More exciting news from the PS3 scene. Jaicrab has released a program for the PS3 known as “USB Firm Loader v0.2″. This app requires you to have a jailbroken PS3 w/ FTP server program and allows us to dump the contents inside /dev_flash (the “guts” of your PS3 firmware), install it on a USB stick, and then boot from that firmare!

Does this mean custom firmware for PS3? Yes indeed it does, and this is a very big step towards PS3 CFW =). All that would be required from this point is to make modifications to firmware as needed to let it do what we want.

    To quote (translated):

This program allows to simulate dev_flash from a USB. Allowing therefore a Custom Firmware.
We will be able to modify the files of our new dev_flash (USB) to our ill, without running the risk of throwing the PS3 to the sweepings. It is a beta version, surely you will find failures.
I will continue working in it when the time allows it to me.
To remember that the console does not undergo any risk. Everything what really changes of new dev_flash you will be doing it in the USB.

    Requirements:
    1. - Syscall PEEK and POKE.

    Installation:
    1. - To copy with the “Ftp server” all the content of /dev_flash to the USB (in the root).
    2. - To also copy the JaiC_USB_FIRM_LOADER.pkg in the root of the USB.
    3. - To install the package.

    Use:
    1. - To introduce the USB in the PS3.
    2. - To execute USB FIRM LOADER. After a second volvera to the XMB. The new one will sign this loaded.

You will see that any thing that you make the USB will start up. Ideal to modify RCO, to interchange units, which you imagine.

    IMPORTANT!
You do not update being in way Firmware Live. That would reinitiate the system having returned to put dev_flash original and it would update to you!
    NonUPDATE FROM USB FIRMWARE LOADER!

Maybe we can do something similar to DevHook on PSP... like, boot the latest FW via USB, allowing us PSN access & to play the latest games/use newest FW features while remaining on 3.41

only if we can dump the newer ps3 firmware, meaning a homebrew app for the ps3 that works silimar to the psar dumpers for psp. in due time, i predicted this would happen

      Translation by me:

This program let you emulate the dev_flash from a USB. Allowing a Custom Firmware to be loaded.
We can modify the files on our new dev_flash (USB) as we want, without the risk of bricking our PS3. This is a BETA version, it will have some bugs.

I will keep working on this on my free time. Remember that there is no risk to the console. Everything you change on the new dev_flash will really just be on the USB.

      Requirements:

      1.- Syscall Peek and POKE.

      Installation:

1.- Copy all the content of the /dev_flash to the USB stick root folder via "FTP Server"
2.- Also copy the file JaiC_USB_FIRM_LOADER.pkg to the root of the USB Stick.
      3.- Install the package

      Use:

1.- Insert the USB into the PS3.
2.- Execute the USB FIRM LOADER. After a few seconds you will be back to the XMB. The new Firmware is loaded.

You will see that whatever you modify on the USB will be launched. Ideal for modifying RCO, exchange modules, whatever you imagine.

      IMPORTANT!!
Do not update using the Live Firmware mode. Is will restart the system, back to the original dev_flash and update it.
No UPDATE FROM USB FIRMWARE LOADER!"
I'm nether American or Spanish, I'm Brazilian, sorry if there is any errors. You all should learn Portuguese :P

Wow, this is better than I thought... Basically a sandbox environment for us! I always thought cfw would come in the form of something you flashed to the PS3, not something that can be booted up like a VM lol! Glad I stayed on 3.15 (Though as time progresses and OtherOS gets returned, that will be less and less of a needed I'm sure)

His warning seems to refer to the first option (or mode) seen in the screenshot. The first mode is online update, the second one is update from disk.
Option 1 will reset dev_flash and do a full update, updating your system to 3.42.

      Edit:
Looking at the caption and the layout of the dialog in the screenshot it can also mean the following:
He patched the default update dialog of the XMB to support his fake dev_flash method when choosing option #2. Option #1 then still seems to do the original update, ignoring his dev_flash modification.

This is pretty cool, what I have been waiting for.
      questions however:

1)would this theoretically allow us to run 3.42 in a sandbox environment??, aka inside the usb stick, allowing us to go online without the jailbreak. I want to keep my 3.41 but you know when i want to go online maybe I can run my sandboxed 3.50 (soon to be)

2)ummm.. same as question one. Will it Allows US TO run 3.42 SAndBoxed??

I wonder how long before someone actually modifies PSGroove to act as the JB injector as well as the fw loader, bypassing the need to install the fw loader package into the XMB. Then at that point, you just download the new FW, once it's been deemed safe (No security patches or anything), place it on a USB, and just leave it in the machine.

