inf1 from PSX-Scene has posted a tutorial on how to play PS3 game dumps containing 4gb+ files via external HDD. Many PS3 games use a type of compression known as .PSARC, an archived format for PS3, similar to WinRAR or WinZIP. The logical thing to do is simply extract them, and copy them over in smaller size :)

There games that do not have PSARC compression so this method would obviously not work. Reply back with games you have, and found that have these file formats and we will try to keep a list here of all the games this works with.

    1) Download PSARC Extractor
    2) Extract zlib.net.dll and PSARC.exe to any folder.
    3) Find any files more than 4Gb for example PS3_GAMEUSRDIRbuildmainpak22.psarc (5 596 444 529 byte)
    4) Copy pak22.psarc into zlib.net.dll and PSARC.exe directory.
    5) Extract pak22.psarc (just drag-n-drop pak22.psarc to PSARC.exe)
    6) Now copy pak22 folder with extracted files to gamefolder PS3_GAMEUSRDIRbuildmain
    7) Now you can delete pak22.psarc.
8.) copy PS3_GAME folder with game to your external fat32 usb hdd GAMEZUncharted2
    9) use backup manager to load game, should work fine.

Thanks to lewenberg for news tip.

      haha something so simple
      .psarc
      playstation archive

hopefully this works for anyone it effects
cant test since i dont have a +4 game

although hopefully the ps3 works that way by looking for the folder rather than the .psarc file

im thinking its only for the .psarc files which are 4+

unless the .bin is in the .psarc, then there still needs to be another work around

Do the games still require HDD installation when the psarc files are extracted to the external hdd?

so i assume you make a iso of the game the use (PS3 ISO2JB 0.5) on pc, then use this (PSARC.exe) to split those files, i havent backed up a game via pc bluray drive yet, but i shall try with metal gear.

now if its as easy ass splitting the .psarc into multiple files then what if we split the .bin into multiple files??? there has to be a way to check what the specific compression used is cause if im not mistaken isnt there only like 6 different compression choices with .bin files????

The PS3 operating system is just incapable of reading ntfs. Maybe if they get PlayOS (which is starting to look like a hoax) working on the PS3 we might be able to read our NTFS external hard drives. But I don't think we will ever see the PS3 natively reading NTFS without some sort of hardware modification.

@Klaxxon who told you that you need a HW modification to get NTFS working? You only need to write the proper drivers for lv2 and lv1 to get it to work. $ony could've done it easily but they don't want to license it from M$.

i believe this is like pc game splitting where we have to split DL discs to SL ones have have to edit the installer to look for the files else where. there should be a ps3 files that tells the console where to look for the install files. if we can find that we should be able to create separate .psarc files for the same game right?

for me it extracts killzone 2 data_ps3.psarc as 4 folders.

      data_ps3
      data_ps3intarface
and two more ( dont remember exact names)

tried putting these 4 folders into USRDIR, as well as renaming three of them (removing data_ps3 prefix) and moving them into data_ps3 folder

both ways result in black screen and ps3 freeze.

      Really???
When a game have a file large than 4 gigas i pass all the full game to my internal drive!! Exemple: Red Dead Redemption as a file with 6,84 GB (7.348.420.608 bytes), name : rdr2_layer0.rpf.
Are you saying that i can just transfer the files bigger than 4 gigas and put the rest in the external??
Make the path to the file in this case , PS3_GAME\USRDIR , put that file in the internal and all the rest of the gamer in the external?

No. YOu can transfer the less than 4gig files directly using usb. But you have to ftp files over 4gig. Much faster this way than ftp;ing the whole game.

It’s PFS, but newer than in the PS2, I tried to connect an exteranl 1.5TB drive in PS3 HDXT adapter and formatted it alright, but connecting it through the USB interface after was no success, no extra volume, no extra space.

