As we commented earlier there was a rumour about Waninkoko releasing his CFW, well it’s not longer a rumour. The famous wii spanish hacker has published his own 3.55 CFW.
What makes this CFW special is that he found the way to enable peek and poke, which means that running backups and the use of backup managers is as easy as it was with a dongle in 3.41
This custom firmware has been made with his own tools, according to him he has tested and is working fine.

A word Of Warning, several users have reported of bricks (ON FAT AND SLIM MODELS) , if you have GeoHots CFW, reinstall OFW via recovery, this may alleviate any problems. But there are reports that it works on BOTH models so proceed at your own risk.

UPDATE 1:
There will most likely be tons of updates so please keep checking back to see the latest. First off here is a tutorial on how to install this and a video of it in action (by PSGroove.com)
- Upgrade to OFW 3.55 (download FW here)
- Download the above files and extract them all into the same folder
- Open a command prompt, navigate to the folder where you extracted the above files, then type:
bspatch PS3UPDAT.PUP PS3CFW.PUP CFW_v3.55.patch - Delete PS3UPDAT.PUP
- Rename PS3CFW.PUP to PS3UPDAT.PUP and that’s it! You’re ready to install Waninkoko’s custom firmware.
Important Twitter Updates:
- Do NOT install in Slim consoles! Looks like users are reporting bricking issues. That’s weird as the CFW was tested on both models.
- Well… I don’t know if those problems are real or just jokes. As I said, some testers tried this and worked in both models.

- IMPORTANT: Check the hash of the created PUP file before flashing.
- I recommend updating first to OFW 3.55, then to CFW 3.55. I’m sorry for all the consoles that have dies, this was unexpected
- At least some people report that it works! That’s good news.
- Working in an alternative way, with no brick risk… No ETA.
UPDATE 2
More updates, according to reports and posts made by our members it seems that if your PS3 has the 256MB NAND (mainly the old 60gb/20gb PS3 models) this CFW will NOT work, and it will brick your PS3.
haleskinn has posted the correct models with the NANDs, so please CHECK YOUR PS3 model before trying to install this CFW. So if your PS3 models is in pink do not install this CFW.

Patching the firmware from windows:
Download everything: official signature patch and bsdiff
We bring in the same folder
We then create a new text file (*. txt) into that folder and type this:
PS3UPDAT.PUP bspatch.exe CFW_PS3UPDAT.PUP CFW_v3.55.patch
Change the extension from. txt to bat.
Double click the bat we just created and ready to start patching

i flashed two Slim´s with the new CFW No Bricks ! Works like a charm!!!
1.) I go to OFW 3.55
2.) I flashed Egohot´s CFW (Otherwise u will not be able to install Multiman!!!)
3.) I flashed back to 3.55 OFW
4.) i flashed Waninkoko´s CFW
I didn´t use the Recovery Menu. I flashed them via XMB
Backups works like a Charme

I'm so glad this did not work for me
I tried 3.41 --> cfw from gameos, after accepting and all it gave an error saying corrupt data.
Then the update came to go from 3.55ofw --> cfw so I update to 3.55 and entered recovery, and then it said "insert device with update 3.56 or higher"
Then downgraded to 3.41 ^^
So i'm happy that i'm not on the brick train

Did you have a game disk in the drive? All the backups i've tried so far works for me. Including the Gran Turismo 5 update 1.05.

Uninstall "old" gamedata, en put the original eboots and param.sfo back in the game folders, is what solves black screen issues often in my case.
Further i have no problem whatsoever, this works great.
PS3 slim 320gb, PAL from 3.41 OFW-->>OFW 3.55-->>CFW waninko.

I have a 60gb launch model ps3
I was tempted to flash this CFW along with all these other n0obs that tried and failed
However after reading the posts on this forum I've decided to stay well clear of this patch
Aint risking my console that cost me £449 aprox $900 at the time where exchange rates wer high (before the recession lol)
If anyone does manage to get this working on a phat launch model please keep me posted but as of this moment in time I have no intention of attempting to flash this somewhat dodgy update via recovery on my console, each failed attempt (of which ive seen numerous) makes me happy I didn't join this group of sheep testers who know own a shiny black paperweight lol

First i flashed to OFW 3.55 From the service mode.
And then i did Geohot Through XMB.
Turned off the PS3 From Back.(Phat)
Turned on....Updated to This CFW From XMB and Worked Perfect!
PS3 Phat 80GB HDD...From Isreal.

just download the offical frimware from anywhere!
copy it to USB Fat32.
copy the PS3UPDATE.PUP File into this path:
X:/PS3/UPDATE<----At this folder u must put in the PUP File.
X=its ur USB.
Turn on ur ps3 and then hold the Turn off button.
Till it beeps 2 times then shut down.
Now turn it on by the ps3(not the controller) hold the button till U hear alot of beeps something like 3-4 in a row!
then leave,Now u are at Service Mode!
Go to "System Update" and from there follow the instructions.....Hope i helped!

Don't bother installing this firmware unless your prepared to risk losing a PS3 for the sake of running a backup manager... There is no brick fix. Waninkoko said he is working on an alternative method with no brick risk, I'd wait until then.

i'm gonna wait and ride out this storm. i don't really need bakcup manager to work as my backups except splatterhouse i got to run and run from the xmb. and i will not risk bricking a $670 console when i have no dongle to recover it from.

From the reports I've read, anything with a 256mb NAND will die, anything with a 16mb NAND will work.
There are only a few reports of bricked slims that I've seen and those did things like updating from 3.41
No guarantees though.

Yup im defo gonna wait it out, im currently on GEO's CFW 3.55 and for the time being fully intend to stay on it. Feel real sorry for the n0obs who flashed their consoles without first waiting to see the possiable outcomes, I'm smiling as my console has a shiny green light and hope it continues to live a happy life playing black ops and GT5.