The activity led on the usb drive doesnt blink or anything. Anyone else having similar issues? Any suggestions would be appreciated

EDIT: also, After I reset, I get a "please wait" message for about 20 or so seconds before it fully loads the xmb so I know its doing something... just not doing it right

hmm... it seems everyone is getting different results from this program... and none of them are good. Hopefully source could be released or the author could continue work into this.

EDIT: oh well, anyone who has this working should look into editing dev_flash/vsh/etc/version so that it reads 3.42 instead of 3.41. See if that changes your version in system information on the xmb and also if maybe.... just maybe that might be enough to trick the ps3 into not requesting an update when attempting to sign into psn

I was also wondering couldnt we keep our ps3s on 3.41 and use the 3.42 on usb? that way we could still play games as they are released with new fw and go online. Also if you run fw 1.50 on usb then update into 2.10 which would apparently trigger the update on dev_flash thus effectivly downgrading the firmware?

I know there is no real gain in downgrading atm but im just curious if it would be possible?

I can confirm it works here is what I did after it loaded my xmb again I went to system settings and saw I could open the list then I exited out of it removed my usb card reader and tried to open the list again and it froze so it proves it was reading it from my USB card reader. I recommended everyone that is having problem getting it to boot and getting stuck on the black screen to try a different usb stick or a usb card reader if you have one guess it does not like all types of usb sticks. Good Luck

Be fortunate if someone does make a cfw. If you dont know what a custom firmware does then why are you attempting to hack your ps3? Do you have a psp? Do you own any hacked device? If you did then you would understand the importance of a custom firmware to almost everyone here.

The key wouldnt be to flash it but to take a dbug unit dump and see if we could run it from usb.

wtf man? problems much? cfw is modified firmware... that means we can make the system do whatever we want. We can have custom themes (really custom like fonts and xmb waves etc) run homebrew without the jig (not at the moment) unlock more capabilities (online with psn and otheros) and alot more... calm down and dont get smart with anyone here

Aside from the obvious implications this has, I'm more excited at the possibility of reintroducing OtherOS. (Or, hell, at least having the abilities of OtherOS on GameOS.) It would be really great to bring back an operating system that has a much stronger dev community to help boost the entire dev community as a whole.

I'm still on 3.15 because of OtherOS, so if anyone figures out how to

      1.) use PSGroove on 3.15
      OR
2.) create 3.20+ with OtherOS access,

I'd be stoked beyond belief. It would simply be a matter of time, then, until you get an OtherOS-capable 3.42.

But blah. Now I'm just thinking out loud. Or in text. Carry on.

With the re-introduction of OTHEROS, we will see alot more dev's come out of the wood work, and give their piece to the community, im sure those dev's top priority is to make Linux run as fast as it possibly can.

Otheros/Gameos integration would be awesome. Like have a little XMB icon of Tux to click on when you want to boot into linux.

(seamless linux, like how VM are nowerdays, would the ps3 be able to support that?) Im not sure what the possibilities would be, but im sure it would be near endless :D

OK lets figure out what I did wrong, horribly wrong. I used PS3-FTP and FileZilla to DL my /dev_flash and put it on a FAT formatted 1gig USB Flash drive, boot PS3 Using TI-84+ (like I have a several times). Everything was good, loaded JaiCrabs Firm Loader package , and launched it. It went to a black screen for a minute or so and then boot into recovery and says I have to reinstall my firmware. I turn off the PS3 and it boots directly into the recovery menu, no PSGroove exploit, just hard reset. The Only thing I can think of is this

      1)Filezilla didnt download /dev_flash properly
      2) when I booted off USB it couldnt read some files properly
      3) set recovery menu flag for corrupt firmware

      make sense to you guys?

EDIT: If this happens to you download an update pup, change something to corrupt the data and use that file to update with. I did it and lost nothing (for once). But it repaired my firmware image for some reason, it must unset some kind of flag, or unlock something. Honestly not really sure WHY it works, it just does.

I heard once that a version of a ps3 board was used in some video editing station or audio station (can't remember) that ran linux, drivers for the RSX under linux exist for this system. since access to the RSX is now possible, who knows, one day we may even see hardware accelerated linux on the ps3.

Does anyone know what the name of that system was?

      @ kris:

What firmware doe your xmb show you have now at the moment? If it erased your firmware I think it has given you the chance to put any firmware on it if it's available to download somewhere.

I don't really know much about exploits but this sound accurate enough to me, I think.

At that time there was no XMB only recovery menu. I found the solution and edited my previous post to reflect the that. But the Recovery menu did ask for 3.41 or higher. This kind of thinking is good though, hell in this day and age ANY thinking is good(that made me sound OLD lol) If you want to get into exploits I would suggest a copy of "Hacking: The art of Exploitation" ISBN 978-1-59327-144-2 as a first read. This will give you a basic understanding of C, C++, assembly and making Shellcode. You will obviously have to expand upon that base, but its a good start.

