• PS3 Hacks, PSGroove , 05.09.2010

People are eagerly waiting for ports to come in for the PSgroove so they don’t have to purchase a USB board. MuscleNerd, a respected iPhone hacker, and part of the iPhone Dev team has posted on his twitter that a iPhone port for PSgroove is in the works and is very close to being completed:

    To quote:

The nerdy video at http://is.gd/eW1RP means an Apple-mediated JB of PS3 (via psgroove) is close. (Sony please sue Apple!)

You can view the video below:

      Me neither...
All we can see is a graphical app on the iPhone that turns its background color and in the mean time sends a character string to the PC via USB.
The thing i dont get is why is there an MCU in this POC?
Moreover, i dont know much about USB except that it is serial and that serial is a character device in unix implementations.
I even wonder if a simple "cat /dev/usbdevxxxpc" on the PC while
"echo 'color!' > /dev/usbdevxxxphone" on the iphone wouldnt work out of the box...
      Any expert opinion appreciated.

What I think is going on (im being a pessimist tho) is the iphone is communicating via serial (which the iphone can do freely) and the MCU to the left is a serial->usb converter and all its doing is signaling the program on the PC to change colors. I'm doubtful this means anything to porting to the iProduct

C'mon people, MuscleNerd is very successful on things with the iPhone, i've seen many of his videos regarding jailbreaks of the iPad, and other stuff he's done, if anyone can do a iPhone port, it will be him! I'm sure if it works on iPhone it will work on iPod Touch, I don't see why it wouldn't, seriously doubt the hack will have anything to do with the cellular or gps parts of the phone. Wouldn't it be interesting to see a PSGroove port on a TomTom or other GPS system? Would be good for people with old or outdated maps or people that got a GPS enabled phone after a stand-alone GPS, but thats another story

The psp port will take a lot of time.

As for this one i certainly trust that muscle nerd can do it, it might take longer but he will get it, all of sudden people get impatient, when we have an open world for us, when nothing could be done during the first 4 years no one would say anything.

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm not exactly clued up on all this. But if I were to use an iphone port of PSGroove, would I still be able to use the phone features. Or can I not receive calls when I'm playing the PS3?

you will need to make sure that your device is jailbroken though.

ok guys here is my 2 cents i knw musclenerd is great with iphones and stuff and he is highly respected within the iphone hacking scene but the last time an iphone hacker came to the ps3 hacking scene he messed it up for all of us which was a shame i am just saying before i get sworn at because we dont want sony pulling any more stunts on us thats all i really enjoyed linux on my ps3 (damn u geohotz) i really do hope it gets done so people who dont know what to do with the usb boards can do it easily without using them.

when geo started on the ps3 everyone was behind him pushing him to carry on, none of us told him to stop did we?
he did what he set out to do and and it was only when sony retaliated that the scene blamed him. if he hadnt got as far as he did then i doubt that the jailbreak would have ever happened.

i agree with what you have said but dont you think geo did mess it up for us because he got the hack for ps3 but didnt give any information for it these hackers who have hacked the ps3 didnt get any info from him neither did the ps3 hax community all we heard from him was about the kernel and then a few weeks later he quit right?

the work geo did allowed to dump the memory and some other things which aided in gathering information on how the ps3 works, im not up to speed on the technical side of things. just things ive read along the way.

you are right though, it was directly his actions which led to the otheros being removed but it is unfair to solely blame him for it. at the time we wanted it and in a way its our fault too.

for people with virgin consoles who have no intention of hacking them, it is understandable for them to place the blame on him but as we in this community want things to progress we should share the risks and the rewards and shoulder some of the blame.

      @makots
i see no reason why it wouldnt as it would probably make use of openiboot (i think thats what its called) which allows the idevice to dual boot, like running android on itouch/iphone etc, so the hack would probably bypass the apple os entirely and do its thing unhindered.
but its early days yet, we will see.

Matheiuhl confirmed that without geohot's original hack, the jailbreak wouldn't have been possible. He said it was mainly memory dumps made with the hack that helped the most. Why do you think Sony panicked like they did?

To be safe, If you've installed the backupmanager I would not risk the console online at all. The app is still installed to the HDD (With the PSJailbreak or not plugged in). This is just personal preference though.

just note that uninstalling may not be enough to clear your tracks, Mathieulh believes that it is recorded in your logs. If Sony can access your logs, which seems like a reasonable thing for them to be able to do, then they can know you have used the backup manager regardless of whether you have it installed or not. This probably means they can know whether you have used anything (ie future homebrew) via the jailbreak from the logs. So if you are the cautious type, probably best to not go online with a jailbroken system that you have run backup manager/ community software on until we know more.

