Netkas, the legendary hackintosh hacker/programmer (essentially the DarkAlex of the OSX world), has just posted a short but interesting PS3 related post on his blog.

    To quote :

Here is something from lv2 dump

    CELL_FS_
    UTILITY:HDD0

    CELL_FS_UFS
    /dev_hdd0

ufs is a fs used by bsd systems

ps3 also supports iso9660, udf, fat, netfs (?)

but it seems for now only fat can be used on usb drive.

also, filesystem of /dev/flashX is FAT

UFS file system support obviously comes with BSD, but can be added to Windows (FFS, or Crossmeta), Linux (compiled into the kernel), OSX, Solaris and so forth.

It opens up quite a few possibilities. The most obvious is the ability to read/write to a PS3 formatted harddrive once its removed from your console. A far more interesting possibility would be finding a way to allow the PS3 to use UFS on USB devices. The FAT 4GB file size barrier would then become a non-issue.

    EDIT

This has been known for quite some time
    UFS

The PlayStation 3 game console uses UFS2 on HDD. The PlayStation 2 HDD used UFS as well.

It is great that someone else is studying the PS3 though :)

I Have issued a fix to address compiling with 1.92
There were some files corrupted in the last release!
If you have already migrated over to the last Multi SDK Release Please STOP Seeding and delete it!
I have tested this release compiling and recompiling over 100 times with apps created for both 1.92 and 3.41 without issue.
If you are compiling an app for use with 3.41 make sure to edit the .SFO of your app to have an APP Ver.

This is a VirtualBox Image of Ubuntu_x86 10.10 with tools to compile PS3 Jailbreak Files As Well As PS3 Applications/Packages.
This Release Has Multi SDK Support Both 3.41 and 1.92!

    You will need:

    VirtualBox – Included

Login info once you get up and running:

    User = evilsperm
    Pass = password
    sudo su password = password

To switch back and forth from 3.41 SDK to 1.92 SDK is very easy.

    To switch SDK’s:

On the desktop you will see a folder called SDK_Selector
Open that Dir and double click on the SDK you woudld like to use.
Select Run In Terminal, type in the password and hit enter.
The Terminal will disappear and the SDK you selected is ready for use!

This is a **Final Stable Release** until a new SDK is leaked.

We won’t give you the download link for this file, but google will be your friend (SDKPS3 Multi SDK 3.41 – 1.92Ubuntu VirtualBox – Jailbreak)

Zaxtron Front End has been updated to v0.3 (which is a multi-firmware and payload solution for users.)
You can manage the payloads now!

    v0.3 – 10/24/2010
    * Fixed support for iPod Touch 1G, now you can cycle through all FW versions and payloads
just pressing Power button (works on iPhone too)
    * Improved message system to help PS3 Slim users figure out the exact moment to unplug USB
    * Access to iPhone nand storage (/private/var), on Front End v3 first run it creates a
folder under /private/var called psfreedom, this folder contains all firmwares used by
Front End. Now You can manage the payloads – add, remove, change. (only psfreedom v1.1
    compatible payloads)
    * Payloads added to the “all” folder are not firmware dependent and will be available for
selection on Front End for all PS3 Firmware.
    * Timeout changed to 1 min.
    * Once fired, it will display the time remaining to Timeout occur.
    * All current payloads already added (23 total)

    Can be downloaded here http://psfreedom.com/wiki/IPhoneLinux

It seems that a number of PS3Keys have been devices with the wrong bootloader, the devices in question are those with the serial number between 1001 0300 0000-x and 1001 0300 0999-x, here is a quote from the official site:

During a routine audit of our systems, it came to light that a small number of PS3Keys were sent out with an incorrect bootloader. If your PS3Key serial number is between 1001 0300 0000-x and 1001 0300 0999-x then you are affected. Please contact your point of sale who will be happy to exchange it for you.

We have already sent notifications to the distributors that we supplied this stock to, so their resellers should already be aware of their situation. If they are not, just send them a link to this news article. We have already provided our distributors new stock, so getting a replacement should be a very straightforward process.

If you have a PS3Key within the affected serial number range, you may not notice any abnormal activity. However, due to the problem with the bootloader on these particular dongles, unforeseen and unpredictable issues may occur in the future. Therefore, we encourage everyone with a PS3Key within this range to return it to their point of sale for replacement immediately.

We’d also like to stress that this issue is NOT a hardware-related issue but rather an issue related to the bootloader. However, because the bootloader is required to update PS3Key, it is not possible to release an update to replace the bootloader.

We’d like to apologize for any inconvenience that this issue causes anyone. We place the current and future reliability of PS3Key above all else which is why we decided to make this announcement.

Thank you for your continued support of PS3Key!

    PS3Key
Thanks to Hailfire101 for the tip.

AVCHD Game Manager has changed its name and is now known officially as multiMAN, here is a quote from the source:

Formerly known as AVCHD and Game Manager, it has now been called simply as multiMAN. The word multi is very essential to the modded Open Backup Manager because the manager itself has a multifunctional tools – not just to backup your PS3 games. Try it when it’s still hot (multiMAN 1.07.02).

lousyphreak of PSX-Scene has announced that he is working on a ScummVM port for the PS3. First off what is ScummVM?

    To quote:

ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!

ScummVM supports many adventure games, including LucasArts SCUMM games (such as Monkey Island 1-3, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, …), many of Sierra’s AGI and SCI games (such as King’s Quest 1-6, Space Quest 1-5, …), Discworld 1 and 2, Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2, Beneath A Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress, Broken Sword 1 and 2, Flight of the Amazon Queen, Gobliiins 1-3, The Legend of Kyrandia 1-3, many of Humongous Entertainment’s children’s SCUMM games (including Freddi Fish and Putt Putt games) and many more.

