Over the past few moths, Sony have been getting quite a bad deal in regards to hacks, after the return of PSN, we had the issue on the official Playstation websites, where a vulnerability was found with the sign in process, then security experts F-Secure found a Phishing website being hosted on the official homepage of Sony Thailand(Source).

An anonymous hacker has contacted us today (not to be confused with Anonymous) releasing a PDF theory which will help hackers learn more about 3.6x firmwares, which in turn can lead to the 3.6x key decryption…hence custom firmware.

Please not before continuing that this a highly technical document, and is a theory at the very least so we are labeling this as a rumor - but this information should hopefully get us in the right step towards 3.6x CFW :)

ATTENTION: 05/23 Anonymous hackers release PDF theory for dual firmware PS3; Could lead to 3.6x+ key decryption/CFW!

    05/23/2011 For Immediate Release:

    The beginning of dual-firmware PS3:

    http://www.ps3hax.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=678

The technique outlined in the .PDF will help people learn more about 3.6x firmwares.
The solution relies on the implementation of a second NOR/NAND Flash.
Some technical limitations have been identified. But time will help us to remove them.

The information in the document is still theoretical for the moment, however please post results from your testing.

We believe knowledge and information wants to be free.
Learn what you can and help contribute to making the PS3 scene a better place.

Esteemed PS3 Developer KaKaRoTo, has been working hard for two months on a little project, which he has just released to day, it is a professional Homebrew game, there is also a petition in the form of a letter addressed to Sony and if you chose, there is an option to donate, here is a quote from the Source:

The Humble Homebrew Collection is an initiative that aims to convince Sony to provide us with a legitimate and official way to create homebrew applications for the consoles that we own.

We are providing you with a free homebrew game that aims to be polished and look professionally made which includes 33 very good and addictive puzzle games. We’ve tried to make this homebrew games collection as good as possible so that even the anti-homebrew purists will be jealous of it.

Homebrew does not equal piracy, and this is proof of it. These games are all free and are released under the MIT license.

You are free to download these games for the platform of your choice, whether it’s on a jailbroken PS3, Linux, Windows, Mac or Android.

This Homebrew game collection is a port of Simon Tatham’s Portagle Puzzle Collection to the Playstation 3 system and it includes 33 puzzle games. More games are being written and this collection will only increase with time.

This is one of the first homebrew games that are released on the PS3 which are above the “proof of concept” status and is not yet another backup manager, FTP server or a port of an existing emulator.

This homebrew game is still in active development and will continue to receive regular updates. The TODO list has many items on it and it will continue to improve for your enjoyment.

The main purpose of this website it to serve as a petition against Sony’s unjust behavior towards their customers. You are encouraged to sign the petition, donate to the developers or you can simply download the games. The choice is yours.

If you wish to do so, you may also donate to the developers of this homebrew application, as well as to the EFF, which helps defend our rights in this digital age.

It is time to vote with your money, boycott Sony, request your legal homebrew and request your freedom and let them know that they have much to gain by giving us access to the homebrew that we deserve.

Let Sony know that, as a customer, you want homebrew games, you want to see the real purpose of the Copyright Law used properly: To encourage creativity and innovation. Let them know that, as a customer, you are willing to pay for quality homebrew and that if they wanted to, they can get a share of that money. After all, all they care about is money!

    Thank you

Robo Hobo has to be the greatest Emulator dev on the PS3, he has ported many Emulators to the PS3 and has just ported Fuse, a ZX Spectrum emulator.

Here is a version for testing, I’m calling it ‘Alpha 1′. There’s a lot of features in the emulator, and I’m not all that familiar with the spectrum to even begin testing them all. If you find any issues, or have any ideas for improvement, please post them.

If you are using a USB keyboard post any info about non-working keys (likely on non-US keyboards) and I’ll add them to the sdcell key map for future releases.

Please read the Readme.PS3 file in the zip for usage info and known issues.

