suffle2 has managed to port PSGroove to Redbox (a open source firmware for MP3 players and iPods).
To quote:
This is a patch for rockbox which replaces usb functionality with that of psgroove.
Currently it is only functional on PP502x targets, and has only been tested on a
5th generation ipod video.Additionally, the descriptors/payload is the vanilla psgroove data at the moment.
I hope to eventually port Aaron’s changes to build descriptors at compile time…
or someone else can do this change and commit it![]()

I've been refreshing this site a couple times a day since the release of the PSJailbreak but now the time has come to register!
I own an old iRiver H300 mp3-player which I beleive is PP502x compatible. I've already installed Rockbox on it a couple of years ago.
Now my question to the community is: What settings should I change in order to get it working with the psgroove port and how can I do that?

THX
09-24-2010
12:59 PM
The reason you're all getting checksum errors is because the build being distributed by ps3hax is messed up. Get it directly from his github. The file in question (rockbox.ipod) should be ~640 KB.
09-24-2010
01:01 PM
To install an homebrew you have just to jailbreak your PS3 with iPod and in a USB Key have a .pkg to the root of it. In the xbm you can install it on "Games" icon.

The first code of psgroove was emputed of this function.
@Mixyde

Code:
PSGroove @ (hd0,1)/PSGroove/rockbox.ipod

Great news! I have an old (first gen) iPod Nano 2gb unused!
For now I have installed only Rockbox 3.6 (not the PS3hack) and I can say that it is a little bit unstable, it's crashed and now I have to wait necessarily the discharge of the battery because the reset don't work but it is a nice way to go the backup manager.
I have installed already the 3.50 firmware so I have to wait the 3.50hack but this is a very very great news!!

I opened the .patch in wordpad earlier this morning after finding 0x78, 0x78, 0x78, 0x78 on line 1,1something i can't remember the exact line and i changed it to enable backup support and i put that .patch instead of the untouched one into my .rockbox folder and i power off my ps3, plug in the ipod, and then power and eject and no dice. It loads for a couple seconds and then just boots up normally saying an unknown device is connected.
Sidenote: I know my iPod 5g is working properly because when i have the untouched .patch it works but not with my edited version.

what i love most in underground boards are people b****** about people talking about backups ^^
so what are you here for? go outside and play with some flowers! 99% of the people are interested in backups and NOT on the oh so great possibility to jailbreak their PS3 without anything to do with it when its done!
and again i was not b*******, but i think its important to absolutely clearly point out, the backupmanager isn't working with this release, so that 99% of the people DON'T have to bother!
and i was thinking what a great hero (because thats the programmer for me!) was thinking in using this! i'm just interested!
09-24-2010
05:18 PM
Nobody has a problem about backups.
How is downloading the same as backing up?
Buy it, rip it, keep it for personal.
And just be grateful that devs are working on these things at all
Some of us on here don't want piracy discussed AT ALL.
Doing so compromises this forum.

05:48 PM
not really, i'm really sry
so to speak, neither you or me, will learn how to port this is a short time =P
you know, there are different sorts of the psgroove out there. some don't support the backupmanager at all an some, like this support it but don't allow backed up games to play.
so what we need is someone to port the "fullversion" of psgroove, the one with full support, to the ipod, like it has been done to the htc desire, the TI 84+, and all the little usb dongles.
and i'm afraid it's not that easy
but i hope somebody else will do it ^^

Also, there's a quicker way to get your iPod back to disk mode when you've replaced the rockbox.ipod file.
If you just hold down CENTRE+MENU it'll reboot your ipod. While it's rebooting -- immediately after the screen goes blank -- flick the HOLD on. It'll boot into Apple's official 'iPod' interface mode, overriding the rockbox thing. If you then plug in a USB cord it'll run as normal. It's a lot quicker than removing and replacing a file every time you want to arse about with something!
[EDIT] of course, it goes without saying that you can get back to rockbox mode in much the same way -- hold CENTRE+MENU until it reboots. This time the hold will be on OFF anyway, though, so you won't need to touch that.