The author has released his initial source code, and this project is still a work in progress, to quote from the author:

Hi, I am currently working on a ScummVM port for the PS3, much of it already works, but there are still some points which need fixing. The Source is located at lousyphreak’s scummvm-ps3 at ps3 – GitHub it builds with the leaked 1.92 SDK, no .pkg yet, it needs to be launched via the homebrew mode of Gaia Manager (the only one i tested it with)

    What works:

    1.) most of it

    What doesn’t:

I have only tried a handful of games, this list is by far not complete.

1.) You will get corrupted palettes in most games (corruption is usually just minor)
2.) Beneath a Steel Sky crashes during the intro
3.) Many scumm games crash when showing the overlay (Start button)
4.) in some games the cursor has no transparent colors
    5.) slowdowns may occur
6.) MT32 emu shows problems at least in MI2

You can bet we can see some real neat PS3 homebrew games in the future :)

You can download the source below (requires v1.9 SDK to compile):

Mac users always get the boot in new scene releases, as people primarily release stuff for Windows first, or previous software is not supported (Amtel FLIP).  One of the key issues with MacOSX was that Mac users were not able to update their PSJailbreak clones (such as PS3Break). Tools such as VMWare and parallel do not work, and those who do not wish to install bootcamp (why would you anyways), there is another solution available to you.

Hardcore-Mac user Marcello has contacted me today letting me know of his little discovery on exactly how he updated PS3Break on Mac, without boot camp. He only attempted in updating the PS3Break dongle, but in theory it should work with others as well.

You can view the full tutorial below, the tutorial is also posted on Marcello’s blog, which you can visit HERE.

How to flash a ps3break 1.0 with mac osx:

    NEW METHOD (thank’s to ScotthishCpt)
with this procedure you do not install anything because ScotthishCpt built a self-contained SDK, and when you’re done, just unmount the disk image without trace or driver in the system.

    1) download from here modify version of Avr8_sdk
    2) double click on (AVR8_SDK.dmg) and mount the volume (avr8_sdk)
    3) browse to Applications directory in the volume
    4) launch SDK TERMINAL
    5) at this time insert the ps3break key in the usb port in DFU mode (click the upgrade button immediately after it’s inserted)
    6) if the key is correctly in DFU mode the green light should be off, you can check it by opening system profile —> USB. you should have a windows like this ( AT90USB162 DFU ) :

Many of you who use KaKaRoTo PL3 payload may have come across an issue where your existing rips did not work. According to a tweet by KaKaRoTo, the issue lies in if you use the Hermes payload. He says that for some reason if you install a game VIA Hermes payload, it seems that the game becomes “locked” to his payload. The fix is to simply UN-install the game, and re-install it with the PL3 payload, and it will work with all other payloads without issues.

iLLNESS confirmed to me that if you install a game with hermes payload, then it will only work with his payload. Seems the payload locks it.

Uninstall games, then reinstall them when using PL3 then they will work with any payload. Don’t know what’s different though with hermes pay

Here is an ancient way to play PS3 games online on lower firmwares. This method does not involve the connection of PSN, but rather via LAN on XlinkKai.

Yeah, yeah, it’s not as perfect as PSN, but at least you can play online before the anticipated release from PSJailbreak for newer firmware support. That if you are desperate enough to get it online as there are only handful of thousand gamers of different consoles online at the same time. I will put the tutorial here anyway since i think there are some who are interested to ‘break’ online.

    1. First, you must register an account with XLink at http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/signup.php. You don’t have to fill out all details, only * are important.

    2. Then, download XLink Kai which is in http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/downloads.php/ and simply run the installer.

    3. Here comes the difficult part, which is forwarding your port. It is quite different depending on the type of your router. By default, its usually goes at 192.168.1.1. You must login and go into the port forwarding section. See how to port forward your router below http://portforward.com/english/applications/port_forwarding/Xlink_Kai/Xlink_Kaiindex.htm

    4. Just set protocol to “both” (UDP & TCP) and the port from 30000 to 34522 then save and apply.

    5. Now run the Xlink Kai Evolution VII program, if your are running Windows 7 right click -> properties -> run in Windows Xp SP2 and check run as administrator. (Click allow if there is any prompt window about firewall)

    6. This time, it should open up a configuration page. Simply entering your username and password from the XLink account you have created before, also check application GUI if it is set into the web GUI. This is optional as it will have an easier navigation.

    7. Click the green arrow to login (If your not already logged into XLink), power on your Jailbroken PS3 console and you should get a DNS Error on startup. You don’t have to worry about this as it is normal.

    8. Finally, click on the magnify glass with the folder icon below the “?”. If it says “PS2/PS3 is configured successfully” , i must congratulate you as you are now connected to XLink and can host LAN parties.

    Supported Games For This Method:
    Borderlands
    Call of Duty 4
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
    Call of Duty W@W
    Condemned 2
    F.E.A.R
    Haze
    OFP Dragon Rising
    Rainbow Six Vegas
    The Darkness
    TimeShift
    Unreal Tournament 3
    Armored Core 4
    Blazing Angels 2
    Blur
    DiRT
    DiRT 2
    F1 2010
    Formula 1 Championship
    H.A.W.X 2
    Dark Sector
    Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2
    Kane & Lynch Dead Man
    Red Dead Redemption
    Red Fraction Guerrilla
    Saints Row 2
    Warhawk

Should i sign in with PSN on my PS3?

    * As you are probably on Jailbroken mode, no, you don’t need to sign in with your PSN account.
