A few days ago we told you about AsbestOS v2.0 released,  there however was no installer included, but thanks to kha0S we have that now and its available to download with a nice video guide.

    To quote:

    Well folks, it’s done!

I’ve been working with kmeaw last couple of weeks in asbestOS v2.0. This release is easyer to use, and eases the installation of Debian GNU/Linux in your PS3. Right now, it’s the best way to overcome the loss of OtherOS feature.

    Hope everyone enjoys it!

We have made some videos! See the asbestOS v2.0 video walkthrough

And here is more of a better list of release notes for the newest version:

    - This tool installs AsbestOS, which can be used to boot Linux kernel from lv2patcher v9.

    - v2.0 is made by kmeaw and kha0S.

    - It allows you to install unmodified Debian Squeeze.

    - Full support to installation on External Hard Drive/Pen Drive. No PS3 disk installation for now.

    - All needed PS3 specific kernel modules are already pre-compiled and installed.

    - PS3 vram is enabled as swap as default

    - Thanks to marcan for AsbestOS, Mathieulh and graf_chokolo for default.spp trick, geohot for dev_flash mount code.

    - Thanks to jbc for testing and KingDong for the icon :)

    - Now it works on PS3 fat.

oh so very nice! you are the best kmeaw, and khaos ofc :D
so what, now we have to wait for someone to create an image file like before?

I've been waiting for OtherOS++, but since graf got raided, idk if the other PS3 scene hackers will continue that. This looks promising, still.

no doubt that the scene will take everything graf released and release something amazing

      can't wait!

      Doesn't work!

It unmounts the usb stops then says its missing 4 files need to run freezes and youre F'd this doesn't work at all. Not enough information was given to do this.

      Copying kernel..
      Connecting to ftp.debian.org (130.89.149.226:80)
      Initrd 100%
      Connecting to ftp.debian.org (130.89.149.226:80)
      Kernel 100%

Then its Unmonts the usb and waits forever does nothing but it tells me I'm missing files then goes to a black screen and nothing happens whats so ****ing ever.

What i would like is to have somthing that allows PSN users to see me online & msg me, & vice versa, but with no online play....

Well it's not so difficult. Just install AsbestOS and run LV2 patcher...

Then install the system, you don't need to download anything else it's a netinstall. Partition you USB drive with one ext4, one SWAP, and the rest can be fat32, or whatever you choose.

If you cannot help don't say anything
Well, that's all I did as well.

First thing, make sure you have your ps3 joypad plugged into port 1 using a usb cable.

Second make sure you have your usb external harddrive plugged into a port as well.

Thirdly MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN ETHERNET CABLE IN, then run asbestos 2 installer, then run lvl2 patcher and select linux.

Follow the onscreen prompts. No image file is needed as asbestos will download Debian Squeeze as part of the installation process.

I did these steps and got the system working nicely on my slim, I didn't bother with a gui though as I didn't need it for what I wanted and finished the install over ssh when prompted.

If you didn't understand any of the terms I've used, instead of ranting about me being unhelpful, you could perhaps go do a bit of googling and then you'd feel less inclined to demand spoonfeeding, because at the moment it appears that YOU don't know ****.

That image will work if you use asbestos 1.4. With AsbestOS 2.0 you don't need any images. You just need an ethernet cable connected from your ps3 to your modem or router with a dhcp server. Then start linux from lv2 patcher and follow on screen setup. I guess this is really useless information for you, but I'll just shut my mouth from now on. Anyway I'm happy with my new debian installation:aetsch:

you can get a fix here : http://ps3.khore.org/temporary-fix-f...ation-problems

I also have a problem, when I install debian, everyhing goed as it should be, but when I reboot, the Debian entry isn't added to the kboot.conf file, so it keeps installing over and over again.

I tried to edit the kboot.conf file manualy, but no luck there.

thanks i was having the same problem , so after a day of trying to install i went back down to 1.5 and ka0S v3.. heres the fix for everyone still looking at the red install screen..

Sorry for the delay, but we are now having problems with the new hosting too. So, I have a temporary fix.
      1 - Edit/create the kboot.conf file on your PS3. It's on /dev_hdd0.
2 - Add the following content after the existing entry:
      Install Debian GNU/Linux Temporary fix=http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/main/installer-powerpc/current/images/powerpc64/netboot/vmlinux initrd=http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/main/installer-powerpc/current/images/powerpc64/netboot/initrd.gz x=1 video=ps3fb:mode:131 preseed/url=http://193.136.216.216/mod/preseed.cfg auto=true interface=auto priority=critical
3 - Save, and start the installer using lv2patcher.
As soon as this is solved this entry can be removed. Sorry for all the problems!

but it would be nice to see a working kboot.conf file , anyone?
