Well know Spanish developer jaicrab has posted information on his blog about a new project he is working on, which seems to be a brand new CFW, this firmware will probably only be 3.55, so don’t get excited about a 3.60/3.65 release, some information on JFW:

    In the works:

    Including:
    - Startup Plugins Manager.
    - Multi tasking apps/Apps running while doing something else.(For Example: FTP while playing)
    - Payload load before entering XMB. Free Cobra Payload…
    . . .

Now whilst all that sounds awesome, this was not the most exciting information on the site, jaicrab posted keys, which i asume are the keys belonging to the Cobra Dongle:

    Greetings to the Cobra TEAM.

So we all knew that Sony was trying to build an “unhackable” PS3. Well just recently, they announced a new model: CECH-3000B. The external features look exactly the same except the power and eject buttons are tweaked a little bit. They did however tweak some of the hardware which they did not mention.Probably just minor adjustments to stop future custom firmwares to run. The article also says that it will have PS2 compatibility which i kind of find to be doubtful. Heres a quote from the arcticle:

At the beginning of last week we learned that Microsoft is set to introduce a new model Xbox 360 Slim. The benefits of the hardware update include the CPU, GPU, memory, and logic all being on one piece of silicon. That in turn means less power consumption, less heat, and a smaller power brick.

This week it’s Sony’s turn to introduce a hardware update for the PlayStation 3, but this one could potentially be a lot more popular than Microsoft’s update. The reason why? PlayStation 2 compatibility is mentioned, although remains far from being a definite feature.

The new PS3 carries the model name CECH-3000B. It will come in both 320GB and 160GB models with the former weighing 2.6kg (down from 3.0kg). Externally it looks exactly the same except for the power and eject buttons getting a slight design tweak.

Specifics as to what Sony has changed internally are not available, but we suspect a similar silicon shrink to the Xbox 360 as Sony has managed to cut power consumption from 230 to 200 watts.

    PS2 Compatibility?

Most intriguingly, the translated official Sony information page for the updated machine mentions PlayStation 2 compatibility. Specifically it says in the notes at the bottom of the page that:

“This product, “PlayStation 2″ are having a compatibility with proprietary software.”

It could be a mistranslation, or it may be Sony bringing back backwards compatibility now that they’ve figured out how to do it in software.

PS2 compatibility came as standard on the original PS3 due to the inclusion of the Emotion Engine chip. But with the slim redesign that chip was dropped and with it went PS2 game compatibility.

    Source:
    http://www.geek.com/articles/games/s…sted-20110620/

    EDIT:
Well it seems that Google Translate, doesn’t like translating properly, forum member kazie said this:

    [本製品は、「プレイステーション 2」専用ソフトウェアとの互換性を有しておりません]
Got translated as [“This product, “PlayStation 2″ are having a compatibility with proprietary software.”]

While it should be translated more like:
[This product doesn't possess the compatibility with the "PlayStation 2" exclusive software.]

So it won’t have Playstation 2 compability.

Don’t rely too much on google-translate I would say.

Now this isn’t exactly related to the PS3 system, but it does involve a nifty use with the PS3 DS3 controller. Joshua Noble, an extremely bored person at his work hooked up a DS3 to his printer to play a videogame off it. Noble, and two of his other friends coded a game in openFrameworks and used the thermal receipt printer with a modded white beam to display game and your “car”.

As you probably already guessed the level map is being printed off your printer while you play…wasteful but nonetheless its one of those “wtf…cool” moments :)

You can see the game Receipt Racer played via video below:

The group known as The Anonymous Data Protection Officers, who released this PDF on the lack of PSN security back in January, have have released a program that would let you anonymously register on PSN. All it simply does is make the process simpler to register while signing up on the PSN. here is a quote from the source.

his application was written by the intention to disclose security issues in the PlayStation Network. It is meant to be used as private investigation only.

Please keep in mind that European law allows to reverse and analyze protocols and applications by the intention to enhance user security.

The registration will create a valid PlayStation Network account for you.

Unlike the original PSN registration, this application protects you and your personal data.

It strips sensitive information which is normally sent to and saved by the PlayStation Network, like unique console ID’s etc.

Be aware, that the PlayStation Network registration has some limitations for the registration.