But when i go to the game it doesn’t have anything in there that different. My firmware on the PS3 is 3.41. Thanks.

Alright, maybe it's best someone gets it down in plain English.

1. Flick your PS3 off at the switch at the back.
2. Wait a second. Perhaps do a little jig or think about a post-box you admire.
3. Turn it back on at the switch.
4. Plug your iPod in.
5. Turn your iPod on. Make sure HOLD is OFF. If it was on already, you'll need to reset it by holding down the middle button and MENU until it visibly resets. Don't ask me why you need to do this, you just seem to.
6. "Power-Cycle" your PS3 by pushing the POWER button, then the EJECT button very quickly afterwards. It should go BEEP-BEEPBEEPBEEP. You'll know it has worked because your PS3 will take visibly longer to boot this way.
Guaranteed you have downloaded the right rockbox.ipod file and placed it in the ".rockbox" folder of your iPod or compatible device, everything should run smoothly.
Xell tells us the modified Rockbox.ipod files EXT4 posted earlier add support for backup manager. I don't know, personally, because I haven't tried it yet. I don't know what was stopping people from running it before, but apparently it's a non-issue now. Perhaps it's a wiser choice for green-horns like me to wait a bit and see if those are verified as working.
In the meantime, Snes9x anyone?

Topper: If that is your code, your player is compatible.
This means the problem must lie somewhere else.
1. Technique. Are you following the technique as I and a few others have demonstrated? It's important to follow every little bit, even the things you think don't make sense.
2. Files. Are you using the right .ipod file? If you look at Ext4's post on page 13 you'll see the two files you should put in the ".rockbox" folder.
3. Hardware. Check your hardware is compatible.
If it isn't 3, it's probably 1 or 2.

09:01 PM
As stated before, if you're running rockbox, you can find out whether your device is PP502x by going to System-Debug-HW info. How many times?
Regarding Backup Manager and EXT4's post, I tried it backing up my Mirror's Edge disc (4.2GB so it wouldn't take too long) and it ran perfectly when I placed the LittleBigPlanet disc in the drive instead. I thought I was using BM2.0 where you didn't need a disc in the drive at all, but maybe there's something I'm missing.
So there you have it. If you're me, everything works in regards to a legal standpoint.
Pirates, who knows.

That's no use to either of us either. What you're looking for is PP version.
Maybe if you updated to the latest version things would be a little more straightforward. At the moment it seems like we're using completely different devices with completely different software on them.
If the patch isn't working regardless and you're using my bootup guide from page 13, it looks like you have your answer already.

Since everybody would rather point out the shortcomings in others, than to lay down usefull information. Here is what I have tried for all the other people trying to get this going on an IPOD NANO 2G:
- Installed the latest build from rockbox using the Rockbox Utility
- Everything Installed fine other than it being called an (Unstable) version.
- 1st attempt: replaced the rockbox.ipod file with a bundle that only included 1 file
CHECKSUM ERROR
- 2nd attempt: replaced the rockbox.ipod file with the additional file of rb_psgroove.patch in the .rockbox directory. Once again CHECKSUM ERROR
The build of rockbox for the NANO 2G appears to be different since it does not display the PP Version in the View HW Info page. We might be running into a brick wall since we're not even 100% sure that it is even a PP chip to begin with. Hopefully we can get some answers by browsing around and gethering our info here.
Thanks guys!
Note that the 1G NANO rockbox.ipod file is about 600K in size, as the other one that comes with rb_psgroove.patch is about 655KB.

If you are trying to use the external for backup purposes, Xell is right. You would need to place all the games insice a GAMEZ folder on the external. If you are using the backup manager to do this, you can do the following:
1. Run the psgroove exploit
2. place manager.pkg on the root of a thumb drive (manager.pkg being the backup manager)
3. go to your thumb drive and install manager.pkg ( This will install Backup Manager on your PS3)
4. Run backup manager off the PS3 and make backups from there either to the internal HDD or external.

ok ext4
but can you compile the psgroove modify by Hermes to enable "no BD mod" and include on rockbox.ipod?
if you make this, BM 2.0 should work...

