Updates follow at read more link. If you didn’t know already, OtherOS is back on the PS3. A developer using the name Geoffrey Levand, has released a dual booting Custom Firmware, what this will let us do, is boot between GameOS and OtherOS, below is a quote from the source:
Features:
Into HV integrated OtherOS bootloader loader (compatible with OtherOS bootloader on 3.15)
OtherOS bootloader is booted directly from HV, no GameOS is involved.
Process of booting OtherOS bootloader loader is very similar to 3.15 method
Booting Linux from HDD/USB/BD/Network
Linux with GameOS rights
Full access to all HV SS services (Dispatcher Manager) from GameOS or Linux
Full access to all System Manager services
Ability to create/modify/remove repository nodes in LPAR 1 (e.g. with ps3dm-utils or ps3hvc-utils).
This ability gives you much power over the whole system because many layers of PS3 use repository nodes to exchange information.
Enabled QA mode in Update Manager
Downgrading without USB dongle or Service Mode
Ability to deactivate/activate HDD/VFLASH encryption (e.g. with ps3stor-utils)
Support for ps3-utils. You can flash new OtherOS bootloader from Linux e.g.Notes:
Tested 3.41 and 3.55 on PS3 Slim with Gentoo and Debian Squeeze but should work on PS3 Fat without problems
Bug reports are welcome, send it please to geoffrey.levand@mail.ruWork in progress:
Creating OtherOS partitions directly on HDD (not VFLASH)
Permanently disabling HDD/VFLASH encryption
Mapping of HTAB with R/W permission
SYSCON access from LPAR 2
FreeBSD support
Installing OtherOS bootloader
Tested ONLY on PS3 models with VFLASH
During deleting of VFLASH regions GameOS will ask you to reinstall firmware, don’t do it, just press PS3 button and continue
I use petitboot as OtherOS bootloader. You could use a different one.
The following order of steps is important
Delete VFLASH region 6
Delete VFLASH region 5
Create VFLASH region 5
Create VFLASH region 6
Install OtherOS bootloader on VFLASH with “Install OtherOS”Booting OtherOS bootloader
Run “Boot OtherOS”
Reboot GameOS with “Reboot”Creating a VFLASH partition for Linux
Notes:Works ONLY on PS3 models with VFLASH
Warning: All your HDD data will be lost, so make a backup
I’m currently working on a solution for PS3 models with NAND flash
Resize VFLASH (creates a 40GB free space on VFLASH, if you need more then feel free to recompile it)
Reboot GameOS
Create VFLASH region 7Installing Linux with petitboot
Installing Gentoo GNU/Linux from a Unix/Linux System
Partitioning with fdisk
Notes:
I used petitboot to install Debian and Gentoo on VFLASH
I used fdisk to partition ps3vflashh
Make sure you create a swap partition
Creating a ready to use Linux distribution images is a work in progressBooting Linux with petitboot
Notes:USB driver in petitboot has problems on PS3 Slim. The problem lies in Linux USB driver.
Currently i’m trying to fix this problem in Linux kernel
I temporarily use my boot_linux.sh script to boot a Linux installed on VFLASH from petitboot

Quote from PS3MFW
We are proud of the scene, and we want to congratulate all the devs who made this possible, Graf Chokolo of course (don’t forget to donate to him if you didn’t already, he needs it to fight his legal battle with $ony) and the newcomer “Geoffrey Levand” (probably a fake name) who worked closely with Graf and continued his work after Graf was forced to stop (because Sony thinks it owns you and your console) as well as a thank you to our friends at gitbrew.org for helping and providing a safe haven for these talented developers to work.

There is already a tutorial for you to do this in the tutorial section. All they did was take the liberty of making the required pup for you.
Edit: I apologize. I didn't read thorough enough. It is a much easier way of installing Linux then the method I have seen in the tutorial section.

messed up my gconf2 yesterday so i have to fix that first before I will try this. (vork out of memory with a 240kb file ...)

I have a feeling where the original inormation is comming from, I hope he is very carefull and stops with using the word "guys" because it points to someone...
and maybe the dev can add to his work in progess: find a way to enable the RSX again like before FW 2.10. That would make my year

This is 99% Graf's work and I see no acknowledgements of this. All this guy has really done is put Graf's hard work into a CFW and bragged about being "better" than graf and geo on graf's blog.

Is this a dual boot
- GameOS XMB
- GameOS Linux
or a dual boot- GameOS XMB
- OtherOS
The last approach is just silly, in my opinion. In case answer is 1, What will it take to make a multiboot?05-04-2011

is this the same guy that worked for Sony and said that Sony was committed to supporting Linux on Phat models and wouldn't be disabled in a future update? if so then I thnk this shows atleast how committed he is...

EDIT: note: I didn't see the original post changed with instructions added. So the info below is obsolete. I'll start with a fresh install..... messed up my gconf2 anyway
I was hoping an a petitboot bootscreen at startup to choose between Linux and GameOS but it kicks me right to GameOS after reboot.
lvl2 v9 crashes now, I will look into it. It is CFW 3.55.
Only difference I see is a PSN icon I have never seen before. Maybe it deleted my PSN account info and I have to fill in my old info again.
I don't think it is a sign PSN will be back up soon
Edit: I had to re-install lvl2-v9 and BoototherOS. after that lvl2-v9 only showed the option to install debian so I think it killed my internal install by changing the partition table. Booting from rescue usb stick now to check what happenend...
edit2: my 43 Gb partition is still there. Let's see what the kboot.conf has to say. maybe I just have to add the line pointing to the internal install...
Yes, my internal is back when I start lvl2-v9. Editing the boot.conf did it.

Please realize that ANY CFW requiring survey completion to download is FAKE!
Any CFW that requires you to download a program to download it is FAKE!

When you decided to use "F" in your post, your post and opinion became moot, you see you made yourself look childish and immature by resorting to swearing, which the letter "F" in the context in which you use it symbolizes.

i have a few questions......
#1 i would like to know if i can for sure downgrade to 3.41 using this new daul boot, i'm on 3.55?
#2 if i install this, will it format my hdd, i got a OG phat 60 gig with a 250 hdd in it now, i want to create the linux partition on the original 60 gig hdd, switch it out to get all my goodies on the 250 gig.
i know the partition will format the hdd, but after its all done, can i switch out the 60 and put the 250 gig back in there without it having the partition and reformat happen to that hdd?
#3 if yes to 1 and 2, if i downgrade the 60 gig partitioned hdd from 3.55 to 3.41 and its the one to get reformated (again), if i switch the 60gig to the 250 gig after the downgrade, will that 250gig hdd get reformated too?
i know alot of my homebrew won't work after the downgrade after switching to the 250gig, but i got alot of bought psn games and content on that 250 gig, if they get erased, i can't get them back unless i update to ofw.
this is why i want to do the otheros install on the 60 gig hdd, to leave my bigger one alone. if anyone can answer these for me, i will be greatful and give you some props or marijuana.
i hope you understand what i'm trying to do and ask here. the lesser hdd used for the install process, the other untouched (in terms of formating, i don't have a ext hdd at the moment to backup and restore data or this would not be an issue at all).
thanks.

i don't understand why using homebrew from cfw 3.55 wouldn't work when switching back to ofw3.55 unless it needs the lv2 patcher app ran before running.
all the cfw3.55 homebrew is signed, ofw3.55 see's it as officailly signed by sony. i wouldn't bet on every single thing working, but i don't see no reasons why they wouldn't work either.

