• Backup Managers, PS3 Hacks , 09.01.2011

While most people are eagerly waiting for a backup manager to accompany the Geohot CFW, it seems that Riku.kh3 has managed to boot PS3 game backup (Castlevania: Lords of Shadow) WITHOUT the need of a BM. What he did was essentially trick the PS3 into thinking that the game backup is actually a PSN game (by patching EBOOT.BIN).

So how do you patch your own EBOOT? Well Riku.kh3 has posted a small guide below, it by no means is newb friendly and requires you to know what you are doing, to quote:

    1) Download and compile latest tools from git.fail0verflow.com Git (old versions of unself produce incorrect ELF)
    2) Extract ELF from SELF
    3) Hexedit ELF, find and replace dev_bdvd to correct path on dev_hdd0 (not all, but most games require this step)
    4) Build NPDRM SELF using Geohot’s tools
    5) Build package using psn_package_npdrm
    6) Patch your builded package using Geohot’s tool (only for 3.55 firmware)

That’s it. If you can’t follow this guide, more detailed guide won’t help you.

    //RikuKH3

And here is the modified EBOOT for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow:

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (BLES01047) signed&packed EBOOT (33.5MB)

Multiupload.com – upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!

    1) Install PKG file.
    2) Transfer contents of USRDIR folder, EXCEPT EBOOT.BIN, to /devhdd0/game/BLES01047/USRDIR/

Thats all! Tested! The game will work from XMB on retail nonJB 3.41, 3.55 and future versions.

Let us know your results with other games.

[VIA PSX-SCENE] – Thanks to StevieD and SaveU for the news tip!

If you would like to keep the game on the USB I guess you could rather use dev_hdd1

This could be bad and good. But the fact that it's THAT hard...and requires ALLL that just to get a backup running...is a bit annoying. Let's hope Geo can fix this to the point where we either will be able to run backups without a program...or enable the backup managers to work like they should. Technically if it's a CFW it should be able to already run backups...PSP doesn't need a program to run backups. See what I am getting at?

Just to clear up on some things about this,
#Yes while doing this you will be able to play online but it isn't recomended
#Disc based games are default loaded from dev_bddvd (the disc drive)
#Changing the location of the game to dev_hdd0 allows it to be launched off the hard drive like a downloaded psn game
#But this will not allow the games to be played of an external drive, to do this (not fully tested yet) instead of changing the value to dev_hdd0 change it to dev_usb0 (most likely left usb port)

EDIT: As I'm very busy right now I'd appreciate it if some people tried various usb locations and reply if it worked dev_usb0 , dev_usb1 , dev_usb0000 etc

EDIT2: Try this as you would with an external drive for a backup manager using same directory etc

Step two doesn't say what file needs to go where. It seems like it's saying, "copy files from usrdir to usrdr", which would be pointless. Someone please restate step two in a more clear way.

I know you werent talking to me but you seem to know what your doing so I wanted to ask a quick question or two if you dont mind.

I currently have an older release of a sdk setup. It came with a "couple" different versions of the sdk. Should I use those or just scrap them and go with the latest psl1ght?

how do I get/use the most current fail0verflow tools. I attempted to use git with what I have but just dont seem to understand something.

I havent really delt with any linux distro since the early days of Red Hat and Mandrake. I did tinker some with ubuntu when it was in its infancy. I do have some knowledge but its been so long I am a little lost.

I am not asking for anyone to do anything for me other than point me in the right direction. I want to do it myself. I cant for the life of me get the basic environment set up right. Is there a dummies guide or refresher course somewhere that can help me get up and running? I have tried searches and reading and experimenting but its like I am chasing my tail.