I have an Ipod Nano 1g. I have gone so far as to make /app_home/ps3_game/ AND Install Package Files appear in the Games section of the XMB but I have a problem.
When i click on /app_home/ps3_game/ I get an error saying "An error occurred during the start operation (80028f14)
When I click on Install Package Files there is nothing but if i press Triangle and click Install All Packages it says "No installable packages were found.

Alright guys, so many repeated questions its crazy. Let me give you a simple rundown:
If your iPod does not have Rockbox installed, start here:
1. Go to http://www.rockbox.org/download/ and download the automatic installer.
2. Once it is downloaded, open up RockboxUtility. Now plug in your iPod to your computer. Your device should pop up where it says "Selected Device"
NOTE: For it to work your device must be in Disk Mode. An easy way to tell is by going to my computer, and see if your iPod is detected there. Also open up iTunes Select your Device, under Options there should be a check for "Enable disk use"
3. Onece, plugged in and detected. In the Rockbox Utility, go to the second tab for Installation. First Press "Install the bootloader"
4. When that completes, hit "Install Rockbox" It should be automatically set to "Current build" which is fine, hit the Install button once again.
5. Once this is finished you have Rockbox installed on your iPod. Reboot your ipod by holding down MENU and SELECT (middle of the clickwheel)
Boom your booted into Rockbox, Your Almost there!
If you already have Rockbox Installed, read from here:
1. Now you will need to download the "rockbox.ipod" file to be replaced in the ".rockbox" folder
NOTE: You cannot just remove the .2 from the rb.psgroove.patch.2. This file needs to be COMPILED with the original rockbox.ipod for NANO 1G or Video 5g. Dont assume all the work has been done for you.
2. Once you have the correct rockbox.ipod file, copy it to the ".rockbox" folder, overwriting the original rockbox.ipod.
You are done, you now have the PSGROOVE exploit on your iPod.
The actual Jailbreak:
1. Power down your PS3
2. Reset your iPod so that ir runs the new rockbox.ipod script
3. Power up your PS3
4. Press the power button followed IMMEDIATELY by the eject button.
5. See if you have the 2 new folders on your "Game" tab of your PS3.
.pkg files can now be placed on the root of another thumb drive and opened from Install Package Files. Dont worry if you have no access to /app_home/PS3_GAME/
That's all i could do guys. let me know if I covered all the bases.

place manager.pkg right at the root of your other thumb drive, no folders, no nothing, make sure the file is named manager.pkg. Dont place the manager.rar and expect it to work. first extract it. Then place manager.pkg right on the root of the thumb drive.
I think I repeated myself twice there, but who cares.

Would it be possible to port this to the Sansa Clip+? I realize Rockbox disabled USB on it (And that it doesn't have a PP502x) , but wouldn't it be possible to enabled it using the Rockbox.sansa file or something?

Is there any plan to compile for iPod Nano 2g?
09-25-2010
01:41 PM
atm no ,
09-25-2010
01:41 PM
Didn't work.
I put the file onto the ipod (in the rockbox folder).
When I connected it to the PS3 (still turned on) it said "unknown media found" which was a something since nothing happened the last time.
I turned it off (not on the back though)
Pressed the on and then the eject button straight after it, tried it around 5 times using different combinations and nothing happened when I turned it on
09-25-2010
01:48 PM
Before you plug in the USB, you must turn the PS3 completly OFF (even the power, switch for FAT and cable for SLIM). You can then put the USB in and then plug the power cable back in or put the switch ON. Finally, you just have to tap the POWER button and then the EJECT button quickly.
09-25-2010
01:50 PM
- Switch playstation off completely (rear power switch, no lights on)
- Turn iPod Rockbox off (Menu + Play together for a few seconds)
- Turn PS3 power on using rear power switch (Red Light on)
- Turn on iPod Rockbox (Press menu and then wait for Rockbox start menu)
- Boot PS3 into Debug mode (Press Power button on front and eject button just after)
- Wait for PS3 to boot and you'll notice two extra menu options at the bottom of the Game menu (one should be "Install Packages")
- Copy backup manager to a USB drive and connect it to the PS3
- Select Install packages from the Game menu and install Backup Manager
You're home free from there

