It has been about three and a half months, since PS Jailbreak was first announced, you can find the first post here, since then there has been a lot of progress in the scene, from an Open Source version(PSGroove/PSFreedom) of PS Jailbreak being created, to Sony blocking any jailbreak methods with firmware 3.42 and much more, here i will attempt to create a very detailed F.A.Q.
Q.) What firmwares can i jailbreak my PS3 on.
A.) 2.76, 3.01, 3.15, 3.21, 3.40 and 3.41
Q.) Can Firmwares higher than 3.41 be Jailbroken
A.) No, Sony blocked the method when they released Firmware 3.42 and at this present time, there is no way to Jailbreak beyond 3.41.
Q.) I accidentally upgraded to 3.42/3.50, can i downgrade to a Jailbreakable Firmware.
A.) Yes, the scene is full of open source downgraders, the following list of devices are able to do downgrading:

[Tutorial] Downgrade, Using PS Jailbreak
Q.) When jailbreak came out, i upgraded to 3.41, loosing Linux, can i have Linux again.
A.1) As i stated above, there is a downgrade method, so using that, it will be possible to downgrade again to 3.15.
A.2) If you aren’t interested in downgrading or you have a Slim PS3, marcan, is working on a boot loader, that will enable Linux once again on PS3′s past 3.15, check out AsbestOS
Q.) I cant afford nor am i willing to pay $99 for the Official Jailbreak, is there any other methods.
A.) Yes you can, you can buy a clone dongle of PS jailbreak, a Dev Board or mobile devices, such as iPhone or HTC Desire.

Q.) So i have been hearing about payload’s
A.) KaKaRoTo and Hemes are the two most famous payload creators, these payloads add various functions, for example, the payload that allowed 3.41 users to access PSN, original created by Xoeo, make sure you have the most up to date payload.

Q.) So how do i actually Jailbreak the PS3
A.) Well each jailbreak device is different, for instance, on the HTC Desire, you put the phone into recovery mode and select the payload, you then plug the phone into the USB cable, which should be plugged into the first USB port on the left of your console, then(this applies to all jailbreak devices) Power of the PS3, with switch at back for Fat and pull the plug out for Slim’s, re-switch/plug on/in, then press power followed by eject, if done correctly, you should be greeted with two new folders in the games list on the XMB
Q.) Is my console permanently Jailbroken
A.) No, you need to Jailbreak each time you power on your device.
Q.) So how do i Backup games
A.) You need to install a Backup manager, there are quite a few available

Q.) What are my options for backing up games.
A.) You can install games on the PS3′s internal HDD or use an External USB HDD, which needs to be formatted to FAT32, you can also use a FAT32 USB Thumb Drive, note that with FAT32 you are limited to games with single files under 4GB, if you prefer all your games to be on the internal HDD, you can get up to 1TB 2.5″ HDD, or you can use the Xecuter PS3 HDXT method and have your internal HDD on the outside of the machine, the benefit of this, is that you can use 3.5″ Sata and IDE HDD’s as internal storage.

- maximum height is 9,5mm (many 2.5″ drives above 640GB are too high too fit inside)
- maximum PS3 filesystem is 1TB (512KB block size)
- maximum FAT32 theoretical size is 8TB, practical limit on the PS3 is 2TB
- 7200rpm can be used, as well as Flashdrives (although the 1/5th lower loadingtime of GTA5 can be considered too low to justify the higher pricetag of SATA Flashdrives.
- SATAII-300 can be used, although it will work on SATA1-150 speed interface.
- If using external 3.5″ drives hooked up to the internal SATA, you’ll need an external powersupply (some drivebays include them).
- If on low budget or you like DIY: use a normal extension (male to female) SATA cable (and make sure it doesn’t get loose) and recycle the case + powersupply of an external USB harddisk (without using the USB connection/conversion).
- Don’t use RAID or SAN drives with (e)SATA interface, just a plain single drive with a bare SATA connector (many controllers don’t work without drivers/software).
- Games can be hardcoded for BluRay speeds (9MB/s) so sticking a 85~220MB/s harddrive inside will not speedup everything/allways (but most do).
- If you plan on exchanging the drive, download the full PUP of your FW you are using and put it on an USB Mass Storage Device formatted with FAT32 in PS3UPDATEPS3UPDAT.PUP and disconnect the LAN before repowering the PS3 (or you’ll bound to end up with the latest (3.55 now) unjailbreakable/undowngradable version).
- Use a good fitting X screwdriver, the screws fitted to the HD<>tray are made of very soft aluminium.

