• PS3 Hacks, Rumour , 28.03.2012

November will be the PS3′s sixth birthday and there is no doubt that Sony are thinking about or planning their next console, which will start rumours flying around, Kotaku have learned some details of Sony’s next gen console, whether these details turn out to be true, only time will tell, here are some of those rumours:

    • Codename/Working Name – Orbis
    • Release Date – Holiday Season 2013
    • CPU – AMD x64 CPU
    • GPU – AMD Southern Islands GPU

Not a lot of detail, but considering this is a rumour and the ‘PS4′ probably wont be released for at least another two years, only time will tell, the sooner developers get their hands on devs machines, the closer we will be to learning machine specs, anyhow, here are some more details, some of what seem a bit controversial:

    • Orbis games will have a resolution up to 4096×2160.
    • It will be able to play 3D games in true 1080p.
    • It wont be able to play PS3 games.
    • Will lock new games to a PSN account as an anti-used games measure, thus killing off the possibility to buy pre-owned games.
    • Games will be on Blu Ray or downloaded straight from PSN/SEN or whatever they decide to call it by then.

    Silly fact.
Vita is Latin for Life, whilst Orbis is Latin for Circle, so when the Orbis is released, the two combined will complete the “Circle Of Life” :p

    UPDATE

Kotaku have managed to get hold of an image, that seems to be a feature of the Orbis:

It wont be able to play PS3 games.
...until Wololo or the likes get their hands on it.

While the inability to play PS3 games is somewhat understandable if they are completely redoing the architecture of their machine, it still makes me angry. But no used games, and even games bought on discs still being locked to an SEN account. Sony can **** off. Way to do what your publishers want versus your customers.

You can't win against an i7 or an octo (PC) So i wish the next wave of consoles have more user friendly interface and more solid communication/interaction with any PC.

What planet are they living on? The 7900 GPUs are powerful but, 4096x2160 is quite a stretch. They would need to offer a free connection service to effectively implement account locking. I don't know about anyone else but, I'd rather not sit around and wait for a 20GB download if I could go to the store and pick up a copy.

the future = non tangible edition games anymore, no more boxes no more nothing. All *direct to drive* thing.
Personally i will hate to have more than 500gb of games purchased on a server of sony (in this case).

I don't care if it can't play PS3 games. I like how out of nowhere, people started complaining about BC this gen. Nobody complained when the Gamecube couldn't play N64 games. >.<

"Orbis games will have a resolution up to 4096×2160" if you believe that then you will believe that it comes with 2 HDMI ports.

Multiple ports would be required to push out a resolution like the one suggested.

I think people have starting thinking about how computers have backwards compatibility to as far as you please, whether it's through emulators, native support, a secondary OS, or patches.

At Gregory: Are you sure? My 20GB only has one HDMI port.

Cant really see the point here diff set up n media so not really the same tbh BC is just common sense tbh and also more user freindly but lets face it the only reason why its not gona be BC is cause the DPRM keys are bust open so if this was leaked or mainstream if the PS4 was BC the same vunrability would exsist on the new system for BC games ofcourse and would prob also give hackers a starting point

Who in their right mind would own Ps4 with knowing all that? Anti backward compatibility, not allowed to play pre ordered games. All those "lock" things that seem to be against all consumers. It's like they saying F U to all of us. And the resolution that high? You would have no way to even use the system. There is no tv cheap enough to go that high in resolution. Unless you got a 120 inch and even then I don't think that's big enough for that.

Intel/Nvidia is my way to go for PC power/graphics...

Said it before, still thinking about the Wii-U as next console

Btw, if you use SLI those resolutions can be reached

The only single TVs and monitors capable of the resolution are $10,000+.

At Oozic: Using SLI or Crossfire would result in higher console cost, power consumption, the need for good cooling, and a larger overall size of the console to make room for the cooling.

i'm pretty sure they have hdmi's that are close or can do 4K

It really does need bc though. i had a feeling next generation of gaming might suck...(if this is all true). It's just gotten too big so we need another suck period to weed out people just trying to fit in with others.