If your sufficient enough at using the sdk's for development I'd recommend having both just using differnt directories for each I would use /dev/PS3/sdk and /dev/PS3/sdk(version)

The get fail0verflow gits through terminal:
      mkdir dev/PS3/fail0verflow
      cd ~/dev/PS3/fail0verflow
      git clone git://fail0verflow.com/ps3tools
cd /ps3tools (if doesnt work use cd ~/dev/PS3/fail0verflow/ps3tools)
      make
      make install

I can't give you a tutorial on PSL1GHT because I'm having a few small difficulties myself but if you managed to install ps3 sdk you shouldn't be to hard

It means to copy the files from your GAMEZ folder on your external or if you have the game on your internal do it that from from you LUAN12345 or whatever the ext is. Basically after you install the pkg file you just need to put the rest of the files and 1 folder from the USRDIR folder. I hope that helps. I screwed it up the 1st time I tried and forgot to copy over the Videos folder haha. It was easiest to use MUlTIman for me cause it was easy to see what you had and hadnt copied.

When you look through a backup of a game on a pc there will be a folder called USRDIR
You have to ftp the contents of this folder (except the EBOOT.BIN) over to /devhdd0/game/BLES01047/USRDIR/

Transfer the files of the castlvania usrdr except for the EBOOT.bin file into the /devhdd0/game/BLES01047/USRDIR/ which already contains the signed EBOOT.bin file and wallah it should be in the xmb under game

Ok, to get the files you will need the following:

      a PS3 SDK (real or PSL1GHT)
      patience

      If on Windows:
      google 'GIT for Windows'

If on Linux (I use ubuntu)
type in the terminal sudo apt-get install git

      Then in ubuntu type
      git clone git://git.fail0verflow.com/ps3tools.git
and it will save all the files into the current directory you are in (usually HOME)

In Windows Load up GIT4WINDOWS and select clone and type this URL
      git://git.fail0verflow.com/ps3tools.git

It will save in the location you choose, to do so yo would do something like
      C:\Users\User1\Documents\git
then after that add the following \PS3Tools

Then if on Linux navigate to the folder in terminal and type
      Make
      Make install

if on Windows load up msys or cgywin and navigate to the location and type make

then the tools are made and you are done, I had trouble trying to compile on msys so I used cygwin, after this follow the instructions.

That is actually a good question I'll do some research and find out in therory (if installed and signed right) the ps3 should see it as an installed psn like game/app, but just remember geohot's cfw bypasses sign checks so it might only work with KaKaRoTo's cfw

Ok, I just managed to decrypt the MW2 EBOOT.bin file and am now HEX editing it, but the tut said 'replace dev_bdvd with hdd0 and add proper location' now the decrypted.elf file I'm using has this line of code

      Code:
      /dev_bdvd/PS3_GAME/USRDIR/default.self
should I just change it to

      Code:
      /dev_hdd0/PS3_GAME/USRDIR/default.self
      or should it be like

      Code:
      /dev_hdd0/game/BLES00683/USRDIR/default.self
since the final game will be in hdd0/game/<GAME CODE> instead of the root of a blu-ray

      @ Jirachi99

dev_hdd0 is telling the ps3 that its location is on the hard drive. I'm sure you understand that.

anything after that NEEDS to follow the exact file structure that is used for your games locations.

      Example:

In windows - lets say you are looking for a particular .mp3 stored on the hard drive. I will use "GZA - Duel Of The Iron Mic.mp3" My music is stored on an external hdd with a drive letter of "F"
It's location on my pc would be - F:/Music/Wu-Tang/Solos/GZA/LiquidSwords/Duel Of The Iron Mic.mp3

The F Drive is the equivalent of dev_hdd0
After that the EXACT File Structure MUST be followed!

      EDIT:

Actually, i think you should change ONLY dev_bdvd to dev_hdd0 as you are hex editing. If you add anything else to the path it will ovewrite existing data which has nothing to do with game path, turning that eboot.bin into a corrupt and useless file.

I think PS3 will assume that the game will always be stored in "game" folder located at the root of the storage device, followed by the game id which is automatically obtained.

      Didn't tried though.

