A developer by the name of Wutangrza has released his CFW files that recreate the process that allows peeking and poking which flukes1 has shared with us earlier. Now its only a matter of time before we see modified backup managers like open manager, multiman working with this cfw.

Download: Official FW 3.55

Download: Wutangrza-3.55.tar.gz

Download: bsdiff4.3-win32.zip

Steps for Patching 3.55 Official Firmware on Windows by PSGroove.com

Step 1

Download the above files and extract them all into the same folder

Step 2

Open a command prompt, navigate to the folder where you extracted the above files, then type:
Code:

bspatch PS3UPDAT.PUP PS3CFW.PUP Wutangrza-3.55.patch

Step 3

Delete PS3UPDAT.PUP

Step 4

Rename PS3CFW.PUP to PS3UPDAT.PUP and thats it! You now have an official 3.55 with lv1/lv2 peek and poke enabled

You’re now ready to install the PUP, make sure your console has 3.55 official firmware installed, prior to flashing the peek and poke enabled version. You will need to install it from the recovery menu.

Also, after flashing the 3.55 peek and poke enabled CFW, you can then install Geohot’s CFW. You will still retain lv1/lv2 peek and poke.

Your patched PUP should have the MD5/SHA1 listed below:

MD5: 05933bb7a89bee87b0aa45c74f980e81
SHA1: 3d51501014ab46131a539e1664476e10fa9b611e

Update 3:

Fix for bricked consoles can be found HERE.

**Please check below to updates to this story and solutions on bricking information**

As we commented earlier there was a rumour about Waninkoko releasing his CFW, well it’s not longer a rumour. The famous wii spanish hacker has published his own 3.55 CFW.

What makes this CFW special is that he found the way to enable peek and poke, which means that running backups and the use of backup managers is as easy as it was with a dongle in 3.41

This custom firmware has been made with his own tools, according to him he has tested and is working fine.

Download:http://twitter.com/#!/hackinblack

A word Of Warning, several users have reported of bricks (ON FAT AND SLIM MODELS) , if you have GeoHots CFW, reinstall OFW via recovery, this may alleviate any problems. But there are reports that it works on BOTH models so proceed at your own risk.

To quote readme:

+—————————+
PS3 Custom Firmware v3.55
developed by Waninkoko
+—————————+
www.teknoconsolas.es
+—————————+

>> DESCRIPTION:

This Custom Firmware for the PS3 increases the system features of your console to
allow the installation and execution of homebrew applications.
This Custom Firmware could allow too the loading of legal copies (backups) using
these new included features.

We don’t support and condone the usage of illegal copies.
We are not responsible for any damage for the usage of this Custom Firmware.

>> INSTALLATION:

1. Download PS3 Firmware 3.55 (PS3UPDAT.PUP file).
2. Patch PS3UPDAT.PUP file with the patch included in this package using the “bsdiff” tool (http://www.daemonology.net/bsdiff).
3. Install the patched PUP file like a normal firmware update.
(in case you’re already in 3.55 you need to install it in recovery mode).

>> KUDOS:

- Team fail0verflow
- KaKaRoTo
- flukes1
- Hermes
- jgade

UPDATE 1:

There will most likely be tons of updates so please keep checking back to see the latest. First off here is a tutorial on how to install this and a video of it in action (by PSGroove.com)

1. Upgrade to OFW 3.55 (download FW here)
2. Download the above files and extract them all into the same folder
3. Open a command prompt, navigate to the folder where you extracted the above files, then type:
bspatch PS3UPDAT.PUP PS3CFW.PUP CFW_v3.55.patch
4. Delete PS3UPDAT.PUP
5. Rename PS3CFW.PUP to PS3UPDAT.PUP and that’s it! You’re ready to install Waninkoko’s custom firmware.

• PUP SHA1: 771e0f2431f15c7edd323899fbab810f32e35aba
• IMPORTANT: Check the hash of the created PUP file before flashing.
• I recommend updating first to OFW 3.55, then to CFW 3.55. I’m sorry for all the consoles that have dies, this was unexpected
• At least some people report that it works! That’s good news.
• Working in an alternative way, with no brick riskNo ETA.