We all knew from the Wii that Waninkoko's hacks are only half-assed. Every Update on his Wii-IOS broke something, if I remember right he's at the 21th version know and it seems to work as expected. So maybe you guys should better wait for the next 20 Updates of his CFW.

It is possible to get rid of the brick to update wanikoko.
How? ... needed if or if an USB dingle (ps3key, etc ... there are from 11 � in Coupe)
1) Put the console via a USB factory jig
2) We will put in the update root 3.55 (PS3UPDAT.PUP) and also lv2diag of naima.
3) Turn on the ps3 and see what the stick flashes ... let them set up well.
4) There will come a time when the green LED will start blinking ps3 indefinitely, turn off the PS3 and removed the jig.
5) light the ps3, and if everything went well we usually turn on the red box showing us the factory mode.
6) Turn off ps3, remove the state of factory mode, and turn on.

Yeah, this definitely doesn't work as the rlod doesn't start the usb ports, if u hold eject while disconnecting/reconnecting the power the fan turns on full blast and the hdd light turns on, only to rlod again about 10 secs later

people are saying that apparently,certain games can still brick your ps3 after a successful update if they try to access a level 2 syscall.I really think anyone with this installed should go back to 3.41.not sure how true this is but i wouldnt risk it,not worth the hassle for the sake of a day or two.

I saw many reports of bricking in different websites. So personally i would suggest just wait till a list of compatible models come out. Just stick to Geohotz and Eboot thing.

I'm curious. For those with phat models that have bricked, did you use the xmb to put on the cfw? I put on OFW via service mode and tried cfw via xmb but my model or unit (80 gb originally upsized to 500gb) rarely would allow me to update through xmb so I was forced to update cfw through service mode and I wonder if that it the common factor for the bricking issue? Mine is bricked.

firstly , my consoles a pal ps3 slim 120gb and it had flashed fine .
I cant get backup manager to install through the install pkg and get an error but its expected . At least waninkoko is trying to make firmwares and progress the scene . None of you have the knowledge and are all judging to quickly . give him a chance , the wii loaders he made for cios are mint .

I commented on holding the eject button while reconnecting power earlier, if you immediately let go of the eject button when you see the green light and press it again, the blue light also comes on next to the green, maybe it would help people who have discs stuck in there

believe me or not i did this on my slim started from 3.41 never put geohot on or any other cfw i updated my ps3 with ofw 3.55 then with waninkoko update after following the instructions it worked fine booted to ps network and multiman backup work fine even GT5 with original eboot.bin i had a modded one to work on 3.41 but i saved the orginal one replaced and it works fine also the only thing i noticed is that 3.55 pkg dont install but 3.41 does but does not run i get a err but i installed snes signed 3.41 pkg it works so im downloading 3.41 signed pkg homebrew files right now and will up date if it works or not ie.. nes, fbx, vba, fileman, ftp, ect... im deployed now so dl speed is slow

Download this pack and place the containing files in your C:\ directory:

Download the PS3 3.55 OFW and the Waninkoko CFW files and place both the original PS3UPDAT.PUP and the CFW_v3.55.patch files in the C:\ directory.
Run the patcher.bat file and it should create a file named "CFW_PS3UPDAT.PUP" in the C:\ directory. This is your new Waninkoko Custom Firmware.
Now, copy the file "PS3UPDAT.PUP" to your flash drive in the "PS3\UPDATE\" folder. Put the flash drive in the USB slot closest to the disk drive in your PS3. Place your PS3 into recovery mode by:
1. Turn the PS3 off by holding the power button down.
2. Press and hold the power button until the PS3 turns on and back off again.
3. Press and hold the power button until the PS3 makes 2 consecutive beeps, then release it.
4. Follow the on screen prompts to update your PS3 back to OFW 3.55.
After the update has been completed, you will want to reformat your PS3 by using the "Restore PS3" option in the XMB.
Once the reformat is completed you can delete the original update from the flash drive, and then copy the file "CFW_PS3UPDAT.PUP" to your flash drive in the "PS3\UPDATE\" folder. You'll need to rename the file to "PS3UPDAT.PUP" once its on the flash drive. Follow the previous instructions for getting into recovery mode and updating your PS3. This time once the update is complete you will be on Waninkoko CFW 3.55. Enjoy.

from what i've been reading, right now, it's best to stay away from this CFW, the brick seem to be random, though it happens mostly on Phat PS3, though there are cases where slims ps3 also did bricked. So by upgrading this CFW, you're risking a high chance of bricking your ps3. For now just stick to your 3.41jb, or 3.55geo.
AND STAY AS AWAY FROM THIS AS POSSIBLE
just be patience, eventually, some1 will release a stable and fully tested version.
Though I don't condone piracy, I would love it if backup feature would be enabled. Cause I had my bdrive died once on my ps3, and had to spent about 100 dollars fixing it. So I rather play my games on backup to keep the bdrive from dying out again.

After using GeoHot's 3.55 CFW without the ability to boot backups i decided to change to Waninkoko's 3.55 CFW.
(I used the XMB to do all the Update related stuff)
After installing the Sony's OFW i then went ahead and installed Waninkoko's CFW
I had SSF4 already backed up just for testing With GH's CFW
(BTW the BackUp never worked using some of the latest methods for his CFW)
and after installing Waninkoko's CFW i gave Multiman another shot, and guess what? the BackUp worked PERFECTLY.
1.I have a Phat 40gig PS3.
2.I Never, ever, ever used the -Recovery Mode- for anything at all.
3.I never patch Lv2 [Peek&Poke] while i was in GH's CFW.
4.I Uninstalled GH's CFW by nstalling SONY's OFW Before Installing Waninkoko's CFW.
Mission Completed - Everything was a success! (in my end)
Colossal Thanks to all the devs that made this possible.