Hi huys I have just got the ps3key and updated to the latest firmware v2 from its respective site and still kept the 1st backup manager, know I tried pro evo 11, modnation racers and infamous. The strange thing is that somehow I got to play these files (all over 4gb!) and played well on my simpletech 1TB external hdd (http://www.simpletech.com/products/storage/simpledrive) the hdd is partioned in 2, drive 1 is in NTFS and the other was formatted to FAT32. IMPORTANT
@All people who keep asking for NTFS:
It's not a backup manager or PSGroove issue, its a playstation one. The playstation doesn't support NTFS so it can not read the HDD if it is formatted in NTFS. It can not be easily be fixed. Only way to fix it is with custom firmware. And even if we have CF it will probably never happen as NTFS is very hard to implement. Only windows can use it and Linux can read it partially. If it was easy to implement then Linux would support it completely.

If anyone with more technical knowledge then me needs to correct me then please do, all who don't know anything about file systems please keep your comments to yourself as this will confuse people more.

      ************* [ - Post Merged - ] *************
NTFS support is unlikely, you really should be pushing for some linux file-systems like ext3 or ext2 which the PS3 seems to run in its internal drive or at least some variation of it.

testing tekken 6 right now with this method, congenie only worked for GOW collection
So did it work? Tekken 6, I mean?

Did not work for me. Tried putting it like this both on internal and external. No dice. :/

I use the faster method, just split the files in to two or three, depending on size on my NTFS laptop hard drive with HJ-Split, rename them <original file>.<original ext> the second part, <original file>.<original ext>.1.part then the third part <original file>.<original ext>.2.part, delete the original file which I have splitted, copy everything on to ext hdd, use comgenies awsome filemanager to copy in to internal hdd, and comgenies file manager merges the .part files in to a single over 4GB file on the internal ps3 hd. WAY FASTER THEN FTP, i get like 24mb/s from laptop to hdd and same from hdd to ps3. ftp is like 2mb/s

we have now the .PSARC extractor.

Is there no way to create a new .PSARC file after deleting other languages and so on?

no way to zip or rar... them and rename to .PSARC.

Which programm will be original used to create this file.

The fileextension is also used by Skype addons and SunOS 4.

I have them all installed as Windows 7 automatically installs 3.5 and I get same message or it just opens and closes right away.

To those who say GoW Collection doesn't work, it does! I've tried this myself today, played each game for a few minutes and everything was running fine.

I got the same issue as you guys at first though, and that's because rather than moving the files inside the "gow1" and "gow2" folders that appear once extracted, you're moving the folder themselves into the game folder. Open up those two folders and just move the files inside them into the appropriate game folders to get it to work, if that makes sense...

Problems here also.Backup manager aknowledges Resistance 1,Kill Zone 2 and Uncharted 1 and will show the chosen games intro thingy but when i got to start any of the games it crashes,as in no response,as in restart console.
I think Kill zone may have not crashed but it still only booted to a black screen.

Is there anywhere or anyone that can show the exact file structures necessary for it to work?
I know it should be obvious but nothing ive tried works unless its my choice of games???
Its easier to put the "game" folder containing the other folders etc back where psarc was rather than pasting in the actual folders extracted as they share names with already existing folders ie "Built" folder is also created. How do i merge show i dont paste over the old ones. Some folders have like 20 folders of movies etc, loads of files,it would take forever to paste them into the individulal twinned folders.

Tried this with Tekken 6 and although the program does extract the psarc file in to seperate files, the size of all the seperate files are not correct I think. Where the Tekken.psarc file is almost 5 gb the seperate files are less the 1 mb.

So is the program not working properly? Any tips would be helpful, runnning this on Windows 7 and I did install .net framework 4. I dont get any errors when trying to extract.

Found another extractor called open split which is java based but it just cuts the psarc into smaller files, but after that it will not run from ext hdd, you can only put it on the ext hdd and then transfer it to the int hdd.