I have done it also by the guide, as soon as I start boot otheros it goes back to the GameOS.
Edit: formatted the drive with all old partitions removed (totally clean) and now I am able to get petitboot running and quiting (slim users remove usb keyboard after you hit Enter for Boot Gameos or any other thing, otherwise it hangs) but when I want to install the 40Gb partition it fails.... I will look into it further
I have installed Debian on my internal before so I know a little what is going on but this I don't understand. I will look into it as soon as I have time (and that will not be before the weekend)
Note that this way to install Linux is new for us all so it will be difficult to find answers to questions.

Also the remark about first CFW then installing homebrew and then reverting back to OFW, wouldn't it be possible to create homebrew which can install signed homebrew from USB/DVD? That's the only mistake they didn't make and learned from the PSP by not showing signed content which is located on an external device.. LOL..
I wonder if homebrew that's signed and runs on OFW 3.55 would still run if updated to OFW 3.60 anyone already tried that
Also would you need to update first to OFW3.55 before running the CFW or can you just directly update from OFW3.15 to CFW3.55?

A few things I want to know before installing are:
How fast is Linux using this method?
What are the brick %?
Is this CFW even any good?
How would I go about backing up my data so I don't lose anything?
I personally enjoy using Rebug but would like to use my PS3 as a comp since my comp is now fried chicken.

This is great! Thank you! My ultimate goal is to make my PS3 into a TV front-end for streaming from my Linux VDR Server. I really pray and hope that the RSX Graphics becomes 100% usable someday in the near future.
What was your experience running XBMC on Debian/Ubuntu 10.04 with this dual-boot cfw?
There are some nice releases of XBMC that support Linux TV apps such as MythTV, VDR and Tvheadend.
The future of running Linux on the PS3 is looking good! :D

everything goes ok but after create vflash region 7 I get the normal warning I have to push the PS button or start/select at the same time. I hit PS again and it goes back to XMB, no format screen for harddisk....
EDIT: I think something is wrong with Create Region7 program. When I run it it doesn't go to the format screen afterwards. So I changed it to the one provided with graf_chokolo his tools and now it does format.

Now all I want to say is the guide really s*cks !!
It only gives some info about the creating and deleting but afterwards I am left in the dark. First the "create Vflash Region 7" doesn't work and when I replace it with graf his version it does work. Now I am able to start petitboot again but because there is no debian installed it is not there in Petitboot.
I will test what happens if I install lvl2-v9 again. maybe that will help something. But I think I will switch to my own old guide because this is a road to nowhere for me....
also no info about how to boot with graf his kernel so the ps3vflash partitions can be recognized. Just totally incomplete....
And the links to Gentoo and Debian and Fdisk are a joke? I can find them myself. Why doesn't he give info about what to do next after the creation of the partitions?
I will boot from my rescue usb stick to configure the partition and to see if I can install from there with the info from the links...
Edit: and I remember I have burned a cd-image with graf kernel. I have to put that one in ofcourse.... I hve to sleep first, I start to forget things. Not good

As for a PS1 emulator on Linux, it'd have some advantages over the PS3's PS1 emulation (good model/video upscaling, ability to use cheats on games, etc...).

My question is "Does this version of linux allow you to use emulators like ps1,
N64, or any others like Dolphin?" I saw in an earlier post that the graphics is restricted, but on an other site I read that this version of linux unlocks it. Sorry for the noob question, just new to Linux and the hardware inside of the Ps3. If no, is it because this Linux doesn't have the drivers for the graphics card? Thank you for any info
05-05-2011
02:41 AM
Still, the emulators will run under Linux, but they aren't optimized for the PS3 (standard it will run everything on the PPU instead of also using the SPU's), and people are already converting those emulators to run under GameOS.. Since you have to use a CFW for Linux, you might as well use the GameOS version opposed to the linux version..

Ok so I'm not new to this and I too am having the issue inwhich I cant find the update. Im
on help and before you ask I already renamed the the pup and created the proper folders PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP but get "No applicable update available"
. I should also note I had the paths set on root of my d1 with OFW and on the root of my flash drive with this CFW and neither were recognized. So now I'm wondering if the fact that i already have Ubuntu installed on my hdd and have actually used some of the function in the HV debugging pkg. has something to do with it
lol anyway maybe its for the best whatever ill keep looking at it .
S/N: I have a 320 GB slim and it seems to match what scristopher has listed and looking at gitbrews instructions it says something about unloading the usb driver ? anyone got a clue?.................and last but not least is it only when creating the vflash7 region that it wipes your HDD?

I have looked into graf his bible but am not that smart (just maybe blind?) I can find out if something is in it about this. I remember graf said his bible was 90% complete and I think the RSX makes part of the missing 10%. They have fixed the missing HV check so "all" we have to do is remove their fix?
Bad thing: their is a big hole between 2.0 and 3.55 and Sony has made a lot of changes to their FW's the last 3 years.
So maybe the dev that worked close with graf (hai Sony

Ok, I have finally succeeded in creating the partition again.
The drive is already partitioned and formatted with the first time and it won't do it again. It just creates ps3vflashh.

