A while ago it was reported in the media that LG and Sony were in a legal battle, over infingments caused by Sony towards LG, just today, LG won a ten day injunction, blocking the import of all PS3 consoles, here is a quote from the source:
European customs officers have been ordered to seize shipments of Playstation 3s after LG won a preliminary injunction against Sony in an acrimonious patent battle between the two Asian electronics giants.
The ruling by the civil court of justice in the Hague means that all new PS3s have to be confiscated as they are imported into the UK and the rest of Europe for at least 10 days.
If the injunction was extended it could mean consoles disappearing from high street shelves. It is understood that Sony and computer games retailers typically have about two to three weeks’ worth of PS3s in stock across the continent.
Tens of thousands of PS3s were seized by customs officers last week in the Netherlands, the Guardian has learnt, in a dispute that centres on Sony’s allegedly infringing use of Blu-ray technology belonging to LG.
Sony, which imports around 100,000 of the consoles a week, is frantically trying to get the ban lifted. The Japanese company has the right to appeal to the European patents office.
LG meanwhile, could apply to the same patents office to get the 10-day import ban extended. Alternatively, the Korean company could apply for a court order to get the consoles destroyed but it is highly unlikely the court would grant a request to eliminate the warehoused goods.
LG argues that Sony PS3s infringe a number of its patents relating to playback of Blu-ray Discs. LG called for an investigation into the PS3′s Blu-ray use in a filing with the US international trade commission earlier this month, and said it sought a “permanent exclusion order … excluding entry into the United States” of the games console.
If Sony is found to have infringed LG patents, it could be forced to compensate the South Korean manufacturer for each PS3 it has sold around the world, which could cost hundreds of millions of pounds.
The two technology giants are involved in a complex web of seven separate patent disputes, with Sony also seeking to block shipments of LG smartphones to the US.
Rotterdam and Schiphol are the main import points for PS3s for both the UK and continental Europe. The consoles are being stockpiled in Dutch warehouses until it becomes clear how the case will develop.
A spokesman for Sony Playstation said: “We are currently looking into this matter, and cannot make any comments at this point in time.” LG declined to comment, although sources close to the company confirmed the current legal position.
Sony has sold more than 3m PS3s in the UK since its launch in March 2007. The Japanese manufacturer is understood to have a stockpile of around 6,500 PS3s in Germany and 10,000 in the UK.
However, the majority of PS3 sales around Europe are pre-orders, meaning they are already sold before they gather dust at warehouses in the UK and elsewhere. Stockpiles could run out within two to three weeks if the ban is not lifted, the Guardian understands.

Great news...... infringe on another companies patents? Sony is not above the law themselves.
02-28-2011
02:15 PM
If I'm not mistaken, this patent issue only involved one model-type (model #) of PS3, right?
02-28-2011
02:16 PM
EPIC. Sony could make a movie which chronicles their own ineptitude in an attempt to recover the money they have lost to all the "evil" pirates.

02:26 PM
man, sony has got some half-assed engineers working for them.
02-28-2011
02:32 PM
Sony are trying to be above the law in the other major case (geohot vs sony) thats being reported across the world, I just hope this news/ban gives them the reality check the so obviously need.
Good on LG, now if we all filed suit and took them to court over the gross misconduct sony have shown with our information being transmitted to and from the ps3 in an unsecured way, the software/hardware giant, would soon become an ant.
02-28-2011
02:32 PM
All I can say is Sony F***ed up big this time. Well that's what you get for stealing your ideas from someone else. Good thing I already have my PS3
02-28-2011
02:33 PM
and you wondered why Sony is trying to sue graf for 1 million dollars? here's our answer. So now the question becomes, are we actually playing on a pirated system and the scene being blamed? Seems to me that the ps3 is illegal in the first place and we are playing on stolen material. excuse me if i am wrong but is that not pirating?
02-28-2011
02:38 PM
ROFPMSL!!!!!