3.55 CFW with Peek and Poke (Backup Manager compatible. No Jailbreak Dongle Required) [Region-Free/Other/2011]
this ha sjust been upped to a tracker im a member of with quotes from irc
Patch to add peek and poke syscalls to PS3 firmware 3.55
      by flukes1 and netkas (irc.efnet.net #ps3test)

      To create the patched PS3UPDAT.PUP:
      1. Use bspatch to apply PS3UPDAT.PUP.bsdiff to Sony's official 3.55 PUP, which is available from their website.
      2. Ensure that the md5sum of the resulting PS3UPDAT.PUP is 337831fac6a9b05074f73710c4bb7c86

Simply install the patched PS3UPDAT.PUP onto your PS3, then install geohot's jailbreak.

Our PUP can be installed over any firmware version, including 3.55-geohot. If you install over 3.55-geohot, you must reinstall geohot's jailbreak afterwards.

For developers: peek is syscall 6, poke is syscall 7 (same as PL3 dev payload)

Props to mastag22, lastExile, Killer_In - our testers with balls of steel.

      Enjoy!
      - flukes1, netkas
this is it by the looks of things.

      I think that
      /dev_hdd0/game/BLES00683/USRDIR/default.self
is the right path, only if you put all your game files in the same way -
      /dev_hdd0/game/BLES00683/USRDIR
and if you want to load your game from external drive, you must write something like this
      /dev_usb0000/GAMEZ/BLES00683/USRDIR/default.self
      just IMHO, sorry for mistakes

Just want to pay my respects to all the devs who made this possible.
Finally we can use homebrew (maybe a vid player with mkv support in the near future?).

I sure hope the method for being able to launch backups will simplify soon.
I tried the tut for a couple of hours, but I guess I lack the technical knowledge.
I lost it somewhere in between PSL1GHT, PS3TOOLS and MSYS.

It would be great to have all of my games on the HDD ready to play instead of having to swap discs all the time...

And by the way. To all the "SONY IN YOU FACE" "SERVES YOU RIGHT" comments:

Without Sony we wouldn't have this great console to begin with. You can't blame them for trying to keep their console secure and to prevent piracy and cheating. They need to make their profit too.... You can't expect them to do it all for free.

A small jump back to Castlevania for a noob :

I've succeeded to install CFW 3.55, file manager etc.

But I encounter the same problem as many do with this step:

      1) Install PKG file.
      2) Transfer contents of USRDIR folder, EXCEPT EBOOT.BIN, to /devhdd0/game/BLES01047/USRDIR/

Does step 2 mean you have to have the original disc/file where USRDIR is located? Because it's not mentioned anywhere if the .pkg file is the complete game or not.

The /devhdd0/game/BLES/01047/USRDIR on the PS3 I can find.

EDIT: In the meantime found out that you indeed have to get the full game. And there of course is the USRDIR... ;-)

I completely fail to see how obvious it is that which you say.

How exactly does it make Jailbreak obsolete? You still need a way to place the eboot on the ps3 unless I am mistaken. I find it absurd how everyone around here who knows what is possible and impossible and what is obsolete and what is necessary and valid.
Please correct me if I'm wrong but you seem to not know what you're talking about.

I guess I'm just one person and if I don't like this site I can get my information someplace else, but the greater population of these forums are very disappointing. I love ps3hax but people like this ruin it for me.

Sorry bud just so I understand what your asking, do you mean can you put games disks in pc then ftp it across. sorry I don't think you can, put there maybe a way that I don't know about. I put the game in the ps3 then with ftp I did a copy of disk to my usb drive in the ps3. then run the pkg giving me the Icon for the game, then I move the contents of the copy the game on the usb drive into the game directory of the ps3 but not replacing the Eboot file. But yes copy game to ps3 from PC using ftp if you downloaded your game. Its better with ftp because you have more access to your drives than a file manager.

Something I have not done yet, but I think I read somewhere about the game Roms having to be in the right place or in the path of where the Eboot is looking. Sorry this may not help but I think your Roms are in the wrong place.

First thing I would like to THANK everyone here for the info that I have read
and was wondering if this looks correct...any input would be appreciated.