again from my post on pg 12 every thing works gaia, ftp, gba, genesis, fceu, comgenie, everything but it 3.41 signed pkg files the only problem i have is tring to start games back to back i freezes have to unplug but had the samr problem before anyway. To many people bricking there consoles and not enough success, why are people still carrying on? It is failing on patching Lvl2 by the looks of things, I was going to try this Firmware but after reading all these fails I intend on keeping away. Maybe you should look at

Worked fine on PHAT 160 GB (EU) following this path:
3.41 (ofw) -> 3.55 (ofw) via xmb -> recovery mode -> 3.55 (cfw)
Checked all md5 sums several times, just to be sure and IT WORKS!!!
Read the tutorial, follow every check, double-check md5 and be patient while updating. :-)

For people with discs in their bricks, holding eject while reconnecting power WILL spit your game back out. I tried putting a few games in to see if it would update but it just spits then back out

OFW 3.55 to CFW 3.55, then back to OFW 3.55 using the restore tool. Then used restore again to install CFW 3.55 Waninkoko.
As the install hit 100%, the system shuts down and you only have a constant flashing red light. Pressing power makes it a solid red. Pressing power again turns it green for a second, fan starts, but then light goes yellow for a sec and reverts to flashing red.
Using a 60gb Japanese Fat launch system. CECHA00

I installed it and it worked, but I'm having problems running backups. I made the cfw from the patch and the MD5hash checksum's match. here's my upload, I renamed it so it doesn't get removed as fast or if at all. I'm running a USA 110gb slim console.

Hello if you are posting about yours bricking, or yours working or even asking if yours will work. POST YOUR MODEL NUMBER ! This will massively help and hopefully a pattern can be pieced together if it is not truly random, if yours isnt on the list of ones that do not work DO NOT take this as sure fire that it will work. It is possible that the bricked consoles are the same ones that lose BD-Compability when downgraded.

I think every single 60GB will Brick and those 40/80GB that has 256mb nand on the list.
Other (16mb nand 40/80/160phat) and (slims:all) will brick only if did the update wrong.

There is "If everything else fails" portion, could that help with bricks? It involves getting a hdd with same firmware which one had before the update (original?) and removing bios battery from ps3 for 30 min, so that the update flag would not be present in hdd and in ps3.
I have never taken ps3 apart so I'm a little affraid to do so. If someone cuold try this, who has..?

Ok Mine worked and this is my Info. I have a ps3 fat Model CECHH 40GB and I had geohot jailbreak. I did system recovery and installed OFW 3.55. I said a prayer and installed 3.55 cfw. It worked and I installed multiMAN 01.12.05. (multiMAN ver 1.12.05 BASE [20110113_170000].pkg)
Here is a chart on which one will work, it lookes like anyone with 256mb bricks and 16mb might work

I think there's a way to unbrick the Fat PS3's. Nothing is impossibe, didn't they say that on the fat PSP's and they unbricked it with pandora battery. Maybe it can be done with a programable development board. Don't lose hope where there is a will there is a way.

I heard it is possible to unbrick, just reboot the machine in recovery mode and downgrade back to 3.41 or 3.50.
If you really want to be safe, go buy a new 160GB, try it on that one, if it fails, simply return it.
How to Access Playstation Recovery Menu
1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold The power button down; The system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be promted to plug in your controller via usb and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

Ok CECH A through to CECH G seem to be the problem machines,
it is thought that it is a Nand related issue, all the above being 256 version.
From CECH H onwards the Nand is the 16 version and I can't find any reports of these bricking if the CFW is applied correctly.....
Any that have bricked on CECH H and above seem to have been caused by the patch not being applied correctly and the Hash not checked.....

I cant promise you this info is correct, but it is gathered from other sites who are running comparisons and it seems they all agree machines bricking are using the 256 Nand......

CECHC03 60Gig Phat Bricked. Install crashed at approx 60-65%, black screen flashing red power indicator. When I try to power back on I get green light for 2 sec, 3 beeps then flashing back to red. Will a fix be developed for this, is it possible to fix?

Works Like a charm this is what i've done
1.First I installed Official Firmware 3.55 over Geohots CFW
2.Secondly made Waninkoko CFW via 3.55 Patch
3.Checked MD5 Checksum to match checksum of newly made 3.55 waninkoko

People need to read posts, asking if the ps3 slim will brick if you install CFW has been answered 50+times.
Why people keep trying to install to fat ps3s is really making me wonder if they should be allowed to breed.
Sony is able to fix these systems, there has to be able to force the firmware on the nand or get it to power up.
If anyone wants to sell their now bricked PS3, PM me, I'll pay $50 -$75 +15 for shipping, must include an internal HDD.

Be sure to update to 3.55 OFW first, that may be the problem.
And homebrew doesn't seem to install for me, I've only tried Multiman (from the signed homebrew thread) Ill try some more now.
EDIT: tried a bunch of homebrew from that thread, nothing is installing, did I miss something?

So far all my backups are working on my 160gb Slim!!!

Worked for me.
I had GeoHot 3.55 cfw, then I installed OFW 3.55, and then, through recovery mode, the Waninkoko's one.
I have SLIM 250GB.
Now, please, tell me, where can I find multiman that works fine with it? When I had 3.41 I made a Killzone 2 backup and I still have it... and the disc is broken ;/

Works on my(!) Phat CHECHH04
Steps:
- Update to OFW 3.55
- Patched with CFW using windows version of bsdiff. (Follow link given in CFW patching file)
- Via recovery mode updated patched CFW
- Using multiman, the 3.40-3.42 version!) Somehow the 3.55 does not work for me
- Tried backup of NFSHP, works...

I wouldn't advise anyone to install this CFW. It might work on some slim and phat models but it's more like a beta than a real release So I suggest waiting until Waninkoko releases a brick free CFW confirmed working on your specific CECH model.