Problem was the guide misses a thing. If we create Vflash region 7 we have to delete it first.
So before resizing first delete Vflash region 7 !!!
if you don't see ps3vflashh at debian disk detection but only ps3vflasha with 43,2 Gb you have to quit and run Create Region 7 again (first time= format, second time not). This time ps3vflashh will be there if everything is allright
Hope this helps some people

Simple answer is most of them don't own even one PS1 game? Not occusing anyone, that is why my answer was they don't want to insert a PS1 disk at their PS3 drive. I always try to write in a political correct way
running an emulator without owning the system rom is even illegal.
(now that is why I own about 150 consoles and home computers from the past

use my guide I translated from German to english (and added some usefull info myself) http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=22329
(credits to original german writer)
Do everything starting from this part:
***before starting petitboot to install debian insert the burned Debian PS3 ISO disk (debian_ps3_netinst.iso) first to let it be recognized by petitboot*** (so everything after it).
My old guide uses ps3vflashg, this one uses ps3vflashh, keep that in mind. Ps3vflashh is saver, ps3vflashg was a protected partition and not right to use.
And for everybody: you need an install on an external device otherwise you are not able to install graf his kernel to the debian install at internal !!!!!So first create an install on external !!!
Otherwise starting debian with standard kernel can't recognize the ps3vflash regions and can't boot !!
Note: for some reason I never get the install finish successfully at internal with graphical environment. I always install base and afterwards Gnome from terminal (add "single" to bootoptions Petitboot to get telinit 1 (SU/root) terminal)

I have a problem. I have sucessfully rezised ps3vflash 7. And I have partitioned it with fdisk. It shows up as 42.9 GB in petitboot, and there I can even mount it and use the disk.
But When I try to install any linux distro, and I get to disk partitions. Then the ps3vflashh does not show up as a drive. Only the GameOS disk does...
Anyone knows what I'm doing wrong here?
05-06-2011
03:13 AM
You can't just put Ubuntu 10.10 install disk for PS3 (for example) in your drive at petitboot because that one contains standard kernel making Ubuntu doesn't see the ps3vflash.
so once again: Only graf his kernel is able to recognize ps3vflash, original kernels are able to recognize partitions on external usb devices but not ps3vflash.
How did you use fdisk to partition? and how does your petitboot show the disk size because petitboot only shows the info from kboot.conf and fdisk needs to run from within linux?
From within an working install with graf kernel it is possible to install another base system on a new ps3vflashh partition with chroot and add graf his kernel to it. I will try that later today with Gentoo first
You need to have more partitions for this. I made 3 14Gb partitions so I can install Aros also

I'm on it. I used fdisk to make 4 partitions.

1. 100MB Bootable Fat
2. 2000MB Linux Swap
3. 20GB Linux
4. 20GB Linux
(the fat partition I guess it's not needed, but it was something Graf recomended for later...)
Then I formated the two linux partitions with ext3.
I'm burning the debian_ps3_netinst.iso now..
In the partition process it asked me to make a powerpc boot partition, so I used the 100MB first parition. the 2. still for swap and the third I formated to ext4. The forth I guess I will try to put Gentoo

Not sure what is causing the problem, first I thought it would be a debian ftp mirror problem but it hangs often at install and not download. Second I thought it would be a problem with the partition as ps3vflashg (I used in previous internal installs) was protected in a way, but I have the same problems on ps3vflashh.

I have installed Debian and using Debian I installed the Ubuntu base system on a new partition and I am able to boot in Ubuntu Single mode. So far so good. Works on later 40 gigs and 80 gig units as well as slims. Any backwards compatible unit and the launch 40 gig have 256 nand flash. No need for vflash so you cant extend it and partition it since it is not on a hard drive. I still think the pup is unnecessary as anyone that can use MFW builder has already probably made this pup. I've used my own mfw for a while now
Well I begin my attempts. I already have debian and all the necessities on my external so time to make a backup and do this. I really want Ubuntu but for now I will go with Debian or Gentoo. I hope this all carries on. I don't even see a need in a 3.60 cfw because as soon as PSN goes online there will be a new firmware. It just sucks because as of now we are stuck on 3.55. In a few months keeping Linux will only be for the diehards like it was when 3.21 took it away.

One more question, I see 3 different firmware versions, does it matter which I install? (something on the lines of why 3 firmware if not the latest?)
EDIT: In regards to the graphics driver these bits of info looks interesting:
05-07-2011

might work with some modifications... that never happened... as for the firmware versions, use the one correspondent to your firmware if you have a 3.55 use a 3.55 if you have a 3.41 go for the 3.41... **** i just want my ps3 slim...
05-07-2011

05-07-2011

i wouldn't say soon but i say its coming... not in month not in two probably not in six... but it will come...
as for your firmware... just install official 3.41 or 3.55 which one you prefer, and overwrite it using thses firmwares on the main page... just make sure you don't have any dlc or something, cause it becomes unplayable...

Second, several packages need to be installed by the softwarecenter. Like the AR command whick is part of aptitude-desktop. Don't remember them all. Third: i switched from several guides and help-pages, I had 15 explorer tabs open to find all info I needed. Most of them repair info. and it's also a process I don't want to repeat to write what I did. Another OS is waiting.
But both Debian and Ubuntu work on internal !! Don't know if I will make it multiboot from startup. Using Reboot from the GameOS works fine for first.
Just use your logic. You need a working install with graf kernel, from there with chroot and mount taking ownership of the partition you want to install Ubuntu. Install base system bootstrapped, copy some things from your working install (like graf his kernel) and install ubuntu-desktop. Nautilus can be a big friend in the process. The Ubuntu 10.10 PS3 cd can be handy to. I used it somewhere with the install, don't know but it was with the base install and I pointed somewhere to the cdrom (make mountpoint first) with file:// in stead of http://ubuntu.whatever. The rest of the install was a net install.
Now I have to find out if I can use graf his deb files on a non-standard kernel with Amiga File System added. (Aros !!)
Tocobo: I don't think Yellowdog will alow us to make use of the 3,2 Ghz dedicated ram. The Hypervisor blocks it by not accepting 0 for full ram access anymore. and Hypervisor is kernel level. So unless Yellowdog uses an own hacked kernel, like graf also does, they can't change the Hypervisor behavior.

Hi guys,
I got to the step of running the Install_OtherOS pkg file but nothing happens, I tried putting otheros.bld (it's kboot) on the PS3/OtherOS folder but it doesn't work.
I'm running a Phat PS3 CECHK06, unless kboot doesn't work?
Can someone help?
@Oozic: I'm no programmer, just wondering if those stuff I posted above could be used as a base to develop the RSX driver, instead of writing one from scratch.

but I have looked into it also, and found the info (http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=11844) about the HyperVisor accepting the zero-value before FW 2.10 and Sony has blocked that. And I think that is the most important thing to do. First make the HyperVisor accept the zero-value again so the GPU 256 mb will be available together with the 700 mhz normal ram.
Now you know why Sony is a little mad at graf_chokolo for Reverse Engineering the HyperVisor. They really want to protect the RSX part and don't want us to use it in stead of GameOS.
Did you start Reboot after Install_OtherOS? Reboot will get you to Petitboot.

Need to know what step went wrong.
Without reading the new docu my advice would be to install Debian to an external device like USB stick (8 Gb minimum) first. You need it for installing graf his kernel to internal later.
But i have not looked into the new information. maybe there is an easier way now to install at internal.

