A group by the name of TeamICE made a forum post, claiming to have a PSP Emulator for Jailbroken PS3′s, they posted images and links to the Emulator __eboot_bin on IRC reported that it didn’t work after he tried it but forum member japsander reports that it bricked his console.
This is the thread in question [Release] PSP Emulator
Also japsander has made a thread here did i get a ps3 virus?
This group are NOT the real TeamICE and are NOT affiliated with the real TeamICE either, if anyone has been affected by this please report here, thank you.
EDIT
Other PS3 Forums are reporting about this too, members on PSX Scene have unfortunately also been affected
EDIT 2
Well known and esteemed PS3 Developer Mathieulh has made a post regarding this subject, this is what he says:
The EBOOT.BIN is the manufacturing_updater_for_reset.self it has the same digest on the self. DO NOT RUN THIS, it’ll brick your console if you do, the problem is the psjb patches make it so any self with any auth id will just run because the function that checks it always returns true, that obviously includes jig selfs which are not meant to run in such a fashion)
You should be careful of what you run on your playstation 3, even with a homebrew there are ways to permanently brick your console beyond recovery, even ways sony themselves can’t fix.
EDIT 3
japsander the forums only victim of this awful trick, has posted how he fixed this problem, to help anyone else has been duped by this fake Emulator, this is what he said:
my 120gb original drive was locked somehow. the ps3 kept saying no access to disk or failing at random % of format
i formatted my spare 40gb in the pc and put it in my slim and tried many times to do a system upgrade from recovery menu using flash drives (6 to be exact) all failed saying that no update was found.
i got more luck using an external usb powered hard drive which got further before crapping out with an error (i cant remember the error code)
after trying with different drives in the external enclosure i eventually got my original 120 from the ps3 to hold the firmware in the enclosure and restore my slim to a 40gb fully working ps3.
i then formatted my 120gb in the pc, slapped it in the ps3 and used the 40gb as external, holding the firmware and restoring my console to its former glory.
it was really random. the errors got less and less the more i tried to fix it.
it probably would have worked quicker if i had taken the battery out of the ps3 and let it discharge but alcohol and electronics never mix well so i left my screwdrivers and hammer where they were.some guy at psx-scene managed to restore it straight away using the recovery menu but some other people got the whole random errors that i did.
im just happy it worked and ive learned my lesson not to try homebrew until verified.

A PS3HaX member, by the name of PlayOS Developer has released information, on a project he is working on, here is a quote from the original post:
Thanks to PS Jailbreak, I’ve been able to finally make a proper running version of the first custom PS-Dedicated operating system “PlayOS”

It takes up 730MB of your external hard drive as it runs off External Media (Backup Manager).
Easy to use.
Built-in dedicated web browser “PlayBrowse”.
Compatible with 3.41 only.
You need to have a development board! Will not work with mobile phones except the Nokia N900 (Will have to look into this).
Video coming soon.
Hardware acceleration (just like OS X) enabled. This means .mkv files in 1080p!
Support for file types:
.zip
.tar
.gz
.mp3
.avi
.mp4
.divx
.exe – ONLY PlayOS Coded ones! Windows applications will not work with this.I’ll tease you with some pics for now
![]()
This operating system will be a ps3hax.net exclusive

A very early, and somewhat laggy version of Sega Saturn Emulator for PS3 has been released. Granted its still version 0.1, the developers are working hard for better support, nevertheless its a start

suffle2 has managed to port PSGroove to Redbox (a open source firmware for MP3 players and iPods).
To quote:
This is a patch for rockbox which replaces usb functionality with that of psgroove.
Currently it is only functional on PP502x targets, and has only been tested on a
5th generation ipod video.Additionally, the descriptors/payload is the vanilla psgroove data at the moment.
I hope to eventually port Aaron’s changes to build descriptors at compile time…
or someone else can do this change and commit it![]()

A few days ago i reported about the HTC Desire Recovery Mod by Klutsh, well Amon_RA has released his own version for you HTC Dream owners, a quote from the source:
This is a custom recovery specifically for PS3 owners that want to run PSFreedom.
PSFreedom was written by KaKaRoTo to implement the original PS Jailbreak exploit, based in part on reverse engineering efforts by the PSGroove project. The only firmware that is currently compatible with PSFreedom is 3.41
Features :
Default Android features :
ALL features of my recovery for the Dream are supported (including ABD and Mass storage toggle).PSFreedom :
A new menu-item called “- Run PSFreedom” can be found in the main menu.
The menu-item will lead to a submenu allowing you to choose different payloads and even a test shellcode :* No Blu-Ray emulation (Hermes) : This is a modded PSGroove payload, which allows you to play backups without the need of a BluRay disc inside the PS3.
* Blu-Ray emulation : This is the standard payload with Blu-Ray emulation support, which allows you to play backups.
* Homebrew only : This is the standard payload without Blu-Ray emulation support. It does not allow you to play backups.
* Blu-Ray emulation + peek/poke : This is the same as “Standard payload with BD-Emu”, with additional peek and poke system calls. It is based on the PSGroove payload. It is only needed by developers.
* Homebrew only + peek/poke : This is the same as “Standard payload without BD-Emu”, with additional peek and poke system calls. It is based on the PSGroove payload. It is only needed by developers.
* Test only shellcode : This is a test only shellcode that will force your PS3 to LV1 Panic (beeps, shuts down and blinks the red LED). It is useful to debug whether the shellcode gets executed or not, independently of the content of the payload.Usage on PS3 :
1. First shut your PlayStation 3 down and then flip the power switch in the back to off (on Slim models, unplug the power cable). Disconnect all USB devices (controllers, USB hard drives, etc.) from the PlayStation 3.
2. Boot your phone into recovery mode, select “- Run PSFreedom” and choose a payload.
3. Now, plug your Dream into one of the USB ports and flip the PS3′s power switch back to the on position (or plug it back in). Do not turn the PS3 on with the power button yet.
4. For the next step, timing is important. You will need to push the power button and then almost immediately after press the eject button, as if drumming your fingers across the two buttons. When you are successful, the PS3 will take a bit longer to start up.
5. When XMB loads, under the “Game” menu there will be two new options, ★ /app_home/PS3_GAME and ★ Install Package Files. Congratulations, you’ve jailbroken your PS3. You’re ready to install homebrew applications.Installation on phone
This recovery can be installed on any Dream, independent from the rom. Please follow the installation instruction of my regular recovery.