They deserve all they get as they brought this one on themselves by suing LG first.
I think they really do have a God complex

[quote=bloomberg]According to Bloomberg, LG's Blu-ray patents are for a way of dealing with multiple data streams, such as different camera angles, as well as a system to reproduce data that's stored on a read-only device. [quote]

It is silly, we have seen how corporations go after downloaders and hackers, but these corporations are the biggest thieves of all!
Record labels inteh US owe canadian artists and publishers $6 billion! http://tinyurl.com/5sqkgj2 That's in Canada alone! Imagine the global theft! They basically note down they owe royalties and claim they will notify and pay later!
As for Hollywood, how many original film have they released in teh last decade? Mostly been badly made remakes.
In reply to first post, do sony deserve this? Yes, it will be hard to find anyone who has read up what has been going on with this ps3 case properly and knows what is going on, to think otherwise. We are all laughing our heads off.
Though this may give a reason as to why sony want to sue everyone, they need money to pay off LG :D
02-28-2011
02:47 PM
talking about karma......but i think it's not good that this is happening.....first of all everything's about money..so,saying that, sony's actions are all about money, not punishing us or whatever.....we want everything for free and without consequences; u think that's k?
i don't know what this report has to do with this site.....please tell me....
i'm not happy about this,i'm not sad either....this doesn't concern me or the other people that are on this site.....
PLEASE BUY THE GAMES THAT U LIKE!!Think of the consequences people....not buying games will lead to less qualitative games...i don't think u want that...
oo and about that 1 procent of the community that is playing pirate games...this is true but this is only the begining..soon more people will join the ''pirate tribe'' wich will lead to what i said before.... we have to keep a balance...it's k to play a downloaded game as long u didn't liked that much so that u would buy it if there whasn't an alternative(jailbreak)....but if u do like it that much...i would buy it...cuz a game or more in a year are not that expensive...

@msergiu9r

It's on here because it's a PS3 related topic for one. Sony make the PS3, ergo, it's here.
It's also here and getting so many people wetting themselves about it because Sony Have been attempting to bully everyone into doing what they want (even LG in the past) and it is hilarious that they are getting some of it back because they are being accused of committing a crime just like they say GH and Graf have.
If correct, then Sony are actually bigger pirates than anyone as they have copied something to make money from it whereas virtually everyone who has illegally copied a game for the PS3 has done it for themselves with no monetary profit made.
It's actually made my day as until I read this my day was an absolutely pants one

As long as they don't trying nick my console , it's a good thing . So i wander if they have to take them off sale here now?

its about time that they got a taste of their own medecine. they attacked LG first, much the same way they attack our devs, only this time they have come up against a heavy hitting opponent. they like to sue and have restraining orders. let them have them too.

Since Sony themselves state the PS3 is a COMPUTER and NOT a CONSOLE. Remember all applicable laws related to pcs should apply. This includes removal of features without letting the customer know in updates. Microsoft and Apple BOTH state what each and every update does. SONY DOES NOT.
If you update from OFW 2.76 to 3.56, no mention of removal of OTHEROS is stated. although they do state that they are not held responsible if a single thing works after one of thier updates. Such as BluRay for movies/games, etc. I assume this would cover the OtherOS without telling the end user and people's issues with no playback on thier BluRay movies.

Both LG & Sony are part of the Blu-ray Group as are other electronic makers. You would assume that any Blu-ray patents held would be shared.

05:09 PM
Oh the irony of owning PS3 and playing on LG lcd screen :D
02-28-2011
05:16 PM
This may not be the great news you all think it is....
All it might do is expose Sony as thiefs. What if LG wins ? How will LG respond ? Will they refuse to let Sony use the Tech, will your current drive then be supported should it require repair ?
Could the cost of losing this law suit and any payout to LG cause Sony to drop the PS3 ? Sony claim they make a loss on the console as it is, this and the PS3 security hacks could cause all kinds of problems making the PS3 a monkey on their backs.
Do we really want Sony to lose this, it has far more serious issues than just a few hackers being able to score points over the custom firmware issue ?
02-28-2011
05:19 PM
well to think of this -_- sony is now desperatly looking for the top hackers to sue em to pay off LG -_- sony is a bi*tch sony i hope u get owned by LG and all the hackers from george holtz, choco- and on! Justice is being served.

