Recently Gitbrew told us about their partial RSX driver in the works. Today they have tweeted about the release of FreeBSD LiveCD supporting resolutions upto 1920×1080 with the obvious partial RSX driver (PS3 “graphics card”).

This is for those interested in Linux on their PS3, nothing related to CFW or PC games running on PS3.

Their site might be hammered at the moment with high download amounts, but you can download the ISO for the CD right HERE. To learn how to get OtherOS++ on your PS3 read THIS.

Someone riddle me this . WTF is partial..is this thing working or not. In all my days messing with drivers for devices I never seen a partial driver.

What's the use of rsx drivers if there are no pc games supported.

It's labeled partial due to it's limited capabilities. The driver is incomplete, but the people at gitbrew are nice enough to give us a taste of what's working.

I hope this isn't one of those "if you wanted this you had it already" releases and "if you don't know what this is then you don't need it" type of deals.

I dont even know what this does but anything helps! Nice release

We always had 1080p support. Do they mean that playing a 1080p movie file won't stutter anymore?

Ah it is partial because it's limited / beta, it's only supported 1080p, nothing under it, that includes 1080i. We're still slowly adding in the rest of the functions to it so that everything else can be used (if you used openclit you would have these already js, you just can't use the rsx for game usage, processing data however can be done EASILY). Gitbrew randomly got hit with a surge of traffic from the git repos. We're working on getting it back up asap.

OoZic, you can install freebsd onto the console as well works better then debian at times. wireless for slims and rsx for phat and slims . If it's buggy at all, Report in the irc and we'll fix it immediately while also implementing the rest of the functionality. Without everyone else reporting bugs and errors we can not fully make a working driver! So if anyone starts *****ing that **** doesn't work, tell them to come to us and tell us what's ****ing up

gitbrew is down because it was hacked into, and being re-directing to some stupid flash website. As of now it is simply offline. So if you are having problems they go beyond just heavy traffic.

EDIT: also if it has been hacked just be careful about what you have DL'ed on that site , you don't know for how long this has been going on for, and what are the repercussions of a possible hack.

I hope that gitbrew will shed some light on the situation.

.
It wasn't hacked, lol. We redirected it to nyan.cat due to the fact either the git repos are being majorly hit or due to a ddos. We're currently finding out what was causing it originally.

Also if you didn't know what nyan.cat was... well now you do , everyone needs a bit of nyan cat in their life :P

seems like a ddos to me, so I also presumed hacked as well when I see a redirect of the main page, but I have been corrected on the second part.. thx for the feedback.

I wish I had time to experiment with it. But for the next couple of months I am only able to read the news to have something other on my mind as my normal troublesome life atm.
Maybe when I need some distraction I will install it, but I don't think I can concentrate myself enough to be helpful for now. To much on my mind like I said. But I keep being curious about the rsx part (I know it is beta and not for games) so who knows

My problem with testing this stuff out on my slim has always been that the rebug +otherOS custom firmware didn't work with some of my games. Shame as I love Linux and would be keen to play with it otherwise. Still give it time I suppose! Early days yet!

Great to see the progress that's being made here now that we have a good resolution and wifi up and going I'm positively getting excited. Think it will be the time to take the plunge or at the very least dip my feet into the pool soon!

I don't know what is up with gitbrew, but the situation seems to be getting worst , not only are the code repositories no longer online, the binary repositories are offline as well, and the mirrors are only up to date as of a week ago, and nothing has been posted on twitter for 3 days.

Anyone know whats up? Is otheros++ dead?

First of all hi there you guys and ladies..!
last 24 hrs i was trying to install and run that **** (linux) on my slim PS3 16mb(nor) originally KMEAW 3.55 CFW nailed on it and i faced with so many stupid problems which is caused by me or my console or those people introducing themselfs as a Hacker...and im now here to explore to find out what the exact problem was or problems were...so let then this story begin from its beginning...

06 october 2011 around 1030lt somehow i finally made a decision to install one of the linux distros
out there on my ps3 which is not a necessity but an interest because i dont need it...
then started to search on the net how this could be done correctly and found which is firstly installing
CFW355-OTHEROS++-22GB on my slim ps3 then restoring ps3 system and got 111GB/149GB and then installing
setup_flash_for_otheros and restarting the console..and installing install_otheros.pkg with usb dtbImage.ps3.bin
( which is exactly dtbImage.ps3.bin.minimal for 16mb nor) including in it and then installing boot_otheros and
then installing reboot and restarting and getting the petitboot screen...everything is ok till here..
but then exit to shell and trying to run create_hdd_region.sh first with this command

rootps3-linux:$ cd /tmp/petitboot/mnt/sda1 enter
rootps3-linux:$/tmp/petitboot/mnt/sda1/chmod a+x create_hdd_region.sh enter to make it executable..
create_hdd_region.sh read-only system file
rootps3-linux:$chmod 755 create_hdd_region.sh enter and again the same ****in read-only error
rootps3-lin..._hdd_region.sh enter and finally work ok thank GOD and reboot from the command
for rebooting the system..now im in xmb menu and run reboot.pkg again and now petitbot again..