I THINK THIS MIGHT HELP NOT SURE BUT COULD BE REASON
Firstly, you need to extract the decrypted code segments from lv1.self and lv2_kernel.self (just use unself and copy them directly out of the ELF), and make the following changes to to them, assuming you’re using 3.55:
* lv1_undocumented_function_114 in lv1 must be patched so that it can be used to map any area of real memory. graf_chokolo found this trick months ago, but it still applies here. Patch the byte at D5A47 from 00 to 01 (2D5A47 if you’re looking for it in IDA).
* You then need to add peek and poke to lv2. Patch 1933C to E8 63 00 00 60 00 00 00 and 19348 to F8 83 00 00 60 00 00 00.
You can then use resign_self.py to re-insert your patched code segment back into the self. You’ll firstly need to change a few bytes in some useless strings because of the way zlib deflate works; the script will tell you what to do. I found that changing strings was the easiest way to do this, it just takes a bit of trial and error.
Finally, use insert_lv1_lv2.py to create your modified PUP. You’ll need to update to the PUP, then install geohot’s jailbreak PUP over the top of it. If you’ve done everything right, lv1dumper should just exit after you run it and you’ll have r/w access to lv1 and lv2 (peek and poke). The lv1_peek, lv1_poke, lv2_peek and lv2_poke functions in lv1dumper show how to use that access.

and thats why people who are using the updates on the 256mb ps3's are bricking .
IF SOMEONE COULD COMPILE IT FROM A 256mb PS3 and test i think that might be the problem.
i dont have 1 of these machines so i cannot test.
just a thought im not a dev or pro but i think this could be the answer

Can confirm, i downloaded patchupdatpup and confirm cfw working. installed ofw 3.55 then installed cfw from main system menu. installed multiman 3.41 signed pkg and changed gt5 eboot to original. wallah games working now to try online lol dont do it from recovery mode, thats why i think the other ones had bricked, my theory

I installed 3.55 OFW than PS-hardisk formatted and Waninkoko CFW installed.
Problems
Homebrew cant run like multimanager ftp Server.
i found (multiMAN ver 1.12.05 BASE [20110113_170000].pkg) it work all functions fine but when run Backup will be Blackscreen !!
I think we need new multiMAN for new ps3 versions.

If you have bricked your console, you've learned a very important lesson : don't play with things you don't understand. While there are quasi-legitimate reasons to flash a console to play backups (broken BD for example) the vast majority of people attempting to install this modified firmware just want free games (you scurvy pirates).
It's your sheer excitement at the prospect of setting up your hive of villainy under your television that has prevented you from exercising patience.
We were all warned by those technically adept individuals that lvl2 modifications in the firmware could be disastrous, specifically because the ps3 requires a working firmware revision to install another. Break that and you break the ability to boot, recovery mode or otherwise. Ergo, Useless dis-functional electronic device = Brick, door-stop, paper-weight.. whatever term you'd like to use (I prefer the term 'Macintosh')
The only way to get the system working again is beyond the scope of any tutorial and if you're the kind of person that bricks hardware by flashing untested FW after you've been warned? you're not the kind of person that could follow such a tutorial.
But wait, hold the phone.. what am I saying? there's one positive in all of this!
There has been a dramatic increase in the number of replacement BD components available.

For those that flashed without issues and lost the bluray ability, i went ahead and installed ofw 3.55 through recovery (from waninkoko 3.55) without any problems and got my movie playback again. Im going to wait until waninkoko's firmware is fixed. Definitely now dont recommend this because of bricks and if it works, there are other issues.

I'm not bad-mouthing the guy, he tried and released a firmware despite all the Sony legal **** thats going down. Ok, it bricked some consoles but he did state install it at your own risk... That being said from his twitter feed, he had four testers but no-one else wanted to test it? Sorry, but who would release firmware being tested by only 4 people... Don't hate but that **** just makes me mad, install at your own risk but why release something that was so poor... 4 testers won't make up for the 400+ people who's PS3's are now ornaments. I'll say it again, props for trying but jeez what about thorough testing?

If such a route were financially viable as well as technically feasible? it would of been an avenue of research for countless mod-chip makers / devs before now.
If someone has the hardware and the knowledge, perhaps they can make some money and some happiness by selling the service.
But given the current state and direction of the scene I can't see any of the capable devs working on this any time soon.
Perhaps in the future with new ps3 hardware revisions aimed at blocking the current breed of jailbreak, there will be a need to go down this path.

Waninkoko did us all a favor and released something many where looking for. all items, software consoles, phones, whatever have bugs in them, specially in the first run, version, etc..... he stated that he did his best and the CFW was working on all of the consoles he tried. hes a solid dev who has done great things in the past, and were lucky hes focusing efforts on the scene. he owned his mistake, something many of the whiners are not doing. most of all, if you are big enough to make the decision to flash your PS3, than you are big enough to be responsible for your own actions.
thats the truth of it, plain and simple. do your homework and have some patients, especially when it comes to things like this. there will most likely be and external fix and the CFW will be ironed out in a day or so.... weve waited this long.

Grow up, just cause people choose to use custom firmware doesn't mean they are pirates. I actually enjoy using emulators, and backing up my legally owned games on my ps3, instead of having to pull my discs and other consoles out of my closet every time i have people over. Plus alot of other people may have had their disc drives break or other circumstances, (ex. My little brother stuffed crap in my wii disc drive when i was away on vacation breaking it + the warranty) so stop acting like a troll and actually try to contribute when people are having problems. For piracy though, anyone who did get bricked trying it for that reason deserved it.

I have successfully installed the custom firmware using the following method:
1. Flashed OFW 3.55
2. Flashed Geohot's custom firmware 3.55
3. Installed latest version of Multiman
4. Flashed OFW 3.55
5. Flashed Waninkoko's custom firmware 3.55
Multiman runs and recognizes my backed up games but will not launch any of them. It will either return me to the main screen or it will just go to a black screen. I am not launching the games directly from Multiman either. I would like to add that I successfully was using Multiman under 3.41 and had tested each backup game before this so I know they work.
What am I missing?