Glad thing we're quite serious about patent infringement here in the Netherlands. Wish they'd also pay attention to other things tho.
F*cking governement... :canabis:
02-28-2011
05:40 PM
To those saying companies need to relax on there patents are idiots. companies pay good money for the tech they develop and others wanting to use there tech should pay. Sony started the fight stating LG was infringing on some of there patents so like others have said karma is a b_t_h.
I used to love sony but now i wish there company failed hard so other companies dont try to do the same to there consumers.
To those saying BUY YOUR GAMES i totally agree. the thing is companies release some much crap i only buy 1 or 2 games now. this year all ive bought has been DC Online, and KZ3. ive tried all the rest but they havent kept my attention...
Down with SONY!! :thefinger:
02-28-2011
05:43 PM
If LG wins, I can hardly see them banning all further PS3 support, they'll prolly have the courts make Sony pay out millions in loss revenue for the technology they used, and have a fee for further usage. This sucks in a way cause the $ lost will be thrown back at consumers, but whatever; in the end this doesn't really change a damn thing. This kind of corporate thefts always happen, and always will, but technology will continue regardless.
02-28-2011
06:25 PM
Funny how the patent issue with LG infringing Sony phone patents has led to LG saying the same that Sony infringes on LG Blu-ray patents.
They should just swap patents and be done with it.
02-28-2011
07:32 PM
Sony deserve this and much much worse.

I hope the NPDRM key is released soon, would really screw Sony over.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer corporation.

Nice to see sony getting kicked in the balls...I am sure it will all get settled out of court...but it is still nice to see them having problems of any kind. They probably could have blocked the injunction...if their entire legal team was not dedicated to attacking innocent people.

I bought the PS3 back in the 3.21 days, and the instruction manual has 4 or 5 license texts on the last page, along with download links to the source codes.
GNU or GPL state that you must provide credit and source, but it does by no means define HOW you provide it, as long as it is synchronous.

09:34 AM
It is SONY who is suffering and that we DO enjoy. Check back to the mentions about their case against LG here and other places in the past and you will see virtually nobody enjoying it.
You are also wrong in saying that whether Sony wins or loses on this will not affect us as it will. If they lose the least that happens is that they get some of the wind knocked out of their sails regarding their apparent belief that they are untouchable legal wise. Reverse that if they win and they have another string in their bow.
I personally am loving it, and I sencerely hope they get all they deserve

Hahahah. Sony thinks that they are fooling people. This is what sony want from the get go. You mean to tell me that the PS3 been out for this long and LG finally sueing them so that they cannot ship new systems? Please!

Like the Joker said, "It's all part of the plan!" Sony wants to stop those new shipments because those system is hackable and they finally have their so called "Unhackable system" ready. So they make up this lawsuit that they they know full well that they will settle out of court (If this lawsuit even really exists), get the exisiting shipment back, and reship the new systems that is supposenly unhackable. This way all Hackable system comes back to sony and the new shipment have disable custom firmware. Just you wait and see.

EDIT I guess by your nick here that you are from UK like me. Was it LG that you struggled with or the shop you bought it from?
I ask because I have had LG products for years, and only one real problem with a dvd/entertainment box (new). The shop I bought it from were arguing severely even after I showed them printed copies of trading standards etc. They kept saying it was LG's responsibilty (Even though it was not). I E-Mailed LG and told them the situation and within 48hrs the shop called me arranging to pick up faulty kit and drop me a new one off at same time with an apology that I had been incorrectly informed that it was LG's responsibility and not theirs.

Sony just need to be knocked down a peg or two.
if LG win, it won't destroy Sony and for them to recover they would be made to rely on their customer satisfaction which at the moment isn't exactly going well for them.
I hope Sony do lose and have to pay damages. it will show them if nothing else that they aren't the biggest fish in the sea and more importantly NOT above the law as they believe.
leave us the hell alone with our products Sony and we may continue to buy from you. if we void our warranty, then so be it but you do not own our ps3s and if We want to hack/smash/make love to them, then we will. accept it.
you broke the law, we broke the TOS. big difference
