Latest version of BootOS v2.1 is out, aka AsbestOS v2.01. The only real diffrence is that it works better than v2.0, so those having problems with previous version try this one.

    To quote:

“No, it’s not a new application. We just uploaded a new version of our asbestos installer and decided in the process to give it a new name.

You can grab it here: bootOS v2.01

    Quick release notes:

    - New name (duh!)

    - Hosting problem is solved.

    Installation:

    - Delete asbestOS installer, install bootOS and run.

    - Launch it from lv2 patcher.

I’ll update later, with more info.”

This seems to be working better than the 2.0 release. Installing Debian as I type this.

Also if you are unsure what you want to tinker with I keep ASbestOS 1.5 and 2.01 on my external drive. Use 1.5 if you wish to try Madshaun1984′s Ubuntu, and 2.01 for Debian. All you have to do is follow instructions for the way to install each and run whatever ASbestOS installer for the correct distro. I basically have a dual boot Linux box.

I don't understand many of the problems people are having. It was simple, but I guess I am just lucky. All I did was run the ASbestOS installer then lv2 patcher. 2die4, yes you need ethernet.

ehm, ok. so you didn't press enter or X at ANY point during the installation? sorry for seeming rude, but could you please answer as to what choices you made during the installation? how you partioned the USB stick, locales and so on.

'I Used my 500GB external hard drive' and then used 'Acronis*True*Image*Home 11.0' and 'removed the fat32 partition then made it ext3 for linux'.. Then I just ran bootOS then Lvl2 v9 patch, with linux, then over a 'FTP server' I downloaded the OS files (DOWNLOAD-INSTALLS--Download time 2 hours--install time 1 hour), I believe. With the Ethernet cord attached to the ps3, everything went smooth.

When browsing the web, it freezes and I have to force the web browser to stop but oh well.

What I think made it work is that fact that I changed the 'external hard drive partition' before I did anything.

I can watch movies and play music I'm about to test a mame emulator, in the process of copying my roms to the linux hdd right now.

But I have got to say, this is probably just as good, as yellow dog linux. I heard yellow dog was slow on things as well.

When I'm not on the WEB and I'm just running software, If I allow it to load which takes a few mins, it goes pretty fast (Once its loaded that is.)

Program boot time isn't that good nor is multi tasking, multi tasking will lock your system up or it'll just freeze and you'll have to force stop a few things.

You formatted the hard drive to ext3 now all you have to is hook up the internet to the ps3 run BootOS then LV2 v9 Patcher pick linux and it just connects you to the ftp server in which you download your files from.

      Its pretty simple.

Note: DO NOT RUN ICEW browser its the reason why I kept freezing up use the one up top with the world on it. Its the icon above in the task bar right beside the System (Tab).

Everything seems fine now, I can't install the following though.

      1) apt-get install sdlmame- doesn't work
      2) apt-get install xmame- doesn't work
      3) You can't install wine, which kinda blows dockeys.
      4) The "emulator" we do have for this linux os does support ONE emulator but its trash it could NOT read any of my roms, its called "KamFu" I think. My advice don't waste your time trying it because it doesn't work at all.

I've tried sudo apt-get install sdlmame- and no - and it still doesn't allow me to install it or even get it to install it.

They should of made this with ubuntu 10.10 not Debian being Debian kinda sucks, its not really suitable for any software that I want to use.

Btw, I'm on linux ps3 right now typing this!

You need to setup dhcp on yr ps3 to do that make new wired connection and when it comes to dhcp just stick the name of yr router into the box ........and yr ext hdd needs to be ext3 format and you dont have anything on yr drive as it is a net install in other words it downloads it ....... if you dont know how to format to ext3 read the above posts.

Can BootOS2.01 load kernel from ext4 on /dev/usb00?

or does it still have to load linux kernel from mounted img on /dev/usb00 as FAT32?

For me its working on a USB stick 8 gig but when trying to install on external usb HD 550gig i get the same error as u, dont know why...

