Update: eBay pulled listing due to issue, but the listing is now up at new URL here.
Well after 3 years of working on it, I am finally ready to unveil my second PS3 portable which I am titling “Pirate’s PS3 Water-cooled Portable/Laptop”. As the name suggests this is a water-cooled PS3 in a portable form, fully equipped with its own reservoir, pump and radiator. This PS3 laptop is for sale, so pictures, videos, features and eBay link all the Read More button!
Features in this portable include:
- Water cooled with easy accessible reservoir
- HD: 720p/1080i screen (via HDMI)
- 4x USB
- 500 gb HDD
- External PSU
- Built in keyboard
- Built in speakers with volume controls with 2.5mm headphone jack.
- The stock PS3 was a 40gb SKU (there was no PS3 slim when I started the project).
- Dimensions are 16.75”x13”x2.5” (16.75”x13”x3.5”with lid closed)
- Weighs ~15lbs.
The case was all constructed from scratch. It features an aluminum base plate, and the rest of the material used was sintra/komatex. The case was routed via CNC machines with designs created in Adobe Illustrator.
The questions some of you may be asking why water-cool the PS3? The reason for water-cooling the system was to redesign the cooling to fit in a small case (which is significantly thinner than previous portable I made). Water-cooling the PS3 allowed me to get rid of the clunky heatsinks which was responsible for cooling stock PS3s. Only 4x40mm fans were used in cooling the entire system.
Another question I often get is why does a PS3 game/CD go backwards? That is because it was the only way to get the drive to fit inside the case without having to manually extend the PS3 bluray cable/ribbon.
I did not follow any tutorial when creating this, nor will I be providing one – it was done all for fun, and experimentation (why is why it took so long -.-). For those interested you can check out my work log of this project HERE. Also a shout out to the members at Overclock.net for helping me find many of the components, research and techniques I used to make this project possible. If you’re interested in tackling a project such as this feel free to ask on the forums and I will be more than glad to guide you in the right direction.
This PS3 Laptop/Portable is on sale at eBay, so if you’re interested, there’s a link below to the bidding. If you wish to buy it now, contact me through the forums (here) and we can talk from there
. A percentage of the funds (minus costs) will proceed to relief efforts for the Joplin, Missouri tornado and rest will go to server/renovations to PS3Hax.net
Thanks for looking, let me know what you guys think

Nice but it does not have a nice sleek look to it and water cooled is a waste of money and time. Not to mention the upkeep. Totally understand for the need and ease of portability but it must come with a sleek finish and nice layout. Other than that the concept is right on.

Everything inside of it looks pretty crowded. I'd be afraid of that thing overheating.

But it still looks great. I love the PS3HAX.NET sign on the side of it.

For form factor you did very good, but i don't like the overall layout, its too clumsy and bulky. You did very, very good though; thoroughly intelligent design executed to the nines.

Pirate you did F u c k e n Great!! the ****s sick dude,i cant beleave you started your project in 08...wow!!! 3 year stress project lol

It is neat...not exactly my style, but still neat...and I bet it would be very appealing if I was always on the road (of course, all that water cooling would make me a bit nervous every time I turned it on after a bumpy flight).
It is just too bad about the firmware; it loses a lot of portability when you have to lug around your game disks as well.

Looks nice, but it's too bulky/crowded on the inside for me.. The current firmware on the system is also a thumbs down for people who like to experiment.. Also, that water cooling makes me cringe, because just think, if it ever leaks the entire thing is history..BOOM!
But over-all, you did a nice job.

Amazing job. Cheers. The Keyboard is taken from a mac

this looks sick mate! nice work!
also with water colled there is a very slim chance of this over heating thats why water cooled stuff is used lol
but i think you really let it down by putting 3.60 on it....
1. if you had it on 3.41 or below or even 3.50 then it would have had more capabilities and a wider range of people may have purchased it.
2. if it was on a lower firmware then you could have sold it for so much more.... however in saying that $1,000 with 9 hours to go is pretty good going lol
personally i would love a portable hacked ps3!

When you factor the time and expense that went into it, $1000 is actually rather low. He probably should have put a longer timer on the ebay auction...there are people who won't even know about this until the auction is over.

Thats kind of cool , but how can you do maintenance on the watercooling kit? The liquid will need to be changed every six to twelve months and I dont see any way to do that.
PS. Is vomiting (Getting sick) a good thing in america. Where I come from if we say something is sick its not good. I see some people saying its sick. Unless they are saying its bad.

Very nice (and long term) DIY project Pirate
)
There was no way of integrating any kind of laptop battery to juice it for 2 or 3 hours to make it completely portable ?
(I know, the FAT uses a lot of watts

The only real criticism I have of it is the cable at the back linking base to screen. If possible I would have tried to use internal ribbons rather than exterior cables?

what a great job you have done.

it's great to see just how far ppl are willing to go to mod there ps3's
you have inspired me to think about doing this myself
this might be a good reason to buy a 3rd ps3.
can i ask is it just a standard pc monitor you used?
all the best with your auction hope you get what you deserve for it

03:39 PM
It's nice, but I agree about needing more polish to it, and take out the LCS. Also for the current $ tag on ebay, I'd have slapped on a 1080p screen.
$1500+ with 9 days left, so people are interested in tech mods like this; good for you. I myself can't value the unit even that high, but the fact that others can makes it a job well done.

Thats all i have to say after seeing how much the first project sold for $8,000 .. with that said to pirate you have to keep this up ,you can make a serious amount of money with people who like to collect rare stuff, like what you have created .PS i cant believe 1st portable ps3 sold for 8G damn
I believe if you can get someone to mold you a case of your creation it will save you time + if you can find a quicker way to build these .All i see is $$$$ ,you should go for it = keep them comming ..Good luck with this ,al i see it big money in the end !!

I was thinking just a thought ( PIRATE ) to improve the "power supply look" on the wires. They have that rubber shrink tube type stuff = not plastic. You put wires inside the tube ,cut tube to size u need . Then apply heat to the rubber tube, this will shrink the rubber tube to tighten around wires. I was in the Trades ,i am a carpenter, but no more tnx to getting cancer in 06, but it is gone 4 now . I think this would make the wires look much better instead if the possable plastic ties around them
