    UPDATE: Tons of updates at end of post. This is it ladies and gentleman, the moment you have been all waiting for, cancel your pre-orders and start your engines – the PSJailbreak open source, free scene solution is out – PSGroove!

    Now we can make our OWN PSJailbreak clone, and I am glad to say at a very cheap price :) . All you need is either a Teensy++ USB Development Board or AT90USBKEY, and follow

    If you plan on ordering a Teensy++ know that it has shortages and even more quite soon:

    Update, Tuesday, Aug 31, 5:41 PM: We have received a higher than usual volume of orders for this item, and we’re working to ship orders as quickly as possible. Current wait time is approximately 2 days. As of Tuesday 5:41PM these boards ARE IN STOCK. We have enough inventory to fill all pending orders! If we do run out due to high demand, we expect to have more available in approximately 2 weeks, and we will fill any backorders in the order they were received. If you want one of these boards, your best bet is to place an order now. Please understand PJRC is a small company and we are currently running about 2 days to fill orders, though we’re hoping to fully catch up soon!

    From the readme of PSGroove:

    This is the PSGroove, an open-source reimplementation of the psjailbreak exploit for AT90USB and related microcontrollers.

    It should work on:

    * AT90USB162
    * AT90USB646
    * AT90USB647
    * AT90USB1286
    * AT90USB1287
    * ATMEGA32U4

    … and maybe more.

    This software is not intended to enable piracy, and such features have been disabled. This software is intended to allow the execution of unsigned third-party apps and games on the PS3.

    PSGroove Git Repository can be found here (contains all the files you need and everything to get started + download):

      If you ordered a Teeny or the Atmel Dev Board then it should be programmable via usb.

      Even if I do port it, and get it to work... How would I make homebrew? LOL All i got is the incomplete leaked SDK from like 2008 and the newer leaked documents... So how would I package the SELF files to PKG and stuff? Or even compile to ELF?

      I don't have much time to port it, only may be during the weekends, being a full time student sucks LOL

      Well I just ordered my board today, its planning on coming next week . Two questions:

      First: Is this code release missing the ability to backup games?

      "This software is not intended to enable piracy, and such features have been disabled. This software is intended to allow the execution of unsigned third-party apps and games on the PS3."

      WTF!!!!???!!?!???

      Second: Given the information on the website, is a more ignorant person like myself able to follow without needing to have actual programming skills>

      but I do know java quite well, gotta stop selling myself so short.

      p.s
      I WANT PIRACY!!!!! Didn't a get a fcking BlockBuster pass & 320 gig toshiba external harddrive formatted to FAT32 for nothing, those damn bastards!!

      I hope the hackers concentrate ob getting this to run from PSP, atleast improved sales of PSP units. Sony lost the cat and mouse battle with the PSP will the PS3 be the same? If I had one drive for backups and another for originals would I be detected? PS Groove - Atmel USB Controllers Programming How To:

      Yes thats it....i wrote a quick PS Groove Tutorial.

      First of all go to http://github.com/psgroove/psgroove and download the PS Groove HEX file psgroove.hex

      And of course you need one of these Atmel USB Controllers:

      * AT90USB162
      * AT90USB646
      * AT90USB647
      * AT90USB1286
      * AT90USB1287
      * ATMEGA32U4

      Now let's start:

      Device Firmware Upgrade

      The first thing to do after you recived your AtMel USB Controller is to load the HEX file into the on-chip flash memory
      of the microcontroller. The "Flip" Software is the tool used to upgrade the firmware (available freely from the USB CD-ROM
      or Atmel Website).

      The following steps should be completed to allow the device starting DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode and load the HEX file:

      1. Install Flip software (Flip Version 3.0 or above is required).
      2. Push the RST (Reset) button.
      3. Connect the board to the PC using the USB Cable (Standard Ato Mini B)
      4. Push the HWB (Hardware Bootloader) button.
      5. Release the RST button.
      6. Release the HWB button.
      7. If your hardware conditions explained above are correct,a new deice detection wizard will be displayed if you are using Flip
      for the first time. Please follow the instructions (the INF file is located in the USB subdirectory from Flip installation:
      "install path:\ATMEL\FLIP\FLIPx.x.x\usb")

      Now on your PC, the New Device Detection Wizard will open.

