• PS3 System Software Update 3.61 Now Available To Download – PSN Still Offline

    Official Firmware, PS3 Hacks , 14.05.2011

    Well it seems that we will be getting PSN back quite soon, SCEA and SCEE have posted on their blogs, that firmware 3.61 is now available to download, here is a quote:

    We have been working on a new PS3 system software update that requires all PSN users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored. The update (v3.61) is mandatory and is available now.

    If using a PS3, your password can only be changed on your own PS3 (or a PS3 on which your PSN account was activated), as an added layer of security. If you have never downloaded any content using your account on the system, an email will be sent to the registered sign-in ID (email address) associated with your account when you first attempt to sign-in to PSN. This e-mail will contain a link that will enable you to change your password. In this email, click on the link and follow the instructions to change your password. Once you have changed your password you can sign-in to your account using your new password.

    We strongly recommend that all PSN account holders with PS3s update their systems to prepare for when PlayStation Network is back online. The release of this update is a critical step as we work to make PlayStation Network significantly more secure. Thank you for your continued support and patience.

      Ummm you may be in for a small surprise. I was told in IRC that the crypto changed after 3.56 so enabling this is done in a completely different fashion.

      What will happen to the accounts that don't get their password changed?

      My main account holding PSN downloads and € 35,- credit was made on my CFW PS3 and my email isn't valid anymore (ok, never was )

      Your Screwed unless Sony has sympathy and provides new stuff for new PSN users. Maybe you can call them and work this out? Just not mention anything about the CFW of course.

      If I have to contact the Dutch PSN department and tell them my PSN name they will laugh their asses off and ban me because my PSN name is way to sexual in Dutch
      Maybe QA flagging can help me out in a short term

      Awesome, they published it very close to the Mathieulh QA Flag announcement so i suppose they didn't get any measure to block it. =)

      When someone useful will tell us how to do that i'll be happy!

      People can not go online yet, we are just able to update our PS3 to the latest firmware which is 3.61, the devs are able to go online but they are just making sure it is safe for us and to make sure there will be no breach in the coming months or years when the network goes Live

      Well PSN is online but I can't access the PlayStation store. Trying Netflix now.

      EDIT: Netflix confirmed working.

      I'm not sure about anybody else, but Netflix has worked through the entire outage for me. When the screen telling me PSN login is required, i just push X, attempt the login, get the PSN is down for maintenance, and press O. Netflix worked normally. (figure that little bit of info may help a few of the people who are still down atm)

      The update map on Sony's site atm shows pretty much all of New England and California restored. Waiting on the kids to go to bed and get off the damn Netflix so I can check and see if my state is back up yet, and just not updated on the map.

      I think it's because of accessibility and level of importance. Not everyone can 'QA Flag' their system, also, the fact that OFW users greatly outnumber CFW users makes PSN being online the 'hotter' topic.

      QA Flagging isn't noob-friendly, either, which doesn't matter really but for someone like me who doesn't know jack when it comes to the technical aspect of the PS3, it's just a turn-off until a noob friendly guide/method is released.

      I'm not saying that I'm stupid, just lazy and being on OFW 3.61 doesn't help.

      I hope so too. I'll gladly give up PSN at this point for homebrew. It was foolish of me to leave my sweet CFW...Alas, a 3.61 CFW would most likely only be installed to already-CFW consoles.

      i know that the goal was Linux since Sony released the Update to remove OtherOS but the first CFW's wasnt about Linux at all..

      don't get your hopes up ofw3.56 was released 4 months ago and no one has been able to jailbreak it (all that came out was a version spoofer). the ps3 hacking community is going very slowing since geohot was sued.

      If the ultimate goal was linux, then I'm confused because that problem was already and always solved, just be on a firmware pre 3.21.

      You see, the ACTUAL goal is keeping linux WITHOUT losing other features, like newer games or (perhaps less of a big deal to some) PSN.

      So, staying on 3.55 CFW and perfecting the restoration of other OS is only going to put us back where we had been when 3.21 first came out, we will start seeing more and more games that will make us forced to weigh our options, linux, or new games and PSN.

      3.55 Kmeaw allowed me to connect to PSN (before ofw 3.56 was released) and re-activate my stuff. I knew I was giving up online play and I was/am still okay with it.
      As they secure PSN from malicious hackers, they are of course going to continue to block legal homebrew users as well.

      Very true but most people just want higher MFWs for warez. And to the person that said the first CFW wasn't about linux you are correct. It was about running unsigned code without warez. Geohot never enabled warez, flukes did when he enabled peek and poke on 3.55 which lead to Waninkoko, WutangRza, and Kmeaw MFWs.Code running was the ultimate goal. So yes in a way I was partially wrong. Besides wait and see how the next jailbreak is acquired. I bet the hole is discovered through Linux and Graf's tools.

      What's this? The update is "mandatory"? I though updates were optional, isn't that how they got away with removing otheros?

      Hopefully someone will anonymously release cfw 3.61 by the end of next week :P But even if they dont I have 3 ps3s, 1 cfw, 1 otheros and 1 ofw :D

      Original? Wht you mean by original - official? They are both official firmwares, you need 3.61 to use psn now.

      According to security expert John Bumgarner of the U.S. Cyber Consequences Unit, in the three weeks since the initial attack on Sony’s network, he still found numerous unpatched vulnerabilities. Sony failed to reply directly to the report, but had patched several of the flaws after being notified.

      Oh great, another useless update from Sony... Likely cause they want to make sure their servers aren't attacked from their own units. Wtf... I think this time I gonna pass, I not looking forward to the aftermath when PSN is back up.

      How long when PSN returns before it gets taken off again, by Sony, hackers or otherwise? A week, a month? Honestly before people get too excited with going back on PSN, make sure to edit/remove vital information on your end, and don't be surprised if the attacks are not over with.

      QA flag can only be set from within Linux (as far as we know) and with graf his kernel/tools, so CFW 3.41/3.55 is needed and the flag only tells the PS3 to look for the QA token. It doesn't tell the PS3 it is a QA machine.

      Well Sony finally wore me down. Want to play Portal 2, La Noire and 3RD strike so i'm removing homebrew and backup managers and reverting to OFW. The ride was fun while it lasted but their are to many AAA titles that CFW wont run. Qa Flag looks promising but i'm done. Peace out

      Supposedly this has controller sleep? That would be nice to backport onto one of the existing CFW's. Not giving up my Linux, FBA, SNES, and Stella for controller sleep. Linux and the possibility of XBMC will give this heap a second life long after $ony has moved onto PS4. I am not trading that for anything.
