Here is my tutorial on how to install an IR adapter and optional extra USB port in your PS3 and a couple of tips on setting up a Harmony remote.
Items you need:
AUVIO™ Universal Remote Receiver for Playstation®3 (Costs $3 on Radio Shack website)
USB Hub
Dremel (Optional)
Female USB Connector (Optional)
Soldering Iron
Some Solder
Flux (Optional but preferred)
Some Wire
Hot Glue Gun
Drill (I used a 5/32″ drill bit)
Universal Remote (Preferably a Harmony)
Lets get started. Obviously first you will need to disassemble your Playstation all the way down to being able to take off the metal shielding on the bottom of the motherboard, there are plenty of tutorials on how to do this (Fat, Slim) so I will not get into that. Here is what you need to look for once you have the motherboards bottom shielding off.

Start by applying some flux to the USB pins and then soldering the wires to it like so.

The wires should be hot glued down and curved over like so, then you can replace the metal shielding on the motherboard and slip it back into place.

Now you will need to take apart your USB hub and remove the male connector and solder the wires from the USB port to it.

Next remove the female USB connectors and prepare the wires for the IR adapter and the extra female USB if you choose to do it.

Next solder up the IR adapter and sensor.

Now you can drill the hole for the sensor. I put mine in between the wifi antennas.

Now it is time to slip the hub, IR adapter, and IR sensor into place. I put the hub next to the hard drive, the IR adapter partially under the fan, and hot glued the IR sensor in the hole. I also applied hot glue to every open contact on the bottom of the IR adapter because it is going to be resting on metal. Don’t want to cause any shorts.

Now if you choose to do the extra USB connector you can put it next to the fan. Use a dremel to cut the hole. I used a crap load of hot glue to secure it in place.

Now it is time to set everything and tidy up the wires. I also put hot glue on the open contacts on the bottom of the hub as well to keep the metal on metal contact from happening.

When it comes time to put the lid back on, 2 posts are going to have to be cut off.

When screwing the lid back on remember the posts you cut off and not to shove the screws into those holes.
Now when you are setting up your Harmony remote (mine is a 688) for it you will want to choose “DVD”, manufacturer “Sony”, and the model number “BDP-S350″. You are going to need to customize the buttons if you want the “OK” and “Stop” buttons to work. All you have to do is make the command for the Stop button “Select” and the command for the OK button “Stop”. Update your remote and you are all set. It even works in Multiman.

Great mod, looks good. good tutorial too, does it work the same if you have something plugged into the usb port you soldered the wires to?

Great tutorial and great hardware mod. I love seeing these tutorials showing something new surface, good job.

I actually didn't check to see what happens when something is plugged into that port. I whipped that up before I had to go to work. I will check when I get home.

Lol, I can't believe I didn't even think about it. I have something in mind that would hopefully remedy the problem should it exist
Will be checking it out as soon as I am done work.

Plugging in another USB device will likely result in both not working. You might have some success in cutting the D+ and D- Traces (the two in the middle) and soldering a cheap hub in between them.

Nice mod. Wish it was posted last month before I bought a Blu-Link multi remote with blutooth, this is cheaper, but the remote does mean I don't have to open my PS3.

Good tutorial, but you've missed out an important part I feel.
You buy a USB hub (like this?).
But preferably a 2 port on. You then take the circuit board out of it, and remove one of the normal USB ports from the console.
In it's place you solder in the USB hub and reconnect the original USB port to the HUB's board. You then solder the IR board to the HUB board rather than the mother board.
That way you would have your front port and a working IR receiver at the same time. And more ports too if you made the holes for them.
Just my 2p.

I updated the original tutorial. It did not work without a hub in between the usb port. I also threw in some instructions on adding and extra port. Still cant use the front one but replace it with the one on the side.

I still think it could be alot cleaner. I am also unhappy about the front USB port still not working even though I added another to make up for it. I am not too happy about my first contribution to the scene being such a half assed one. Once I get some more time with it I am going to make it all work better and hopefully cut out some of the cable length needed. It will definately be a more complicated process but it will be worth it. I will probably also completely redo the tutorial. Good thing I am comfortable with trace cutting

Infact, you can ignore the + and - wires from the hub, those aren't necessary.

Honestly, it doesnt look very nice... first of all, alot of people with HDTV's have something called HDMI control. just enable it in the system settings on the ps3.
secondly, if you WANT to hack your ps3 apart, please make it look better than this hackjob..

......or you could just buy a usb ir sensor on newegg for $6.99 and save all the work of soldering & possibly messing up your console

@vaalir
Didn't your mother ever teach you if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. And just like anyone on any scene forum that is not a total flamer would say. If you don't like it than do a better job yourself and if you can't perhaps you should just keep your mouth shut.
@lightyear
the whole mod revolves around a USB it adapter. I believe I listed that as the first thing you would need. The point of the mod is to have what it should have had built in all along. Never having to worry about weather or not you have some stupid dongle plugged in just so you can use your remote on your PlayStation. Just being able to pick up one remote and start watching movies or listening to music.

Wow, negative comments are no good. I have no need for the ir sensor but i like the idea of some extra usb ports built in (i really dont like having a hub hanging out of my ps3). If someone can point me to a tut for adding a couple more then id be grateful.
Thanks

It looks like I wont be redoing my tut. Camera just broke.

but to go deeper than just me saying "hackjob"...
Ok, first of all, nice tutorial. Nicely worded and lots of pictures for easy reference.
the end result is what is bothering me, you didnt make it look nice. the IR port you made looks awful, you could have made it smaller, and were the extra USB port is, it looks like you went crazy with a sanding machine or something... hence, hackjob.
i REALLY dont want to **** on your parade, but there are a lot of people who do tutorials point by point with no flair of their own. i wouldn't want that everyone that followed this tutorial ended up with that result. its SERIOUSLY ugly! good concept, but you were too hasty in your work, wanting to brag and make a tut i presume...
also, as i said earlier; alot of modern HDTV's have something called HDMI control, rendering this useless.
and i sincerely apologise for my bluntness in my previous post, and this one.