05-07-2011

Maybe only using an external device to install Ubuntu to one 43Gb partition is also possible. I think it can but it is not the way I did it.
Debian boot cd has to be inserted before petitboot starts. This makes Petitboot recognize the cd and you get the options install/expert/rescue.

@Sewershark: I think you're using the one with 256NAND which is not supported.
EDIT: It works, followed the set of instructions I posted above just that you have to delete vflash7 before you resize.
Also, other things I did differently was to perform a full format first before doing the steps, use petitboot and my ethernet cable is now plugged in during the install.
Ok do I need a USB keyboard or something? I see the install screen but the controllers doesn't work.
Also, I see a selection and so I select install?

Tokobo, i get only black screen if i boot normally , if i keep power button pressed i will enter setup menu, but i am unable to do any operation from there ,(format rebuild , update)
i always get "an error occurred during the format operation 8002f271"
ps3 hdd is in working order (fully tested on a pc)
i am afraid this firmware among being incompatible with a ps3 nand256 it will brick it as it did with mine

Hey guys, this is slightly off topic, but I noticed after I installed the CFW and partitioned the 40GB for the Linux, I keep getting the "registering of trophies could not be completed. The game will exit now." Any ideas how to fix this?
05-08-2011
04:26 AM
Wasn't there also a fix for waninkokos firmware or does service mode from a dongle override certain parts of the firmware? Maybe that could work here.

04:34 AM
Tokobo,Hi,i want to know if you are having my same issue, try installing resident evil 5 on the internal hdd and tell me what happens to you
05-08-2011
04:38 AM
I don't own RE5 unfortunately.
Anyone has a fix for the trophies thing yet?
05-08-2011
04:43 AM
If so, put it back, go in service mode and use "rebuild data system" (or something named like that)
05-08-2011
04:45 AM
And if I didn't? D:
Do I boot back into service mode and rebuild?
EDIT: How do I boot into service mode now? I keep seeing petitboot.
05-08-2011
05:06 AM
at last i was able to make service mode work, i am formatting the internal drive from it (estimated time 3:30 hours ) will try to reflash after that with ofw 3.55 of course if it will ever complete the format procedure that at the moment is at 6%
************* [ - Post Merged - ] *************
were you unable to get in service mode even by trying this ?
http://ps3.dashhacks.com/2010/12/04/...3-card-reader/
do everything as it says except downgrading.
the few hours that i kept dual cfw on my system resident evil 5 was unable to install ,other games worked ,did you checked if you had the same issue ?
my advice wait and see what happens to my ps3 before bricking yours
05-08-2011

I'm using a later 80GB model without backwards compatibility and no card reader =(
EDIT: I got to recovery mode and rebuild the database but still unable to register trophies, any solutions? (Yes I didn't backup my trophies from home).
I have no care about what happens to my trophies, just fixing this issue (which includes wiping all of them out) so I can play my games would be nice =)

05-09-2011
11:04 AM
The petitboot page shows a way, don't really know how to explain it.
Btw, as both OoZic and me have found a bug/issue. We are unable to start games due to a registration of trophies error thing.
Does anyone else have this issue?
05-09-2011
02:18 PM
that issue is normal, it is the same as the not being able to launch DLC and all that stuff, can you, play a game or register a trophy if you create another account on your ps3?
i think this is due to some kind of formatting...
05-09-2011
02:46 PM
Ok well my question is how do I format my HDD back to normal. I will have to use a PC won't I? I want to go back to my own MFW and just run Debian from my external (for now) because of these issues.

Does anyone know how to get sound working on debian?
05-10-2011
01:50 PM
My disk is a 500Gb drive and if i format the 465Gb partition on it (can't remember if it is ps3vflasha, b or c) everything is gone and it is a clean disk.
Needs installing of the (C)FW again though.
But maybe better wait to see if the problem can be fixed in an easy way.
I want to try to see what happens if I replace the OtherOS++ xregistry file to the original backup I have.
Like I said before, with this CFW I got a black and red PSN icon and all PSN settings were lost (never happened before) so if I put my original registry back it should work again. It is an xregistry from my own MFW build I used with my internal Linux before.
Format time to go: 7 hours and some minutes .....
I will compare later what kind of differences there are on both to see what part of the xregistry tells the PS3 it needs to sync the trophies. If the replacing works of course
Maybe it is a region problem like I was thinking before. This might explain the problems with the DLC's also. I always use a pup for western europe and I don't know what kind of pup is used for this OtherOS++ build.
05-10-2011
07:45 PM
@Oozic I forgot to ask did you have these problems when you did this without this pup. It was my understanding you were able to install to internal with your own MFW. If you didn't notice problems with that method then that would probably be the best method for now. Yes dual booting Linux is a great victory for the scene, but it sucks that game playability is almost destroyed.
Got my HDD back to normal. SATA cable and Gparted. I really would like to toy around with this but I also like playing games. If a solution to the problems comes around I will give it another shot.
Well the kids leave this weekend so I might spend 2 days in my nerd cave :D
Debian installed just fine and ran pretty good. Ubuntu would be my next attempt. Also to add I never lost PSN settings. I just had an issue with games with trophies. I really want Ubuntu so I am also looking into any theories I have about the issues at hand. On a side note. Maybe the flags are just screwy. Has anyone tried bootgameos.pkg then rebooted? I can't as of right since I would have to do all my partitioning again and I can't do it at this time.
05-11-2011
04:38 AM
I ran intro the same problem with regestrating trophies when my 3 year old son were going to play my backup of Lego Harry Potter. What worked with that game were to start it in direct boot through Multiman 2.0. It might fix the problem with a few other games as well

