Just to knock some sense into people….

Team OrganiX: proof of concept PS3 exploit in the works, more details will be revealed soon.

  • Posted by Pirate , on 20/06/2010 , @ 07:45pm

Update: This is not an exploit, it will not lead to any actual hombrew.

Esteemed reverse engineer SKFU is at it again, he has released an Exploit Loader and a hello world.

Here is a quote from his blog:

So here is the result of the simple idea. The first code which is 100% PS3 only compatible. No flash, no bd-java or similar.

This is a beta version of the POC as I’m too tired to finish it now but I don’t wanna’ let you wait so long. Here you go:

    How 2 Use:

    1. Install loader.p3t like a common theme file.
    2. Put loadme.fu on an USB stick’s root dir.
    3. Insert USB device into any PS3 USB port.
    4. Enable the the theme you just installed before.
    5. Hello World.

    How It Works:

The PS3 theme file is able to load the loadme.fu script from any USB port. The script is executed. The “loader” is for future-use aswell to load any .fu files which I’ll release.

    Stay tuned for updates!

While most of the cases that i have reported about, have come from America, this one comes from the opposite of the world, Australia.

Michael Trebilcock a 25 year old from a town called Modbury, is suing Sony for $800AU, for the removal of the Other OS function, here is a quote from the source:

Mr Trebilcock’s complaint is with the “Install Other OS” feature included in the PlayStation 3 he bought in March 2007.

The feature allowed PlayStation users to replace the standard PS3 operating system with a different one, such as Linux - a popular free alternative to Windows available for download on the internet - allowing them to use the device as a personal computer as well as a video games console.

However, an “optional upgrade” introduced by Sony on April 1 deleted the feature - rendering useless any other programs already downloaded to the console.

Mr Trebilcock has lodged a claim at Holden Hill Magistrates Court where he is seeking $800 from Sony - a figure he said was reached by calculating how much it would cost to rent a laptop for each day the component has been removed - plus $116 in fees. He said the function had been “praised by Sony as the most powerful feature of the PS3″ ahead of the machine’s launch, and was the main reason for his purchase.

“One of the reasons I bought (the PS3) was for this feature - it allowed you to use the PS3 as a computer, not just a games console,” Mr Trebilcock said.

“You could attach printers to it and print documents, you could use Messenger and Firefox web browsing.

“But (Sony) decided that particular part of the system, which they had marketed as one of the reasons for buying it, was posing a security risk, and removed it.”

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia said the feature was removed because of security issues, and said it had been part of an “optional” software update.

“Whilst we are mindful of the impact that this decision may have on affected users, we nevertheless felt compelled to (remove the function) due to security concerns,” Sony wrote in a letter to PlayStation 3 buyers after the change, a copy of which has been lodged with the court.

“Given the very small number of users taking advantage of this option, we feel that it is a prudent safeguard for the ongoing development of the product which will ultimately benefit all PlayStation 3 users.”

The letter points to a warning on the PS3 packaging which states “design and specifications are subject to change without notice”.

But Mr Trebilcock said the console was “almost useless” if owners did not carry out the update, because failure to do so would prevent them from playing games online, chatting to other users or playing future game releases.

“They claim it’s optional. However, if you don’t update you can’t play online games and you can’t play new Blu-Ray titles in the future and you can’t talk to anyone online,” he said.

“It becomes almost useless … You could use it to watch DVDs and maybe a little bit of web browsing, but for game playing - and a lot of it is online now - by not updating it’s pretty much useless.

“So for all intents and purposes it’s a mandatory update.”

Anand Lal Shimpi from AnandTech, just recently got a new shiny slim Xbox 360, most of us would be delighted and sit down and play the machine, but not Anand, he ripped his apart, for our pleasure/enjoyment/curiosity, here is a quote from his site, followed by a selection of the images.

Today UPS dropped off my Xbox 360 Slim (codename Valhalla) and I did exactly what you’d expect me to: run power numbers on it and take the whole thing apart. I’ve posted pics of the system compared to the old Jasper Xbox 360 here and a gallery of my dissection of the system here. Expect to see some power and noise data soon followed by a detailed dissection guide. And if you’re looking to get your hands on one the Microsoft Store apparently got a shipment of around 20,000 boxes and aren’t anywhere near selling them all out.

    Enjoy :)

As we reported here, RichDevX made an untested patch, while many on IRC and on the forum tried to get it to work, it just wouldnt.

NTAuthority a member of HaXNetwork, has successfully created a patch that works, here is a quote from his Read Me.

As with the original application, this requires Windows 7 (any version)
and a WLAN card in your computer for the initial pairing. Also, PS3
firmware 3.30+ is required to use PC Remote Play.