UPDATE 2

More updates, according to reports and posts made by our members it seems that if your PS3 has the 256MB NAND (mainly the old 60gb/20gb PS3 models) this CFW will NOT work, and it will brick your PS3.

haleskinn has posted the correct models with the NANDs, so please CHECK YOUR PS3 model before trying to install this CFW. So if your PS3 models is in pink do not install this CFW.

• FAT NAND SIZE
• CECHA = 256MB
• CECHB = 256MB
• CECHC = 256MB
• CECHE = 256MB

• SLIM NAND SIZE
• CECH-20..A = 16MB
• CECH-20..B = 16MB
• CECH-21..A = 16MB
• CECH-21..B = 16MB
• CECH-250.A = 16MB
• CECH-250.B = 16MB
• CECH-250.A = 16MB
• CECH-250.B = 16MB
• CECH-251.A = 16MB
• CECH-251.B = 16MB

This is also a quick tutorial posted by ThaKilla to get backup manager + Waninkoko CFW – remeber that you can’t install the BM on Waninkoko so you have to install the SIGNED version (download here) with Geohots version.

How to install BACKUP MANAGER + Waninkoko CFW:

- Update to OFW 3.55
- Install GeoHot Jailbreak
- Install newest multiMAN
- Update to OFW 3.55
- Update to CFW

Ok after the stupid mess up with this thread, i thought i would set the record straight, it does indeed appear that Waninkoko is due to release a CFW, today Monday 17th of January at 12:00 (GMT+1), here is a quote from Mojo a member at PSX Scene and a possible tester:

EOL, and other spanish webs. It’s a CFW, Multiman works perfectly(or so it says waninkoko). He will release it tomorrow, at 12:00 (GMT+1), because he has to do certain things first.

Im deeply sorry for everyone who wanted the CFW right now. Its no that the CFW its not working, actually it works pretty good, its more of a logistic problem, we thought launching it tomorrow so the release includes a proper readme.txt and a XML of FW License like its supposed to be, and as a matter of fact some of us got to work, and others have school. I know a lot of you will not understand but it is like that and Im sorry for everyone that could feel bad about this news and about the circumstance but thats the path we’ve taken.

So anyone who need to take a break do it now because tomorrow the Waninkoko CFW will be released. (12:00pm Spain Time, aprox. 5:00am. GMT-6)

As many of you already know, flukes1 has been working on complete access to LVL1 and LVL2, recently he wrote this on his blog:

PS3

As you may know if you’ve been following my progress, last week I took a short break from Wi-Fi Sync to look at the PS3 and how it works behind the scenes. The PS3 homebrew scene is currently at a point where you can install userland packages, such as FTPDs and SNES emulators, but you still don’t have any access to the hypervisor or GameOS kernel. It’s still very much a closed system.

As an iPhone developer with an app on Cydia, I can see great potential within the PS3. It’s crying out for a decent package manager, but you need OS-level access to do that effectively. Unlocking the PS3 in this way has other benefits too; the system can effectively be modified in any way you wish.

So today I’m releasing three tools which open the PS3’s hypervisor (lv1) and GameOS (lv2) to full read/write access from packaged userland applications. These tools can be used to create and test lv1/lv2 patches in RAM, which negates the risk of bricking your PS3 by flashing it with an incorrectly patched lv1 or lv2 binary. You can also use the tools to create a patched lv1 or lv2 binary, if you wish, although I suggest thoroughly testing your patches in-memory first.

I will a few things clear before continuing: I do not condone piracy and these tools DO NOT enable copied games to run on the PS3. Again: these tools will not allow backup managers to suddenly start working on firmware 3.55. The tools are packaged in source code form and do not include any Sony code or other Sony assets such as encryption keys. If you’re not a developer, these tools will be useless to you, so please do not try to use them. They are made available with no implied warranty of fitness for a particular purpose.