The two devices that most people have, iphone and psp havent been ported yet, and the most BS devices that no one has like n900, android and that calculator have almost been ported if not ported.
This is taking along time an also there are no places to buy them usbs from, which takes even more p%#@
Someone please PM if they can or know a place to get them usbs

No one has an android? hah you must be leaving 2 years ago that for sure, everyone has an adroid, but it doesn't metter who has what, what metter is what is easy to do, and an android port is easy, hence they have done a lot of ports. as for the iphone its not easy darwin is not open source, and the psp they are having some problems.

Anyway the iphone port is coming soon (iphone linux port meaning android on iphone) who has android on their iphone will be able to jailbreak.

First up Android doesn't work on the iPhone. Second the iPhone hack will come out and be workable once MuscleNerd finishes his work on it (and will be usable if your iPhone is jailbroken itself).

The reason why it's taking longer to do than the Android or N900, is because the 'features' he's using on the iPhone aren't really documented - he's starting a lot of it from scratch.

The video he released shows he can talk through the iPhone USB interface and send custom data which is half the struggle. Now the challenge will be for him to send the right custom data to open up the PS3 into dev mode.

yeah, thx dude. I finely found out

      To install it:

      First i made a Ubuntu 10.4 LiveUSB
From this gitted latest openiboot code
Figured out how to compile it (trick: install libusb from source AND from apt-get so that you have all include files required!!! And then patch loadibec.c else you get a "bad status" when you try to flash iphone ) => openiboot 0.1 installed

      upgraded my iOS to 4.0.2
JB my iPhone with RedSn0w 0.95-b5-5
From Cydia, installed BootLace 2.0.2 and the Darwin

Reboot => openiboot => Android => nothing happens!!
      WTF???!!!

Finaly, openiboot 0.1.1 needed for what bootlace installed.
Found it binary on the internet (can give the link if you want) => injected it with loadibec, installed it it openiboot console.

      Reboot => openiboot => Android => Fracking Success !!!

Conclusion: building openiboot is worthless, one can find it prebuilt.
It works pretty well, even if slow and lags a bit.
As long as it can JB the ps3, who give a f***?

the jailbreak for regular androids needs some files installed (like a recovery or something) to the phone's flash, so its impossible to do it that way on the idroid. just wait out, its coming really soon to idroid as you call it.

      Really?

If you had a PS3 v3.41 + iPhone 3G in hand, I'm sure you would appreciate and support MuscleNerd's (or anyone's) work on an iPhone port.

Truth is, there are a ton of people waiting on an iPhone port. More ports available in this scene are a good thing (for now.)

I would agree that MuscleNerd hasn't updated any status on PS3 JB recently, and there are other PS3 JB websites that have de-listed his iPhone port (to a not-active status.)

Don't really know if that is the full story, or if some progress will resume once iPhone OS 4.1 is taken care of. Obviously, iPhone OS 4.1 is a priority for iPhone Devs.

I wish I had more experience with iPhone dev myself, but I don't. I'd like to focus back on studying Cinavia watermark again, but I'm too eager for PS3 JB!

Absolutely, I agree that no one should be demanding anything (ports or custom features, etc.) None of us are entitled to this stuff.

I guess it's just discouraging to see a lot of different comments actually advocating that devs not work on a port because ...

      a) they already have access to another PS3 JB port
      b) think the XYZ platform is lame
      c) or to prevent the whiners from getting what they want

We should all be supporting and encouraging those various ports and/or custom utilites (if we want to see this scene grow right away.)

The iPhone has a huge market share, and this would be a popular and widely used PS3 JB port.

In the grand scheme of things, the more people who can access and use the PS3 JB the better.

Probably so! (I don't know if that was directed @me or not, but I'm not begging or crying for anything.)

I know I have seen more than enough 'status update' requests/comments/tweets to make me sick, and I'm not even receiving the requests (just seeing all of them is enough.)

Just saying it would be cool if the community wasn't actively discourage certain ports! Having an iPhone port would open this up to a lot of people, and that benefits everyone.