As it is compiled with Visual Studio 2008, the Visual C++ 2008 runtime
(non-SP1) is also required, but there’s enough chance you already have
it installed (and Sony’s application requires it too).

If you don’t have the VAIO Remote Play application itself, download it
from the official Sony site (http://tinyurl.com/sonyvrp) and install.

For full installation, make sure you read the Read Me and give NTAuthority thanks when you can.

Team-Xecuter have released their latest version of LT Switch Liteon DVD mod products, it seems to be very user friendly, here are the details.

We are pleased to announce the completion of the latest in our line of LT Switch Liteon DVD mod products, the LT Clip + LT Switch v2.

Production has just begun so we will give you a delivery date shortly.

This kit has been designed with the beginner in mind. It’s been in development for a while due to the absolute precision and stability needed to make sure it works for the the lifetime of the DVD Drive with no soldering or glue for trace repairs. We have even included a built in continuity tester to make sure your trace cuts are perfect.

Installation is simple. Make 3 trace cuts (The same as LT Switch v1.X), fit the LT Clip PCB to the Liteon PCB and use the continuity test button to make sure your cuts are correct (Green LED = Good, Red LED = bad). Once you have a Green LED you then fit the specially designed clip to fix the PCB in place. That’s it !

The LT Clip can be used with either the new LT Switch v2 or the CK3 Probe II. The first batch will be shipped bundled with the LT Switch v2 and then there will be options later.

We expect the cost for the complete LT Clip & LT Switch v2 bundle kit to be no more than $19.95.

    * If you are skilled and can solder then you can use the LT Switch v1.5.
    * If you are a multiple modder who can solder but wants to be fast and cost effective then you have the CK3 Probe II
    * If you are a beginner who has no soldering skills or equipment, doesn’t want to buy or use conductive glue and doesn’t want the expense to post their console to someone for modding - then the LT Clip solution is perfect for you.

Now everyone has a solution to meet their skills and budget.

Microsofts 2010 E3 presentation has come and gone, and was it awesome.

The first great game was announced by Hideo Kojima and introduced by Shiganobu Matsayama, it is called, Metal Gear Solid Rising and stars Raiden, the graphics were stunning and beautiful, the game seems to take a “Zan datsu” theme, which means cut everything and thats what Raiden did in the trailer, he sliced and diced a van and several enemies.

A few other games were also demoed, which are, Gears Of Wars 3, which has a new beast mode, Fable 3, Codename Kingdoms and Halo Reach.

Then it went on to the Kinect presentation, which was quite astounding, here is a list of things you can do:
Control your console with movement and voice commands.
Video chat with your Xbox Live friends and MSN friends, you can also watch movies with them.
The camera tracks your movement automatically.
Watch movies, only using your voice and hands.

The presentation went on to talk about the games, here is a list of some of the games:
Kinectimals, a game where you can interact with one of 48 animals and participate in 90 activities.
Kinect sports, which includes Football, Bowling and Boxing amongst other sports related games.
Kinect Joy Ride, a racing game.
Kinect Adventures, a a game where you use your whole body and play through 20 adventures.

Ubisoft revealed a game called Your Shape Fitness Evolved, and Harmonix revealed a dance game called Dance Central, which has
    600 moves and 90 routines.
Lucas Arts also revealed that they are working on a Kinect based game.
The last Kinect game that was showcased was Forza Motor Sport.

Kinect will go on sale this November the 4th in North America and will have 15 games at launch.

The most exciting part was the end, where Microsoft revealed a smaller redesigned Xbox 360 console, it is black, sexy, it will have a 250GB HDD, with built in Wireless N and will sell for the great price of $299, better still, it goes on sale today.

Thats the end of my Microsoft report, hope you enjoyed reading.

According to Xbox-Scene, it seems some one messed up and put out advertisements for what seems to be a new 360 SKU,which one would assume is the rumoured slim version, it is reported to have a 250GB HDD, built in WiFi and will be compatible with Kinect(Project Natal), which i reported about here.

With Microsofts E3 presentation, in a few hours it seems strange that they couldn’t hold of until then, to reveal the final details of their motion device for Xbox 360 and PC, which was previously known as Project Natal.

    BBC’s News Website Reports:

Microsoft has revealed final details of its Xbox 360 hands-free motion control system, which it has rebranded Kinect.

The device, which was originally codenamed Project Natal, was showcased ahead of the opening of the E3 games expo, which starts on 15 June in LA.

Microsoft has said Kinect will hit shelves before the end of the year.

It will face competition from Sony’s PlayStation Move controller and Nintendo’s upgraded WiiMotion Plus.

I made this thread a while back, showing mostly everything about Sony’s new motion controller, as its coming up to E3 and the PS3 Move will be a hot topic, i thought id show you the schematics, with images sourced from Siliconera.