**Edit, I just had to wait til the extraction was complete, but with Tekken 6 the extracted content is around 9gb and I put it on my ext hdd and started the game up, after the autosavee notification the game just hangs at a black screen. Is it known which games work when extrating the psarc file?

The file will not be on your hard drive as it will have been too big to copy there. Re-extract the file onto an NTFS partition on your PC an do the deed there and NOT on your USB drive.

I know you can't run games on ext if they are over 4gb, however why even post saying to back up the game folder to internal Hard drive when the whole point of this thread is "Run 4+GB Files from External Fat32 HDD"

Now, Did you mean actually backing up the whole game folder to internal harddrive or just the split files. if just the spit files, how do you back up just the split files with Gaia?

      Guys,

Can someone please tell me how to join split files on WinXP? Gaia automatically split my files and I need to rejoin them so I can then run this tool to extract!

Please don't tell me to have Gaia copy to my internal drive and then FTP. My internal drive is already full and it takes like 4 hours to transfer 22 GB over 100BaseTX ethernet.

I want to plug my USB drive into my laptop, join the split files and put back on USB.

      Thanks!

I want to plug my USB drive into my laptop, join the split files and put back on USB.

      Thanks!
      --AssChin79
You cant joi nthen then put back on usb. Files that are over 4gb cant fit onto a fat32 external thats the whole point in bm spliting them and is only realy so u can put on ninternal elsewhere.

I placed the psarc and zlb.net.dll into a file located on my desktop and then copied the file from killzone 2 into that then drug that file into the psarc ap and after about 45 minutes and several thousand files later it stopped...........and no file. Looking at my local disk I appear to be about 6 gig short so I assume the file is somewhere?? Where is it? What is it named so I can search for it?

Hi any luck getting killzone 2 to run from external drive. I got it work on my internal ps3 drive but no such like for the external. I used psarc to extract all the files then I put those files in the the same folder as the psarc archive was residing in and then transferred the whole game to the external hd. Every time I try to run from gaia 2.06 I just get blank screen. Are there certain games with psarc that can be played from external hard drive or do all psarc extracted games able to run from external.

      thanks

hey, how to get this working?

i extracted a psarcfile! now i got 6 folders. do i have to copy this 6 folders to the folder, where the psarc file was? or do i have to creat a new one and insert on there the 6 folders?

      eg: game/userdir/abc.psarc

after extract got 2 folders, abc1 and abc2

now i have to copy them to game/userdir/abc1
      and game/userdir/abc2 ???

      OR

      game/userdir/abc/abc1
      and
      game/userdir/abc/abc2

      ???

:D sry for my bad english...

To apoklyps3 and JeNeL : your path is too long. Move the BCES01007 in D:/, and you'll be able to extract kz3 psarc without error.

But... the game won't work from external drive lol.
Reading from external hdd seems, like a few other games, very very VERY slow. It crashes after 5 minutes of loading...

Finally after reading these forums all day!! And trying every fix possible, I got one working which is a combination of all of the above! I am running on 3.55 kmeaw and I have installed MultiMan 1.16.01. So here goes:

Step 1: Download and install MultiMan Backup Manager (find on google, couldnt upload it for some reason), new version is 1.16.01

Step 2: Use PS3Splitter (download link below) with the file data_ps3.psarc

      Step 3: Rename output files:
      1.) data_ps3.psarc
      2.) data_ps3.psarc.1.part
      3.) data_ps3.psarc.2.part

etc until you have all of them renamed. And yes you are naming the first one as just the default name with no .part after it. To do this you are going to have to make sure you have "hide extensions for known file types" unchecked in windows. In windows 7 you open a folder, click organize, then folder and search options, then the view tab, then uncheck it. So you have 10 parts with the last ending in 9.part.

Step 4: I deleted the original data_ps3.psarc from the folder (probably just move it or back it up to a different folder or drive, and copied these parts in exactaly where that was. Now I transfered the entire folder, which for me is BCES01007 over to your external, or possibly internal drive using whatever method works best for you. Right now I am running it off my external, but going to copy those parts over to my internal and I will update from there.