Q.) Ok, i have downloaded a Backup Manager, that i want to use, how do i install it.
A.) You need to put the PKG on the root of a thumb drive and install, by selecting “Install Package Files” on the XMB, in the games section.
Q.) Ok im fed up with using my thumb drive, is there a way to download apps directly to the PS3.
A.) Yes, though you will have to install this one last app via thumb drive, it mounts a virtual Thumb Drive on the PS3 MHUFreeStore, here is a video:
Q.) So i have heard some games will not work, how do i find out, which game does or doesn’t work.
A.) Well i could list each one here, but i wont, instead visit PSJCL(PS Jailbreak Compatibility List), created by Bash, OnePlayer, Chris, Neowarex, Meeplo and xnt14, it is without a doubt, it is the definitive site for PS3 game Backup compatibility information.
Q.) Ok so i have backed up a game, i want to save that game to my computer as an extra backup, or i want to mod the game, how do i transfer it from my PS3.
A.) There are two methods, FTP, there are three of those at the moment:

A.) No, it isn’t possible, Sony has blocked all attempts to access PSN, we had it back for a while thanks to Xoeo, but that was also blocked, who knows, perhaps in the future.

A.) Yes you can, but not via PSN, you need to use XkaiLink and XBSlink and this will have you playing via LAN.

Q.) People are saying that i can get banned from PSN, if i Jailbreak my PS3, is this true
A.) At the moment no, there is no actual cases of bans happening because of Jailbreak
Q.) I decided to downgrade my console using a debug firmware, i got five beeps then it shut down, is it bricked, can i fix it
A.) When you start messing with different firmwares, you run the risk of bricking your console, forum member gliitch did exactly that
though he was able to fix it and wrote quite an informative tutorial on how to fix it here
Q.) Ok so i have gone through the process of jailbreaking and successfully unbricking etc, i want to be braver and attempt more exiting exploits, like writing to the flash, is this possible.
A.) JaiCraB & ps3mrenigma released an app called Mount Alejandro which enables you to write to flash, you can read more about it here
Q.) I would like to modify the XMB, make it more custom, is this possible
A.) TeaM-ACiD1C brought out a modified XMB, you need to use Mount Alejandro if you want to write to the flash, you can find more about it here, it also has the download link
Q.) I have always hated that annoying boot sound the PS3 makes, when it is turned on, can i change it
A.) You certainly can, gliitch has written a great tutorial here it will show you how to change the sound and make yourown, or you can simply download the sounds made by gliitch and other members

I have two FAT systems. One has a broken disc drive. The jailbreak works and homebrew apps work, but I still have not been able to get backups to play from the ext HDD or int HDD on the system with the damaged disc drive.
Judging by inquiries on other boards, others are having similar problems. So to add to the FAQ could you elaborate on 1) the process to play games from the ext HDD/int HDD (problems with eboot.bin, etc) and 2) is it possible to use a system with a damaged disc drive to play backups.

If you like simpler numbers, the current lowest Jailbreakable FW for all models is FW 3.01 (JB on FW 2.76 seems to have problems have I read)
If you want to give tips on which dongle to buy: Eclips3 (ATmega16A), PS Samurai (ATmega32U2), PS3USBJailbreak (ATmega16) can flash ANY HEX or PAYLOAD.BIN and are provided with an enduser update application, no need for Atmel FLIP or encrypted flash files like PS3Key (ATmega32U2).
X3Max ($30,-@vgcrepairs.biz), E3 Card Reader ($18.59 with retailmenot coupon @ lightake.com) and P3Go GT-break (mostly $29,99) can handle dual/large payloads with 32GB microSD capability (but they seem to unhappy to disclose what HW is used [P3Go GT-break SDK looks JZ47X5 based).

Hey guys, having massive trouble flashing my Jailbreak.
It's an origianal version, using 1.3 updater, but for some reason keep receiving "FLASH FAILED" error message when trying to flash. Have read 1000's of posts (literally) and while others have had this problem, no one has been able to give a reason as to why or a solution.
I'm running a windows 7 x86 bit. Any help would be really appreciated.

i was just curious as to whether the majority of PSJB users here are using clones or the original PSJB dongle? I've only heard about the whole PSJB today whilst browsing the net after completing all my exams.. I was literally about to purchase the original dongle from Gadget Asia now but a few people on other forums have complained that they're dongles don't seem to work after purchasing from Gadget Asia so i'm a little reluctant now as im from the UK..
where did most of you guys pick up your dongles from and have you had any problems???

I bought my ps jailbreak from gadget-asia as they are the authorized seller and you can find it from the developer's website. Their after service is good, after my purchasing, I came across few problems. I sent emails and even live chat with them and they guides me. gadget-asia is reliable :thefinger:

Hi everyone!
I have my slim ps3 with firmware 3.30, but I read that this is not supported by the ps jailbreak.
Indeed when I switch on my ps3 with the jaibreak connected, the message "unknown dispositive" is shown.
So, what I can do to upgrade to 3.41?