ok now im using parted command..as below ;
1. parted /dev/ps3dd
2. mklabel gpt
3. mkpart primary 0 2GB
4. print
5. mkpart primary 2GB and asking end? 22GB and enter and print again then i see 2 parts
first one starting from 17.5kb to 2GB and second one 2GB to 22GB as we wanted..ok but
those read only file system errors everywhere especially rebooting escaping from petitboot..

ok now i choose ubuntu-10.04-alternate-powerpc+ps3.iso downloaded from here :
http://mirrors.med.harvard.edu/ubunt...owerpc+ps3.iso

burned it to cd-r with 4x speed successfully then put it while on xmb menu and press reboot.pkg to start petitboot..petitboot started and which saw the disc and ubuntu and i choose install ubuntu 10.04 bla bla bla..
and system going down... and started to load ubuntu..ok very good..

but when i came to partioning phase that ****ing ubuntu couldnt see our /dev/ps3dd part..that **** only see /dev/ps3da or smthing like that i couldnt remember, which is the whole part of the HDD including GameOS...and i continue to installing with this shape(it took 3.5 hours) because im very angry i know that this is wrong because when we reboot the machine it will ask ps3 hdd corrupted and must be formatted..
NOOOOO not now and started petitboot again and load ubuntu and login screen come...and now im on gnome desktop..everything is working but a little bit slow..internet is working..even i login my facebook account
to taste of ps3 ubuntu atmosphere before formatting everything :-)

then i formatted hdd and refresh everything again and now choose Freebsd distro and found it from here:
http://www.ps3hax.net/2011/09/gitbre...driver-support

but while i choose to start installing on petitboot screen it doesnt work in every resolution options and always read-only filesystem errors every where again......and i think this is because the fault of those HACKERS... not me or my ps3 console they couldnt access ps3 hdd even we can login ?on petitboot as a root...? or is there a command to remove read-only file sytem error which is releated to mounting issues i suppose..

NOW PLS SOMEONE a real hacker maybe COULD HELP ME....

Dump this to me
cat /dev/ps3d* > ps3d.txt and paste it here / pastebin. also, you have to unmount and then remount to make the file systems r/w instead of read only. (Reason i asked for you to dump the above is because the create_region_hdd.sh might not have worked, in which case is just annoying but an easy fix.)
Gitbrew is very much alive and well, we're slowly working on things still.
Recently my slim ps3 broke and the only thing it could do for a while was stream. Now it's at the point where i can't even do that anymore. So i had to back away for a bit until i can get a new one sadly. .
Glevand still hard at work and reported that 95% of lv1 hvc have been documented.
As soon as we get the wiki back to r/w mode we can start adding the new stuff.
The git was taken down due to massive fluctuation in bandwidth that ACTUALLY took the server down quite a few times.
Foxbrew.org and gotbrew.org are the official mirrors until we find a sutible replacement for the git repos (note we're still trying to retain user privacy so finding a provider that allows us access and doesn't log is quite annoying ).
I'll be checking up these threads daily to answer what i can, but would perfer if people came to the irc for help. Much faster .

http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php...059#post263059
(he fixed the r/w mount problem himself, I thought it was because of the wrong 22Gb disk size)
--------

I have tried FreeBSD now but got a kernel error right after I start the disk with petitboot. is this a known problem? Maybe because it looks at the installed Red Ribbon distro kernel on the HD?
I only have a IRC program without ssl, otherwise I would jump to your IRC for this problem.

FreeBSD loader needs petitboot first:
http://wiki.gitbrew.org/wikibrew/PS3..._OtherOS.2B.2B

How to setup petitboot is in the normal OtherOS++ pages:
http://wiki.gitbrew.org/wikibrew/PS3...S.2B.2B_How-To

Unless you are a dev I wouldn't recommend FreeBSD for now, normal users should use Red Ribbon or Ubuntu or Debian... FreeBSD RSX support is very beta and if you want XMBC I think you have to wait a little longer.... Just watch the front page because if a dev manages to run XMBC it will be front paged for sure