Step 5: Turn on your PS3 (making sure you have a BD Game in) and run your L2 Patcher, then open Multiman.

Step 6: Choose the Killzone 3 game and choose to not automatically launch the game, you want to go back to your XMB.

Step 7: Scroll to whatever game you have in your drive and it should now say "Killzone 3".

Now after the sony move screen my ps3 would go black and freeze until I did these steps, your screen should flash and then start loading! Here is my youtube video for proof. I did it quick with my iphone because I was excited lol. I showed the into trailer, and my ps3, and then I hit the PS button and showed that I was running the game and not just a clip! If you have any questions comment, I am going to spread this post across the forums, good luck!!!

for those having trouble extracting the fie, extract the file in the root of your hard drive when the program freezes is because a the name in the file is too long >>too long to explain just extract everything in the root of your hard drive and you are good to go

First of all I installed on internal and played off it. But I needed space on my internal as it is only 120GB. So I had to find some way to install and run it off external. After hours of digging, I found it on some forum, that we have to use psarc.exe but not the usual way, it is somewhat different and that's what I am going to share here.

Follow all the procedures mentioned in the above tutorial upto the point where it says about extracting the .psarc archives (4+GB files).

Now if you place the extracted folders, which in this case are:
      - GOW1 and GOW2 in their respective locations and remove the GOW1.psarc and GOW2.psarc files, this won't work. The game would freeze on the warning message as it does while playing off external anyway.
But surprisingly, this method works for UNCHARTED 2 AMONG THIEVES!

So in order to play, you have to move the folders located inside the GOW1 and GOW2 folders, to the location where you had the GOW1.psarc and GOW2.psarc files respectively.

Here it goes: (I is my external HDD's drive letter, yours may be different)

      Before Extraction:

      - I:\GAMEZ\BCUS-98229\PS3_GAME\USRDIR\GOW1\exec\GOW1.PSARC
      - I:\GAMEZ\BCUS-98229\PS3_GAME\USRDIR\GOW2\exec\GOW2.PSARC

      After Extraction:
      - I:\GAMEZ\BCUS-98229\PS3_GAME\USRDIR\GOW1\exec\GOW1(extracted folder having _movies, vfs and wad folders inside it)
      - I:\GAMEZ\BCUS-98229\PS3_GAME\USRDIR\GOW2\exec\GOW2(extracted folder having _movies and wad folders inside it)

So now, you just have to move the folders:

      - _movies, vfs and wad from GOW1 to this directory:
      I:\GAMEZ\BCUS-98229\PS3_GAME\USRDIR\GOW1\exec
and delete the empty folder GOW1.

So, now the folders should be this way:
      I:\GAMEZ\BCUS-98229\PS3_GAME\USRDIR\GOW1\exec

      • _movies
      • vfs
      • wad

Same would go for the GOW2 folder.

      I hope this helps.

Gaia manager splits the files over 4gb automatic when transfering to external drive. Never had a problem with it or multiMan or Rogero as far as playback.

to all the people who seem to think they can play split games off the external hdd without problems:

when the game requires data not present on the first split, your ps3 will freeze/crash the game/spit out an error/have audio issues etc

just like splitting a video into multiple parts, it will play for a while.
the ps3 will not magically follow the file sequence from part 1 to 2 etc.

Iris Manager will cache split files to the hdd making them one big file like it is supposed to be. Also the latest multiman has the hermes syscall and will allow the same thing but I couldnt get it to work.

I tried running KZ3, MOD:MW2 and Crysis 2 ripped from a friends disc using Multiman(Latest) with BDMEU2, it just doesnt go beyond the move screen or freezes.
On testing it thru MM it shows no split files. Is it neccesary to run thru spliting it even if i want to run it through my internal.