Rockbox doesn't support ipod nano 2g or the ipod classic 6g. You need a device in their supported list for it to be a chance of being ported (for rockbox at least)
Apple: iPod 1g through 5.5g, iPod Mini and iPod Nano 1g
Archos: Jukebox 5000, 6000, Studio, Recorder, FM Recorder, Recorder V2 and Ondio
Cowon: iAudio X5, X5V, X5L, M5, M5L, M3 and M3L
iriver: iHP100 series, H100 series, H300 series and H10 series
Olympus: M:Robe 100
Packard Bell: Vibe 500
SanDisk: Sansa c200 series (not v2), e200 series (all models), Fuze v1 (not v2), and Clip v1 (not v2)
Toshiba: Gigabeat X and F series

you do not have to do anything with the .patch file you oly have to put it in the PSGroove folder.

What does this mean? NOTE: You cannot just remove the .2 from the rb.psgroove.patch.2. This file needs to be COMPILED with the original rockbox.ipod for NANO 1G or Video 5g. Dont assume all the work has been done for you.

any news for noBD suport?
09-26-2010

I have been following this since the start, and thought I should share my very small discovery with this exploit. I am using an Ipod 5g (not 5.5) with Rockbox and latest (I think anyways) RB.ipod that from psgroove site (I'll attach my exact file). It seems that once the exploit has been started (the usual way) I can unplug my Ipod and everything still works as it should. I have so far tested, Blackbox FTP1.1 (and uploaded to ps3 HD), Backup manager 1.0 and played a game, as well as watched a movie through my network with not a single problem and not reboots of exploit etc...
If others find the same results please add to the first post tutorial for easy finding!
This I am not sure if other exploits can do but the Rockbox with ipod gen5 for sure can... test this and spread the news for others to include in their tests..
Sbp
Edit: sorry couldn't seem to attach my exact copy, but it is the latest posted on the thread from psgroove.com Good luck all!!! happy hackin'

Yeh SBP, noticed the same before.. It comes down to it not sending a "panic call" which clones do to make you buy one for each console I reckon.
I also noticed that I can eject the disk when using BM1, I could browse menus but didn't seem to load the level (got tired of waiting).
Can't wait for Nano 1G's to get the Herme's payload, waiting for ports make me wanna get an AVR, so I'll be patient until they're for nothing (obviously it takes time to port, not putting down those fine dev's, DanyL especially!).
Using my bro's PS3 atm, 40gb HDD's full, gonna get 500gb's for each of ours! :aetsch: haha

This is a patch for rockbox which replaces usb functionality with that of psgroove.
1. Power down your PS3
2. Reset your iPod so that ir runs the new rockbox.ipod script
3. Power up your PS3
4. Press the power button followed IMMEDIATELY by the eject button.
5. See if you have the 2 new folders on your "Game" tab of your PS3.
6. you need to install BM2 http://www.ps3hax.net/downloads.php?...d=432&act=down
7. run BM2
8. load a game you want
9. and run the game from XMB/APP_HOME/PS3_GAME/
-----------------------------------------------------------------
some ipod shortcuts.
holding play/pause shuts down the ipod
holding menu + select hard-resets ipod
holding select + play/pause immediately after doing the above, enters disk mode (for emergency recovery/getting stuff on/off the ipod)

Perhaps one of the best port.. I have an iPod Nano 1G and all works ok!

Can I give you some advices so as not to repeat too many times?
- Besides indicating the compatible models
- Add the lastest modded "rockbox.ipod" links for all models in the first post.
- Indicating that the ONLY file to move and overwrite is "rockbox.ipod"!
- In a side you can also indicate the PS3 firmware compatibility
I hope that this port will continue to be developed!
You're the best!