Three tools are being made available today:

• resign_self.py. This allows you to automatically replace any segment within a self and re-sign the self so the signatures and hashes are all valid again. Similar to makeself, but it is more suited towards patching lv1 and lv2 (and has been tested for this purpose).
• insert_lv1_lv2.py. This is just a convenience script I made to take a modified, re-signed lv1.self and lv2_kernel.self, and automatically create a PUP which is identical to an original PUP except for those two files.
• lv1dumper. This is an application which runs on the PS3 that you can compile and package using PSL1GHT and geohot’s tools. After running it, lv1 will be mapped at 0×8000000014000000 with read/write access, and you will be able to poke lv2 without the system shutting down. It disables the new lv2 memory hashing feature Sony added to 3.55 (probably to stop future USB jailbreaks).

lv1dumper requires that some patches to lv1 and lv2 are already in place. I’ll describe how to add these patches. They have been tested but I cannot guarantee that they won’t brick your PS3. Do not do this unless you’re comfortable with that.

Firstly, you need to extract the decrypted code segments from lv1.self and lv2_kernel.self (just use unself and copy them directly out of the ELF), and make the following changes to to them, assuming you’re using 3.55:

• lv1_undocumented_function_114 in lv1 must be patched so that it can be used to map any area of real memory. graf_chokolo found this trick months ago, but it still applies here. Patch the byte at D5A47 from 00 to 01.
• You then need to add peek and poke to lv2. Patch 1933C to E8 63 00 00 60 00 00 00 and 19348 to F8 83 00 00 60 00 00 00.

You can then use resign_self.py to re-insert your patched code segment back into the self. You’ll firstly need to change a few bytes in some useless strings because of the way zlib deflate works; the script will tell you what to do. I found that changing strings was the easiest way to do this, it just takes a bit of trial and error.

Finally, use insert_lv1_lv2.py to create your modified PUP. You’ll need to update to the PUP, then install geohot’s jailbreak PUP over the top of it. If you’ve done everything right, lv1dumper should just exit after you run it and you’ll have r/w access to lv1 and lv2 (peek and poke). The lv1_peek, lv1_poke, lv2_peek and lv2_poke functions in lv1dumper show how to use that access.

I’m hoping that some interesting and innovative stuff can come out of this, and maybe we can start to see ‘unofficial’ apps enjoying the same success on the PS3 that they do on the iPhone.

PS3Hax member d0zs has created another simple PKG tool that will decrypt your eboot, modify it, and pkg it all with a drag and a click. Includes feature as a firmware spoofer (changes both eboot and param), dev_hdd0/dev_usb001 and directory changer.

To quote:

Version 1.0

i tried making this as simple as possible, here’s how it works:

1) Install cygwin w/ default options (if you already have it, skip this step)
2) Copy the game’s files and create a folder structure like this (Don’t copy USRDIR’s contents except EBOOT.BIN):

BLES01031 <---THE ROOT FOLDER MUST BE VALID GAMEID
-PARAM.SFO
-ICON0.PNG & any other files residing in this folder
USRDIR
--EBOOT.BIN
TROPDIR

that's just the bare minimum, include any other files you want in the pkg

3) Drag the game folder icon (BLES01031 in the example above) to d0zspatcher.exe's icon

that's it. change any settings you want in the GUI and press start.

Update
dobosz has updated his program to 1.1.0.1, here are the changes:
- Fix cygwin (unself) wrong folder crash. Should do the trick for most unself bugs.
- Add check if Game Folder contains space, which can’t be handle by make_self_npdrm.

PS3HaX member dobosz has created quite a handy application, it turns your PS3 game backups into PKG’s, here is a quote from the original thread:

Raw Games Installer is a simple application which was made to help you with patching and building PS3 backup packages.
I don’t claim metods or keys usesed in this application.
This is a simple wrapper between you and hackers software.
Application use code developed by GeoHot, Team Fail0verFlow, and DeLiGhT.
Orginal programs can be found in “dependence” folder.

The press release is out for Geohot’s lawsuit, by his HPLawgroup, promising to fight Sony in this case. To quote:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
January 14, 2011

Law Firms defend Sony’s Accusations against George Hotz

San Francisco, California – Today, attorneys Stewart Kellar and Yasha Heidari announced they intend to vigorously defend the baseless accusations asserted by Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC (“Sony”) against Mr. George Hotz.