    Readme:

FUSE: An unofficial Free Unix Spectrum Emulator PS3 Port

    Port Homepage: http://code.google.com/p/sdcell/

    Fuse Homepage: http://fuse-emulator.sourceforge.net/

    1.0.0.1: PS3 Alpha 1

    Release Notes:

This is a test release, not all features have been thoroughly tested. Please report any issues and feedback.

Issues should NOT be reported to the FUSE project, this port is unofficial and the fuse team will not be able to provide support.

    Usage:

Install the Fuse package on your jailbroken ps3 using normal means.

Either use FTP to store games on hard drive or place them on a FAT formated USB device.

Games should be either uncompressed, or stored as gzip archives. Zip files are not supported.

    Controls:

To get started press L2 (by default) to open the Fuse menu.

    Input Modes:

While running hold L3 or R3 for a brief period to change input modes, modes include joystick, mouse (the default) and keyboard.

While in joystick mode the game pad will act as a typical joystick.

While in keyboard mode the game pad can be used to send key presses as well as re-map the button usage for mouse mode.

While in mouse mode the left stick can be used to move the mouse cursor and buttons can be used to send key presses mapped in keyboard mode.

    On Screen Keyboard:

Use the left stick to move the cursor and select keys, press Cross to press the key.

To remap the keys, move the cursor into the upper-right corner and press Cross to toggle Mapping Mode, the button will be shaded green to indicate the mode is active.

Highlight any key on the keyboard and press the game pad button you wish to map to it, an image of the button will appear on the screen to indicate the change.

The changed mappings will be saved and reloaded on the next session.

The key mapping while the Fuse menu is open is fixed and may not be redefined.

    During the menu:

The following default controls are mapped while the menu is open, and currently can not be changed.

    Dpad: Navigate

L1-R1: Page Up and Page Down

    Cross: Select (Enter)

    Circle: Cancel (Escape)

    Square: Toggle (Space)

When attempting to change a setting, press Square to toggle it, pressing cross will save the settings and exit the menu.

In order to save your changes between sessions be sure to select ‘Save’ from the options menu.

    Physical Keyboards:

A USB keyboard (and mouse if needed) can be attached and used. However sdcell currently lacks key mappings for most keys not found on US keyboards.

If your keyboard has a key that produces no (or incorrect) input please leave an issue about the keyboard type and non-working key and they will be added in later versions.

    FUSE 1.0.0.1 PS3 Alpha 1:

    Custom Firmware

    3.41 Dongle
Thanks to Robo Hobo for his hard work!

I am a huge fan when it comes to any kind of PS3 mods, and sometimes the most simple of ideas simply looks hands down the best. A creative individual, Palle Olsen, was tired of his clunky PS3 wires disgracing his TV setup, so he decided to reorganize his wires in a sexy way.

The wiring was done with some superglue, double sided mounting tape, and designing with adobe illustrator – simple yet effective.

If interested you can see how he actually glued the wiring to the wall HERE.

According to a report by gaming website Gamasutra, Sony says PS Store is to be back up and running on May 24th. Something we have all been waiting for. Well, some of us. When it comes back we will receive our “Welcome Back” goodies. On top of that, we will also receive PS +! If you already have Plus, you will get 60 days of free plus, here is a quote from the source:

Barring any additional problems, Sony plans to bring the PlayStation Store back online next Tuesday, May 24, according to a memo sent to Sony’s game developer and publishing partners.

The company has sent a tentative publishing schedule to partners detailing when their games, expansions and other releases will become available to players. In the memo, obtained by Gamasutra, Sony unveils plans to do two content pushes per week for the next two weeks to catch up with the backlog of content.

“We thank you for your patience as we work to resume service of the PlayStation Store,” wrote PSN content manager Jack Osorno to developer partners.

The first push, set to coincide with the PlayStation Store’s reopening, will distribute content that was originally scheduled to publish on April 26. Three days later on the 27th, another round of games will go live, which were originally scheduled for May 3.