OoZic: Nice dreambox in that picture of Ubuntu
Anyway I used this guide to install debian using DEBOOTSTRAP: http://git.gitbrew.org/ps3/?p=othero...TSTRAP;hb=HEAD
It works as a charm, only problem is that I have no sound...
I have also tried installing Ubuntu using the same guide, but it hangs on boot.
I prefer Ubuntu before Debian, so if anyone know what might fix the Ubuntu debootstrap install any help is appreceated
05-11-2011
04:58 AM
I am putting my backup back now. I will make my OtherOS++ GameOS settings almost the same way as it was before on my own MFW and will save the xregistry from it. I will compare it and add my old user settings for PSN etc. to it and see if there are any region changes and change them back also. I hope it will work this way.
There are no trophies on my clean system so I don't understand the PS3 wants to sync them at all. So there must be another reason, like location of the Trophy servers it wants to sync and only PSN can tell the PS3 this info.
************* [ - Post Merged - ] *************
Ow, and Sony: Dreammedia doesn't care if I hack the hell out of my Dreambox. They love the Dreambox as much as their customers do and are happy with everything that makes the Dreambox better. Only using their bootloader on cloned boxes is the thing they don't like.
To bad it's max is 1080i and not 1080P like the PS3 is. For sat tv 1080p isn't possible but for playing movies I miss it.
If you start Petitboot and push the "e" you can change the startup settings for the installed distro. Add "single" at the end of the last line and start Ubuntu. Are you able to get into "single user terminal" (telinit 1 = only text) and see the welcome text from ubuntu? (not welcome screen!)
From within this terminal you can install xserver, gnome or xlde and change root password, add users etc. with "telinit 5" command you can see if you can get into normal graphic mode then. If you get into telint 5 text terminal use the "startx" command.
If you can't get in the "single user terminal": did you install (or copy from other install) graf his kernel to it? Only graf his kernel can recognize the ps3vflash. Standard kernel doesn't recognize the partitions making it not finding the installed distro. Kboot.conf needs also be created with the new uuid info.
05-11-2011
05:56 AM
I tried to install Ubuntu one more time. I have graf's kernel installed, it starts to boot but after 2 secounds it gives me this error:
init: plymouth-splash main process (607) terminated with status 2
init: plymouth main process (379) killed by SEGV signal
05-11-2011
06:14 AM
I have an external device (8 Gb) with Debian and I used that a lot to install Ubuntu on internal. This way I could check if all needed files where there and I could change kboot and some other things like taking ownership of the Ubuntu partition. So I used that for taking control with chroot command.
05-11-2011
10:19 AM
Ok well in your first guide I noticed that Vflash 6 was never created nor deleted. Do you think that might be the cause of certain issues with this pup. Either way thanks for the work you have put into this, but I am sticking to your guide for now while I play around.
05-11-2011
07:56 PM
Ok, did a round of flashing (otheros++ -> OFW -> MFW -> otheros++) and I am back at OtherOS

Still trophy sync error but I will play my games on my other PS3 until they have a fix.
My old translated guide created the partition on ps3vflashg. And as I learned later, this is a kind of protected partition so maybe it is better to not use ps3vflashg.
Maybe create the partition again with the help of the new guide. Once it is there just follow my old guide after the formatting stage. With the old guide only vflash 5 and 7 are used, with the new guide 5,6 and 7 are used and that is why it goes to ps3vflashh now

We miss the RSX driver (=Realistic Syntheziser= Nvidia GPU) for playing good quality games. The PS3 has also a limited memory.

we can use browsers like Firefox and that kind of things. They work ok if you don't open to much tabs. Emulators will also run, haven't tested it tough. Word-processing and Gimp work also
05-12-2011

i thought rsx is unlocked with this, just no custom driver made for ooS to utilise it, correct?
mad props to Graf and Levand and all others involved for their mad genius skills.

also you want (and only can) to format your drive with GameOS because you also need it for backup games. And this is Linux we are talking about. It is also not a partition problem but a hardware problem.
Use google to check what kind of larger drives as internal drive are suitable for the PS3 and try to change it where you bought it.

You have a 1Tb drive build in. Does it work OK if you format it in GameOS and put a part of your backup back? Or try to backup a game?
What do you use to put your backup back? How did you make a backup?
You want to create a 40Gb Linux partition as I understand?
Did you succeed in this and did you have to re-format the drive losing 43Gb from the GameOS partition?
And to this newly formatted partition (+- 800 Gb) you want to put your backup back?
Main point is: do you use FTP to put your backup back or do you use the Sony util from GameOS for backup making/restoring? Or are you trying to do it in another way?
Ow, and if your backups have lots of small files (small kb files etc) it will make putting your backup back take a very long time. Remove all backups from games you own (=all?) from the backup and re-backup them later.

If you still have your old 500Gb harddisk just put it back to the PS3 and install OpenFTP 2.2 (or simular) to it. Use a FTP program (WinSCP is a free windows one) and copy your dev_hddo (and the xregistry file in dev_flash2) to a ntfs partition (your internal HD contains files > 4GB making ntfs a must) Maybe use the external device you used to store the Sony backup for this? You have to start all over again but it won't take 3 days I think.
If you want a Linux partition you have to create it before you put your backup back. The PS3 formats the drive after creating the partition so your backup will be erased again.
And also delete all games you own from the PS3 first before you make a backup. this saves a lot of space and time
I have installed OFW 3.55 3 times this week and the Linux partition is still here and working. It won't touch the partition table. But maybe Sony will change that in the future, can't tell.

FTP is a standard protocol and used on every serious platform I know. You can find info about it in your own language I think making it better to understand. All web-site builders use it to upload their files to their website for example. Actually it is simple: OpenFTP 2.2 is a server program changing your PS3 to an FTP server. Your windows PC is the client. You set up a connection between both and you have access to the internal harddisk if you run OpenFTP.
Never delete something from the dev_flash directories!! Your PS3 will brick. Only use FTP for backup (download) if you don't know what you are doing and only access the dev_hdd0 directory !!! Your PSN games are also there so you back tehm up also. Do note: We get PSN sync errors with this current OtherOS++ installation, I don't know if it also affects PSN games.
With FTP I get 11,2 Mb/s (larger files) with my old speedtouch adsl modem/router. I think it is the same speed as the util by approach. point is I don't know how the util works, never used it. Maybe the util is having problems with the non-standard size drive you use and that is why you get errors.
Only other reason for getting errors might be the temperature. It is a larger size making the cooling different from standard PS3 situation (air stream). If the PS3 is on for 3 days I don't know what happens to the temperature. If the drive gets to hot the filesystem can get damaged giving the PS3 problems. Drive can also die if it gets to hot for a long time. And 3 days only writing for a drive doesn't make it happy I can tell you.
With FTP you can interrupt the copy proccess and do the rest later, don't know if the util can do that also.

A russian guy picked up his work and continues his project
Don't want to sound like a teacher but Sony logs all our conversations on the PS3 hack sites, don't give them and the judge a reason to think graf_chokolo is still trying to use, and develop for, Linux on the PS3. He doesn't till the judge understands we have the right to run an alternative OS on our own devices.
You can't interrupt the backup proccess? Just install the tools to make the partition and create it and after that putting your backup back? You are wasting time otherwise.

Here is an respose to the unanswered "256 nand?" posts, I'm feeling your pain and...
A little bird told me 256 nand otheros++ cfw is on the horizon,.. so if your like me and have non-vflash, your wait will soon be over. A linux hdd region has been successfully created directly on the hdd on both 256 nand & vflash machines. I'm not a dev in any way shape or form, i just know for a fact that its been done, and glevand is working on a user friendly solution for everyone.
PS Please don't bug him about when we're going to be there, or hes likely to pull this car right over.

