• Homebrew, PS3 Hacks , 17.07.2011

Alright folks, PS3HaX member and Homebrew Dev Samson has released the final build of WinDOS for PS3.  He has added many great things and a lot of needed finishing touches.

Below you can read his release thread:

    WinDos Final

    • Now slimmed down to 100mb
    • Added XMB menu music
    • D-pad mapped to arrow keys , start=enter, select=backspace

new programs and games all launch-able from the start menu..

    added games:-

    • another world
    • hitchhikers guide to the galaxy
    • ghouls and ghosts
    • metal gear
    • shinobi
    • and lots more also a few wolf 3d mods

    emulators:-

    • Colecovision.. some launching problems , run as dos session
    • Fmsx (msx) (windows and dos versions)
    • x5200 (atari)
    • pc64 (com64)

I’ve set up dos based emus to launch from a run.bat so end user can edit and add game to be run, if you have problems try running from explorer, run, run as dos session.

    also added:

    • ps3hax theme
    • usb support(no hot plugging)
    • a fake cd rom(folder) to copy file into (ps3 file manager or ftp)
    • a windows based hex editor

so i think i am about done with it most 3d game lag.. but all 2d and simple 3d work. running slow-Pentium fixed@4000 BUT you can bump the cycles up as much as you want, but sound will suffer.

also i still cant get win32s to work on ps3 , works fine on pc .. go figure.

Thank you Samson for this great piece of homebrew, and thanks to everyone else’s work that help made this possible!!!

BTW to all those wondering it would appear this is Windows 3.1 (Calmira Explorer gave it away) so you'll only be able to use 16-bit apps. Note to the dev, not sure of how well it'd run on the PS3 port of DOSBox but you can run the first edition of Windows 95 (4.00.950) in DOSBox using a hard drive image rather than a folder. Nevertheless good job!

P.S: Surely there are some legality issues regarding releasing this with the Windows 3.1 files?

i know we've been over this already .. but just so you know i have had no requests to take it down (if i do i will)

i do plan on starting open windows (16bit) and win32s does let you use some 32bit programs but it refuses to work on the ps3 same build runs win32s programs fine in dosbox portable on pc, i have also tried windows95.img but with the hdd size limitations its not really practical.

Yeah to be honest I don't see it being an issue; it's not as it 3.1 is used by anyone nowadays, or at least I hope not

As for the Wins32s issue hopefully it'll be fixed in a later build of DOSBox.

Looks amazing. I see "network" on the screenshot. What is that exactly?
Also do you actually have DOS games in it? Oh and since it has USB support I'd be able to put actual DOS games into it? Also is there CD support at all? I think it said cd support of some sort??

This is a limitation of current CFWs, they only give full read access to PS3 game discs. I believe Cobra USB is currently the only method which gives full read access to non-PS3 game discs. Maybe they should give free samples to homebrew devs

mugan does work but very slow.. dont know about nfs2 , probably be slow..
ctrl+f12 to speed up by 250 cycles
ctrl+f11 to slow down by 250 cycles, you can put it up as much as you want without damage to your ps3, i went as high as 50000. it seams to render more frames but still not full speed.. tested lots with destruction derby.
there is no internet or network.. as it's a pain to set up and as its for programs and games, i spent my time getting it stable. it does crash sometimes but not nearly as often as the beta.

its a good idea to read the readme docs of anything your trying to run. another hidden eater egg is my poo 256color 3d wallpaper.. lolz

if you ask me its not bad.. runs boots quick, it can run dos and windows 3.1 programs and games, you can work on it i.e. hex edit stuff on usb, edit .bat's install stuff, its really only limited by your imagination. you could even write software on it if you wanted too, most basic software is there already.. even dos navigator

      EVERYTHING!!!!

Geohot's can only install packages signed with his key pair and his FW PATCH is limited to very simple homebrew. his patch was more a Proof of concept than anything. kmaew was the first real usable CFW, any MFW is better than geohots, rebug is better than geohots, dongles are better than geohots.......EVERYTHING is better than geohot's FW patch

Try right clicking on the task bar and start menu properties tick full rebuild and see if that works, that's also where you can add programs and games just right click where you want to add, set the name path and icon.. put $run /.../... if you want the pop-up thing.

from the start menu if you get a pop-up tick run as dos session with shinobi just run. If it errors out or crashes try opening stuff find the game folder highlight the .exe .com or .bat, click tools and run and try launching from there as a dos session and I've just checked street fighter, shinobi AND goblins an ghosts all working.