    These are:

    1) Your password has to contain at least:

    - 8 characters

    - 1 upper letter

    - 1 lower letter

    - 1 number

    2) Your nickname does not exist already.

    3) Your e-mail is not registered already.

This application will not check if you follow those limitations.

If you do not follow them, the registration will fail!

It seems that the Cobra usb dongle has now been upgraded to add PS2 ISO support for backwards compatible models. Earlier it was reported that PS1 games were fully supported by the dongle on all models of the PS3. Here is a quote regarding from the website

We have released Cobra Firmware v2.0 and Cobra USB Manager v2.0, which are both available from the downloads page. Changes in this release include:

Added the ability to play PS2 ISO backups from CECHC and CECHE backwards compatible consoles. Support for the remaining backwards compatible models, CECHA and CECHB, will come in a future update

PS3, PSX, DVD and BluRay ISO’s can now be played without a real disc inserted in the PS3. Support for discless PS2 backups will come in a future update

Added an option for those users without a PS2 backwards compatible PS3 (including Slims) to test PS2 original games and ISO backups using the PS2 software only emulator which is by default included with all PS3′s. Please note however that as the software only emulator is slow and very buggy, this feature is disabled by default and is only intended as a gimmick

Cobra USB manager can now make PS3 ISO’s from backups in the standard “Jailbreak” directory format, using the copy function

Cobra USB manager is now less strict with cue/bin filenames

Bugfix: Cobra USB Manager was unable to get the PSX CD-ROM/CD-R title, and displayed “PSX-CDROM” instead

Bugfix: Under rare circumstances, Cobra USB Manager could dump invalid PS3 discs

The necessary download files can be found at the source.

It has been quite a while since we have heard of the awesome PS3 Developer, graf_chokolo, yesterday he posted this on his blog:

Hi guys, no money left anymore. Going to jail soon probably because i cannot pay court costs.
But i’m ready to stand up for everything i said and go to jail for that too. It’s not important to win, more important is to show them that we are ready to fight, that they cannot scare me off easily. Yeah, i’m ready to go to jail for my believes and my principles.
Most of people probably think that all computer and kernel hackers are weak kids, hiding in a cellar, eating pizza whole day, writing software and looking for attention :-) Maybe, but that’s NOT me. And i will get out eventually and continue my work. My work means very much to me.

Robo Hobo has released something that has been long awaited by many. A Working MAME emulator. This just a PREVIEW. Any ways on to the good stuff

    Robo Hobo quoted below

    MAME – ‘Preview’ Release

Attached is a preview release of MAME 0.142. It’s still a little rough around the edges, but it is usable. I hope to improve it greatly over the next couple of weeks, so please post any issues, feature requests, or complaints to the issue tracker on the google code page.

Due to the large file size a version run through package-finalize is not provided. If you use a CFW where this is required you will need to run it yourself.

    PS3-MAME

Unofficial MAME 0.142 PS3 GameOS port

    http://code.google.com/p/psmame/

    Installing:
Install the psmame package onto your jailbroken PS3 using normal means.
By default all data paths for mame are located under /dev_hdd0/ROMS/mame_data.
ROMS themselves can be placed anywhere and their location chosen with the frontend. The recommended path is /dev_hdd0/ROMS/mame.

    Default controls:
As of right now the only defined controls are R3 to open the MAME config menu, Select for coin, and Start for starting the game.
Further control changes can be made in the MAME config menu as needed.
Up to four controllers can be used at one time.

    Frontend:
The frontend can display screenshots of games, these should be placed in /dev_hdd0/ROMS/mame_data/snaps. You can find a full set at http://www.progettosnaps.net/snaps_en.html

    Paths:
      Under /dev_hdd0/ROMS/mame_data
        hash:	path to hash files
        samples:	path to samplesets
        artwork:	path to artwork files
        ctrlr:	path to controller definitions
        ini:	path to ini files
        font:	path to font files
        cheat:	path to cheat files
        crosshair:	path to crosshair files
snaps:	path to screenshots for frontend

      Under /dev_hdd0/game/MAME90000/USRDIR/data
        cfg:	directory to save configurations
nvram:	directory to save nvram contents,
memcard:	directory to save memory card contents
inp:	directory to save input device logs
        sta:	directory to save states
        snap:	directory to save screenshots
diff:	directory to save hard drive image difference files
comments:	directory to save debugger comments