You may already have said what number (on bottom of console CECH***) your PS3 is, but it's more the actual console version than a mismatched PUP that seems to be the main brick problem so make sure yours isn't on the *expected brick list*

(I also tried to install Geohots JB again over OFW and no difference)
No brick but sadly backups are NOT working. So, my advice to all of you who wish to run backups wait a day or two for backup managers to be updated. Cheers.

Ok so I installed the CFW fine on my slim PS3. I installed Multiman afterwards and it runs fine, but I cannot get any FTP server to install nor can I get Comgenies awesome file manager to install even though I'm using the pathed version for 3.55. What am I doing wrong and what is the point of a CFW if I can't install homebrew!?

slim ps3 never checked the model. started with 3.41, upgraded to 3.55 OFW, went into recovery to install GEO 3.55, installed multiman, used XMB to go back to 3.55 OFW, then followed the patching listed above to install Waninkoko from XMB.

Ok... what the hell is wrong with this multiman? I tried with Majin and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. PS3 stucks everytime before game even launches. Everything just stops. Everything worked fine for me, 120GB Slim.
I was on geohot's CFW, flashed back to OFW via system update, then flashed Waninkoko's CFW with the system update from the XMB as there was no need to go into recovery mode.
Installed Rogero Manager since multiman wouldn't load anything.
So far I've tried Infamous, Madden 2011, and AC Brotherhood, all working. I'll try a few more later and see what happens.

1. Get a copy of Sony OFW 3.55. Put this on a USB drive under /PS3/UPDATE
2. I’m assuming you’re using a PS3 Slim. Turn it off. Unplug it just to make sure, then plug it back in.
3. Press and hold down the power button. Keep it pressed down! The PS3 will start, then it will turn itself off.
4. Let go of the power button, then press and hold it down again. The PS3 will beep, and a few seconds later will beep twice rapidly. Let go of the power button now.
5. You’re now in Service Mode. You’ll have to activate your PS3 controller (it has to be plugged in via USB). You’ll have a set of choice – the last choice (I believe number 6) is Update your PS3.
6. Select this. It’ll tell you to press start + select at the same time if you have the PS3 update available. You do because you set this up in Step 1.
7. Follow the directions from there. This will get you back to official 3.55.
As a side note, anything you installed with the Geohot patch *will still be installed and likely still work*. (After all, it’s signed and an “official” PS3 app according to the system).
That’s it! Now if you want to install the Waninkoko pup, follow the same instructions.

CECH20xxA (120GB Slim) Worked for me
All via XMB (not recovery mode):
Installed OFW over GeoHot's => Waninkoko's CFW over OFW
Using multiman 1.12.05 BASE [20110113_170000] FW 3.55 (made for geohot's I think)
Tested working:
Dead Rising 2, Gran Turismo 5, Demon's Souls
Maybe compatibility is the same as on 3.41?
From my experience, you may have to delete any save data or game data first before backup will work.
To run (for those that don't know):
Install game. Load game. It will take you back to the XMB. Launch from "/app_home/PS3_GAME/" or if you have a disc in drive you can launch from there.
Blu-ray playback not working straight from XMB but is working if you load it through multiman and then through XMB.
Have not tested installing packages.
Hope this helps someone.

I'm guessing backup compatibility is the same as with dongles and from everything I've read, this CFW seems to work on all PS3 models with 16MB nand and with the few slims that were reported bricked they probably did something wrong. (maybe with patching the FW?) Just my speculation.
BTW, Dead Rising 2, Demon's Souls, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 2, and LittleBigPlanet all worked for me, though I think LBP required a disc in drive.
All previous (before backup) saves and game data worked.

If you are presented with an update press circle to cancel. Or update and see if it works. if it does NOT work after an update, you will more than likely have to re-rip your backup, or re-ftp it

No, GeoHots CFW is NOT required for this. However, some people insist on doing things the hard way, so instead of doing some trial and error work, and trying pkg's to see if they work, they reflash OFW 3.55, then flash GH CFW, install the signed pkg's that work with his fw, then re-flash Waninkoko's CFW over top of that!

I have an 80GB, 2 USB port phat "K" model, US NTSC, and I can confirm that it is working with absolutely no issues so far. I went from 3.41 to 3.55 OFW, then when geohot's cfw came out I installed it. Just went back to ofw 3.55 and straight to this fw. So far, I'm even able to install packages

Bricking the PS3 is mostly caused for a bad dev_flash when flashing it using Mount Alejandro (or another homebrew application which permanently flashes, unlike JaiCraB USB FiRM Loader) or a bad .PUP, this is a brief tutorial I made for you to fix this – Thanks to MonkeyBoy
1.First of all, download this recovery files. (http://www.mediafire.com/?yhbt501m9hgrh12)
2.Unzip the .zip file and it will show up two folders (Lv2Diag File 1 & Lv2Diag File 2)
3.Put your PS3 on Recovery Mode (it its bricked it will not show you the Recovery Screen, it will just turn off once you click power+eject)
4.Then format a USB and put the following files on the root: Lv2Diag.self (From the File 1 folder) and PS3UPDAT.PUP (Your current firmware)
5.Put the USB on the right USB port of the PS3 (The one closer to the Disc Reader) and turn it on
6.The screen will be black, just wait 10 minutes approximately and the PS3 will turn off it self (If the PS3 doesn’t turn off after 10 minutes, turn it off manually)
7.Turn the PS3 on and you’ll see the Recovery Mode screen, after this erase everything from your USB and put the Lv2Diag.self (From the File 2 folder) on the USB root
8.Turn off the PS3 and put the USB on the right USB port of the PS3 (The one closer to the Disc Reader)
9.Turn your PS3 on and then it will turn off, turn it on again and your PS3 will be unbricked.