I just had the chance to purchase a Sony 55 inch lcd led tv with 3d built into
it and it came with a new ps3 with it...the fw is 3.55
This is what I want to do but before I continue I would like to know if it
      looks right...

      1. I downloaded GEOHOTS CFW

      2. Install the cfw using Pirate's tutorial...http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php...390#post150390

      3. I need a ftp app and ftp client I choose blackbox for the ftp app and
filezilla for the ftp client and to set these up damanptyltd has a setup guide..http://psgroove.com/showthread.php?5...ast-and-Secure

      4. Now there is a way to patch the
main executable file (EBOOT.BIN) and making the PS3 think it's a PSN game.
there is a guide on how to do that at...http://psgroove.com/content.php?635-...55-Geohot-CFW&

      5. I understand that you need the full game iso to make this work and once you have the full game on your computer
you dont need the original eboot.bin because you will be using step 4 to obtain the patched eboot.bin or download a patched one
      from the net.

      6. Once you have the original game on your computer and the original eboot.bin removed can
you just put the patced version of the eboot.bin with the files to upload to the ps3 using
the ftp program and if so once the game is on your ps3 you should be able to just
play it....does this sound right to everyone so far?

This is my first post and I know Im a noob but does this look like it should work???

This maybe your 1st post bud, and fair-play to you m8 you have done some research unlike a lot of peeps on here, yes bud you are right on your thinking. You don't look like a noob to me bud.

yes you can. Ftping gives you full access to all drives mem sticks bdvd usb, with full root access which is better me thinks, unlike Multiman and Comgenie. great prog,s tho.

Just a thought, if i decrypt the EBOOT.BIN, then re-encrypt it again with make_self_npdrm, place it back in USERDIR, and then burn the whole thing on a Blu-Ray disk, would that not work? seeing as the signatures are there.

With Castlvania, since the patched package is floating around the web, all you need to do is :

      1. Install an ftp homebrew (blackbox) on your Geohot CFW ps3 (3.55) - put the ftp homebrew .pkg file in the root folder of your usb stick, insert it to your PS3, go to Game > Install Package and install the ftp..

      2. Copy the patched Castlevania .pkg file to the root of your usb memory stick, and install it just like the ftp homebrew.

      3. Start the FTP homebrew, make sure your ps3 is connected to your PC with an ethernet cable, router or wirelessly, and make sure to note what your ps3's ip address is (it is shown in blackbox main screen).

      4. On your PC, you need to have the actual whole Castlevania game folder (~12gb).
Inside it, there is a USRDIR folder. Delete the EBOOT.BIN file that is there.

      5. Using an ftp client like Filezilla (still on your PC), connect to your ps3, for example : server 10.0.0.1 without any username or password.
You will see the ps3's file structure. Go into game > BLES01047 > USRDIR.
Now copy the *entire* USRDIR folder from your Castlevania folder on your PC to that folder on the ps3. So in the end you should have on your ps3 this structure > \game\BLES01047\USRDIR\<all the content of the USRDIR folder form your pc>

      6. Start the game from the ps3 Game menu

As long as the Eboot points to the right place ie:bdvd not internal/drive I don't see why not. .

I followed this off of psx-scene *this is not my tut but was posted by Hazado on psx-scene.com* http://psx-scene.com/forums/666609-post1853.html I have made two pkg that have worked so far, family game night and mlb2k10.

My Tutorial for setting up and editing eboots to work discless and non-JB. I am on 3.41 still.

      Tools you need
      Cygwin (For Windows) - http://cygwin.com/setup.exe
      PS3 Tools Compiled + Keys - ps3tools.7z
psn_package_npdrm - Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!

Also need an FTP client or a way of moving the eboots and game files you have around on your PS3.

Ive got windows so im writing this for windows. Linux people you should be savvy enough to figure out what you need from this.