      Maby this works:

To be able to boot your debian installation, you need to check if a "kboot.conf" file is located at the / of your Debian partition.
It should be something like this:

      root@ps3 # cat /kboot.conf
      debian=/boot/vmlinux initrd=/boot/initrd.img vidmode=1 root=UUID=YOUR_PARTITION_UUID

To obtain your partition UUID, connect the disk to a linux machine, and use the " blkid -o udev /dev/device_and_partition_where_i_installed_debian".

      @surmiklo13

U dont need any image, just install the BootOS 2.1 make sure u have an ext3 formatted usb stick connected > 4 Gig, and run lv2 patch.Debian will install from net, also make sure u have a working internet connection(cable)

I can change it in windows but it wont let me write the edited file back because it wont write over the old Kboot file....

i bet u don't know **** about linux and that it is light.
and the comparison i made is already enough that this linux isn't usable for the public, maybe only for tards...
Meaning you are tard, then i say: I DID NOT SAY THAT THE DEVS DID CRAP, I MEANED ASBESTOS IN THE CURRENT STATE IS CRAP

So for the tards again my opinon is that the dev's shouldnt have released this TILL it has a normal speed, because a freaking single core beats a 8 core machine? AsbestOs says that the ps3 got 2 cores.. so which means the speed MUST have been way more better..

im not spoiled.. when someone released something i just trust it wouldnt be crap

I have used linux on a daily basis since 1998... I guess I don’t know about linux.

But you are right AsbestOS in the current state is not for entertainment, but for those who would like to do further development.

Nope, you really haven't got a clue have you. I'll explain for you.

Asbestos or Bootos as it is now known allows you to install Debian Squeeze this is a basic operating system utilising the generic linux kernel, in this case it's the PPC kernel, what you do with that installation is up to you, if you go ahead and install a HUGE gui like GNOME then I imagine it would be slow, the issue isn't anything to do with the fact that the ps3 has 8 cores, it's to do with RAM, the ps3 only has 256mb of RAM onboard it, this means when you try to run something like GNOME on it and you'll very quickly run out causing the ps3 to use swap which is SLOW...

The other factor at the moment is compatibility, a PS3 and your crappy netbook have two totally different processor architectures, you're comparing apples to orange really, so a Debian install on an intel processor has better compatibility to a PPC Cell processor such as you'd find in the PS3, this means that the PS3 version of Debian needs tweaking to allow access to the more advanced features of the system it's running on, stuff that isn't really that easy to figure out. This isn't helped by the fact that the stock PS3 debian kernel that asbestos uses has a bug in it restricting the ram to 108mb

Now the way I see it, I'm pleased that the devs released this even with a few bugs as it let me use my ps3 as a low power newsgroup/torrent downloader, I wouldn't criticise any of their work seeing as I couldn't replicate any of it myself.

I'm sorry I can't dumb it down anymore but if linux is a bit scary then perhaps you'd be better off doing something else with your time rather than complaining about the things that you get for free.

I await your badly spelled and illiterate response. :-P

Ok I get it running but it is not something we can use for now. I hope they will get it running faster.

I don't know about yours and what copied in 20m. I am just saying that this version of Linux is slow and hope they could do better in future I can't even get my cursor to move. Well that just me may be.

It lacks some drivers for graphics and RAM handling, you should download the latest kernel and compile it.

anybody who wants to run debian a little bit faster , try fluxbox , it's light & nice for a change if you get board of the default desktop and saves a few mb in ram.. you can also set it to go into fluxbox from login..

sudo aptitude fluxbox or sudo apt-get install fluxbox

      there's also a nice ps3 skin..

Found this solution to make a very small Debian Install, maybe it will save some Mb's to?

install the base system, that means when it comes to the package selection uncheck all the packages(standard and desktop)
after the reboot, there won't be a gui yet
      login as root
apt-get install xorg gdm synaptic fluxbox emelfm leafpad dillo
      reboot
select fluxbox from the session menu <important
      login
open synaptic and get what ever else you want,
      emelfm is a filemanager
      leafpad is a text editor
dillo is a small web browser

Haven't tested this, found it while looking around if there is a Puppy Linux PPC distro and remembered your post about fluxbox .
Someone is trying to port Puppy Linux to PPC/Mac but no real progress besides an early beta from a while back if someone wants to know. Looks like that person has quit his project. Too bad, Arcade Puppy would be fun to run