“Make no mistake,” Stewart Kellar, intellectual property attorney and e-ttorney at law™ stated, “this case is not about Sony attempting to protect its intellectual property or otherwise seek bona fide relief from the court. Rather, it’s an attempt from Sony to send a message that any individual using Sony hardware in a way Sony does not deem appropriate will result in harsh legal consequences from a multi-billion dollar company, irrespective of any legal basis or authority for such action.”

Sony recently filed suit against a number of individuals, including Mr. Hotz, a 21-year-old computer prodigy who is well-known for his accomplishments and innovations in the field of phone and computer development, such as for creating the ability to provide for iPhone interoperability between various cellular network carriers. Citing unfounded concerns and a dubious legal basis for jurisdiction, Sony seeks relief from the Court due to Mr. Hotz re-enabling core functionality of the Playstation 3.

“I think it is quite telling that Sony, who is legally required to provide notice to Mr. Hotz before seeking any special relief with the Court, decided to e-mail Mr. Hotz a copy of their motion at 7 p.m. when a hearing was scheduled for the next morning at 9 a.m. in California, while Mr. Hotz does not even live in California. Sony is seeking various unreasonable relief, such as seizing Mr. Hotz’s personal property and computers. Luckily, the Court postponed the hearing,” said Yasha Heidari, Esq., managing partner at Heidari Power Law Group, LLC.

Mr. Kellar added, “This case not only has profound implications for the parties involved, but it also implicates core property rights for every consumer out there.” Recently in April of 2010, citing the fact that the Playstation 3′s terms and conditions reserve the right to modify the PS3′s settings and features, Sony inexplicably issued an “upgrade” that removes the end user’s ability to utilize the PS3′s OtherOS functionality. Consumer familiar with the PS3 know that OtherOS is a powerful tool that is critical in allowing its users to utilize the PS3 as a personal computer. Sony had previously touted the PS3′s OtherOS as a major selling point and feature that would receive Sony’s continued support. Yet, despite this, Sony took the position that consumers must either choose to upgrade the PS3 to play newer game titles and lose OtherOS support, or ignore the update to keep OtherOS but be prohibited from playing newer titles.

Mr. Heidari stated, “While most companies issue firmware upgrades to increase a product’s abilities over its life cycle, Sony has taken the unacceptable and draconian approach of decreasing the PS3′s capabilities by actually destroying a core feature of the PS3. Imagine taking in your car for an oil change and having the manufacturer remove your car’s air conditioner, radio, and half its horsepower because of fears that other hypothetical individuals might abuse their vehicles. It just doesn’t make any sense, and it’s a slap in the face to the consumers that put their support behind the product.” Mr. Kellar proclaimed, “This case rests on Sony’s misguided belief that it has the unfettered ability to control how consumers use the products they legitimately purchase.”

Both attorneys agree that Sony’s interpretation of the law is quite troubling. The attorneys state they hope the judge will deny Sony’s motion, but regardless of how the judge rules, they fully intend to defend Mr. Hotz in this action, which has wide-spread implications for consumers globally.

Genesis Plus has now been updated to 1.2

GenesisPlus GX v1.2 for PS3 Changelog:

* Fixed the sound

* Updated the Genesis Plus GX codebase to the latest version

* Many more games with special mappers work (Super Street Fighter II and Mulan to name but two)

* Revamped UI – inline with SNES9x/FCEU and so on

* Configurable controls

* Ability to set SRAM/savestate/directory path

* 1.92+ / 3.55 CFW version in addition to 3.41

*source http://www.emucr.com/2011/01/genesis…2-for-ps3.html

Ive been playing around with it a little and its completely revamped to match the Snes 9x emu.

The sound is perfect not a single pop, or skip. :D

The picture quallity has improved even on stock it looks awesome. (i was playing on 1920×1080, and the last rev didnt look this good)

I am yet to test the other filters also.

Anonymous has added

Game Genie rom path -Game Genie Codes

Action Replay – Action Replay Codes (same as GGC but they can out side areas of hex that Game Genie Cannot access)

Extra Cartridge – For Lock On Carts

S&K Mem Rom – Lock On functionaillity

BIOS Path – for added compatiblity.

I tried a ROM that didnt work in the previous rev, but works now. So i assume he has updated compatibility.