I currently am on 3.55 so this dual boot is an option for me. But there is one thing I would like to get clear on. Is it possible to use this dual boot method to run GameOS with the latest OFW that can play on PSN? I would really like to get linux running but for me PSN is more important. If not possible now, will there be plans to make this possible in the future?
05-17-2011

Maybe in the future if the PS3 is completely hacked (lvl0 keys) an OFW in combo with OtherOS++ or combo OFW/CFW is possible but not for now.

I think you can use Fdisk from within petitboot?
I have used the old method, I used lvl2-v9, this lets met start the Debian net CD and from there I can use the partition-manager to partition and format the new partitions on ps3vflashh. But that is because I installed it before geoffrey wrote his guide how to install OtherOS++.

I have searched a lot of forums looking for an answer for this but they all just tell you what the thing is supposed to do. I have tried the geoffrey levand petitboot method using debian on 3.41 and 3.55 and to date i have yet to see any evidence of the QA mode that is supposed to enabled in update manager or the dongleless downgrade factory service. Perhaps it is something i am doing wrong or have missed something but as there are no tuts for enabling these options could someone please put me out of my misery and explain what i am doing wrong
************* [ - Post Merged - ] *************
I have installed the otheros petitboot debian method using vflash etc and i have got it up and running on both 3.41 and 3.55 successfully. But my frustration is that no matter where i look there is a quote that using geoffrey levands method of linux dual os enables QA mode in update manager and a factory service dongless downgrade mode. I have not seen any evidence of either on both firmware installs i have done where is these options or where am i going wrong!!!!

For ps3db do this:
mount -t ufs -o ufstype=ufs2 /dev/ps3db /mnt (as root !!)
(be very careful with this !!! it is your PS3 flash with the CFW, messing/deleting files from here can change your PS3 in a brick.....)

02:55 PM
First of all hi there you guys and ladies..!
last 24 hrs i was trying to install and run that **** (linux) on my slim PS3 16mb(nor) originally KMEAW 3.55 CFW nailed on it and i faced with so many stupid problems which is caused by me or my console or those people introducing themselfs as a Hacker...and im now here to explore to find out what the exact problem was or problems were...so let then this story begin from its beginning...
06 october 2011 around 1030lt somehow i finally made a decision to install one of the linux distros
out there on my ps3 which is not a necessity but an interest because i dont need it...
then started to search on the net how this could be done correctly and found which is firstly installing
CFW355-OTHEROS++-22GB on my slim ps3 then restoring ps3 system and got 111GB/149GB and then installing
setup_flash_for_otheros and restarting the console..and installing install_otheros.pkg with usb dtbImage.ps3.bin
( which is exactly dtbImage.ps3.bin.minimal for 16mb nor) including in it and then installing boot_otheros and
then installing reboot and restarting and getting the petitboot screen...everything is ok till here..
but then exit to shell and trying to run create_hdd_region.sh first with this command
rootps3-linux:$ cd /tmp/petitboot/mnt/sda1 enter
rootps3-linux:$/tmp/petitboot/mnt/sda1/chmod a+x create_hdd_region.sh enter to make it executable..
create_hdd_region.sh read-only system file
rootps3-linux:$chmod 755 create_hdd_region.sh enter and again the same ****in read-only error
rootps3-lin..._hdd_region.sh enter and finally work ok thank GOD and reboot from the command
for rebooting the system..now im in xmb menu and run reboot.pkg again and now petitbot again..
ok now im using parted command..as below ;
1. parted /dev/ps3dd
2. mklabel gpt
3. mkpart primary 0 2GB
4. print
5. mkpart primary 2GB and asking end? 22GB and enter and print again then i see 2 parts
first one starting from 17.5kb to 2GB and second one 2GB to 22GB as we wanted..ok but
those read only file system errors everywhere especially rebooting escaping from petitboot..
ok now i choose ubuntu-10.04-alternate-powerpc+ps3.iso downloaded from here :
http://mirrors.med.harvard.edu/ubunt...owerpc+ps3.iso
burned it to cd-r with 4x speed successfully then put it while on xmb menu and press reboot.pkg to start petitboot..petitboot started and which saw the disc and ubuntu and i choose install ubuntu 10.04 bla bla bla..
and system going down... and started to load ubuntu..ok very good..
but when i came to partioning phase that ****ing ubuntu couldnt see our /dev/ps3dd part..that **** only see /dev/ps3da or smthing like that i couldnt remember, which is the whole part of the HDD including GameOS...and i continue to installing with this shape(it took 3.5 hours) because im very angry i know that this is wrong because when we reboot the machine it will ask ps3 hdd corrupted and must be formatted..
NOOOOO not now and started petitboot again and load ubuntu and login screen come...and now im on gnome desktop..everything is working but a little bit slow..internet is working..even i login my facebook account
to taste of ps3 ubuntu atmosphere before formatting everything :-)
then i formatted hdd and refresh everything again and now choose Freebsd distro and found it from here:
http://www.ps3hax.net/2011/09/gitbre...driver-support
but while i choose to start installing on petitboot screen it doesnt work in every resolution options and always read-only filesystem errors every where again......and i think this is because the fault of those HACKERS... not me or my ps3 console they couldnt access ps3 hdd even we can login on petitboot as a root...? or is there a command to remove read-only file sytem error which is releated to mounting issues i suppose..
NOW PLS SOMEONE a real hacker maybe COULD HELP ME....?

http://sourceforge.net/userapps/medi...itle=Main_Page
It has everything implanted for Linux on the PS3 (including graf his kernel), works almost "out of the box". It is also a live CD, no installation required to test if it works. Once it works you can install Red Ribbon from within the running live CD. It works also almost the same to Ubuntu (apt-get etc.), only it is a lot lighter
The harvard image is for PS3's with original FW 3.15 firmware I suppose. This was the last firmware that could legally (according to $ony) run Linux.
Updated info about freebsd can be found here:
http://gitbrew.org/~glevand/ps3/freebsd/
For help with FreeBSD you can always get help via their IRC channel
My advice is to stay away from freebsd until you are more experienced with Linux on the PS3. Red Ribbon is the best way to get Linux working for inexperienced (= combination PS3 hardware and Linux) users
I'm no real hacker btw, only someone who runs Linux on a hacked PS3 for a longer time

OoZic thanks for your help..

maybe the problem about recognization of /dev/ps3dd part is related to
Kernel file of harvard ubuntu distro but the read-only file system errors not which is exactly the origin of the trouble i reckon..
the link you given to me about the freebsd is the same link where i downloaded the live cd before...
and thanks for the freebsd info because i dont know linux
and Can I install that RedRibbon RC5 without petitboot loader which isnt working properly on my console you know those read-only file system errors and i also turned back to my 3.55 KMEAW CFW,
installed my games and apps again
i mean could i use asbestOS 1.5 or bootOS2.1 and lv2patcherv9 combination to install RedRibbon RC5 ? i dont want to get back CFW355-OTHEROS++-22GB which will destroy all the HDD again and takes time ...
If your answer YES then i ll try it one more time otwerwise i have to say Good Bye Linux because i dont need you.!