      Select "Install from a specific location (Advanced)" and click on Next>
      Select "Search for the best drivers in this locations." and click on "Include this location in the search:". Now Browse to the path C:\Program Files\ATMEL\FLIP 2.4.2\usb and click on Next>

      Now check your Device Manager. There must be a new icon with the description AT90USBxxx (where xxx is the number of your USB Controller). If it's not start the procedure again.
      Your Device is now in DFU Mode. Launch the programm Flip to proceed with the flashing process.

      Click the chip-icon in the upper left corner and select your device from the up-poping list.
      Now click on the USB-Cable icon in the upper left corner to select the communication mode. Select "USB". In the up-poping window click on "Open" to open the communication port.
      Now click on "File" "Load HEX File..." and browse to your ready psgroove.hex file.
      Now Load the HEX File (in the Operations Flow Tab Check Erase,Program and Vertify,then Push Run button) A window will pop-up that shows the processes.
      After the processes are done click on the "Start Application" button in the right down corner.

      The AT90USB bootloader will detach and jump into the user application when "Start Application" button is pressed.

      CONGRATS,YOUR HOMEMADE PS JAILBREAK (WITHOUT BACKUP MANAGER SUPPORT IS NOW READY TO RUN!)

      PS: I wrote this tutorial by myself with a lot of research on the Atmel user guides. Everyone who will use this tutorial on several pages please give credit to me as i wrote it by myself.
      I didn't test anything of what i wrote but by the isntruction manual from the manufacture it seems realy easy to me to flash the psgroove HEX file to the USB controller.

      Pic's will be added soon. I ordered a AT90USB KEY as well and I will release some review Vids and tutorials ASAP.

      I know that this Tutorial needs a lot of editing,if someone knows some more details I would apreciate to add them as well.

      Thanks grecomafioso for this tutorial! But, that is alot of steps to go thru, they have uploaded pre-programmed WITH BACK-UP MANAGER hex files for download now! Plus, using the Teensy board, it works with Windows XP/Vista/7, Linux AND Mac! ....I am a Mac user but I have a Windows XP PC available, i just prefer to use what I already use, plus my Mac is a laptop and I can program these at my brothers house when i inform him of this....but if they do release this for PSP and/or TI-84 (wow, those expensive calculators will be put to use other than playing Tetris) then that will be great as well...I am sure the PSP version will end up requiring you to use a Memory Stick exclusively for that, but that's okay, i have like 3 of them including the standard 32MB card that the PSP came with...I know the Hex file isn't that much considering it only uses 19% of the Teensy board according to the Teensy programmer app. Yea, i downloaded everything already, I just gotta get the board.....and a PS3....

      I know that this Tutorial needs a lot of editing,if someone knows some more details I would apreciate to add them as well.

      what operating systems will this work for? anyproblems with win7?

      By the way, does it matter if its Teensy 2.0 or Teensy++ 2.0...I would probably be better off buying the ++ model anyway for future updates, but for $6 less, the Teensy 2.0 would be better....of course, MUCH better than that $160 price anyway...I would love to see someone who has actually tested this, can't wait for videos showing this works! hopefully whoever figured this out will upload a video of it working

      Haha same here. The teensy USB board stuff looks a bit too confusing for me, and I already have a PSP. It shouldnt be long before something's released, though a time frame would be nice. :thefinger:

      @delaros3 I am a mac user as well, and even if its a Windows only program, I think it would be worth it to use either Parallels for Intel macs or VMWare for PPC Macs....it will be damn well worth it to install Windows on a Mac just for that one use...but you know ALOT of PSP apps are Windows based, i did get lucky and get one i really needed for Mac....but just cross your fingers and might as well get Parallels or VMWare ready...

      What will be the impact using it?

      Do we have to expect beeing locked out from PSN retrieving these errors or even do we need to expect our PS3 to be destroyed?