    Known issues
When adding ROMs into your ROM dir, you must tell the frontend to rescan them. This can be done in the R3 menu.
The display currently only supports scaling by pixel aspect ratio. Future versions will support various aspect correction modes.
Changing video settings in the menu may crash MAME, they don't work anyway so don't bother.
Games which require a recompiler will not run.
Games which have high memory requirements will not run, the PS3 only has a little of 220MB of RAM available.
The default controls will need to be tweaked by the user.

well there you have it folks. I am sure some many people will enjoy this. Remember this is just a PREVIEW

Just me, a laptop, a ps3 and the internet.. and look at the hubbub i cause XD”-Samson

After His two excellent releases of windos 3.1. I finally got a chance to peek inside ps3hax.net’s member Samson’s head a bit and poke around. Well not really but I did get some questions answered!! Now we can find out what makes this man tick.

Without further ramblings from me, here is the Q&A with Samson:

    ———————————————————————————-

Q: Any thoughts about your work you would like to share?

A: I am a humble man i enjoy the ride, using my head to create simple usable apps and doing my little bit to help others and the scene, to me a GUI/OS that people can get on with is the next logical step for dosbox. I know WinDos is still a bit messy but it works and i promise to try and polish it off for a final release in a few weeks.

Q: As a developer what is your motivation?

A: It’s a cool hobby for me, i think its the love of the learning curve and doing things that should be made available on the ps3, also the beauty of simplicity.. homebrew and any program should be respected.. they grow from ideas , a hint .. some evolve from other peoples ideas and use other homebrew i think that’s kinda cool.

I’ve got no master plan i do stuff for the fun, i get in to the doing side of things a bit too much.

Q:Tell us about some of the most rewarding times with this project?

A: I am really enjoying it a lot, just seeing it grow from the default program manager finding some cool old software tweaking it, installing better drivers and finding games that played well, missile command being on of my most memorable games from my youth, all this from other very talented Dev’s and programmers some from over 10 years ago bringing their hard work back to life on a ps3 is well worth it.

Q:What are your plans for windos 3.1 in the coming months?

A:Finding the sweet spot so 3d shooters run nice, getting it to 486 speed stripping it from all the bulk and a better mouse driver, and try again to get all win32s programs working, and midi .. not to sure about internet, networking and ftp they could be a tad hard to setup.

Q: Any future projects you plan on surprising us with?

A: Yes , hopefully porting open windows (OpenWinDos) and keeping it stripped back, no games or fun a base OS with the best programs from WinDos and i don’t even think i am done with dosbox after that… to much stuff begging to be ported, look out for a stand alone .mod player that’s just for starters… maybe I’ll even have a crack at windows 95 or 98.

Q: So is there anything you would like to say to the scene?

A: Yes, Please EVERYONE just stop with all the pointless hate, humorous insults and the ‘better than you’ ego’s, we all want the same thing to be able to use our property the way we want to without question, and if we all help each other and work together without anger everything will happen a little sooner and will be a lot more painless.

Lets make this the best pyramid ever, after all we do have a well made base that’s growing all the time and being nice costs nothing.

    ————————————————————————————-

Thanks again for taking the time to answer those questions Samson. Well there you have it folks. I hope you found this enlightening and know you know there is plenty we can look forward too.

The most popular media server for the PS3 has been once again updated, twice in less than a week, here is the change log:

    Changelog:

    • Overscan compensation feature added for MEncoder
    • Return of the official OS X build, thanks for your patience!
    • MEncoder no longer crashes when using more then 8 cores
    • New build script for OS X that builds all dependencies (big thanks to Raptor399)
    • French translation fixed

    Upgrade Notes:

    For versions prior to 1.23.0:

    • To retain your old settings you may have to copy your old config file/s to a new directory.
To find out where the new directory is on your computer, run the program and go to the Traces tab and look on the 14th line, the line that says “Profile directory:”, that is the folder your config files should be saved now.
    • If you use the “media library / cache” option you should reset it.

No this does not mean CFW , but this hopefully can be useful to devs in establishing future CFW.