4K is an emerging standard for resolution in digital cinematography and computer graphics. The name is derived from the horizontal resolution, which is approximately 4,000 pixels. This designation is different from those used in the digital television industry, which are represented by the vertical pixel count; for example 480p, 576p, 720p, and 1080p. 4K represents the horizontal resolution because there are numerous aspect ratios used in cinema — so while the horizontal resolution stays constant, the vertical resolution depends on the video source (a.k.a. letterboxing). There are several different resolutions that qualify as 4K. As of 2012, YouTube is the only video hosting service that allows 4K videos to be uploaded (at a resolution of up to 4096 x 3072).

      28" to 60" 4K TV's no need for an 120" monstrosity.

Anything past 1080p seems too far off to be thinking of currently. Personally I see no need for end users to have that high of a resolution these days. Maybe more so into the future.

Our eyes can only see so much. Then again, i remember it like it was yesterday everybody was bashing HDTV saying how there's no difference and they liked their SDTV just fine. Still hear people saying that but i've managed to convert many nay-sayers into the goodness of HD etc.

Also, I'd like to say I will not be buying this closed down unit but, who knows in the future. Everything is all rumours right now so there's really no point in being all pro or against.

Vita/Orbis = Vida Circular or La Orbita de la Vida (Orbit of Life) = Not precisely to life circle or cycle of life.
Orbis (Latin) = refers to Orbita (spanish)

P.s: I know spanish and Latin and both have various similarities.

Hope Microsoft don't use latin too for any future proyect..so cliche.

Whatever Sony decide to do with it, unless it can play PS3 games they can suck my hairy bits lol, and even if it does I will wait and buy one second hand as they sank their boat for me and support/respect with their attitude in the last 18 months

The PS3 was fun, but if I want better game-play and specs, I will just build a decent gaming PC.

Tell that to game developers, even with a decent system or high end. Alan wake was released 1 month (or more) ago.
So as far we have decent systems, they went multiplatform. Don't give a damn about developing something worth to *buy* always the top priority is consoles in terms of new releases.

Eventually consoles won't exist and everything will be handheld. You'll do everything on your cell phone (or whatever we use in place of those). You'll be able to plug your phone into your television and use it to play games on your TV, and when you leave, you'll be able to play games on the go.

That is basically Sony's way of telling me not to buy a PS4 until it gets hacked.
I want the option to buy used and i want the option to play on more they one ps3 without having to be signed in. If this ends up being true i can only hope no one buys any. Maybe lowest console sales ever would convince Sony to care about their customers again

I highly doubt that restitution will be the default . It is probably something like the ps3 supports lower resolution like 480p lower + up to 1080p. This could be just the maximum resolution it can put out. People don't be dumb ,don't buy SEN games from Sony ! When you press the (BUY) button "YOU ARE PRESSING THE => (RENTING) THE GAME BUTTON" !

The SEN games is tied & activated = Sony's control , haven't you are who bought them PSN learned your lesson yet.? I did ,i have not bought a game in 8 months from sony/PSn/SEN. You are throwing your money away=(YOU DON'T OWN IT, OR MOVIES !). Buy your games from the store. You don't have any strings attached = No activation, you can play your game without needing Sony to activate the game offline ! If the retail game tied to SEN would be true ,sorry but buying a PS4 = You are being a fool ! Not being able to play PS3 games or used games just makes no sense at all . What does Sony expect people to do if they sell there PS4 ? That is ok we will just throw our money & our games away !!

Man if any of this is true, i hope people wake the hell up. Read before you buy . I would not doubt if when the PS4 does come out "you will have to agree to some anti hacking agreement => ( "You do not own the console" = Blah ,Blah Blah) ! Sony is beginning to be the (console killer) of the gaming industry & i hope other console makers will not be dumb enough to follow a corp as stupid as Sony !

If sony is going to tie retail games now to 1 person/console ,etc/no used games. If you get bored with your game or just don't like it & want to sell the game or return = You cant after trying it ? => (You are getting robbed BLIND). If all this is in any way true. I hope there move will destroy the PlayStation all together & sony & the people who come up with this nonsense "BURN IN HELL". They are so obsessed on controlling us ,that gaming is not even going to be fun no more. Gaming is starting to sound like politics & if this is the route gaming is going (OBSESSED/CONTROL) ?

I will keep my (x3) CFW PS3s , (x1) OFW & say hello to any game console but sonys ! I am happy to see XboX is moving to better things. For people that luv PS3 controller like myself ,or find XboX controller hard to get used to.? You can use a PS3 controller on XboX with a conversion cable That is all i need, a PS3 controller on the XboX & i am all good ! The controller makes the console in my book. If a controller is perfect for you ,them your game play will be to. The lack of controller choices is my reason to have sold, my XboX in the past.