There is even a few more games in stuff you can see how they run and set them up in the the start menu. check out nova 9 for the oddest intro ever XD metal gears kinda poo i just stuck it in there to show you where it all started, the real show stoppers are another world, shinobi, and hitch hikers.. but it is up to you to add more games so better get your ftp on get the knack of setting stuff up

but after saying all that i may do a second polished off version.. just that i wanted to do some other stuff for a change.

I'll try that, oh and don't worry I've played all of those games at one time or another back in the day. If you want to try a real pile of dog **** get castlevania for DOS, its laughably bad. Shame I can't get Fallout or Carmageddon to run full speed. If you want any old ass dos game samson I got a torrent from a while back with 893 dos games, if you need any let me know.

have you already tried Windows NT4?

no because its using dosbox to boot, and it cant do NT or its well slow i did a fair bit of reading up, i think thats when it all changed from 16bit to 32 bit.. not tried doing a otherOS build , my linux is a bit rusty.
i'm gonna play with dosbox a lot more and mpxplay is a heavy proggy so if i get that running smoother i can apply the same fixes to windos i've already found a lot about tweaking the sound buffer pre-load without crashing.. so its a good little side project for me.

and you can never have too many mp3 players XD

i can do a simple quick mibbit web app if you want, i have tried on windows 3.1 internet and network is a pain because its all old school and dosbox needs a server.

lol , thanks you made me smile with that no its 16bit and also running on dosbox that can only emulate a slow 486 or pentium.. i wouldn't even recommend trying it, you could mess up by making the whole hdd fat32 or something along them lines.

Anyone tried Star Control 2 I tried Star Control 2, and i've gotten all the setup stuff for the keys to work, and the patch to remove the cp, and all i've managed to get to appear is the accolade load screen, then freeze. tried the dos session, that didn't even make it to there. Anyone?

      Confirmed working games:
      King's Quest 1
      King's Quest 2
      King's Quest 3
      King's Quest 4
      King's Quest 6
      Space Quest 1
      Space Quest 2
      Space Quest 3
      Quest for Glory 1
      Quest for Glory 2
      Dune 2
      Dungeon Master
      Warcraft
      Battle Chess
      Eye of the Beholder 1
      Eye of the Beholder 2
      Eye of the Beholder 3
      Might & Magic 3

Confirmed not-working properly yet(may be due to settings):
Quest for Glory 3 - loads menu then video garbled
      Star Control 2
Star Control 2 Melee working extremely slow... think I'd have to increase the cycles significantly.

Note: I have noticed on quite a few games involving mouse, if you move the mouse out of the screen area you can either end up with odd graphical glitches or game freezing, seems to be a dosbox mouse related issue.

I also recommend using HDIR.COM as it makes it easier to view directory structure. just copy it to some place and set it in the path (for example: If you put the file in C:\windows\system then type "path C:\windows\system" without the quotes.) This will allow you to type hdir from folder and have a nice custom layout of a folder that is easy to see.

HDIR.COM can be found HERE along with many other useful old dos utilities.

Edit 2: Sweet Dune 2 Working! now just to get Star Control 2 working.
Edit 3: Star Control 2 Melee working extremely slow... think I'd have to increase the cycles significantly. does seems strange that dune2 plays flawlessly with no reduced speed or audio and Star Control 2 struggles like a super slow slug.
Edit 4: Warcraft runs great too.

Thanks I will give it a shot and post results. :D

Edit: Bad news I'm afraid. Star Control II does not run off of dos4GW, so there's no editing a .bat call for it to load dos32a renamed as dos4gw. Interesting information though. However all the games I've tested so far that do use dos4gw work fine with the exception of mouse off screen issues. It'll be interesting to test those with that dos32a to see if there is any increase in speed.. not that it appears to be much needed.

I'm still convinced it's an issue with the filter/scaler being used for the graphics. Star Control II runs of individual sprites for each direction of each ship movement, and control images on the right.. so it's constantly being filtered numerous times for each sprite. May be the cause for the ENORMOUS slow down. Could be wrong though.