The following week, pushes will take place on May 31 and June 3, using content that originally had been planned to be spread over three weeks. At that point, the company will be back on schedule and, presumably, return to a single content push per week.

You have to be surprised at how such a big corporation can fail so badly at keeping their security up to date. It seems that the PSN online login page with password reset was exploited again by hackers. Though not a big as issue as the first, if you go to reset your PSN password all it asks for is your E-mail and date of birth. Hmm lets see, database stolen…they probably have this information….you see where its going.

As a result all webpage logins/password reset options are now offline. If you legitimately don’t remember your PSN logins, well seems like your out of luck for a while. Looks like everyone should have followed Japans decision eh?

Whats interesting about the whole situation that a website Nyleveia discovered this exploit and posted about it online (via Twitter), and contacted Sony to take a look at it. Sony took the tip, had the tweets removed and now have the reason for downtime as:

“Clarification: this maintenance doesn’t affect PSN on consoles, only the website you click through to from the password change email.”
“Fortunately we have got ISPs to release outstanding emails; unfortunately, a small amount of maintenance is required to improve this process”

This exploit was confirmed by a user over at Neogaf, you can see the details about it HERE.

President and CEO of Sony Sir Howard Stringer, has hit back at claims that they were to slow in informing users of the breech, stating

Most of these breaches go unreported by companies. Forty-three percent (of companies) notify victims within a month. We reported in a week. You’re telling me my week wasn’t fast enough?

he also said that Kazuo Hirai’s position as CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment is safe, here is a short quote from the source:

“This was an unprecedented situation,” Stringer told reporters on Tuesday, speaking publicly for the first time since the April breach.

“Most of these breaches go unreported by companies. Forty-three percent (of companies) notify victims within a month. We reported in a week. You’re telling me my week wasn’t fast enough?”

The attack, considered the biggest in Internet history, prompted the Japanese electronics giant to shut down its PlayStation Network and other services for close to a month.

Critics slammed the company for waiting up to a week before telling its customers of the attack and the possible theft of credit card information, prompting lawmakers and state attorneys general to launch investigations.

Two members of the U.S. House of Representatives sent a letter to Sony on Tuesday, urging it to respond to questions about its security strategy and reveal more details about the data breach.

In the letter, Representatives Mary Bono Mack of California and G.K. Butterfield of North Carolina said they had contacted Sony on April 29 but all of their questions had not been answered by the company. The lawmakers asked Sony to respond to questions by May 25.

Sony said it expected to face monetary charges from the break-in but was still assessing the damage.

“There’s a charge for the system being down … a charge for identity theft insurance,” Stringer said. “The charges mount up, but they don’t add up to a number we can quantify just yet.”

One expert estimated that costs from the break-in could reach as high as $2 billion.

On the 29th of April, a United States House Of Representatives Sub Committee, sent SCEA Chairman Kazuo Hirai a letter asking questions regarding the PSN outage, Kazuo responded to that letter, but it seems that those answers weren’t enough, Mary Bono Mack, Chairman of that Sub Committee has sent yet more questions to Kazuo, here is the letter:

    May 17, 2011

    Mr. Kazuo Hirai
    Chairman
    Sony Computer Entertainment America
    919 East Hillsdale Blvd.
    Foster City, CA  99404
    Dear Mr. Hirai:

We write today to follow up on requests we submitted in our letter to you on April 29, 2011.  In that letter, we made several queries regarding the data breach experienced by Sony Corporation’s Playstation Network last month.  We thank you for providing a written response and for making Sony representatives available to speak with us in person on May 3, 2011.

At the time you sent the above referenced response and at the time of the briefing, Sony was unable to answer several of the queries we posed in our April 29, 2011, letter.  Now that more time has passed, enabling further investigation of the incident, and particularly in light of the news that Sony restarted its Playstation Network on May 14, 2011, we submit these questions to you again, as well as questions regarding the discovery of a breach impacting Sony Online Entertainment customers.  We request answers no later than May 25, 2011.

