Andoma has released Showtime - a PS3 Homebrew Home Theater System application. Showtime is a media player for use on HTPC media centers. It is primarily intended to be controlled via keypad input such as a IR or bluetooth remote control, keyboards, etc but works also very well with a pointer device.
Features:
- Playback of video and audio
- Javascript plugins
- Unified search
- View photos and images in slideshow mode
- Live TV streaming from Tvheadend
- Spotify integration

Getting started

Full featureset see: This
Most of this should work except for playback of high res. HD videos (basically when the PPU runs out of cycles). There are some methods of fixing them, but no one knows yet. I will update it when they do.
This has been tested with 576i, 720p and 1080i video resolutions.
People have tried to set reasonable defaults for overscan compensation. But if it not correct for you it can be adjusted under Settings -> Display and UI settings
✕ Enter current item
○ Go back (exit)
△ Show options / playcontrol menu
□ Screensaver (Until something better has been figured out)
► Play/Pause
▬ Home menu
✜ Navigate it
L3 - Get playback info (During video playback)
R3 - Get log console
-The only current way to input characters is by using a standard keyboard.
- Virtual keyboards are supported at the moment.
Things that do NOT work
-TV-style remote controller has not been tested. No idea if it works or not.
-BD/DVD/CD Discs - No idea how that works
-Digital pass thru audio (AC3, DTS, etc)
Please issue them here.
Build it yourself!?

I've seen a post on psx-scene saying mkv are supported but some files are a bit slow and out of sync.
Note this is still a beta, which is why the dev has asked people to let them know of any problems and if poss a link to the file which causes the bugs.
03-16-2011
11:19 PM
Tested on 3.41. No worky.
03-16-2011
11:22 PM
Nice to see progress, too bad it really doesn't really work yet, but I hope to be watching MKV and OGG files with subtitles and multiple audio streams very soon. Maybe they could even add ISO support...like VLC does; I just double-click the ISO file and it opens up a VLC window that is just like if I had slid the DVD in (except I can skip the commercials)...that way I don't even need to convert to MKV.

Excellent work dev! Guys, chill with the complaints. Does anyone have any idea how hard it is to code especially with media. We are pioneers, in an uncharted land. The PS3 is finally opened up, it will take time for devs to work out bugs and kinks in programs. Be thankful they are even doing it in the first place. I'm just happy to be able to run things other than what $ony dictates to me. This is the whole reason everyone fights for our freedom to use OUR game systems, so we can improve upon what the company as a whole lacks.

If it cant play
-Digital pass thru audio (AC3, DTS, etc)

While I like the idea of streaming Live TV and spotify support would be awesome, I can play just about everything already on my ps3 using ps3 media server on my PC, where I store all my media anyways.
Still waiting for an all in one solution that plays anything you can throw at it, has live streaming, smb and plugin support...ya know, XBMC.

Can someone plz explain if you need to have the pc turned on or something for streaming to take place or is it like sopcast etc but on your ps3 which would be awesome
Any help appreciated. aND THNX TO all devs who made this possible.

Looking fwd to seeing the progress made on this, seems very promising and a step closer to making the PS3 a true media center that rivals XBMC.
Definitely willing to chip in a donation--as this is what I really wanted (don't care much about games, outside of purchasing MK when it drops next month) when the ps3 first came out til when CFW's started dropping...

Awesomeness!!! My dreams of a perfect media box with a bluray drive just got closer to being real. I am still hoping for XBMC to be ported, but this will do until or if the XBMC never makes it.

for 3.41/Waninkoko CFW users:

The PKG has been signed (finalized for 3.55) if you really want this to work. You need to extract the files from the PKG and then rePKG it but do not finalize it.
Tested on my Waninkoko 3.55 v2 - worked perfectly.
If you don't know how to rePKG or just can't be bothered. I have uploaded the pkg I created here:
Get it here and give it a try: http://www.filesonic.com/file/266909...nkoko-3.55.pkg

Look at it this way: We all know the PS3 has enough power to do almost everything. It has enough power to run Linux, to use NTFS, to build a supercomputer with a couple of PS3's and now also can be used as a mediaplayer with all kind of codec support. Sony has the power to implant it easily to make us happy and they don't. Not "they can't" but "they don't". Proof me wrong here Sony !!
We look at the PS3 as playstation fans, Sony looks at the PS3 as green paper $ -fan :boxing:

This is the BEST piece of homebrew that's been released since the PS3's been jailbroken!
I absolutely LOVE IT!
While the UI is definitely a fancy one, I must admit it could be a little more user friendly. On the whole, this app is just awesome. I'll definitely be looking forward to future updates.
03-17-2011
11:39 PM
I would have to also agree that this by far is the best homebrew app that could have ever been released. I also look forward to updates of it. I'm not going to bother with the beta since it has tons of issues it seems? So ya I'll keep my eye out on this one.
03-18-2011
12:25 AM
This program is amazing. Confirm, that it can play MKV, but for me it lags. I was watching anime at 720p (but with low bitrate and all) and it was lagging. I guess it's due to the codec? I don't know.

