Sony has finally admitted why PSN has been down for days, and it is what everyone has been assuming. A group or possibly even a single hacker brought down the giant. Down time for PSN was reported to be “1 to 2 full days”, but after this update it is certain that is not the case, here is a quote from the PS Blogs:
An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.
Many have thought hackers from within “Anonymous” have been behind this. An official post from Anonymous’s website reports that “For Once We Didn’t Do It”. If thats the case, who is and are they “brave” enough to come forward, here is a quote from them:
For Once We Didn’t Do It
Sony’s Playstation Network, its online service for Playstation 3 and its Playstation Portable consoles, suffered from a major outage today; which is on going as of this writting. According to Son’ys blog, the interruption in service may last into the long weekend – for at least another “full day or two”. Sony released a statement through its EU blog, saying that the network outage may be a result of “targeted behaviour by an outside party”, brining in the possibility of cyberattacks. Adding to the confusion is the fact that the message has since been removed.
While it could be the case that other Anons have acted by themselves AnonOps wa not related to this incident and takes no responsiblity for it. A more likely explination is that Sony is taking advantage of Anonymous’ previous ill-will towards the company to distract users from the fact the outage is accutally an internal problem with the companies servers.
TL:DR
Sony is incompetent.

Sony have updated their PS Blog, this is what it says:
We sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.
We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available.

Working in a similar field (with about 69.5 million less users). I find it astonishing it has taken them this long to really tell the users that they purposefully turn the system down. Let alone that it took then 1 or 2 two days to provide an update. At the business I work at we normally provide updates on even small things every hour, even if that update is to say there is currently no new updates.
On another note, even though I am affected by the PSN being down. I am not upset at anyone but Sony. I ponder what actions and decisions Sony will take after this and if anyone comes out of the wood work to take credit. I have often said the main fault in most hackers is vanity.

What I don't understand is why they are claiming the network has only been down 2 days, when it was officially shut off more than two days ago, and it wasn't working for online gaming for about a week before that.
Knowing sony and promises, I am starting to suspect that the forever free PSN we were promised is going to go away, and PSN+ is going to be the only way to play online. They will say that this is for security, and their loyal fanboys will say how happy they are to have the chance to pay money to connect to a network with almost no one to play against. Meanwhile, there will have to be a mirror to the OtherOS case...that case is suing for removal of OtherOS; not for removal of the PSN...the next case will sue for removal of the PSN.
The only problem with that theory is that it leaves sony little room to remove more advertised features; and what would sony do if not removing features? At that point, they might as well close shop.
BTW...I decided to put on GT5P again last night...I've been playing GT5 a lot and I kinda wanted something to compare it with. It refused to start because the network is down...this is the only PSN game I tried with these results...are there others?

Everyone remember when $ony said "We will never remove OtherOS". That was in Dec 2009 and guess what they did in Feb 2010. They removed OtherOS.

Well doesnt the new US TOS now say they may change to charge for the creation of accounts or something along those lines? Someone else was saying the same thing I was thinking elsewhere. Sony are liars and have been involved in the infamous rootkit scandal, they lied to everyone about Other O/S and used it as a selling point and to avoid taxes in the UK by claiming the gaming console was a personal computer.
Lately we've seen just how corrupt and how evil the corporation of Sony actually is, but hey, all corps are evil in hindsight bit none from the BIG 3 have abused consumers like Sony.

Overall I just don't know what to believe. Part of me says that cyberspace is still the wild wild west and you have to know how to behave. $ony thinks it is like the real world and they own everything. Not true on the internet. They are already messing with the fan speeds in older models using firmware updates; they don't need the PSN to cause YLODs...they just need people to upgrade their firmwares. That is a nice bonus because there will be some people who don't think the PSN is worth the money once sony starts charging...and Sony can still YLOD them with the update PUP that comes on the game disks.
I would love to see a PSN exodus...if only xlink kai didn't require a PC or a high end router...just think, a whole online community, free of Sony, and with no trophy whores asking everyone to stand in a strait line so he can get a "3 kills with one shot" trophy.