    1. Has your investigation revealed any additional information on what customer information was specifically obtained, and whether the information was obtained from all accounts or a portion of the accounts?

    2. When Sony representatives briefed our staff on May 3, 2011, they indicated that personal information from all 77 million accounts had been breached in some form.  In your May 3, 2011, response to our letter you indicated not every piece of information in each account had been stolen, but that some personal information on all 77 million had been stolen.  Has your investigation revealed what information was taken from each individual account?  Do you have any additional information that would call for revising the number of affected accounts?

    3. Has your investigation revealed how the breach occurred?

    4. Your initial reply to us on May 3 indicated the attack may have been coordinated and directed by the group of cyber criminals named “Anonymous”.  Have you identified those who are responsible for the breach, including any individual(s)?

    5. When our staffs met on May 3, 2011, your representatives indicated Sony could not confirm whether credit card information had been breached but, at the time, there was no evidence to indicate that such information had been breached.  Has your investigation revealed any additional information regarding whether credit card information was indeed taken?

    6. Sony discovered on May 1 that an additional breach of its network occurred.  This breach reportedly involved approximately 25 million user accounts at Sony Online Entertainment.

    a. Was this breach the same as, related to, or unrelated to the Sony Playstation Network breach?  Have you identified the responsible party?

    b. When did the breach occur?  If there was a delay in the discovery of the Sony Online Entertainment breach, what was the reason for the delay?

    c. How many user accounts were impacted?

    d. What information was taken?

    e. When did Sony notify its Sony Online Entertainment users that their accounts had been breached?

    7. What steps has Sony taken or does Sony plan to take to mitigate the effects of these breaches on its customers?

    8. Regarding both the Sony Playstation Network and the Sony Online Entertainment servers, you indicated in your May 3 response steps Sony is implementing to prevent future such breaches. Do you believe these additional security measures will prevent future breaches or illegal intrusions?  Why did you not have these measures in place prior to the breach(es)?

    9. Did Sony have a policy in place at the time of either breach addressing data security and data retention practices?  If not, why not?  If so, what are those practices and does Sony plan any changes in its policies as a result of this breach?

    10. In today’s Wall Street Journal, Chief Executive Howard Stringer said Sony “can’t guarantee the security of its videogame network…in the ‘bad new world’ of cyber crime”.  Please explain what he meant, as well as the potential impact on consumers.

Thank you for your attention to and assistance in this matter.

    Sincerely,

    Mary Bono Mack
    Chairman

cyberskunk has released two very useful PKG’s, one called Boot OtherOS++, which as the name suggests, boots OtherOS and OtherOS prep Tool, which prepares your PS3 HDD for installing Linux, here is a quote from the source:

OtherOS Prep Tool is used to prepare your system vflash and install petitboot ready to install Linux. IT DOES NOT INSTALL LINUX. If you can use PS3MFW Builder 0.2, then you can add OtherOS++ support to your Rebug CFW, the rebug guys have released a .tcl task file, here is a tutorial on how to use it:

    CREATE OTHEROS++ ENABLED REBUG FW:
If you want to OtherOS++ enable REBUG we have provided the .tcl task file for patching the Lv1 Hyperviser with PS3MFW Builder 0.2. It is the EXACT patch_lv1.tcl from gitbrew.org minus the lv1 memory mapping as it is already patched in REBUG. We can not take any credit for the task file or PS3MFW Builder 0.2 Portable. We have provided them at the bottom of this post for your convenience as we didn’t fell releasing a new PUP just to add these patches was necessary.

1: Add the .tcl file to the tasks folder of PS3MFW Builder 0.2. It will appear as OtherOS++ Lv1 Hypervisor patches for REBUG in the task list.

2: Deselect ALL tasks except OtherOS++ Lv1 Hypervisor patches for REBUG.

3: Use REBUG firmware as your input firmware.