I have made a post before about this:
You could have left the already created ps3dd region while waiting for some help
10-11-2011
05:11 AM
i couldnt remember perfectly but i suppose during the partioning operation the answer to END question was not going anymore than 22GB..i tried it by myself...even its wrong it doesnt change anything..because the rest part left just as an unallocated space
i mean it has nothing to do with size of /dev/ps3dd but how the partioning SyStem TaBle(i couldnt figure out what kind of a partion system this is.?) is itself. i also tried to format and succeded those 2 parts with mkfs... command the first one as linux-swap and the other as ext2 but nothing changed during the ubuntu installation which is blind to our /dev/ps3dd primary parts or we hide it without knowing

i wonder while booting from the ubuntu cd if we put F8 to enter the Boot Menu then F6 for other options and try to apply some boot parameters..By selecting this option, a line of "boot text" should appear across the bottom of the screen and at the end of the line quiet splash-- can be seen at the end of the line..? pls bro can you delete quiet splash-- and try if it doesnt work then pls try to add acpi=off after deleting quiet splash-- again..maybe it can work i really dont know im NOT a hacker just trying to use my brain
PLS Bro..Can you do that for me(i dont want to delete all my hdd again) and other PS3 users wanted to see Linux on their blackbox perfectly working..!
In summary why those StupiD hackers couldnt manage to run this partioning operation during the ps3 system restore section ??? is it so difficult for you to get this **** work then why they called themselfs as Hacker?

02:13 AM
I gave you the reason why you got the write errors. Can't help you further with this. GPT doesn't work the same way as MBR.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUID_Partition_Table
For ps3dd I always talk about a region and not a partition because the region has to be partitioned again.Ps3dd is more a kind of harddisk and you tell it the wrong size...
Throw away (or store it somewhere) the downloaded Harvard Ubuntu disk. It won't help you in any way because it doesn't have the patched kernel. Without patched kernel Ubuntu can't see the ps3dd region. Red Ribbon will do the job once you have followed the steps correctly...
If you want to mess with boot options you have to use the petitboot options using the Shell or the edit command line option. Not the options from the CD. Again, the Harvard CD is made for original PS3's on old FW, not for hacked PS3's on 3.55.
Hackers do the job to get the things done for themselves and share their findings. Have some respect for their hard work, don't call them stupid because you can't copy their work while others can. It won't help you to get help, more the opposite
I'm not going to mess with the acpi options because the HyperVisor doesn't support it.

i still dont think so the reason of read-only file system errors is related to wrong size but mounting issues..because those errors begins with create_hdd_region.sh script..i have so many difficulties to run that command because of that read-only errors..but somehow i finally manage run it without problem and restarted then see /dev/ps3dd region.
anyway...Now im gonna try it one more time..i downloaded the Red_Ribbon_RC5.iso from the place you given me and checked md5 and no problem...
but if this s hi t not gonna work then i really get pissed off because all my games and apps and coldboots vs..vs.. will be deleted again for nothing....!
so the linux operation has already begun...!i ll share the results here as soon as it finishes.

hmm...unfortunately Im writing this post on /PS3/RedRibbonRC5 right now
and use nano command for editing kboot.conf and it worked..

now what program add-ons should i download via synaptic package panager..for example i can play dolphin emu on my Ubuntu 11.04 natty narwhall x64 so can i download it here and play and or how can i install that ps3rsx.tar.gz or do i need install that gpu driver? vs..vs...?
you were right about 23.6GB..but Im also rigth about it can change nothing because RR5 could see either that way and this way no matter what size it has...
The true problem is KERNEL file as you said before...
I firstly try to change the resolution from kboot.conf but again that f uckin g permission error again prevented me to save the file..and I supposed we login as a root to the system but it seems not..so what do I do?opened the terminal and enter sudo su to make me root...hah haaa
after resolution i tested some mp3 and wma files and working nice..after that tested mp4 and wmv and flv video files and working good..and tested net connection and working good..but i havent tested wifi and bluetooth yet.
After all it is good to have a RedRibbon but i prefer Ubuntu..could we change the kernel files ??? just joking
Im afraid i still continue giving you headache for sometime..
Do you think should we put here a new perfect tutorial shows from the beginning to the end for those people having trouble installing linux ?

You can make a multiboot system if you want. Instead of 1 22Gb partition make 2 11Gb partitions. I have had a system with 3 different distro's (including Ubuntu 10.04 updated to 11.04) when we had the old install way with the 44 GB ps3flashh partition. After installing the distro you need to take ownership (chown command) of that partition from within a working install (Red Ribbon) and copy Graf his patched kernel to it
Red Ribbon is Debian/Ubuntu compatible. Every program that runs on Ubuntu runs also on Red ribbon. Are you able to use apt-get for the program you want if it isn't in the Ubuntu Software Center?
I think we need rsx support for Dolphin. Haven't tested it yet, only Aros (Amiga Research Operating System). Only FreeBSD has partially rsx support but haven't been on FreeBSD yet. No energy to invest in this due to personal reasons. The day before yesterday I played my first PS3 game in 7 weeks...
No need for a new tutorial. I think gitbrew's guides are enough, they only need to explain the part you have had problems with a little better. It is the point I also went wrong because i didn't look at the Print output but assumed it was 22Gb also first time.
Gitbrew is down due to server movement btw...
Enjoy your PS3 Linux and let us know if you get Dolphin running and how fast it is

Now I have an interesting problem now when i change to resolution VESA Modes 11: wxga (1280 x 768) which is the best choice for my hd ready screen(1366x768) and fits fully then SOUNDS not coming while playing musics or videos..? even i formatted ps3 and install RRC5 again to figure out the source of this problem that is changing the resolution to vesa 11:wxga mode..?because when i turned back to any resolution sounds coming as normaly again..? what the hell ..?
and thats why we re having difficulties installing linux and those tutorials written for people knowing linux not suitable for us

i feel sure SONY loves it so much..