Personally I think it is crap. A few hundred rebug users online compared to the millions on PSN worldwide, and they take it down. That and with free Xbox live weekend going on this would be a dumb move by Sony. Destroy the online experience for millions to stop a small fraction of people that use a cfw? I don't know what happened, and I dont care, but anyone on the said dev networks right now is asking for it. Almost 300 people on SP-INT playing CoD BO. Well since PSN is down and people are still somehow accessing game servers I think Sony may finally start swinging the ban hammer. If you are on a dev network you deserved to banned. So this update was supposedly to go live on Wednesday and shortly afterwards the entire system craps out. Could it be this "update" is the true reason behind it all. Most likely so far, we all know that the system was shutdown by Sony its not that it is currently being attacked. We also know if it was an attack, Sony would have swapped servers, changed IP's, DNS and the rest of that technical cr@pola they did with the Anonymous attacks, which took the Corporate giant hours to fix not days!!
Things just aren't adding up. At least Amazon who's cloud service (well parts of it) went down on Thursday have been straight with its info and is regually updating their customers. Take a note here Sony from Amazon.. the truth shall set you free.
I bet that the problem is fixed already its just taking Sony some time to put some kind of spin on the fact it balls'd up. Most likely "We at Sony can confirm that due to the supposed Playstation Life update, parts of our system failed. As I said before though, it is Not about whether it is better on PS3 or not, it Is about the Fact that the PS3 was sold to me with it advertised as a feature. Also have you Ever seen a PS3 game that says it needs a certain FW to be able to run? (the answer is No) This is not about PSN at all for me, and I think that if it Is being hacked then they are ruining the whole scene for everyone but Sony. It Is about me being able to use the PS3 As I Bought It with Any game I buy and use the features it was sold to me with.
I was also not informed that my PS3 does not have the emotion engine etc to make it backward compatible. That was also one of the reasons I bought it as a friends does have it all (launch edition), but I accepted that although I already felt shafted by Sony even then.
Do you now understand a wee bit better why I personally am so ****ed off with Sony?

We all know PSN was hacked. We were able to get on it with cfw and even play on the dev PSN. I have no doubt this pissed Sony and the devs off. My guess is that Sony were unable to stop people doing this with PSN in its current state. They will add the additional security required to detect and ban cfw users using rebug to gain psn access. I love homebrew, however Sony are winning the battle over the hacking of the PS3. I know guys love Linux and I am happy they have got it back but I don't use or need it so without decent homebrew my cfw is useless. I am holding back from returning to ofw in the hope that something worthwhile is on the horizon but I am always disappointed.
There will be no 3.60 cfw. Sony have shut the system down tight, they are doing the same with PSN. Have to hand it to them, they are doing their job very well.

If you remember before 2 years Xbox Live shutdown
for TWO WEEKS and if you take a look at Xbox Forums at this time
everybody wrote about Microsoft Sucks and Microsoft support sucks etc.
Same case everywhere,we are junkies of VideoGames and we are never satisfied
And i cant understand how some people make post on Official PS site
when you must sign in to make post and give you error when you try it Server is Down
I believe the problem have to do with PORTAL 2 Video Game and the STEAM co-operation with PSN,they try to close all the holes in security before enable STEAM on PSN

Sony have stated that they have 69 m subscribers but seeing as theyve only crossed the 50 mill unit mark I find that doubtful. at any rate if they offered something free for the downtime Ide expect everyone to come out of the wood work to take advantage of it.. especially the ones who say they dont care if the psn ever comes back up.
yknow Id love to see a poll somewhere to guage how many scensters even had
an originally linux capable machine. just out of curiosity (to bad it would be as accurate as asking how many people back up vs. how many people outright pirate)
I had seen some Sony hate since oOs removal but it really has spiked since jailbreaking became available.
But I used to see a whole lot of hate from xbots who would never buy a playstation until they could pirate its games. is there a correlation. I dont know.

"deleted" is probably another way of saying "not transfered".

Sony haven't confirmed anything yet on the cause, solution or an ETA or when things will be back up but we are also talking about a company here that can't even be @rsed to change the green ON dot next to their server status on their official blog to a RED off dot or even an AMBER "we still screwed" dot.

They were arrested for the anti-Wikileaks attacks against Paypal, Mastercard etc.
Scotland Yard I am sure are pursuing the matter but no arrests have been made so far in regards to this "so-called" attack.
EDIT: I am sorry but I was wrong (like so many others including that Youtube vid) the Anonymous arrests now stand at 6 in britian, they got another one earlier this month.
