• A PS3HaX member, by the name of PlayOS Developer has released information, on a project he is working on, here is a quote from the original post:

Thanks to PS Jailbreak, I’ve been able to finally make a proper running version of the first custom PS-Dedicated operating system “PlayOS”

    PlayOS is a Linux-Based system.
It takes up 730MB of your external hard drive as it runs off External Media (Backup Manager).
    Easy to use.
    Built-in dedicated web browser “PlayBrowse”.
    Compatible with 3.41 only.
You need to have a development board! Will not work with mobile phones except the Nokia N900 (Will have to look into this).
    Video coming soon.
Hardware acceleration (just like OS X) enabled. This means .mkv files in 1080p!
    Support for file types:
    .zip
    .tar
    .gz
    .mp3
    .avi
    .mp4
    .divx
.exe – ONLY PlayOS Coded ones! Windows applications will not work with this.

I’ll tease you with some pics for now :)

This operating system will be a ps3hax.net exclusive

nice job but i do not get what the big fuss over linux is for. i understood when everyone thought that was how the ps3 was going to be hacked and all of a sudden EVERYONE used the otheros. (yeah right) but now we do not need the otheros so why bother? why would you want your ps3 to be used as a computer and not a video game system? just does not make sense why everyone is begging for this feature. therefore, i would just like to hear from these people, that want linux on ps3 so bad, what is the purpose of wanting this? what can be accomplished using linux on ps3 that can not be done already? i am just curious. not trying to be a dick, i really want to know what people want/expect from linux on ps3.

If you have an open operating system, you don't need to use the illegal SDK to develop software. Plus there are mountains of programs and utilities that would take nothing more than a simple recompile. I know that there are a lot of people who don't see any point to this except for a backup manager, but running Linux makes all of the other possibilities easier.

Linux adds a huge amount of functionality that would be openly available with a stock install. This means no coding and porting with the ps3 sdk and waiting for weeks for something useful to be released. Linux offers emulators, word processors, full capability web browsers, and everything you would expect to come with a user oriented pc. I used other os and took advantage of being able to program on the cell processor... even with lack of hardware acceleration. But these are just some of the reasons people want OtherOS back.

This is awesome! But I suppose I should invest in a development board sometime soon, because if this project is any indication, that's where the action is. Unless someone would take it upon themselves to port/update these types of things for other jailbreak methods, but somehow I don't see that happening too quickly.

      What do you guys think?

If this is actually running through the GameOS then there is a high possibility of using all the SPU's to do things a normal PC would do, which means we could have an extremely powerful PC...lol

This is basically a homebrew OS app. This means you can access the in-game XMB while running this OS right? It should since it basically runs like any homebrew or game.

This looks like a nice mini-OS, but I don't see it being as useful as a full linux OS with what we had using the "OtherOS" feature.

      Quick question guys...

It states this under the description.....

Hardware acceleration (just like OS X) enabled. This means .mkv files in 1080p!
To my knowledge... I am unaware of OSX being able to run properly on PS3 with hardware acceleration. Can someone please explain what they are referring to?

Thank you so much for any information.

      Yea actually lmao.

Well last I heard it was possible for it to run however custom kernel and drivers would be needed. Even if that came to be, everyone stalled due to the Ps3 locking out Hardware Acceleration which would make the OS useless.

Therefore... that statement alone on their post truly seems like a crock.

However, like everyone else if I'm wrong you can plan on me eating my words.

Well, to add on to the rest, do remember that the reason why this JB was started was because Sony removed the OtherOS feature, it is to get OtherOS back.

Anyways, if it's real, looks like a closer step into getting back the OtherOS feature (hopefully with full rights etc) so we can develop drivers too

      13/37 = 1337 = leet = SCRIPT KIDDIE ALERT
Second it totals 50GB ... I was not aware of a 50GB Hard drive for the ps3

And then there is the opacity differing from the menu in the left is different then the opacity in the "About this PS3" window open. And where the hell did the mouse cursor go.... " IT JUST VANISHED or did the photoshop editor forget to put it back in. Also THERE IS NO MINIMIZE button why would you code a gui and not put a minimize there stupid imho.

When u install another os onto the ps3, u have the option to set whatever amount of the ps3 hdd u want dedicated to the os and for the ps3's system too. In theory, he dedicated 50gigs to that operating system.

Nope, you can have 10Gig for otherOS the rest for XMB,

You dont add the 13 and the 37. its saying it has 13gb out of 37gb. as hard drives are advertised base 10 a 40gb hdd drive would show up on a computer as smaller. If you had a 40GB (advertised) hard drive, then did the correct math it would be approx 38.14GB actually. Then account for the filesystem. Depending on how much space it actually uses may bring that total number down to 37'ish GB.

In general executables for Linux are named .ELF( Executable and Linkable File, )
but hardly ever mentioned in the executables name itself.

MacOS X Tiger should run fine on a PS3 in OtherOS using mol( Mac-On-Linux )

Why make a cusomt "OS?" What is needed is a bootloader; did I hear PS3GRUB?

So he is the one who said it will be a ps3hax.net exclusive, not the Mods / Admins etc here.

To be honest it looks like a mockup, and a slightly cheesy one at that. Surely if you were making a Linux based OS you'd just use a Linux desktop manager like KDE or GNOME

any news on this ps3hax os?? ... lol ,kingxtc nice to have you back.
or is it another non starter.. i'd really like it to be real..

to me it sounds a bit like a live DVD distro , using backup manager and running from usb. ps2 Linux is using something like by running as DVD so the ps2 will read and run it.

No it really wouldn't. PSUbuntu, Yellow Dog, Fedora and any other distro's that work on PS3 are PPC based, not x64 based. Yes, they are both 64bit but that's where the similarities end. While I'm on your case, there is no "D" in Gran Turismo either!