      What happens if I use the PS Groove only without i-net connection and then unplug it any time I need to do anything online? Would Sony be able to track such things?

      @SubZero15 it's been said that the PSJailbreak IS detectable, so I would say this is as well...it seems to be using the same software, just a home-brew version of it....the Disc ID that Backup-Manager gives isn't the actual disk ID of the game used, thus causing Sony to flag you and catch you....for the time being, until Backup Manager is updated for the Disc ID functionality, I would keep offline with any games used

      As of now you cant use the .hex file on a psp. Maybe, hopefully, in the near future a something.eboot will be written along with a custom .prx driver. In other words, psp homebrew enabling this. You still need your psp hacked/running custom firmware.

      A big thank you and much respect to people who have finally made this possible! I have been reading everyday following the updates since psjailbreak was first announced but havn't noticed anything said about 'otheros'. i have my 'online' ps3 that i have borrowed but i also still have my 60gb that has been sat gathering dust since the april 1st update. I know it will have to be updated to current fw for the jailbreak to work but in doing so i lose my 'otheros'. With the jailbreak enabling homebrew and such does mean installation of 'otheros' is an option available once again or will we have to wait for a cfw to be released? Sorry for asking but its been sat there since april looking all sorry for itself just waiting for the right time to make a comeback? is this the right time or should i still hold off Thanks guys and gals!

      I don't normally comment on things like this, I usually keep quiet and watch... but, Congratulations to all involved, Geohotz for kicking the initial exploits off, PSJailbreak for initially releasing the hardware exploit, and Mathieulh (& team) for continuing development. I to am very interested in the otherOS and custom firmwares, as soon as I have a working dongle I'd like to look into custom firmwares for otherOs.

      I've ordered a teensy ++ board and now waiting for delivery. One aspect which has caught my eye is the port to PSP, how exactly is this done? I presume it will be an application you install on the PSP, when will this be released? I would like to start playing asap.

      Yes,most likely. Its just a matter of time to see the first homebrews running on the PS3!

      The sheer irony of hacking your PS3 by using your hacked PSP. And still I'd really hate to see piracy on the PS3 but thats something up to the user. And yes even tho I dislike piracy I estimate the chance of me downloading a game still up there... The thing that makes me use it for Hb only is the fact of getting banned, really hate that to happen to me.

      Curious how Sony is reacting tho, the war has just began.

      A mobile version for the N900 is in development by kakaroto his blog

      I don't know about more mobile versions like for android devices but you can count on it that they will be developed soon.

      You seem like you know what your doing...go for it. The worst that'll happen is it wont work..but im not saying it wont cause it should. And have you tried opening up the ps3 and cleaning the lens with an ear swab(they say its not recommended but I usually use a little tiny bit of rub alcohol, just enough to get the swab damp, and it does the trick)

      This whole thing amazes me. The fact that the modding community has tried and failed for 4 years (i think), and all of a sudden, this usb hack comes out of nowhere and sparks this fire of porting it to different devices. I just hope that Sony doesn't update the firmware any time soon, causing this hack to stop working. I still have nightmares of the whole Geohot era.

      I just programmed the Teensy 2.0 code from the PS3HAX pack .zip file, and it worked -*perfectly*- !!! I was having trouble getting the code to compile properly, but once I had a .hex to work with, it was almost too easy.

      One piece of advice I will give is to remove all other USB devices. The first boot I had a controller plugged in, and it didn't work. I flipped the power switch, removed all other USB devices, put the teensy in the left-most USB slot, flipped the power switch, pressed the power button followed immediately by eject. When the light lit up, it was done.

      When the hack runs properly, you will see two new options on the "Game" menu. One of them lets you install a package. Plug a USB flash drive in with the manager.pkg file on it, select the install package menu item, select manager.pkg, and it only takes a couple seconds to install.

      The backup manager stays in the menu, even if you don't boot with the teensy. If you didn't boot with the teensy, it gives a "startup" error and won't run. If you do boot with the teensy, it runs perfectly.