Just saying it would be cool if the community wasn't actively discourage certain ports! Having an iPhone port would open this up to a lot of people, and that benefits everyone.
Agreed (my post was not directed towards you) but when countless 1 or 2 post wonders cry and ***** about their **** not being ported, when all they need to do is wait for the chip makers to be back in stock, It makes you wish there was no ports to begin with. They act as if that is the only option. When it reality, they are just a bunch of cheap asses.

      Back to point.

I have also received a ton of requests from people to port this to the iPhone and/or one of their Symbian devices… my answer to that is : RTFM!! In other words, no it is simply *impossible*. It can only be ported to other Linux devices. However, we are close to having it work with IphoneLinux (actually, I just got confirmation a few seconds ago that it’s finally working) as NTAuthority spent countless hours porting it and fixing the controller’s incomplete driver in order to make this work. Once his port is finished, and stable, he will make it available to everyone, so stay tuned and follow the Device compatibility list on the wiki!
      Sounds promising, isn't it?

I can confirm its true i have had that confirmation from NTAuthority that the port is indeed working, i asked him about the release date, he didn't say anything, but for the looks of things it might come out tomorrow or the day after unless he comes across some problems that needs fixing.

I know this ia my first post here. But just wanted to say thanks to everyone on here. I just got my first ps3 a couple weeks ago. My last system was an xbox (not 360). Well besides the wii for the kid.
Anyway, I preordered a blackcat USB and was wondering if anyone would be interested in taking it off my hands if an iPhone/iPod port does come out. The blackcat is coming from embeddedcomputers.com (I think that's the site) and it wa preordered on 9/4 so it will be a while for it to come in. I don't want to cancel the order because I know the scarecity of the flashable USB boards. So I'm just test the waters to see if anyone is interested. Just in case.
      Thanks

      You won't brick your touch.
If it comes to the worst you can just put it into dfu and restore.
Older iPods prob won't work as hardware is different.

Those who decide to install iPhone Linux / Android on their devices, just be careful the way you turn it off from android. Dont use Home/Power pressing, you might damage your filesystem and have your phone unbootable.

When you say you need linux on your phone does it mean some sort of linux app or is it a proper OS which will replace the iphones original IOS

You need Linux -> you need the OS called Linux on your phone.
      To turn off:
      Run Terminal in "dev tools"
      Then type in:
      su -
      reboot

      Always keep in mind:

This could be cool, and would make the waiting for dev usb board sweeter!
You know, its not that bad if the news is incorrect... i was amongst the dumbasses who waited in front of their screen at 1am while working the day after and staring at the countdown for the fake ISO loader (i cant remember its name! you see, i wouldnt care )

      -SD card (emulated)
      -Backlight support
      -Rooted

      Hi Pockets69

What automated installer did you successfully use, on
      what version iPhone?

Reading their forums and docs, it looks like some of these installers are far from automated and full of issues (some appear to be discouraged and unsupported by the iPhoneLinux effort.)

Just curious to know what other found to work well.

A small testing release of PSFreedom for iPhoneLinux is OUT by NTAuthority!

Just saw this post by Mathieulh about the ipod/iphone port!

      http://twitter.com/Mathieulh

      http://psfreedom.com/wiki/IPhoneLinux

      Release Notes:

Just a small testing release of PSFreedom for iPhoneLinux.

A precompiled kernel/initrd is in the iPT1G folder, the USB kernel
patch is in the PSFreedom/iphone folder. It should be applied to
kernel_common from the iDroid-Project user on github as detailed on
      the idroidproject.org web site.

The android.img.gz is the initrd plus a testing boot script, the
.ko should go in /lib in it.

To build PSF, use 'make clean && make iphone' from the PSFreedom
      folder as usual.

At the time, Backup Manager isn't working (and no, it's not due to
the /dev_bdvd patch), but I'm working on fixing that.

Don't expect too many support, as this is just an 'early' preview.

Booting the initrd will work by using the 'Android' menu option in
OpeniBoot. Once the screen starts filling up with 'INIT' you can do
the starting as usual with 'jailbreak' devices. Note that the iPhone
should be the only device plugged in the PS3's USB ports.

      -- NTAuthority (2010-09-10)
I can't create a thread to let people know, maybe you can do the honors Pockets69 ?

Wait... so then who is making the iPhone port?

Also MuscleNerd said that any jailbroken device will be able to have PSGroove ported to it.

iPhone + iPod Touch runs the same OS. My iPod Touch 2G has an exploit in the bootrom, so basically I can do anything with it.
