Sony is rolling out PS3 FW 4.0 this week in prep for PSVita’s launch.
To quote:
A new system software update (v4.00) will be released this week. In preparation for the launch of PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) in Japan, this update will prepare PlayStation 3 (PS3) to serve as a content management device. It will allow users to copy their digital content such as games, music, photos, and videos between PS Vita and PS3, back up PS Vita game games including save data to your PS3 hard drive, and update the system software for your PS Vita system using the network features of your PS3.
Other changes to take effect with this update include:
- PlayStation Plus members can now choose to enable or disable each automatic update feature
- Game patches
- System software
- Recommended games and videos
- Sync trophy information
- New PlayStation Network settings for filtering friend requests and messages
Looks like we can finally stop asking for CFW 3.7x and start asking for CFW 4.X!

I'm gonna update. No security patches in the whats new so I'll give it a go so I can keep playing online. I can't wait for the PS3 to be as cracked as the PSP.
Oh and they added a safety screen when the PS3 first turns on :/ lame!

From the looks of it, this was more of a feature upgrade than a security upgrade, so I bet KaKaRoToKS' 3.73 exploit still works.
Also, updates like this one are when Sony tends to make some big mistakes. How much do ya wanna bet adding all the Vita/PS3 connectivity features to the PS3 opened up a hole to exploit?

I've noticed a few people commenting to the effect that no security patches have been advertised, which is generally accepted as a good thing for Kaka's possible upcoming exploit.
Why is everyone taking Sony for their word? Isn't it possible that they've changed a key or two or beefed up security and just didn't announce it for this patch? Considering the distrustful things they've done in the past, I wouldn't trust them at all...

Hmm just looked at the update...its apparently optional and those on 3.73 or later don't need to install this. So I'm guessing keys are the same. I see nothing about security patches so I am still betting that KaKaRoToKS exploit still works on this 4.0 update.

The PSP Scene on the other hand, the cat and mouse game has ended in the Scene's favor. PSP users can do anything they want really with Sony unable to stop them due to signed homebrew.
As for the Vita, I do not see it getting hacked too soon. It could probably have firmware restrictions like the PS3 with PSN. Both consoles need to be up to date to connect to each other, or something like that.

Sony are only winning in half of the scene.
Anyone on a vulnerable firmware still have homebrew. They can never take that fact away so as far as I see it, its still a win for us
This may come as a surprise to most but I am 100% happy with a company securing their product so if psvita being secure means updating the ps3 security also, then so be it, good for them, but what I do not agree with is the way they act towards us when they make mistakes and leave vulnerabilities.

Mmmmm I wonder what ofw 4.0 has to offer though I think updating now (unless you have a spare console) is kind of dumb since its jumping into something new that has not had a proper look at yet (well to my belief) but im just saying this coz I want homebrew on 3.73 which KaKaRoTo is working on :D
Though I would like to see 4.0.
I wonder if $ony would stop homebrew on any firmware even if it did not have and ties to piracy?

x-mas is a ripe time for homebrew because everyone would rather be working on hacking projects than spending time with their family.... or at least I would :D
On a side note, you better believe Sony will patch whatever hole Kaka uses to make homebrew work even though it won't allow for backups... anybody remember the days WAAAAY back when there was the java for the blu-ray exploit and there was a working NES emulator that used it? I do and yeah, they patched it with the next firmware even though it only allowed for stuff coded in java.

We just need the keys...if we can get keys we can hack the games themselves. I really don't care about a new CFW as long as I can play new games...Sony is only adding features where they sell Sony products; they can't be bothered to do anything useful like making the PS3 play MKV files or something.

Most people need to realize that 4.00, just because it has a much higher version number, is not a completely different firmware. 4.00 is as different from 3.73 as 3.73 is from 3.70. Sony just uses the 4.00 number for marketing purposes (Vita).
What cannot be updated is bootldr, and bootldr contains the lv0 key, meaning they cannot change that key, allowing us to decrypt any current and future lv0.
I don't even know what to say...
It's not a matter of being familiar with it or not, it's a matter of reading or not. Which you apparently don't do.

9 out of 10?? That's a great ratio. I'd say mine were 5 out of 10, because of the ref frames. Showtime doesn't play anything over 5 ref frames and 4.1 sound I believe. Although, you can adjust the ref frames/fps with the mkv software created by deanK.

Why I have this feelig that we won't get CFW any time soon. I think that we gonna be on 3.55 for a LOOOONG ASS TIME. Just think about it...
Mathieulh decrypts LV0 at FW 3.73 so it's not a CFW which means that it wont run any BackUp's unless some one will fix it. (So it's kinda useless? ..for now)
KaKaRoToKS has this fight with some gay ass leaker (solved). Also KaKaRoToKS's post's are useless since all he does is TROLLING (I created a CFW 3.73 but I won't release it so yea.. in your fu face). (Usefull? NO!)
TB2JB, E3 Flasher, CobraUSB and all those <---- things are useless. My d*ck is more usefull than this crap.
These things ruins PS3Scene because everything was free before and shared between other devs/users. And I don't see XBOX devs asking for money of they work (but XBOX is obviously much easier to JB and MS don't update their sys. like Sony does 24/7).

1. Math is stuck up. He decrypted lv0, maybe, but that helped no one. He trolls the scene by saying he did it first when devs release something. Then when he actually does something himself, he never releases it.
2. Kakarotoks IS DEVELOPING his 3.73 Jailbreak. Why should he release a non-working JB? Kakaroto, if you have not noticed has released his work in the past and said he will release the 3.73 JB when it is ready.
3. You cannot easily JB an Xbox. If you think that, you are pretty ignorant. To allow unsigned code to run on a 360, you need to solder. You need to modify the consoles internal parts (Jtag and the new mod). Even then it is not possible on all consoles. To hack the DVD drive, yeah, it is pretty simple, but you still have to open the console and connect it to your computer, but all that allows you to do is play pirated games. I highly doubt many people use it for legitimate back ups. Even if they do, they are far outweighed by pirates. Which brings me to the part where I point out that the Xbox Scene is a warez scene. Most people do not have a Jtag or equivalent, they just hack the DVD drive and pirate everything they can. Also, Microsoft hands out bans to people that have a modded Xbox, I have not ever heard of Sony doing such a thing back when we had PSN on CFW.

Well, one thing cool that OFW 4.00 does: It FINALLY fixes reading the meta tags on iTunes AAC files. The PSP could always see track names, artists, album, etc. It only took the PS3 5 years to fix that. Now my legit PS3 might actually be a decent music player since it's hooked to surround sound.