      THANKS MUCHO!!!!

      No u cant use a regular usb it even says the thing u need on the front page. whats with these dumb question do a little research first
      Copied from front page
      "All you need is either a Teensy++ USB Development Board or AT90USBKEY"
      theres also a method in development to use a Ipod, psp, and a specific type of calculator. Just search Teensy on google and u will find www.pjrc.com/teensy
      and purchase it but dont expect to get it for a few weeks. god people are lazy

      In order to keep selling their product, PSJailbreak is saying that the final retail version:

      - is NTFS compatible (files over 4GB)
      - comes with Backup Manager 1.1 ("more complete" version)
      - will work with all past & present firmwares
      - will work with PS1/PS2 games

      I heard about the "new features" as well but im not sure they are for real.
      They are watching all this happen and trying to make the high price look worth it, these features are stated as "comming" so the current psjailbreak will be as it always was. Also if these features do get released for the psjb they will most likely be incorporated in the backup manager not the jailbreak itself, which we can run with our groovy versions .

      The one question i have is i have read the teensy once flashed with groove cant be seen by pc, if so how do we update it later on?

      I am also on 3.15 like you the problem with that is from what I have read is the the backup manger 1.0 only works with FW 3.41. But I just read this morning that backup manger 1.1 will work with all firmware whens it is released. Since I am waiting for my Teensy 2.0 ++ to be shipped to me me hopefully by then the BM 1.1 should be out.

      Thanks dentu you gave me great news, anyway i was about to post that it would only work with 3.41, but i thought this was a dongle issue not a backup manager issue.
      I thought the exploit didn't work on older firmwares, not the backup manager itself, can you give me the link on where you read that??

      question....I haven't seen this posted anywhere yet and I'm just curious if ISO images are able to be played via the BD Emulator, or are the backups only playable by dumping the individual files off of the disc? Second question, is it possible to put rip the game BD from a PC to an external drive and then use it? I understand the 4GB FS limit with FAT32, and I know NTFS support is in the works, but I know some people don't want to wear the laser out on their PS3. Many thanks.

      No its not possible to play ISO images. only by dumping the files.

      No its not possible to rip the game put it in external hdd, the game ripping process requires that the encryption layer can be decrypted or something similar which the backup manager does on the fly, but dumping using a pc won't.

      Following up on some late news, two different people are "tweeting" they are working on a version of the Open-Source PSGroove code that will run on devices that use the Android O.S.

      Please NOTE this is an Work-In-Progress project!

      That means it is NOT completed but it is being worked on hard by these two people.

      Here is what the first person has to say so far regarding their port'ing efforts:

      I'm very close to producing a fully working bug free app for this.

      They say we will release manager1.1pkg that will work on any version of the ps3, well it cant cause the device isn't recognized by any firmware version and only works on 3.41.

      And what device would you emulate this on? In case it's not obvious, emulation is already the idea that's bringing this to PSP/IDevices/Android. You can't just emulate it on the PS3 alone, as this exploit is done on PS3 USB before the software's even loaded. It's either one of these devices or a retail one. No other options would be possible.

      That might work, meaning if someone makes a port, anyway search for teensy++, teensy++ 2.0, teensy 1.0, at90usbkey, blackcatUSB,

      what you got to look for is the chipset i bought ateensy++ and blackcatUSB (with AT90USB162) look for these. don't buy **** randomly it won't work.

      You can't link two powered USB host devices together. This can damage your ps3/pc and isn't possible by the design of USB protocol.

      it seems to me, though im not trained, is that we can create software to emulate one of the usb chip controller and take over a usb port, then add the software to it and push that too the ps3.

      Now, I don't know the first thing about programming, so I won't be able to do it anytime soon. But I feel this would be something that can be done.

      no, the simple usb sticks do not have a controller to operate the mod/hack the psp has the ability to have the usb controlled. What i am talking about is emulating the controller so it can do the mod/hack

      Do we need to have the dongle plugged in whenever we want to run a backup? Or just for the install of package manager? Because I want to use the microcontroller for other things too. :P

      if you're worried about losing the OtherOs capability, if you search online there are places that you can download the OtherOs.self

      when you jailbreak your ps3 you should have the ability to re-install this file and have that capability back. however comma i would back up anything that you have on your linux partition of ur ps3 and be prepaired to re-install it. I myself have 3.15 fw.