To Ps3Hax,Why you do not put the links on the page of description like that everybody takes advantage of it instead of putting 50 times the same request, and like that it is more clear, the files than ext4 made work perfectly: tested and approved for an ipod 5g and an ipod 4g.:aetsch:

New here and I apologize if this has been asked and solved before but, I've managed to jailbreak my ps3 with my 5.5g (I think it's 5.5 - I'm not sure how to tell) iPod. I see the app_home/PS3_game/ folder as well as the Install Package Files folder under the game tab. I'm using one of the rockbox.ipod files that was posted here around pg. 26 or 27 as the original poster said it had BM support. However, after downloading the BM v.1 from this site and putting it on the root of my USB stick and then plugging it into my ps3, it doesn't show the file. And yes, the file I put on my USB is the manager.pkg one. I wonder if it's my USB stick? I'm using a sandisk cruzer 8 gb one to move the file over. Any help would be appreciated. Also, thanks to everyone for porting this over to the iPod.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that it's in NTFS format as opposed to FAT32.
Second EDIT: I'm incredibly dumb. The reason why it didn't work is because my USB stick wasn't formatted as a FAT32. I probably should've known since my ps3 wasn't even detecting it. Silly me. I managed to install it just fine. Time to test it out. :D

Anyway, now when I try to boot up the PS3 again, I cannot jailbreak it anymore!
It seems like I've tried everything, re rockboxed my ipod, with ps groove, followed the technique, switch off, wait, switch on, plug in ipod, boot power and eject, NOTHING!!
Anyone have any ideas?

I got it to work with my 5th gen ipod video, ONCE.
To test it, I put the gamez folder on my ipod (had to switch to data mode for it to recognize it as a drive) installed the base data for wipeout with the latest Open Manager, tried to execute the game, it simply exits to the XMB.
Restarted the PS3, had it in the regular rockbox mode (as I did originally), the two folders didn't appear and I got the "unknown usb device" error.
Also, on my PC my ipod appears as a generic usb hub.
Reformatted the ipod, reinstalled itunes to restore it, used rockbox utility to load it up again and replaced the rockbox.ipod file, again.
Started my PS3 to find the same results, no two folders, stupid unknown error.
Unless I just got the power on + eject speed perfect the first time, something isn't working right.
Edit:It' was just timing.
Any suggestion to what might be wrong or if it's just my timing?

FFFFFFFF, now that I got it to work my PS3's HDMI audio died, the only thing I can think of that might have caused that was manually resetting the system so many times while trying to get the game to work.
So now I have the game but it's in total silence over HDMI, unless I use the playstation av cables.

It doesn't work with my Ipod for some reason?! Should rockbox boot properly after copying the rockbox.ipod and patching the Ipod? So what am i supposed to do next, i connected my Ipod to the PS3, then I switched off the power of the PS3, then i turned it back on, pushed the eject button immediately, but then there are no new folders! What do i do wrong?

So why doesn't it jailbreak, though i followed the tutorial exactly?
Again: i turn off my PS3 completely, connect my Ipod, turn both on (ipod first), then press the eject switch immediately!
Update:
The Ipod version should work fine (looked it up in rockbox).
When I try to Jailbreak, the normal way, nothing happens, the PS3 stays in Dev-mode, and when i reboot there are no new folders etc.
I also patched rockbox with the "IPL" i found and also copied all files from the links of the first post in the .rockbox folder. Do I need to do that, or else, how do I use the "Multi-Device.patch"? Also has the Ipod to be in Disc-Mode? It'd be really nice if someone could help me, I'm quite desperated right now,

I already put a patched rockbox.ipod file into the folder, and ipl is only a ipodpatcher, in wich the ipod drive gets selected.

Hey Guys,
If i replace the rockbox.ipod file then i am not able to connect anymore the iPod with the PC ot MAC. Any ideas how to fix this?
10-29-2010
12:39 PM
Actually i have found the answer of my previous question:
Rockbox has a dual-boot feature. To boot into the original firmwear, shut down the device as holding Menu and central button. Turn on the Hold switch immediately after turning the player on. The Apple logo will display for a few seconds as Rockbox loads the original firmwear.
So if you have problems using your iPod Video 5gen after applying the PSGroovie port on it, you can aways use the dual boot feature.