PSGroove port for the Arduino Mega with ATMEGA1280 and Arduino Duemilanove with ATMEGA168 and ATMEGA328 ports have now been released!
Download here (schematics inside download): http://www.ps3hax.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=438
Before getting started, determine what type of Arduino you have and what the chip is (just examine the the surface of the large chip on your Arduino). Also make sure you have the Arduino IDE unzipped somewhere.
Troubleshooting
If the flashing fails you might need to adjust the COM used in psgroove_install.bat. To do this:
Another issue noted by users of the Duemilanove is that it might not flash due to chip mismatch. Find the chip model number on your arduino and change atmega168 to atmega328 or atmega328p accordingly.
Before getting started make sure you have avrdude installed. Check your distro for install instructions. For reference for ubuntu you can do:
sudo apt-get install avrdude
Download and install the Arduino IDE according to the Getting Started Page. Alternately you could install avrdude.
Thanks to ricardopvz for the news tip.

To quote:
What’s it?
It’s a simple Linux GUI for the Sony’s SDK make_package_npdrm tool.
With this tool you can extract free PS3′s packages (.PKG files) or make your own homebrew packages to install them in your Jailbroken PS3.
You can ask Red_Squirrel any questions, comments, or bug reporting at the release thread here.

One of the things that PSGroove and jailbreaking the PS3 has opened up, is the world of game modding. PS3 users have not yet had the freedom to do this, but with the PS3 security exploited, we do now
.
PS3Hax member anti087 has posted a tutorial on how to mod Grand Theft Auto IV for the PS3. I am sure there are endless possibilites to do, for many other games as well so feel free to post your tutorial on our forums.
You can view the GTAIV PS3 modding tutorial HERE.

Now this is a very interesting case, according to the reports at the Playstation 3 forums, it seems Sony has blocked “75% of 3rd Party USB” peripherals with their latest firmware update. Yep, that means anything not licensed by Sony can be disabled via USB, which unfortunately includes many 3rd party controllers (such as the PS3 MadCatZ controller).
A surprising and poor move by Sony. Even more of a reason to not update.
Information from Sony about Counterfeit controllers which was posted a few days ago:
“Counterfeit PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers, which are practically identical in appearance to genuine PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers, have been discovered in the market. SCEA advises consumers to be cautious when buying PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers from uncertain sources as the quality, reliability and safety of counterfeit products is uncertain, and in some cases, may be dangerous. It is possible that some counterfeit product may ignite or explode, resulting in injury or damage to the user, your PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, or other property. Moreover, SCEA does not support continued functionality of counterfeit or unlicensed controllers in system software updates and these devices may cease to function in the future because of system software updates.”
Let us know, if you have updated, of 3rd party USB devices you have found not working.

Looking for a cheap USB board to flash PSGroove onto? Then you might be interested in Golden AVR (confirmed to be PSGroove compatible).
To quote:
The GOLDEN AVR Training Board is a low-cost demonstration board based on the AT90USB162 16kb microcontroller. It allows the quick evaluation of AVR microcontrollers and the AT90USB family.
A great solution for anyone looking for an open source route in jailbreaking their PS3′s (and can’t find a compatible USB board anywhere).
You can grab a Golden AVR from the official site, HERE.
We will also be providing support for Golden AVR, and you can visit the subforum here.

A few days ago we reported you of GameSuper who managed to boot PSP ISO’s off the PS3. Today, he has posted another video to prove that he indeed is the real deal, and his method is not fake:
To quote from GamerSuper’s blog:
OK guys, I’ve been working on my tool all these days so there were no news.
Today I’ve made a second video of launching PSP game on the PS3. This time it’s in HD.
Some people didn’t believe me ’cause they didn’t see a file structure of the game. Also some guys notices that it was strange size of PSP game – there were some extra unneeded files which I forgot to detete. Didn’t think people will explore every frame.
So this video demonstrates Assassin’s Creed Bloodlines launching on the PS3. It’s one of the best titles on the PSP and that’s my one of the favorite game series.
I showed you every folder in root directory of the game so you can clearly see what’s on the HDD and what a game folder contains.
Also, as you may notices, I fixed a sound problem so there is in-game sound now. Loadings became much faster than on PSP itself. In my next videos I’ll be showing you my program “in action”, after I will finish my tool, some beta testers will be needed. After that I will release a tool which will be compatible with EVERY PSP game.
Also I’m working on PSP homebrew compatibility on the PS3. There are some difficulties, but I’ll manage to succeed I think. So I think soon I will be able to show you PSP homebrew launching on the PS3.
Stay tuned.
Thanks to dtm808 for the news tip.

An anonymous user over at Elotrolado has released a patched version of Backup Manager to support the PSgroove with Hermes changes. We are now able to play PS3 backup s without having a disk inside the PS3 drive. You will need the new version of PSGroove flashed to your USB board.
To install you just need to overwrite the existing one, so you do not have to delete the old/currently installed backup manager.
I have not tested this yet so I can’t give you a 100% it will work, but according to reports it seems to be working, reply back and let me know your results.