Overall. Great program. Keep it up.
03-18-2011
12:40 AM
MKV works for me but its kinda laggyy! GOod work guyz! just wait for the next update
03-18-2011

THIS IS AWESOMEEEE!!!
Man thanks for your hard work I wanted something like this since like forever hope you continue your work. Installed with no problems and works like a charm. And for the people who are complaining get over is just plain cruel to say this is crap specially after the coder must have spent a lot of time and hard work on this.

This Media Player looks extremely promising. I will most definitely be using this a lot to test and provide feedback. I look forward to seeing this Homebrew grow massive & also the support!

03-20-2011
08:31 AM
Damn first release and people crying. Its awesome for first release. I have willing be testing as much as I can. First movie I sent to it I didn't release was 1080p and it played fine but I only loaded it for like 30 seconds. It was one of the few wmv's I have. I load an avi sample which seemed fine. Another avi that had subs worked too. Sending an mkv now....
************* [ - Post Merged - ] *************
OK I was wrong the 1080p was terrible. Like a frame at a time after the logos finished. 1 mkv I played had the sound completely broken. Nfo says that rip had AC3. Another was out of sync and very choppy. Nfo says that rip has DTS audio. Would have thought it was the other way around.

Very nice piece of homebrew!

I've tested many different 720x480 mkv files, and the video looks nice and clean. Audio gets out of sync for a few seconds if you seek-forward or rewind, but it catches back up after a few seconds. Not sure if that's intended or not.
Also, I noticed on one of my mkv files that the subtitles aren't displaying properly. It's a movie I ripped and encoded myself, using DVDFab and HandBrake, and I can verify on my computer's mkv player that the subtitles are properly encoded into the file, but Showtime on the PS3 won't display them at all. When I select the subtitle stream, nothing changes at all. And it's at a point in the movie where they should be coming up, so I know I'm not crazy.
Anyway, I realize that this is just the first release, so I'm very happy to be patient and make do in the meantime. Thank you very much, and I'm looking forward to future improvements!

Allright thx , ive made separate folder for movies , but how to change language in mkv ?
04-08-2011
07:58 PM
To change language, triangle during playback, then move over (With the d-pad) to the symbol at the far right and press it, you can change audio and subtitle tracks from there.
This media player definitely surpasses the built-in media player now that it both plays MKV files AND has subtitle and multiple-audio track support.
All I can ask for now, is stretching to fit the screen with video, and built-in audio control. Past that? GREAT work on this app devs, I've already donated to your project in the hopes of seeing it grow and improve!

Andoma ... shotime works very well ..better than last version. if you are still improving the app. can you please consider adding zoom options x1,x2,x3,x4, i have ripped dvds to full 1080p .m4v files at 2GB FLAWLESS QUALITY !! every movie i watch, has a black border around the whole pitcher frame in showtime. the top & bottom needs adjusting also both right & left side... so zoom function will make it fully worth using showtime a plus ! vs ps3s default player.. please add zoom options !! love it great app, thanks for the release !!

I have a question. Has anyone at all tried lets say you got a movie that has no english subtitles. Like a japanese version of a movie or Japanese(only) audio. And I don't mean a downloaded movie, I own the japanese version of Advent Children Complete. If anyone is familiar with the japanese version you'd recall it has both japanese audio and english audio....what I am wondering is...with the updated version to Showtime that allows Subtitles....is it possible to enable such subtitles to a DISC movie??? You put in a disc and would it be possible to play it with the subtitle file in Showtime? Course the question will also have to be answered about does Showtime allow Discs to be played. I have no tried discs yet. So that's somthin I would like to know as well. If not I guess it's not a big deal but I am just saying it would be a big help. And it'd be really cool if that was possible because I hate Watching the movie in english when the version I have is the actual imported japanese version. I'm kind of a japanese obsessed person lol I like to watch most animes/movies ect in japanese if they are originally suppose to be. That's what I am getting at. Anyway...I'd appreciate any help on this matter. If it's not possible thats ok. I just wanted to ask if anyone has done this.

Has anyone used the Tvheadend streaming from a Linux TV server with Showtime installed?
07-17-2011
09:36 AM
Is anyone here super knowledgeable about the MKV file format? I thought this might be as good a place as any to ask, since I figured most Showtime users utilize MKVs.
I'm wondering about MKV metadata. I've googled for hours and learned that MKV supports metadata, but apparently there are no good GUIs for metadata editing available, not to mention that most MKV players don't properly read metadata anyway.
So two questions:
1) Is that correct? No good GUIs yet for MKV metadata editing, and not many MKV players read it anyway?
2) Does Showtime read metadata? (When a file is highlighted in Showtime, I see the whole right side of the screen available for file information -- which displays things like runtime, codecs, subtitle languages -- shouldn't that be used for metadata?)
Thanks for any help!

Just like RAX909, I was also wondering if it would be possible to play bluray discs using ShowTime, also for exactly as he wants it, being able to use external srt subtitles with a real disc (would be awesome, then you wouldn't have to worry if the disc has subtitles in your own language and you just download them), but for me there's another very important reason, Subtitle Shift, there are so many bluray's out here in the netherlands (2.35:1) which have the subtitle placed partially in the active screen and partially in the black borders, and we all know the PS3 doesn't have subtitle shift like most oppo and philips bluray players. I don't want to buy a new bluray player since I already own a PS3, and asking Sony for usefull feature is like asking for hell to freeze over..
But I guess you'll need some more access to the hardware to have access to the blurayplayer..