Medal of Honor (2010) - Success w/disc
NCAA Football 11 - Success w/disc
Need For Speed Carbon - Success w/disc
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit - Black Screen w/disc (doesn't even make it to XMB)
The Fight: Lights Out - Black Screen w/disc (pink square appears to the bottom right)
Time Crisis: Razing Storm - Black Screen w/disc (doesn't even make it to XMB)
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 - Success w/disc
H.A.W.X - Success w/disc (delete game data first)
Again, this is limited testing. Deleting the existing game data might resolve some of these.
Keep in mind, some of these may have had a modified eboots or sfo that I need to resolve.
Lastly, I tested all titles with a disc and none without. Also, I may have some false results as I was jumping in and out of games.
Finally: Thanks again to all the developers who brought this to us. Whether it be mobile devices or gaming consoles, you guys cease to amaze me.

XMB Video Issue? So far this CFW has worked great as far as my backups go, all work perfectly fine (NHL 11, Fight Night Round 4, Madden 11, and WWE SVR 2011)...but all of a sudden once I tried watching a video from my XMB, the system freezes and has to be shut off/unplugged. Or when I try loading a movie it will freeze. Anyone else having this issue?

Those who have bricked and are checking back here for info, please help thy neighbor and reply with your model number (I've got a slim model, flipped it upside down and found "CECH-251.B", for example). It also wouldn't hurt to tell us what region it was purchased for (NTSC, PAL, etc).
Once we get a real sense of which systems are bricking the better we'll all be as for either unbricking your device or at least determining exactly which ones will brick. Just telling us if it is fat or slim and the HDD size aren't necessarily enough.
(And I haven't even tried it on mine yet, so I don't want to send any signals that 251.B has any issues)

I played a blu ray before and it worked just fine. Only tried it once though. Now the video section has been rendered pretty much useless, seems to freeze every time I try to load something. Maybe the other CFW by Wutang might be worth a try as soon as a backup manager has been signed for it, cause this ones starting to get all buggy.

this is my personal idea, i not have try it, but maybe it works:
The Ps3 should have a Battery inside like (PC's) do, so remove it for 30min. then insert it again. and let's se what happend! On PC this will cause a Bios Reset. On the PS3, we will see.

what is, if the Ethernet Cabel is Connected, while Starting the PS3 Up, Maybe it connects automaticly to a Sony Server!!!! if you try, pleasy try it in different modes, like Recovery, Save or whatever.

brick ps3 as of now can only be revived by NOR FLASHER or any flashing nand..... im also in same situation it really sadden me i acted on this quickly without realizing its a bricker
knowing that also waninkoko is known dev and have made alot of hacks for wii.... and trusted him but fails... i seriously hope that theres a solution to fix lv2 ....any genius would like to help find solution to solve this without taking my ps3 apart

I also mistakely trusted Waninkoko because of his Wii-reputation and because he also claimed it was testet.
I mainly blame myself for not waiting, its the name of the game. But that said, Waninkoko has lost all credibility by releasing this brickware as "tested" and also downplaying the bricked consoles in the beginning instead of issuing a severe warning as soon as the first stories about bricked consoles came in. There is no excuse for that.
My bricked was a old "fat" launch unit I was not using for anything else than homebrew - I also have a PS3 slim which I use for serious gaming and only sign onto PSN with my account with that, so no major disaster for me since I was planning on getting another slim later anyway - to use as emulator-box and dedicated bluray/DVD player. But it's still annoying to see a console bricked because of Waninkoko's sloppy work. Lessons learned for everybody.

Hey all.
Remember this trick back when I first ever laid eyes on ps3, way before my Xbox modding days. It may be of some help to all you bricks out there.
First off, disconnect your now useless HDD (I have a guide on how to do this for something unrelated, however may fix this as well, just search my posts).
Next off, your going to absolutely have a home computer/laptop with sata ports for this to work.
Steps :
1) connect your ps3 hdd to your computer (set it up under bios as slave or configure it to boot after you main internal HDD). This is easy to do with mid range older boards as they usually have sata connections as well as IDE controller connectors. Hopefully, you'll have a spare set of Sata power/HDD hookups inside the case (cross your fingers).
2) Second, your going to need a formatting program that will actually recognize your ps3 HDD. As in it's current state, it's probably garbaged up, don't be perturbed by it showing up as just a giant used space.

there are quite a few that will work, Gparted is excellent and can be booted for everyone that actually doesn't have the ability to hook up both ps3 and computer hdd at once.
3) Inside the program, your going to want to select the ps3 HDD partition and format it, I'd suggest NTFS, although im sure Fat will work fine. It probably again is going to show up as used space instead of unallocated (as it's been flashed by the ps3, and more than likely is in a state of fubar.
4) after formatting the drive, remove it from the PC (please god don't format your PC hard drive instead lawl), remove it, reconnect it to your ps3 casing and insert into your ps3. After doing so, unplug (ps3slim) your power cable completely from the back of the ps3. On the bricks, make sure the power switch on the rear of the housing is completely switched off.
5) power your ps3's back on, and immediately tap the eject three times to put into standy/factory mode. If this doesnt work for you, hold the power button on the ps3 (brick model) until 2 consecutive beeps occur.
6) You should get a screen saying the ps3 HDD is unreadable (we want it to not be), and that you should install via USB a firmware (it will suggest whatever firmware version came on the model originally). Then head over to grab a official firmware from the download section here.
7) Create a folder names PS3, and inside it a folder named UPDATE. this is case sensitive. Your going to want to extract the pup file from the official sony firmware you downloaded into the UPDATE folder.
8) Pop in the usb, and hold select and start to search for it. when prompted, select yes and complete the installation. This should help get some back on track.
Hope it helps.
As the service mode seems to be attached to the hardware, this should help steer around the firmware malfunction's located on the HDD in theory. As some user's probably aren't able to actually hold the power button as many have gotten random errors from this, simply time your ejects immediately after powering on as best you can to hopefully spurt up the factory mode.