The only way i am going to even consider buying a new console from sony, is an 'open' platform in which we can make our own apps/widgets/software for...

We are locked out from these machines from the time we purchase them...
I am sick of the restrictions!

      Couple of things:

Sony have done quite a lot this generation to "cheese" me off. So if they want me to buy their next console, they damn well better make it a good one.

Sounds of it so far, while very little detail, doesn't seem to be worth the upgrade from ps3 yet.

No backwards compatibility, yeah okay, I can clearly see why. They are changing the CPU architecture from PPC to x86, so running a PPC game on x86 would require some emulation, namely, of all the PS3's hardware, it is extremely unlikely that they would be able to do that without it being extremely slow with todays technology. So the no BC is understandable.

No second hand games? Talk about "We want to control you" attitude. That is a dealbreaker for me.

I think I may just stick to my PS3...

You both could be right, but then rumours that came out a couple of years before the device was announced, have come true before.

Look at this information, from 6th of June 2009, regarding the PS Vita:
Part of the information we have spoken of as an essential component in a video game system such as your graphics processor. In this case would be based on a multicore version of SGX543 of Imagination Technologies, which supplies, among other things, the graphics chips mounted iPhones. Would have 4 cores and its internal codename would hydra. One approach would raise peak performance up to 133 million polygons per second, surpassing the original Xbox.
      http://psvitahistory.consolehistories.net/?page_id=6

It wasn't until nearly two years later, on the 27th of January 2011, that some of those above rumours came true.....

      Found this curious:

Sony is working on a new PlayStation machine. According to the story Kotaku broke, it's called Orbis. That could be a codename—it also might be the console's final name.

There are some reasons why Sony might not choose to call its machine the PlayStation 4. In Japan, four (四) can be read as "yon" (よん) or "shi" (し). The kanji for death is "shi" (死), which is why the number four is considered unlucky. While its origins are very different, it's akin to the number 13 in the West.

That's why when you give people presents in Japan, you would not give them four of something. If possible, you'd give them, for example, three cakes—or five—instead of four. Some buildings in Japan don't have fourth floors—especially hospitals, which never keep patients on the fourth floor. It's also why you don't see a lot of products with the number four in it.

What you do see is a bunch of video game titles with "four" in it. Mario Party 4, Ace Attorney 4, Yakuza 4—Japanese game companies don't skip over the four iteration out of superstition.

And when the four iteration pops up, the games are not usually called, for example, Mario Party Shi. Rather, Mario Party 4 is called "Mario Party Four" (マリオパーティフォー) in Japanese. So even something like Ace Attorney 4, which has a Japanese title full of kanji (逆転裁判4), becomes "Gyakuten Saiban Four".

"Four" (フォー) is an easy way for Japanese people to separate "4" from its Japanese counterpart—and the superstitious it contains.

In Japan, the PlayStation 2 is called the "PlayStation Two" or the "PS Two" and not the "PS Ni", with "ni" (二) being "two" in Japanese. Likewise, the PlayStation 3 is called the "PlayStation Three" or the "PS Three" in Japanese and not the "PS San"; "san" (三) is "three" in Japanese.

The PlayStation brand is very strong, and its something Sony won't ditch no matter what the Tokyo-based electronics giant calls its next game machine. If Sony does dub its next PlayStation console the PlayStation 4, people will call it the "PlayStation Four" in Japanese. However, that doesn't mean Japanese people won't make death puns if the console flounders. They will.

Ah ****, I pressed the back button by accident right before I wanted to say something.

I hope they release a deluxe launch model with onboard EE+GS+Cell+RSX so that I can play my entire library of PS1/2/3 games. Then they can start removing important features like usual until they get a piece of poop slim. "It does nothing errr everything!"

Give me pre owned PC crap instead.
Of course they won't kill the secondary market. You can sell your games and buy pre owned games. You will have to get a "playing license" through PSN though, probably at least $10-15 a piece.

Interesting handsaw design posted there LOL

PS. Second hand games sell for 10-15usd, so the second hand dealers will need to sell their games for $0 !!! interesting profitability there.
