• PSP Hacks , 27.01.2011

Most of the PS3 owners are also PSP owners and over at the Sony Tokyo Event the long awaited and anticipated PSP2, codenamed NGP (next gen portable) has arrived. To quote the specs:

Specs include a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, 5-inch touchscreen OLED display with 960 x 544 resolution, dual analog sticks (not nubs as on the current generation), 3G, WiFi, GPS, a rear-mounted touchpad, the same accelerometer / gyroscope motion sensing as in the PlayStation Move, an electronic compass, and cameras on both the front and back.

The games are now under a new unknown storage media (not UMD anymore). It is indeed very powerful compared to the previous PSP models. During the press confrence they even showed a cutscene from Metal Gear Solid 4 rendered on the NGP @ ~20FPS (not bad at all for portable device).

The best part is that the device is available this holiday season (price not known).

There were tons of games, such as Killzone, Uncharted, LBP demoed you can head over at Engadet to see all the screens.

Looks like another virgin device waiting for hackers who just can’t wait to get their hands on it :) What do you guys think of the NGP? Let us know via comments below.

This isn't the PSP Phone. I watched the live blog with pics, the thing has dual touch screens. One the OLED on the front, the second on the Rear and is the entire size of the OLED screen so that you can "pinch" and move objects on your screen... The control is absolute sick, 360 full axis controller that interfaces with in and out game cameras. It's gonna be worth getting, its too bad they didn't announce a price point. However, this Xmas is gonna be something to look forward too.

Is it in hd or just high quality? Either way the specs are badass! Finally, 2 analogs! 3g, 2 analogs, touch screen, cameras back and front.... sounds like a dream come true.

The design isn't all that great but I don't really care if a portable system has really good specs like that! :D

Looking forward to buying this thousand dollar psp, lol.

For some reason I'm really not all that impressed. I think the design borrows alot from the iPhone 4 especially the edges, volume and power buttons. I also think it looks outdated. The joystick nobs seem bigger than I'd like them to be... I feel that the front fascia needs to be more flush. It would be nice to have a slide qwerty keypad for quick text.

I know that there are some significant hardware upgrades.
      All in All I guess I was expecting more of a tablet/gaming device....not a refreshed PSP1000.

I seriously thought that the PSP2 would be well beyond the reach of the 3DS but after watching the videos on Engadget I think there's little for Nintendo to worry about. In the end it's all about who can deliver the software.

i really don't understand sony. why the hell don't they add those ****ing L2 and R2 buttons? the psp2 got bigger anyway, so where's the problem?
and i also don't think that they have R3 and L3 buttons.
not gonna buy it, until it gets cheaper and jailbroken. tired of supporting sony.

No L2/R2 buttons is not the end of the world. The thing can implement a virtual keypad of the PS console controller. The entire device is a full blown controller of some sorts. To be exact in a shortest description possible, its a full 6 axis motion/touch virtual reality controller. It can drag, drop, pinch, push, pull in-game objects and more. The gyroscope front/rear cameras makes it so that the in-game camera *whatever game your in* turns in real-time when you turn the device itself.

      Bottom line,

Sony needed to impress the world with something innovative and new; they did just that. They did the very thing needed to be done to say F U to MS, Apple and Nintendo. By incorporating it with Droid, the PSN network now tied in to Droid phones; it slaps their competition right in the face.

I not a Sony fanboy, it may seem how I praise the device I may as well be, but i seriously think this is the hottest thing to watch out for come 2012. I say that cause I don't think its gonna be ready for 2011

Im Getting it when it comes out...no matter what the price is ^_^

but im a little dissappointed in the design...nothing really new in the design...looks the same but with a new stick and cameras

BUT THE NEW FEATURES!!!!!!!!!!!! This thing is flat out amazing. All that it can do is just crazy. Im soooooo ready for this thing. Like I said IDC about the price...well unless if its like 500 I'm hoping maybe 250 300. So lets cross our fingers

The specs sound very promising. But looking at the videos I am not impressed at all. I am not a fanboy of any console. I always purchase every cones ( as I will with 3DS and PSP2), but Sony always does the same thing over and over. They focus on making the most powerful consoles or hand held devices. PSP was almost the same thing as the PS2 and now the PSP2 is looking like a portable PS3. They need to come out with something new. Even if PSX or XBOX fanboys mock on the Wii and the 3DS, Nintendo has always gone a different direction which to me makes it more appealing to their fans. As I stated above I will purchase a 3DS and a PSP 2, maybe not at launch but sometime down the road. Sony needs to impress us in a different way. I dont care what anybody says, I feel like Sony took a step back. Sony has way more potential than what they are coming out with. I am not going to start a fanboy argument. I like every system and own pretty much every one.

      @jazneo

it has to have a memory card slot, how else will it store music, video and stuff, there is no way it has enough internal disk space unless it has like a 32gb harddrive or something. just my guess.

So a quad-core CPU and GPU. That spells for some awesome graphics on a portable device.

Sounds like the NGP/PSP2 will come with a car-battery to power this all for more than 6 hours.

Also the "Ability to run Android Titles" sounds nice, even better when they also mean android apps instead just the games for the Xperia Play.

But.. Where the heck is my XMB?

Looks and Sounds like a Terminator type of portable designed to destroy the competition. And why yes it sounds like the Hardware will be more than just top of the line.

But the most important question of all: How deep do my pockets need to be to buy this?? Cause it can't ever be for the price the PSP launched.. This will be way more expensive.

Still they are ushering us in to a new age of portable graphics display which Nintendo is only doing since the PSP came out.

I for one am very happy with Sony even though its just for the soul purpose to bug out Nintendo and compete with them on the Portable market. Which Nintendo took for granted way too easy back in the Gameboy day's.

If you still don't get the point its quite simple:
      Gameboy.
      Gameboy Pocket.
      Gameboy Color.
      Gameboy Advance.
      Gameboy Advance SP.

---- Insert the arrival of the PSP here. ----

      Woosh: Nintendo DS.

All the slow "Innovation" from the gameboy age wiped away with a brand spanking new concept.

And that's one of the many reasons that I hate and love Sony.

The overall design looks okay. I expected a design similiar to the pspgo with the slide up feature. Nintendo didn't really change the overall design for the 3ds, they only added a analog stick. I can't wait for the possibilities of homebrew on the sony NGP:thefinger:

Will the back touchpad be used for control gestures in the game? So it will be like an Apple Mighty Mouse....?

Also, by the time this comes out, 4g networks will have more satellite towers up; they should really make it 4g for serious online gaming use.