11: wxga (1280 x 768) which is the best suitable resolution for my screen and ps3 connected to tv's HDMI Port 1 but no sound coming with this resolution..and i can use all the other options except 12: sxga (1280 x 1024) and 13: wuxga (1920 x 1200) but not properly fit to the screen i mean there are spaces left corners..isnt there a solution for this?
secondly i can access http://portal.gitbrew.org/wikibrew/PS3:Linux via googles framebuffer technic
How can I install ps3rsx.tar.gz via lxterminal screen with using make command
I firstly have done sudo apt-get update and upgrade and downloaded just around 30 mb and some repositories not working there is nothing so much for PPC i think.. for instance how can we install flashplayer plugin for PPC ?then I downloaded VLC Player working but this time picture's not coming and sounds come even all plugins and codecs installed..
now i want to download gnome desktop via synaptic but its around 480mb
and at last i like your picture in your changing screen resolutions on Debian GDM3 post with two console like me

red Ribbon is made to be very small, that's why LX is used. I think you mess up Red Ribbon if you install Gnome as I remember
Isn't ps3rsx.tar.gz only the rsx documentation? Maybe I mix it up with another file, doesn't matter because you are unable to use RSX with Red Ribbon. Only the linux swap is mounted to the RSX ram automatically (fast swap
$ony loves me so much they placed me on their list because I cloned a git with keys and tools for the PS3. Found my name in their lawyers files (in the Geohot ages)

hmm. i ve already tried it before from petitboot screen as you written but it doesnt work...im bored with this resolution settings
and now i using 133: 1080pf (1920 x 1080) but there are still spaces left from corners..
this made me happy
because it is almost similar to my ubuntu gnome desktop..
but either lxde or gnome linux running slower than my laptop and also plays 720p videos slowly it indicates we couldnt manage to run any psx or dolphin emu with good speed even if we could install them unless we have a nice rsx driver
for ubuntu-installer.sh script i ve already checked and downloaded it before which is a automated installing system via terminal screen and needs good net connection i suppose
off course you know it much more than me
because it is running slowly and a PowerPC version and there are no drivers we can use written for ps3 last 5 maybe 7 seven years..pls do not misunderstand me but we couldnt run any program we want to run In my opinion hackers have to work for CFW not for linux..10 months passed but there is still no cfw after 3.55 and $oNY is getting far for beyond with 3.72

anyway i downloaded gnome desktop and installed it then after rebooting my gui login screen didnt come but CLI come..?but somehow i finally managed to get my lovely gnome login screen and i chose gnome desktop then loaded and running perfectly..
and thank you
and how can install adobe flash player and shockwave player on our PowerPC??
and finally this linux installing and running on ps3 event we always persisting comes to me unnecessary..
have a nice day..

ppc flash player: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...item&px=ODkyNw (haven't tested it, think it is still beta
)

Shockwave? As far as i know not available for Linux at all?
Don't know what is fast or slow for you. I mostly used it (when I had a lot more time) for AROS and some testing and to my findings it is pretty fast. Not really with 3d graphics because of no rsx so the ppc has to calculate everything, I get 11 fps with a 3d screenblanker (1920x1080P)
Within time the FreeBSD RSX driver, if complete, will be ported to the other distro's I think. Even with Gitbrew down Glevand and the other devs like Snowy are hard at work to open up the PS3 OS even more
Note: with a working RSX we can't use the RSX ram for swap anymore....
You can always test FreeBSD ofcourse.
For the resolution problem: check if your TV has an option like Dot by Dot, Native Mode, Just Scan, Cropping, or any other possible function to scale up/down the screen. My Sharp uses Dot by Dot...
Different devs (it's a nicer word, hacker sounds so psn-fanboy-like) have different interests, not every dev needs a higher firmware. For the Linux devs it is important to know how the Hypervisor works. With higher firmwares and changed security the Hypervisor works different as far as I know. A lot of work needs to be re-done.
There are CFW devs working on the new keys, sadly enough Sony understands the word Random now and they had one last hiding place left... But it isn't something the Linux devs are after, they are after the way the PS3 works in generally...

i couldnt manage to install that Lightspark for PPC even which is based on debian but i will try it later or find something new when i have a time..if it works then i ll share it in a detailed post here ..

me..

there is no need to worry cause most of the time im offline...
Im 100% feel sure trying to install and run a psx or dolphin emu on Linux PPC right now is a waste of time unless we have a nice RSX or GPU driver and good Kernel file working harmonicaly just like a well matched couple..!
In the mean time our lovely devs must work only on fw issues which is exactly what we need ,
this is because running linux on PS3 is useless but a feeling of interest maybe curiosity drives us to make it happen just like
Moreover in todays digital world we have to interest in technology whether we want or not and vs..vs..
so it means most of the people have got their own pc's or notebooks or a similar thing which have much more capability
to run Linux in a more efficient way than our PS3..
and Would you like to give me your msn address or anyother then i ll add you as a favourite ..!

I dont know if this is the right place to submit.
I am stuck on Kboot since forever now.
I downloaded the live cd file for ps3. I have tried several ways to try and get
it to boot off it, but to no avail.
I tried on 3 diff firmwares (kmeaw, otheros , rogero)
I know thats not the issue. But i want to put out all the details.
My knowledge of Ps3 and Linux may not that be alot, my main reason is
that i need my ps3 as a multimedia format to play all the video and audio formats
without having them to be converted.
Any help will be greatly appreciated
Thankyou in advance

I have a feeling where the original inormation is comming from, I hope he is very carefull and stops with using the word "guys" because it points to someone...

and maybe the dev can add to his work in progess: find a way to enable the RSX again like before FW 2.10. That would make my year

so petitboot would enable me to run the live cd version ?
And in terms of using showtime plugin, i have MKV and m4v format files
which some how the psp recognizes and plays without any issues on its main xmb
Thankyou though for the quick replies

best is to install Rebug OtherOS++ and be sure to go into recovery after it and choose Restore PS3 System. This way the 22Gb partition for OtherOS++ gets created.
Even better, follow the gitbrew guide but change their CFW with the Rebug one:
http://wiki.gitbrew.org/wikibrew/PS3..._PS3_models.29
Once petitboot is running you can use the Live CD, do note the Live CD is slow. You can also run the Live CD from an USB device...
with the Live CD you can install it to the created partition

Hey thanks for the reply

really appreciate it. Even though this thread is history.
Ive used the rebug cfw other os++ one with the gitbrew tutorial
And as a Noob always does i ran into 2 issues while getting the whole thing going:
I installed all the applications for flashing dumping
and even got to the petitboot.
I cant read the screen clearly now(running through hdmi on 720p TV)
But i still kept on following the instructions on gitbrew tutorial section
until i hit the road block of the login username and password
From what i recall it was ps3 and ps3 for both username and password
but it keeps on rejecting it. And thats where ive hit the brick wall.
Once again thank you for leading me to this step
i know im just a few steps away from getting to the goal

If I did a full format would it delete my otherOS vflash partition and merge it to the main ps3 partition? I update to 3.73 but my 40+ otherOS partition is still taking up the ps3 space.
Or am i stuck out on the 40+ gigs?