4: Select output directory and filename.

    5: Click on Build MFW

6: Rename output PUP to PS3UPDAT.PUP and install on the PS3.

    OR

1: Download PS3MFW Bulder 0.2 Portable Win32 from the bottom of this post

(All of the tasks have been pre-selected for you).

    2: Click on ps3mfw.exe

3: Use REBUG firmware as your input firmware.

4: Select output directory and filename.

    5: Click on Build MFW

6: Rename output PUP to PS3UPDAT.PUP and install on the PS3.

Your new REBUG PUP will have the same OtherOS++ compatibility as OtherOS++ CFW.

    UPDATE 1:

Official Sony reply to those said this program sucks:

I’m really sorry tha[t] there is nothing there that you want. We’ve tried really hard to put together a list of high quality BD games, rather than simply offering cheaper PSN titles. The average metacritic rating for these games is over 84%, so these are high quality games. Unfortunately with a user base of 77m people, it is really hard to offer something for everyone.

A couple of days ago, Sony released Firmware 3.61 and slowly the Playstation Network came back up, while all that was great, Sony didn’t give us any real information on when the PSN network would resume as normal, so today via the PS Blog, SCEA/SCEE have answered some questions:

Q: So what exactly is working right now?
A: Sign-in for PlayStation Network and Qriocity (including the resetting of passwords), online gameplay for PS3 and PSP, playback of rental video content on PS3 (if within rental period), Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity on PS3 (for current subscribers), access to services such as Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, and MLB.tv, “Friends” category on PS3 (including Friends List, Chat Functionality, Trophy Comparison, etc), in-game leaderboards, and PlayStation Home.

Q: I’m having trouble changing my password/I forgot which email I used on my account/I used a fake email to set up my account.
A: Click here for a set of tips on resetting your password. If you’ve gone through the process and are waiting for an email from us, please note that the very large number of requests has caused certain ISPs to slow the rate at which recipients get emails from us. Please be patient as the systems work through the backlog.

Q: The PlayStation Store hasn’t updated since April 19th. When can I download digital games that were planned to be released since then?
A: To date, three Tuesday publishes were missed, which included items like Under Siege and the MotorStorm Apocalypse demo. Rest assured that you won’t miss any of this great content. To catch up on the large amount of material, we’ll be publishing to the PlayStation Store multiple times per week once commerce functionality is restored.  We will update the PlayStation.Blog with information on timing of the Store restoration, as well as the full list of new content as each publish occurs.

Q: How will PlayStation Plus members be affected by the PSN downtime? A number of games/items were slated to go live or come down on April 26th.
A: We will be picking back up with the PlayStation Plus content calendar where we left off to ensure that you won’t miss out on anything.

Q: Sucker Punch has indicated that they will extend the inFAMOUS 2 beta. Any details?
A: Sucker Punch is evaluating extending the inFAMOUS 2 beta, as well as expanding its scope. Stay tuned for more details here in the coming days.

Q: Is anything special planned for the SOCOM 4 multiplayer community?
A: Zipper will announce details on activities to re-engage fans of SOCOM 4 who have patiently waited to play online.

Q: What about the Call of Duty: Black Ops Double XP weekend that was missed while PSN was down?
A: We have been in discussions with our friends at Treyarch, and they have ensured that all Call of Duty: Black Ops fans will get an extra Double XP event as soon as PSN comes back online. We don’t have details on timing just yet, but look forward to an announcement as soon as we have news.

Q: How can I redeem the Welcome Back offer that was mentioned by Kazuo Hirai? What’s in it?
A: Hang tight – we’ll be announcing all the details soon.

Q: How can I sign up for the Debix AllClear ID Plus protection announced last week?
A: More details are coming soon.

Q: When will the PlayStation.Blog start talking about games again?
A: Tomorrow! Thank you for bearing with us as our role changed over the past few weeks. We’ll be once again talking games every day leading up to E3, which is just a few short weeks away.
