For all the nostalgic fans of the Megadrive/Geneisis you’ll be happy to know that Anyonmus has updated Genesis Plus from beta to 1.0
Improvements are:
* A new and better rom menu from Snes9x
* Added settings for enabling/disabling FPS
* Stretch screen, pal60
* Auto detection of the refresh rate
* Fixed sound
* Added savestates
* Shader Filter X2SaI, Hq4x, Super Eagle and many others
I am currently testing it out now, i will give a full review later on.
My review will be split into sections
Audio, Video, Savestates, Saves (hardcoded into game) and overall userbility.
As far as impressions go, this is a damn fine stab at a first proper Sega Emulator.
Audio:
Its getting there, its slightly jumpy and it skips in parts, but i think it various from set to set.
Ive tested this emulator on both a HDTV and the SDTV. On the SDTV the sound is slow but there are not may jumps and glitches.
Where as on the HDTV the jumps and skips are far more noticable
Also it depends on the types of games you play as well. For instance I was playing Phantasy Star III and the sound was jumpy, when you pressed the PS Button, where as on Sonic 2 i did the same thing and it was pretty much perfect.
I have noticed it also depends on what type of filter you use. It would seem (at least for now) some games can not handle some filters, as they slow down to a crawl Phantasy Star III slows down so much that it is unplayable.
But if you change the filter to say Stock, it works just fine. Perhaps these things is what the developer should look out for.
Video:
I cant really say much about the video, beside the point i made earlier about the filters slowing down games.
Stretch mode works well, fills the screen up nicely.The scaling is good, although some of the screen gets cut off.
Useablity: Works preety well as you’d think a V1.0 would. It has had substantual improments to the version we saw only days ago. Its pretty much had an overhaul.
Some of the options do not work well, for instance the (PAL60) if you try to use 580 or whatever it is, on a tellie that clearly supports it, it will just quit and go back to the XMB.
The usb stick still needs to be in the USB000 Slot (furthest one to the right.) Also it needs the gensplus folder in the [ROoT] of the usb stick otheriwise it will not start at all.
*I think you maybe able to boot ROMS from the internal drive, as you can use the inbuilt search menu to look for them. This theory is untested atm.*
Savestates: These are implimented now and do work.
Saves however at least from my experience dont work.
Overall i think Anonymous has done a suberb job and I eagerly await his or hers next upcoming releases.