      1. Download and do a default install of cygwin.
      2. Start cygwin up once, then close it. (Creates the file structure you need for the next part)
      3. Download and extract ps3tools.7z. Go to the folder you extracted and take every file except the folder .ps3 and put it in you c:/cygwin/bin/ folder (Assuming you did a default install, this is where the cygwin folder should be). Take the folder .ps3 and put it inside c:/cygwin/home/(Your Username Here)/
      4. Download and extract the psn_package_npdrm.exe file to the same place.
      5. Okay open up cygwin again.

      6. Take an eboot.bin file you want to modify and put it inside the folder c:/cygwin/home/(Your Username Here)/.
      7. Type unself eboot.bin eboot_modified.elf (You can call the .elf file whatever you want)
      8. Open up your eboot_modified.elf inside a hex editor (I used HxD)
      9. **Important** Any modifications you do cant change the file size of the elf. Okay go into your elf and change the dev_bdvd to dev_hdd0. This is where it takes some imagination. By changing the dev_bdvd to dev_hdd0, its going to look at the dev_hdd0 path (Your Ps3 Hard-drive) for the files. That means if it says /dev_bdvd/PS3_GAME/USRDIR/ when you change it to /dev_hdd0/PS3_GAME/USRDIR/ it will look at that place for the files it needs. So if they arnt there it wont work. Also if you add/subtract to the elf here, you will get the error 80010007 when you start up your game. Your just looking to do an exact replacement.

Example time - I just got FF13 to work for me, i changed the path from /dev_bdvd/PS3_GAME/ to /dev_hdd0/FF13GAME/. I then went and created the folder FF13GAME inside my dev_hdd0 on my PS3 and put all the appropriate files in there (For FF13 you just need the /USRDIR/white_data/ Folder.) I will post the pkg file I made in the next post.

      10. Okay save your elf file with the modifications you made.
      11. Type "make_self_npdrm.exe eboot.elf EBOOT.BIN UP0001-xxxxyyyyy_00-0000111122223333" (Without the quotes and the xxxxyyyyy being the game ID for your backup)
      12. You now have your eboot.bin file you need.
      13. Now you need to make your pkg file folder structure and associated files. First create a file called xxxxyyyyy.conf and place this inside it. (Where xxxxyyyyy is put your game id)

      Code:
      Content-ID = UP0001-xxxxyyyyy_00-0000111122223333
      k_licensee = 0x00000000000000000000000000000000
      DRM_Type = Free
      Content_Type = Game_Exec
      PackageVersion = 01.00
      14. Next create a folder called xxxxyyyyy and copy these files and folders into it.

      Code:
      TROPDIR Folder
Everything the files (Not the folders) from the PS3_GAME folder for your game
Make a USRDIR folder and put the modified EBOOT.BIN you made at step 11 into it.
      15. Open your param.sfo file inside your hex editor or sfo editor (I like this one PS3Tools.com) and change DG to HG. (DG = Disc Game, HG = Hard Drive Game)
      16. Back to cygwin and type psn_package_npdrm xxxxyyyyy.conf xxxxyyyyy
      17. You should now have a package file if you did everything correctly.
      18. (3.55 Only) now type package_finalize.exe UP0001-xxxxyyyyy_01-0000111122223333.pkg
      19. Copy the package file to a USB drive and go install it on your PS3.
      20. Start up your ftp program and create or move the USRDIR files (Minus the eboot) to the directory you pointed at inside your modified eboot.

Hope this helps people...took me all day to figure this out. (Im kinda slow sometimes too)

You can do all that or... you can use this newly signed Multiman that supposedly works (Haven't tried it myself yet).

The only problem is that I'm unsure that if it's either talking about the app itself working, or if its actually talking about the backups actually loading.

nope, not until ps3 can support ntfs which does not seem like will happen anytime soon, currently external is limited to fat32 format only. you will have to use other methods such as ftp in order to get backups to work on your internal drive.

Why don't the devs just make a PS3 app like backup manager but instead of using peek and poke with level 1 and 2, why not just have it do the method thats working for Geohot's CFW? That it will do ALL the work for you and place the correct files where they need to be and have it make the necessary modifications to have it running, rather than just creating GUI's to do it.

Ohh and if they do have something like this already, please give me link, thanks