The bricked PS3s are bricked because the Sony operating system hangs when it's trying to boot the HDD and the hardware can't make sense out of the changes made to the HDD after the CFW was installed, not because the BIOS won't try to boot.
Unless these CFWs are changing the BIOS (which they may do, to be honest I'm not familiar with how these CFWs actually function), resetting the BIOS wouldn't help.

I don't know much about the internals of the PS3 or how it works, but for something like this my guess is you would need a way to push a flash to the PS3 NAND chip from an outside source seeing as there doesn't seem to be any kind of recovery partition in the PS3 (wondering why nobody has come up with this?).
Whatever the devs are using that's being stuck on the bottom/right side of their PS3 which looks like a self made serial cable would probably be the ticket out of this mess. But know how to obtain/make one and make proper use of it is another question.
Don't take my word for any of this though, it's just a personal theory.
Also I didn't go from GeoHot CFW to SonyOFW via Recovery mode, I just did it normally via XMB. But going from OFW to Waninkoko CFW I used recovery mode. Make sure you have checked your model if that's what you plan on doing!

Whit a serial cable made and soldered to the main board you can get access to the nand whit nandpro.
This should also work on the ps3 whit some modification then first make a dump of your bricked nand(never know if you need some key’s to resemble a donor nand) then compile new nand and just flash it whit nandpro.
As far as I know they already have nand access whit infectus modchip, so mebay a unbrick could be made whit that??

Ok, my PS3 is a Phat 40gb version...CECH J03....Should I risk it or not..
Has anybody else had a brick with this version, I've tried to check, but there's so many posts and not everyone is giving the CECH version...and I read on another forum not to take any notice of the CECH theory...the CFW is bricking all models....its all down to luck....my luck has never been great....
If I was in a marching band, I'd have the piano....!
What do you think do I stand a reasonable chance of success....

I'm currently using the Waninkoko 3.55 on my CECHJ 40GB Phat. I followed instructions and it worked out fine. Seems to be working for others too who are following instructions.

I successfully bricked my CECHC03 60gig Phat yesterday about 30mins after release. Its my own fault I guess should have waited to see outcome before flashing. Non of the unbrick techniques floating around have worked as I assumed, only fix I understand could work is communicating directly with NAND chip and re-flashing with a unique backup? anybody know of a tutorial for this? Also I have noticed the magic gate slot blink twice when I try boot, is it possible to re-flash NAND via this?

I am using Waninkoko but homebrew cannot be installed so I was thinking using now GEOHOT 3.55jb if this would enable them back. Anyone tried this? If I remember I read somewhere that this was possiblle, working and off course kept lvl2 opened from waninkoko CFW from the previous installation.

I feel for the people who have now got themselves a very expensive doorstop, however I also agree with what a few others have said in that at the early stages of releases only experienced and knowledgable people should undertake the "testing" phase ( or even the wealthy lot who can afford a brick or two".
It does seem to an untrained eye like mine that the current set up is not even alllowing a lot of features that most expect such as managers and back up game loading.
I wonder if it a matter of time before the usb jailbreaks are able to take on a role in this as at the moment the set up seems quite complicated with signers and likes whicg are really difficult foe the average person to follow without damaging their systems.

So as I wrote yesterday, my PS3 is bricked.
When I turn it on the power LED is turning yellow and flashing red then. The HDD LED doesn´t do anything and my PS3KEY doesn´t lighting up. But I saw that the control light of the card reader is flashing twice before the power LED starts flashing red. So can there be a solution? Is it possible that someone brings out a, well lets say a MagicMemory Stick for the PS3 which we can repair our bricked PS3´s with?

Okay .... removed the Battery from the Motherboard and waited for 30 Mins . Reassambled all .... formated the Harddrive from PS3 with PC in NTFS .. ! Okay Power button Green Light for 2 seconds then Yellow one second and blinking redlight . I switched it completely of on the mainswitch then while holding down the eject botton turn the main switch on and you see she wants to boot up but no video signal . My 40 GB PS3 is Dead ! CECHG04 must have a 256 mb nand too ! any chance to unbrick this ps3 ??

I remember you could unbrick the iphone and wii...so is it lost forever or are they being over dramatic? Because i'm not going to jump right into this before i know everything. I have a CECHE model. For everybody with a slim thinking about running Waninkoko's CFW. It does work! Just make sure you INSTALL 3.55 OFW FIRST (if running geohot) BEFORE INSTALLING CFW. I've been using Rogero and just select the run with disk in option, and there you go! The only thing that Waninkoko gets thumbs down on is that he stated that it could brick slims when it did the exact opposite. Hopefully he can get that fixed so everybody in this community can enjoy this!

im planning to do ofw 3.41 to geo cfw 3.55(install pkg`s) then wanin 3.55 cfw...all through xmb would this work?

I have a CECHK08 Ps3 80 GB Phat i am currently on 3.41 so should i go ahead with this CFW or wait a little longer oh and i don't have the backward compatible one its the one with 2 USB ports with 16 MB flash so should i go ahead with the update please advise as i dont wanna risk bricking my console thanks

Anyone who is thinking of flashing there ps3 i seriously would give it a miss .....give it a few weeks and i rekon a much more stable cfw will come out ....all this bricking reminds me of psp early days and everyone bricking there psps ....... but look what happened there pandora.!! ......so there is hope ...but when ....along way yet there aint even a good solid safe cfw never mind a resuscitation for your dead babies .....
Give it a miss ....stay on whatever yr on .....myself 3.41 .....and WAIT ............u never know a better one will appear and those who update this might not be able to update to that cfw.......dont kill yr baby let it live ....