Maybe someone could modify the firmware in usb in a way that system updates to usb flash, in that way we could update the usb firmware to 3.42 and 3.50 in the future

Imagine, someone edits the update config file (i don't know if there's a config file) with a hex editor, and somewhere in the file there was something like "/dev_flash", and replaces by "/dev_usb000", that way the system would update the usb firmware instead.

I'm waiting for a PIC8F4550 to jailbreak my ps3, so if someone could post a link to 3.41 dump, i will try to do something like this.

Honestly ANYTHING is possible in the future, we just have to wait and see. im trying to get this USB firmware thing working so I can test a theory. the idea is to change the version string in /dev_flash/etc/version.txt to be 3.42 so I can go online. we will see if it works

It could work, but some games need features only availabe in 3.42, so those games would not work properly

EDIT: One guy at another forum tried that but only psn store is working, no online gameplay.

tried changing version.txt, might have worked, i now have access to PSN Store but I dont have access playing games online for some reason

nice, there are ps1emu, ps2emu and pspemu folders aswell on the dev_flash. this could come handy.
but has anyone a dump of a debug/test console? would be gret if these could be loaded with this homebrew!
and if someone has the entire text of the 3.42 version.txt i could try to connect to psn (i guess just changing 3.4100 to 3.4200 wouldnt be enough)

There is a lot of versions in version.txt

maybe we can sniff some with help of tcpdump or so and 3.42.

or its possible to get this thing from debug 3.42 fw and debug console.

It wouldn't work because the ps2 emulation has to do with the hardware more so and not with the software as you have stated.

If they bring the support back for OtherOs and maybe release a cfw emulation would be possible, but this will not happen soon.

We all just have to wait and have faith in the ps3hax community.

I looked around and no one is talking about it so I figured Id post my experience with this hack.

      Loaded /dev_flash contents to USB
      did not work
Changed flash drives, all good now.

Now here is the part thats useful to me.Boot to USB XMB and in the root of your USB drive add folders app_home/PS3_GAME (so thats PS3_GAME inside app_home, case sensitive)
You can then place your EBOOT.BIN homebrew file in the PS3_GAME folder and this will take advantage of the menu item "/app_home/PS3_GAME". This is easier for people who are developing HB, so we dont have to make a package EVERY TIME we make changes. Just thought Id share.

FTP'd to PS3 this time with windows... odd there was an extra directory I never saw with FileZilla or the standard Ubuntu FTP program /host_root. Ill be experimenting with this. I have a feeling it may have something to do with the tools that are in the SDK for launching code remotely (which would rock). I know that those tools usually fail to connect, but is it because we dont have r/w access to these directories with the nand system? my investigation continues lol.

I wonder if that'll help C4pt (He's the one working on restoring OtherOS, if anyone didn't know), he was having issues last night in IRC with getting the JaiCrab loader to work. I directed him to your previous post about corrupting the firmware to force it to reload, but he had said he saw it and it didn't help him. Wonder if this one does...I know alot of times, as new news gets posted, sometimes people tend to stop following the discussion of previous ones. I'll let em know later today (If nobody else lets em know that is), got a BBQ today and I hate just dropping into IRC saying one thing and dropping back out, I like to stick around... IRC drive-bys are the worst lol

In order to get other OS back the easiest way is, mathieulh and richdevX to port psgroove to older firmwares, then someone with an older firmware, dump theyr dev_flash and we boot it with jaicrab tool, therefor having access to the otherOS feature, or have the ability to load a debug firmware, why has no one dumped the dev_flash of the ps3test? so we can use it with jaicraB firmware loader.

That's not how it works. Each flash is unique, and also contains PLAINTEXT usernames and passwords. You'd have to be stupid sharing your flash dump with someone.

The first thing I did was restore my system and install 3.41 just in case I had something good to share that had my info on it. Secondly. I was having trouble getting the JaiCrab thing working too until I realized that I needed to copy the CONTENTS of /dev_flash to a USB drive and not have a /dev_flash directory on the drive. BTW I loaded the FTPd while running XMB from USB and could access all the flashes from the PS3 and the USB(/dev_flashO), kinda cool.

crap i know that,i just didn't think about it. anyway that could be used if, it would be from a formatted hdd, and then dumped, that way there would be no usernames passwords and little information given away, am i right sniper?

is it possible that the ps3 uses a efuse type system similar to the xbox360 in which when the console undergoes a f/w update it blows a efuse inside the cpu disabling a firmware downgrade or any lower firmwares from operating due to the fact that the firmware checks the number of blown fuses in reference to the f/w version... i havent been on the 360 scene in a long time and am new to the ps3 scene but i just had that thought run across my mind and was curious