I got one question, Let's say i hack my playstation 3 with my iphone 3g and it was a success, then i used backup manager to backup dead rising 2 after that i turn off my playstation then i turn it back on will it still have all those files? (Backup manager) Etc...
1. Will i have to repeat the process? To use backup manager?
2. Also, I do have a netflix account and it does require me to sign in, is it
possible?
3.can i use stealth ps3hax to sign in? then sign out after?

Hi guys, been away for a few months so am just catching up with the scene once again. Is there a way of booting backup games without a disc in the blu ray drive? sorry if this has been answered somewhere else on here but i just wanted to ask the question here, if yes what do i need to do or are there any tuts on this method?

Great list. Anyone out there to help me with a dingoo? I have psfreedom v1.5 on mine, and I have installed BM (tried 1, 1.1), but I'm having an issue loading my backups. I attempt to load it, it goes back to the xmb, but the orig disc is read, not my backup. These are my purchased games, so no funny business in the file (Army of Two and MGS4). Does the dingoo support BM? Maybe there's something with the psfreedom on the dingoo? I've formatted the hd, uninstalled, reinstalled the BM and zimage, I'm on 3.41. The psf dingoo file came with a .diff patch that I'm not sure how to apply it - could that be it? Any help for a new ps3 owner would be greatly appreciated.

excellent post. ivebeen on with jailbreaking my ps3 since plast night, and this has helped me massively. im a total newbie to jailbreaking ps3's but i do have a little knowledge of chipping and jailbreaking ( right back to the days of magic drives, snes's and playstation 1's!!)
anyway, where im at now. i have a ps jailbreak metal usb dongle, i loaded it using the flip software and put the hermes ver.3 beta1006 hex onto my psjailbreak usb.
i have my console updated to 3.41, and i performed the procedure and now have the backup manager installed on my system.
now, i have figured out how to back up my games, but i have 3 problems.
1 - how do i play a backup that is on a disc already (disc format, not on HDD)
2 - i have a back up disc of GT5. this apparently asks for an update to 3.50 before it can be played. i was told this needs patched. how do i do this?
3 - what exactly is the hermes hex thing for? i dont quite understand alot of the stuff going on yet with all this, so its a game of catch up for me.
also, is it possible for me to copy backup ps3 discs to hard drive via drag and drop via pc to HDD?
i have spent hours going through topics, and it is due to the useful info on the site i have got this far without asking for help, so thanks to all the invaluable info guys, but now im stuck so need some help with this. i have tried the search option, as well as tutorials.

u cant play gt5 on jb ps3
u can use ftp black box for ps3 and ziller client on pc to move games from pc to ps3
hermes hex is a hex file for jailbreaking as u already been jailbreaking ya ps3 u dont need it
i dont think u can run a back up off a disc ,

Thanks for this good information. I am new user and this information is very useful for me. I just bought PS3 v3.5 and I have updated with v.3.55. Please help me to clear some of my doubt. "I can not buy game disks due to money problem" I got PS3 as a gift but I really want to play.
1) Can I downgrade my PS3 v3.55 to v3.41 until we do not get any upgraded cheap dongle to work with v3.55?
2) Procedure or link which provide me to make the copy of jailbreak dongle (or any dongle) by myself.
3) How to connect my PC to the PS3, So I can access PS3 blue-ray disk to copy any blu-ray disk games/sogtware/movie in to the PC. (I don't have HDMI port in my PC)
4) If I download games from torrent. Will it work in my PS3?
5) Can I play PS2 games downloaded from torrent in PS3?
6) PS3 have option to create PS2/PSP disk space. What is this?

Jailbreak fw 3.55 with any flashdrive that the ps3 can read. then theres no need to downgrade and lose BD Movie readability. as for playing ps2/pirated ps3 games, youre on your own. I know I'm not going to touch that subject with a 40 foot pole, because it isnt exactly legal. SWIM is currently testing it out, and will update with info about it.

So you want to steal from Sony? you have got no money? than go outside and play.. dont play pirated copies its ILLEGAL!! If you cant afford it than find other ways of entertainment.
Back up managers are for your own LEGIT copy!.
P.S It's ppl like u who give the jailbreaks a bad name.. We want backup manager to use as backups while u want to pirate it shame on u son.

you said that you cannot jailbreak firmware 3.42?but i found one jailbreaking site that says Jailbreak PS3 Firmware 3.56? so is this website legit? the link is http://ps3-jail-break.blogspot.com/2...6-updated.html can you confirm it because i do some research about jailbreaking and i cannot find a trustworthy site so i read the F.A.Q's but i can't understand some of it like payload,debug etc.

You can Jailbreak 3.41 with a dongle like E3, you can also downgrade from 3.42 or 3.50 to 3.41, with that exact same device, or you can upgrade to 3.55 using a custom firmware.