Was already on 3.55 just install Geohots jailbreak through xmb normally, install multiman or other backup manager or any other pkg you need.
install ofw 3.55 through xmb normally, then install Wankiko's cfw through xmb normally... Still testing but psn and online multiplayer works. Backedup AC Brotherhood and it plays fine single and multiplayer mode. Worked on 80gb model CECHK01

Installed geohot cfw 3.55 then multiman 1.12.05, then ofw 3.55 and then wanins cfw 3.55 on my slim 120gb cecha 2004....
Running different games on it including 3.55fixed eboot ames from xmb like nfs hp and internal hdd games dantes inferno.
Let the games begin!!!

Was on OFW 3.55 (never updated to Geohot´s) and installed Wanikoko´s CFW from XMB. Worked perfectly. Then installed Rogero Manager 7.8 and backed up GoW Collection to my internal HD. Without a disc inside played it flawlessly. Extremely happy :D. PSN works too.

I have it. It is unstable, that's true, it hung a couple of times. But, the fact is, it works. I just finished playing the new CoD. But #2, I couldn't make Assassin's Creed, nor Majin work.

CECHP-12 on 3.41 official and ps3 key jailbreak installed multiman then updated to CFW 3.55. No Problem at all. CODBO and Lego Indiana jones do not work sofar. Tested Sly collection and MOH, after installing the updatedate from the game they played perfectly.

For those who bricked their console , did u try this? (saw it at psx-scene)
1. I inserted the PSJailbreak dongle (in jig mode downgrade stuff) Power + Eject. (made sure the dongle was on the left)
(i guess it can work with other dongles that also have a downgrade option and where you can use the service mode)
2. It switched off the ps3 itself.
3. Took out the psjb dongle and inserted a USB stick (FAT32) on the right usb port the 4th port to be exact.
(inside that stick there is 3.41 modded .pup + Lv2diag.self FILE 1 which is about 366 Ko)
4. Switched on the ps3 with the usb stick on the right usb port and then waited a long ass time,
about 5-10 min here then the stick was blinking and all that then suddenly the ps3 lights started to flash as well then it switched off by itself.
5 Then i just switched on the ps3 without the usb stick and there i was !!! i could see the xmb and all that on 3.41 now
but still in factory/service mode.
6. So i switched off the ps3 and inserted another usb stick with now the other Lv2diag.self FILE 2 (which is about 202 Ko).
then switched on ps3 with that other usb stick still in the right usb port and it switched off by itself again.
7. Then finally i switched on the ps3 without any usb stick or whatever and there was my console fully unbricked !

Correction: It installed the BM signed for this firmware. Nothing else will install, just as mentioned above. I think I'm about to try out the new one tonight, if I can't get black ops working on this one by the time I get tired of messing with it.

COD:Black Ops working 100% on this firmware.
I used the Rogero Manager that was released last night. The first time I tried running it, I didn't change any settings, it told me the EBOOT.BIN was corrupted, and asked me if I wanted to patch it. I said yes.
When it booted, I got a black screen and a freeze.
Restarted the PS3 and tried it with MultiMAN, same thing. black screen, freeze.
THEN, I loaded up Rogero Manager again, and pressed square for the "disc required" mode, popped in the Modern Warfare 2 disc, and loaded up Black Ops. Back out to the XMB, sure enough, where MW2 was supposed to be, was Black Ops. Works 100%, even on PSN. It will ask you to update to the newest version, just do that the same way you would on a non CFW PS3 and it will update. Restarts the game and Black Ops boots, plays, plays on PSN, and does so well.
Note. The copy I used was the BLES-01031 PAL copy. (interesting side note, the MW2 boot disc I am using is NTSC-U)

I have ordered a replacement second hand ps3. Can I use hard drive from my brick ps3 (with all the data in it, savegames etc)? Or can it brick the new ps3 which i have coming (firmware update has left something in the drive)? And if so, should i connect hard drive to pc and format it?

wow CODBO works perfectly !! i have installed signed Open Manager 2.1 and Blackb0x 1.2 and transfered the folder game , in this case " BLES-01031 " to the ps3 hd via FTP Client , and when i started the game i got the message eboot.bin is corrupted but i simply clicked on fix and everything went fine !!
my only question is this CFW safe to go play online and PSN ?

hi guy can u help me i have cfw installed waninkoko and multiman and its working well i have backed up hp lego. cod black ops. gt 5. and are all working fine i have also backed up cod world at war but this game wont load up .i have tried diffrent ways to boot direct from multiman from xmb disc and app folder but just black screen .have anyone got any suggestions or is this just not gonna work ?

tried kung fu rider (move) and spiderman - shattered dimensions. both work with rodero...
update...eyepet (move edition) only works for me if it stays in PS3 hdd. if i move it to external usb hdd drive it won't work.

i bricked my 60gb the motherboard is fried so says the repair shop. so i went to Sony they fix them for 129.99 not bad or they will send me a 120gb slim instead for 99.99 plus tax so i took them up on the offer so we will see how long it takes to get the 120gb sent to me im just happy i didn't have to spend 300 to get a new one cant afford it right now

Working guide on unbricking your ps3 due to this (not guaranteed, however has helped quite a few)

Testing more atm, will report back. Far as I know the firmware at this point, may or may not affect the console itself, however is primarily placed on the hdd. malfunctioning unit's after bricking here seem to read from a WIDE variety of problem's on the HDD after a failure, resulting in some very colorful errors (yellow light, ect). This should help quite a few though, and I'll report back with more before long. I'm testing now to pass the 256mb version's (A,B,C,D,ect) on Waki's CFW, very close.

hey boris i hope you succeed with the unbricking guide.my ceche01 broke because of this,and its like a brand new system i hardly ever used it,this is a software related issue not a hardware,after this one got bricked,i tried to format the hdd on another console and guess what!!?it got bricked to ass soon as i turned it on,it had a green light for like 10 seconds then beep blinking red!!

anybody get Ridge Racer 7 to work on this CFW? I just tried and get a blackscreen. I installed OFW then Geohot jb then installed MM & Comgenie and then CFW and everything else works fine. I installed RR7 into Internal of course.