      **Disclaimer**

      I have not yet jailbroken my ps3, but I do intend to follow the steps I mentioned above.

      Would it be possible to make an app for a PC to run and have a USB cable connected from the PC to the PS3? I think that would be a smarter way to go about it since 98% of every one I know has either a pc or a laptop. Only a small percentage have an iphone/android/psp/n90/usb devboard. not to mention a usb to usb cable is much cheaper then all of the above.

      Any plans to add in the ability to use the backup utility feature for PS2 and PSX games for those of us with fully backwards compatible models? How about DVDs and Blu-Rays? Could you also re-implement software PS2 emulation with this? Any plans to re-enable Other OS, or does it do this already?

      Can anyone point me to good sources of information on how I can compile C or C++ code to the proper format to run on the PS3? I am aware it uses a PPC processor, but how do you compile your application into a PKG archive to install on the PS3? I am a computer programming hobbyist that would like to contribute to the ongoing efforts if possible!

      No, it will stay on the hdd as long as you want but if you try to boot it with no psgroove/psjailbreak it won't work, it will only work with the jailbreak inside and a fresh boot, and then you can remove it again.

      Well I would have to agree, if you want to able to Jail Break you system, cause with the new Firmware going live it's only a matter of time before the retail store will these systems in stock and you will be forced to have the new update. so you can "RENT" .......cough cough.

      Plus I have been reading up on the PSgroove and somewhere I saw online that a $ony exec was saying that they will be shipping a version of the P$3 that will limit Harddrive access, if that is the case these systems are limited.....

      The state of the ps3 now is a waste indeed, my ps3 has linux and backwards compatibility by hardware, that is the real ps3, anyway we might get those features now, with the jailbreak.

      Hi all,
      I only skimmed all the posts, so I'm sorry if this has already been discussed.

      I have not jailbroken my PS3 yet because I was waiting to see how things went and what hardware could be used. This is just to answer a couple questions that I saw here.

      A friend of mine HAS gotten the psgroove to work with a TI-84, and since it has a dual purpose and used ones are about the same price, that'll probably be the method I choose - also I downloaded the TI-84 port just in case

      Additionally, for those that don't want to give up Linux, there is now a way to run Linuz on 3.41 w/o OtherOS (as of yesterday, to my knowledge). You will of course loose backwards compatibility with PS2 games, if you had it begin with, but I just saw a PS2 on ebay, with shipping for $29, and the mod for that is not very difficult (I'm a noob and managed to get it done).

      Finally, there are ways to avoid forced updates to play new games and log on to PSN (though I don't recommend it) - this includes Medal of Honor; it's rough, but I'm sure the process will get smoothed out and the hacks will get better.

      It has also come to my attention that you can use a dualshock 3 controller to get this done as well, though I don't personally know anyone that has tried it. But I found one on craigslist for $10 that a couple of the sticks do't work, but you don't really need that if you're just using it for psgroove.

      Hope that helps you guys out.
      Later.
      ************* [ - Post Merged - ] *************
      I do have a question though: In the past, with the correct hardware/software, you could downgrade the firmware to a certain extent to regain backwards compatibility if you upgraded on accident. I purchased the necessary equipment to try it out, but it's still sitting in t's original shipping box, unopened, lol. So has anyone tried to do this before? I've seen craigslist ads where folks are offering this as a service for like $60 (which is why I bought the equipment), so I assume it works. So can you purchase a new model with 3.5 on it and downgrade it, or is it like the 360 where physical fuses are burned so that you can't downgrade?
      Also, anyone know if you can delete the psgroove software and format and reflash the firmware so there are no traces left behind (for instance you decide you want to sell the PS3 to someone and not screw them over), or does that info get permanently burned onto a hardware chip somewhere?
      Thanks!
