors that this may be a PSN hack as a page on Sony PS3 website has a small memo from someone not too happy:

    http://us.playstation.com/PS3/dearplaystation/

“get flash and/or enable javascript and stop wasting my time.”

Sony has tweeted with the following on the matter:

“We’re aware that many of you are having problems connecting to PSN, and yes, we’re looking into it. Stay tuned for updates.”

We will keep you updated on the latest progress

My slim and phat are working fine. I have a BC 80 gig and I tried to connect to PSN no problem. When I look online everyone that is connected all have slims. Crazy that mt phat one can connect and most others cant. Is it maybe because I have a slim on the same network as a phat.

This may be the launchpad conspiracy for otheros removal via update.

LOL. The thought did cross my mind. However unlikely.

ALSO! DO NOT PLAY ANYTHING UNTIL A FIX IS ANNOUNCED!

yup. its definitely something to do with the time/leap year and effecting the drm to make certain checks invalid. that's why we get booted, because one check is checking the date of purchase but the machine's reset date has told it its nots valid and won't boot it past a certain part. almost any game that has trophies, dlc, or bought themes have that purchase date i imagine are effected if trying to load them. the ps3 is just confused and doing what's its programmed to do in a time like this. i can't boot any psn games but my free wipeout hd dynamic theme works.

this is purely human error on programming.

this also could be one of the security flaws that made sony remove the otheros feature from the slims.

if it was a programming error then why is my fat ps3 still online

Then go ahead and explain your theory on why only fat ps3's are effected.

My theory involves the system not being able to add/subract a date from it being a leap year. something the system has not encountered until now. and because of that glitch, the system has reset the date and porked anything with a creation/purchase date that tries to load.

Yea, I got the error when I was playing heavy rain demo. I had my ps3 on for hours today and it was fine until I played demo.I think it happens if you play a new enough game or demo.If you're still online with phat you probably didn't try one of these games. I'm not sure that's the reason, but it seems like it to me. My ps3 is 60gb model. Still hooks to internet browser works just not PSN.

i am effected but i can still play demos and browse the internet, just anything that involves psn for anything is fubared for me.

I have a few ps3s so I turned the internet off in my house plugged another system up and guess what same problem I was amazed. So no conspiracy's goin on M8, Guess the ps3 saves trophy info to be sent when ps3 is connected online to the server.,

"This week on psn. We kick the week off with a schoolboy error, that will disable thousands of consoles for 24 hours while users of the slim console get a bit of breathing space to see what online gaming is all about. Mid week we continue with our efforts to piss fat ps3 users off, by releasing an update that will remove otherOS functionality. We then finish the week off with our usual ps home update, which we will continue in our lets piss the users of approach, by giving the US a big update while EU users will not really get anything, and we will include 3 new demo's on the psn and add 1 full game to our lineup."

I think that about sums thing up on the ps scene atm, what do you think?

OK, decided to take a chance and take my PS3 apart to unplug the RTC clock battery. Surprisingly enough, it was much easier to get to than I would have expected. On my 40GB non BC model (US), the battery sits just under the blu-ray drive, and so only taking the top cover and then moving the drive over a little bit is required. It's unplugged now and waiting a bit before putting it all back together.

I can confirm that by removing the clock battery and waiting about 2 minutes before replacing it does actually fix this problem. I'd only attempt this if you are confident that you can do this without messing anything up. My ps3 was slightly different to the one pictured above, I had to take the metal plates off the motherborad to access the battery. I hope this helps since i know that there are a lot of pissed off people out there.

This is the fix. I was saying it from the moment people talked about the issue being related to the clock. Clear the CMOS fix your problem. If people weren't so scared about voiding their non-existent warranty on old fat PS3s lol... Sony can't really do jack squat because it's an internal time issue, you have the option to wait until roll-over or open your PS3 and clear the CMOS, nothing Sony can do remotely except fix the error in code so it doesn't happen again in the future. What you do at this point is irrelevant to any "fix" Sony comes out with lol...

If the bug doesnt get fixed or resolve itself, lie the ps3 in the horizontal position, attach a metal face instead of the standard black ps3 face, and cook your bacon, eggs and hash browns on it every morning, at least you will have a new breakfast oven rather than a door stop XD

i was still actually going to remove the battery because i'm that impatient haha but unfortunately it's not right underneath the bluray like in the pics (must be because i've got a NTSC system)

anyways here's more information from that employee:
      http://community.eu.playstation.com/...316858#M127033

      All,

Please note that I am now out of the office until 10AM tomorrow morning.

I'm concerned that some of you are considering removing the internal battery from your PlayStation 3 system. Please do not do this -you risk damaging your console and voiding your warranty, both of which really are not worth it for the sake of a few hours.

Our previous advice still stands: We hope to have the problem solved within 24 hours (about 21 now, if you've been counting :smileytongue and you should avoid using your console until then.

I have given my phone number out to everyone who will be "in the know" about further updates on this issue. Our teams across SCE are working flat-out to fix the problem for you. Should anything come through, either myself or one of the moderators on shift tonight will post the update for you.

I'll also be jumping on and checking PSN tonight from midnight with my own console, just in case :smileywink: I'll let you know the results.

As an aside - thank you all for your patience today. I appreciate that it has been frustrating and I am thankful to all of you for keeping the forum tidy and insult free!

Much love to all - MB

The battery is different places in all PS3 models (on top or bottom of MOBO). It is a time/hardware issue, it SHOULD automatically be fixed in 24 hours or you can expect a firmware update. I recommend not resetting your PS3 battery, just wait a few more hours and have the problem out for good

What's apparently effed, as speculation goes, is when the internal GMT-tracking rolls over to 3/1. It's either not rolling, or rolling to 2/29, at which point a system tries to add/subtract from 2/29, which it can't do because the front-end calendar doesn't have a 2/29/2010, and $#!T explodes. Seemed to happen around 4PM PDT, which I think is 12AM GMT, so.

And the PS3 launched in 2006; it's hit 4 2/28s so far. 2007 and 2009 were odd-numbered years; 2008 was an even, and a leap year. 2010 is the first even non-leap-year the system's been around for. If some sort of base-level math is choking on itself, it may have ruled out the odd 2007 and 2009 successfully, but is convinced the even 2010 is a leap year (this part I'm less sure of, but is why leap year could theoretically come into play at some point.)

It's not a PSN server issue, neither CECHL04 models nor slims had the problem, and online worked well.
It is a hardware problem in the front panel of the PS3, should happen again if not fixed in a few years.

My PS3 is working just peachy, working with a phat 40GB.

The only thing I did was re-sync my PS3's Time with the internet. Date/Time settings, resync with Internet, GTG.
