A few days ago we told you about AsbestOS v2.0 released, there however was no installer included, but thanks to kha0S we have that now and its available to download with a nice video guide.
To quote:
Well folks, it’s done!
I’ve been working with kmeaw last couple of weeks in asbestOS v2.0. This release is easyer to use, and eases the installation of Debian GNU/Linux in your PS3. Right now, it’s the best way to overcome the loss of OtherOS feature.
Hope everyone enjoys it!
We have made some videos! See the asbestOS v2.0 video walkthrough
And here is more of a better list of release notes for the newest version:
- This tool installs AsbestOS, which can be used to boot Linux kernel from lv2patcher v9.
- v2.0 is made by kmeaw and kha0S.
- It allows you to install unmodified Debian Squeeze.
- Full support to installation on External Hard Drive/Pen Drive. No PS3 disk installation for now.
- All needed PS3 specific kernel modules are already pre-compiled and installed.
- PS3 vram is enabled as swap as default
- Thanks to marcan for AsbestOS, Mathieulh and graf_chokolo for default.spp trick, geohot for dev_flash mount code.
- Thanks to jbc for testing and KingDong for the icon
![]()
- Now it works on PS3 fat.

oh so very nice! you are the best kmeaw, and khaos ofc :D
so what, now we have to wait for someone to create an image file like before?
02-23-2011
07:54 PM
I've been waiting for OtherOS++, but since graf got raided, idk if the other PS3 scene hackers will continue that. This looks promising, still.
02-23-2011
07:58 PM
no doubt that the scene will take everything graf released and release something amazing
can't wait!

08:17 PM
No image file needed. Just install and run, from what i see on the video.

08:30 PM
Doesn't work!
It unmounts the usb stops then says its missing 4 files need to run freezes and youre F'd this doesn't work at all. Not enough information was given to do this.
Copying kernel..
Connecting to ftp.debian.org (130.89.149.226:80)
Initrd 100%
Connecting to ftp.debian.org (130.89.149.226:80)
Kernel 100%
Then its Unmonts the usb and waits forever does nothing but it tells me I'm missing files then goes to a black screen and nothing happens whats so ****ing ever.

09:21 PM
cool and now give us a new cfw and the whole ps3 scene is happy xD
02-23-2011
09:25 PM
what is wrong with the current one? i dont see the point in having a CFW that can play online. If one does come out that allows you to play online . PEOPLE WILL CHEAT!!!! simple as that.
What i would like is to have somthing that allows PSN users to see me online & msg me, & vice versa, but with no online play....
since i dont use it ever anyway

09:37 PM
does this replace GameOS or does it work like otheros did (allowing dual boot)
do I need the kmeaw firmware or can I use the geohot firmware?
02-23-2011
09:52 PM
worth a shot i guess.
02-23-2011

always fails @ software installing with me
i get pretty far, but after a long while and a lot of different screens, i end up with a red one saying software install failed.. gonna try that link mol666 gave me when it finishes downloading.
wish the OP could post a little more regarding this. i followed the video to the LETTER and still it just goes wrong..
02-24-2011
05:29 AM
Well it's not so difficult. Just install AsbestOS and run LV2 patcher...
Then install the system, you don't need to download anything else it's a netinstall. Partition you USB drive with one ext4, one SWAP, and the rest can be fat32, or whatever you choose.
02-24-2011
06:41 AM
NOT

06:57 AM
Hey, mol666. What is you problem? Here Kmeaw and Kha0S provides us with an ready to use debian installer. I am greatful for that. And it seems to work perfect. If you're not able to run through the simple debian setup, that's your problem. They even made videos showing step by step how to do it...

First thing, make sure you have your ps3 joypad plugged into port 1 using a usb cable.
Second make sure you have your usb external harddrive plugged into a port as well.
Thirdly MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN ETHERNET CABLE IN, then run asbestos 2 installer, then run lvl2 patcher and select linux.
Follow the onscreen prompts. No image file is needed as asbestos will download Debian Squeeze as part of the installation process.
I did these steps and got the system working nicely on my slim, I didn't bother with a gui though as I didn't need it for what I wanted and finished the install over ssh when prompted.
If you didn't understand any of the terms I've used, instead of ranting about me being unhelpful, you could perhaps go do a bit of googling and then you'd feel less inclined to demand spoonfeeding, because at the moment it appears that YOU don't know ****.

The setup of debian installer starts but in the network settings nothing working and on my tv the text of installation setup it is unclear but i know what i have to do beacause this is not the first time when a install a linux.
Dhcp could not gatter any ip, if i put the manual ip gw, mask , dns still not working ! I don't know what to do ! My ps3 is a phat one with 60 Gb 4 Usb and card reader.

Chill out josvadolla

That image will work if you use asbestos 1.4. With AsbestOS 2.0 you don't need any images. You just need an ethernet cable connected from your ps3 to your modem or router with a dhcp server. Then start linux from lv2 patcher and follow on screen setup. I guess this is really useless information for you, but I'll just shut my mouth from now on. Anyway I'm happy with my new debian installation:aetsch:

Okay Now, I've giving up all hope.
This doesn't work at all, same error message with all linux IMG's that have been posted on here I can't even get to an install screen anymore. whatever though, this shouldn't even be on the front page this is trash.
I now hate linux because of this.

Thanks
02-25-2011
05:38 AM
you can get a fix here : http://ps3.khore.org/temporary-fix-f...ation-problems
I also have a problem, when I install debian, everyhing goed as it should be, but when I reboot, the Debian entry isn't added to the kboot.conf file, so it keeps installing over and over again.
I tried to edit the kboot.conf file manualy, but no luck there.
Could someone post his one here as an example?
Or tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks in advance!
02-25-2011
07:00 AM
but it would be nice to see a working kboot.conf file , anyone?
02-25-2011
07:15 AM
This probably needs some more work cause it's easier to use the 1.5 release....
I've tried everything to make this work, including the fix....all I get is a
LeaseFail error....
Anyone what causes this ?
Using 1.5 version my mate had Linux up and running days ago !!!