The downside is that the SRAM doesnt save, well it does, but it fails to read, so you can not save your game to the console which is a let down. (this is a must fix in my book)

Other cosmetic changes are background is now a forest, slightly anime-ish.
The icon has changed to “Sega Megadrive” Also the title now reads Genesis Plus GX PS3 as opposed to “Genesis Plus”

All in all awesome job

UPDATED: 1/14/2011

I have just released v 2.1 which now has a easy jailbreaker in it so with this app you can jailbreak your 3.55 PS3 and install homebrew.

We are leaving out backup managers because they are getting updated by the hour and everyone has a different setup. In the future we may add the 3 or 4 most popular but for not now. Please stay tuned for further updates.

How to get:

Use the QR code below or search the Android Market for PS3 Brew or PS3 Homebrew
Select the PS3 Brew app and choose install

How to use:

Start app from the PS3 Brew icon in your applications. select what you want to download and click “Download to SD” give it a few minutes and your file will be ready for install on the PS3. You can also delete the file off of the SD card with “Delete from SD”.

We knew it would happen. Geohot released on his blog the PS3 “root key” and various tools to run homebrew on the PS3. Geohot posted on his blog the following:

As of 1/11/2011 7:20 PM EST, I have been served with papers, see below…

Motion For TRO
Proposed Order

old front page, with relevant info removed, is here

contact me geohot … gmail

You can download the court papers here (an interesting read):

Fail0verflow is also stuck in the mess, here is some responses from the team:

From Fail0verflow’s Twitter http://twitter.com/#!/fail0…
“Looks like Sony decided to ignore the facts and sue us all for it. See http://geohot.com/”

From Hector Martin’s Twitter
http://twitter.com/#!/marca…
“Ah, so Sony decided to sue everyone under US law. Guess I won’t be visiting the US in a while…”

From Muscle Nerd’s Twitter
http://twitter.com/#!/Muscl…
“EFF has done a fantastic job keeping iPhone jailbreaks (not piracy!) legal..hope they can do the same with this PS3 news”

List of charges:

• Confidential Information On Computer
• Intent To Defraud And Obtain Value
• Knowing Transmission of Code
• Intentional and Reckless Damage And Loss
• Trafficking in Password
• Intent to Extort

Seems like Sony isn’t planning going down without some payback first. What are your thoughts about this? What do you think will be the outcome of this case? Let us know by replying below

UPDATE:

According to PSGroove, Geohot response is now available, you can view the response HERE. The response basically defends Geohot and claims that Sony’s actions are not justified against Geohot. Furthermore you can also see refiled documents by Sony outlining tactics similar to the PSJailbreak lawsuit (view HERE).

UPDATE 2:

Sony failed in attempts to get a restraining order on Geohot, to quote @ Geohots Blog: “ As of 2:00 PM EST, 1/14/2011, I am not subject to any TROs

Update 3:

Clarification from readers over at Engadget of the judge ruling, to quote:

Update: Looks like we jumped the gun and got the story a little wrong, but thanks to our readers we’ve discovered that the judge declined to rule on the TRO. Instead she tabled the TRO issue because she was not satisfied that the Northern District of California has jurisdiction to rule on the matter because Geohot hacked the PS3 in New Jersey.

A lot of people are modifying their eboot.bin’s, it isn’t the hardest thing to do, but some people are having problems doing this, just recently michalss has released a tool, that makes the process very easy, here is a quote from the dev:

1. Get your DECRYPTED EBOOT.BIN (tut HERE)
2. Put game ID to game ID field
3. Browse for needed files (there is no check so be sure u selected all)
4. Slect the Game folder and disk drive (8 chars only, hdd0 it should be)
5. Select the FW version
6. Click on EXECUTE
7. Watch how all it is done for you

Note: Path to game in the PS3 it is always: “dev_[selected drive]/[folderGameName]/USRDIR”

Future Features:

* fix some bugs we gonna find
* complete procedure

Please test it as I never did it properly and post feedback!

As we posted here earlier, Sony are taking GeoHot to court over his part in hacking the PS3, we didn’t really know GeoHots side of things, well here is a video thanks to ffffurage on IRC, of GeoHot speaking live to G4 tonight:
