    PlayStation 3 homebrew developer, glevand, has released a custom firmware that will boot your PlayStation 3 directly into petitboot, which then presents you with the option of immediately booting your console into GameOS or Linux. After several hours of experimentation, glevand was finally successful and his theories regarding the GameOS loader were proven correct. The developer proudly released his firmware along with the following statement:

    YAY Smile

    Got cold boot working on PS3 SlimSmileSmileSmile
    My theory was right, i patched the initial GOS loader in process 9 of LPAR1 and it works now.
    I can cold boot my petitboot with just pressing power button once.

    This article contains no information regarding PlayStation 3 exploiting, hacking, glitching or modding. Continue reading at your own risk.

    By this point in time, I believe it’s safe to assume we’ve all been well acquainted with the Grand Theft Auto series in one way, shape or form. Whether you’ve only heard about it online, played it at a friends house or even own all of the games dating back to 1997 when it first launched on the original PlayStation. Whatever the case may be, I’m sure we can all agree on one thing: Grand Theft Auto is a booming success and is one of the most iconic franchises in video game history.

    But, what exactly has made Grand Theft Auto so popular? And why do you like it so much? Are you attracted to the complex storylines? Does playing beyond the confines of the linear-style gameplay that you’re used to induce your brain with the sense of “freedom”? Is it the senseless killing that’s caught your attention? Or, is it The Message?

    Now you’re probably asking yourself, “What’s The Message?” The answer is simple: The American Dream.

    (Which understandably also translates into anything in life you’ve ever wanted to achieve with the odds stacked against you, because everybody is not in pursuit of the American Dream.)

    The Bigger Picture:

    In every Grand Theft Auto game since Grand Theft Auto III -  I cannot speak on Grand Theft Auto or Grand Theft Auto II because my experience with them is either non-existent or is very limited - you play as a male protagonist going through insane obstacles from the get-go. In Grand Theft Auto III, you start the game as an escaped convict with nowhere to turn but a life of crime. In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, you start the game in debt to a mob boss who’s constantly threatening your life if you don’t find his damn money. In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, you start the game burying your mother who’s been shot and killed seemingly by a rival gang and because of this, it isn’t long before you’re brought back into the gang life, ducking corrupt police officers and wasting drug dealers. In Grand Theft Auto IV, you play as a foreign Russian who wants nothing more but freedom, however this vision is constantly challenged by mob bosses, loan sharks, your cousin’s cowardice and everything that goes with that.

    There is a reason Rockstar Games places you in these dire situations. It’s a demonstration of how far some are willing to go to achieve the inner-satisfaction we all crave deep down inside. You play through hundreds of missions pinned against enemies that want nothing more than to see you dead but for some reason you always overcome the danger. There is a reason why no matter how many times you “die,” your character manages to escape death at the last second and is treated at a local hospital. There is a reason why when police officers “bust” you and take you to jail, that they accept your bribes and you aren’t serving a life-sentence.

    Underlying the murder, mischief, sex, prostitution, corruption and hatred, is a message you’ve heard a million times: You can do anything you want to do as long as you work hard at achieving it.

    I don’t want to drag this on any longer than it needs to be. You get the point.

    That’s The Message.

    We all know about the conversion method CEX>DEX and the apps/tutorials/guides published on the board but searching something specific about can result in another new thread asking for something that was already posted or just difficult to find what we are searching for. So i came up with a *idea* to do some *Unique* thread in order to you get the info about the method, and all that i found published so far on HAX about the conversion.

    Thanks again to the one who dedicated hours, even days doing guides and tutorials about this. Keep in mind that neither I, or PS3HAX or even the members who made all of this to share with you are held responsable if anything happens to your PS3 system.

    P.s: I will keep updating the thread and mirroring some files in order to get all about the conversion in ONE place. Organized and Clean ;) feel free to add any other guide/tool/app.

    Famed homebrew developer PSDev, notorious for his work on applications such as PS3 Tools Gui Edition, has released a simple-yet-effective script that will aid fellow developers in deciphering PlayStation Vita update packages (.PUP files) by presenting you with basic information such as the package header and license files — the script is better known as PS Vita Magic Reader.

    On a side note: Most of the information regarding the PlayStation Vita and it’s update files has also been made available online via VitaDevWiki.

    More from PSDev:

    A while back as a test I made Magic Reader v1 that extracted the Magic (SCEUF), the FW version and license.xml out of the Vita PUP. Well I just added a extraction for the whole Vita Header of PUP.

    This script extracts the following:
    [*]PUP Version
    [*]Package Version
    [*]Image Version
    [*]File Count
    [*]Header length
    [*]Package length
    [*]A Unknown bit of values 0×50 in length
    [*]HeaderHashAlso later I’ll add a FileTable extractor. which is determined by the FileCount.

    This is a linux script and will run in any linux environment.

    # PsDev 2012. this script extract the PUP magic.
    #Edit from PsiColio lv1.self extractrion
    #just extracts the header info from a vita pup, good for comparison kinda useless atm and most likely always.

    # File names to extract from the PUP
    Extract=( “Magic” “PUPVersion” “License.xml” “PackageVersion” “ImageVersion” “FileCount” “HeaderLength” “PakageLength” “UNKNOWN” “FileTable” “HashTable” “HeaderHash” )

    #length starting from the offset and it ending in the offsets total length
    length=( 0×8 0×10 0x724B4 0×8 0×8 0×8 0×8 0×8 0×50 0×20 0×40 0×20) #how many long the file is how much to copy, for example the Magic starts at 0×0 and the length is 0×8 bytes.

    #offset of the Magic, Version and License
    offset=( 0×0 0x9FF 0xC00 0×8 0×10 0×18 0×20 0×28 0×30 0×80 0×100 0×130 ) #where the file dump begins in the hex.

    printf “____________________________n”
    printf ” PsDev n”
    printf ” Magic Reader n”
    printf “____________________________ nn”

    for file in “${Extract[@]}” #tells it for a file look in Extract = the the file names

    printf “____________________________ n”

    printf ” %sn” “${file}” #file name

    printf “____________________________ n”

    printf “offset= %sn” “${offset[$cont]}” #tells offset of file
    printf “length= %sn” “${length[$cont]}” #tells total offset length of file
    printf “%sn” “${cont}”

    dd if=$1 of=$file bs=1 obs=1 skip=$((${offset[$cont]})) count=$((${length[$cont]}))

    cont=$(($cont+1)) # make sure the usage is “./Magic-reader.sh PSP2UPDAT.PUP”

    How to:

    Make a new file named “Magic-reader.sh”
    Run “chmod +x Magic-reader.sh” to give to execution permissions
    Now in terminal run it. “./Magic-reader.sh PSP2UPDAT.PUP” It will output the three files in the folder/location the scripts located in.

    Example out of the old Terminal LOG in v1, not updated there is a lot more files:

    ./Magic-reader.sh PSP2UPDAT.PUP
    offset= 0×0
    length= 0×8
    8+0 records in
    8+0 records out
    8 bytes (8 B) copied, 0.0153084 s, 0.5 kB/s
    offset= 0x9FF
    length= 0×10
    16+0 records in
    16+0 records out
    16 bytes (16 B) copied, 0.0528894 s, 0.3 kB/s
    offset= 0xC00
    length= 0x724B4

    ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed.

    ScummVM supports many adventure games, including LucasArts SCUMM games (such as Monkey Island 1-3, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, …), many of Sierra’s AGI and SCI games (such as King’s Quest 1-6, Space Quest 1-5, …), Discworld 1 and 2, Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2, Beneath A Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress, Broken Sword 1 and 2, Flight of the Amazon Queen, Gobliiins 1-3, The Legend of Kyrandia 1-3, many of Humongous Entertainment’s children’s SCUMM games (including Freddi Fish and Putt Putt games) and many more.

    Little Red Riding Hood looking over at her grandmother’s latest install of ScummVM, noting the update to version 1.5.0 and asked “My what a lot of games you now support”. “All the better to entertain you with my dear!” responded the curiously grinning relative.

    We all love to feast on the most sumptuous of gaming titles and our latest release will fulfil your craving for even more classic point and click adventures.

    Version 1.5.0 adds support for Once Upon A Time: Little Red Riding Hood and the following titles:

    Backyard Baseball 2003
    Blue Force
    Darby the Dragon
    Gregory and the Hot Air Balloon
    Magic Tales: Liam Finds a Story
    Sleeping Cub’s Test of Courage
    The Princess and the Crab

    As always, there are many more new features; you can find the full list in our release notes and the release itself on our downloads page.

    Enjoy and hopefully you won’t find the big bad wolf who is sure to give you a byte!

    Many of you witness the whole *heavy traffic* that gave us more questions, guides, and new alternatives but something is missing…

    Dex the king of the hill:

    You now have the chance to convert your Retail conversion into a debug unit (of course if you didn’t notice you are just emulating a debug unit) But still you can have all the benefits if you choose to convert.
    Since this *filtered* info appeared into the scene we have all you need and want to explore your PS3 until certain limit. You have good guides, good articles, and many thread talking about the same.
    Dex seems to be on the TOP = VIP style right now.
    Sadly again the tools were posted and not too much information about the METHOD, hence we can say..we know a 34% about it. The rest is for the curious enough to try and also try to understand what this is about.

    E3 team:

    With their prior statements with a broken English worst than mine, they gave us candies. As many times i said they know they will butchered in some point, and honestly? i don’t blame the guys they just stepped on the wrong side of the track plus a very bad timing to *make the world to know* and re-afirm they are onto something. (Dongle related)
    Now (on these days) they appeared again with more *news*, they don’t wait too long to add the capabilities to their own hardware flasher to dualboot cex>dex among other interesting and confusing *promises*.
    And they don’t hesitate to release more EBOOTS, now with SH downpour and Grand Slam tennis.

    Sure, they can take the risk and release some *software solution*. As i stated before anyone can buy that *magical solution* and start to publish it in every scene sites but we know that when something like that is released and with good results, the file or files will spread as bad flu all over the place.

    So what’s the final objective of E3 team?:

    Simple answer? = To Wait, until someone drops the ball or steps out. They will keep feeding the users with candies and man!! *candies* are addictive, problem is if they fail to deliver what they promised some months ago. Generating more speculation than real facts.

    TB team:

    When someone is some much time in silence, it’s for a reason or we can say two reasons:

    1) As News get scarce, the EBOOTS as well as the SOURCE that provides the EBOOTS both of them are dry or maybe they just don’t reached a nice *number* to close the transaction.
    2) They are waiting as E3 Team to someone make a move and then strike back with more EBOOTS. (1 or 2 more don’t get excited)

    But you will notice something funny on all this, NEW EBOOTS releases are very scarce. I wonder why…and then i wonder why the two *TEAMS* are waiting for something. You can make up your own assupmtions on this area.

    Sony known about DEX already, (it’s nothing new) with this method released, legal actions towards some *TEAM* trying to encapsulate the method and sell it in some dongle manufactured in Shenzhen, they have enough proof to take down TWO birds with ONE single shoot.
    But with the price drop along with the annoucment of the new 4K series among other things. Many users will say they DON’T CARE! they don’g give a flying DAMN about DEX.
    Well…You are wrong.
    With DEX tools and DEX method and DEX guides being out, it’s quite the contrary they don’t care less. Something used by them was filtered, we are talking to convert your retail console to an *emulated* debug console. (At this rate you know the REAL price of a PS3 debug UNIT).
    And we know HOW angry they get when someone messes with their own software. Plus all the garbage about 4K series…please.

    So keep your eyes peeled, wait for more updates from E3/TB or some other stuff. And Enjoy your conversion.

    More news from the E3 team (mainly related to their E3 Flasher). They told us that the E3 flasher first off is able to downgrade to OFW 4.21 without any problems. In addition they tested the flasher and confirms it will successfully dual boot 3.55 DEX to CEX with no issues. They promise a simple DEX to CEX and vice versa solution via switch (for E3 Flasher users) very soon (for free).

    And in unrelated news they also told us that there is more good news on its way, and more free EBOOT releases.

    To quote:

    1: E3 Flasher downgrade and dual boot 4.21 OFW successfully . We also successfully dual boot DEX3.55-CEX3.55 . We are studying other dual boot way like DEX4.2-CEX4.21, DEX4.2-CEX3.55 which can help E3 flasher user enjoy more function .

    2: We are developing one key switch function for E3 flasher user. User convert DEX to CEX and CEX to DEX very easy ,just like our one key downgrade way.
    We will release it free for E3 flasher user when complete.

    3: We will release a great news for all PS3 user in next few days, and also with lots of free new game EBOOT .

    In june we saw the first leaked images of this new 4k series of PS3′S now according to some sources Sony will not announce it on gamescon = Agusts 14.
    Speculation around this whole new series keeps feeding the news site. Hence this is a *prior* step to the announcement of the PS4 (so they said) Something cheap to entertain a few while most of us still waiting for an official release date of *ORBIS*.
    They say that 16GB SKU is indeed REAL not a rumour but the problem or how to say it..the rumour involves that the console is based on FLASH memory.
    Article keeps feeding us with some more details and some info that was posted on June as well = the 16Gb PS3-4000 will have a flip-lid disc input and low-capacity storage.

    I can only think in a mediocre product being delivered, but it’s what i think about this. I don’t see anything innovative about this, maybe in terms of security can be the final showdown against the dongles. And above all for a *cheap* price ;)

    PS3-4000 skips gamescom, 16Gb Flash SKU goes cheap

    A VG247 source has claimed that Sony will not announce PS3-4000 at its gamescom press conference on August 14.

    PS3-4000, the latest, slimmest version of Sony’s current console, will not be announced at the main Sony gamescom press conference on August 14, VG247 has been told.

    A gamescom reveal had been planned, but stock levels of the current build are said to be too high for Sony to move onto what is probably the last take on PS3 before PlayStation 4 is announced next year.

    In addition, a source today said that the rumoured 16Gb version of PS3-4000 is in fact real, and is based on Flash memory. There was some confusion surrounding the figure, which originated from Anatel, the Brazilian Agency of Telecommunications, with many assuming it was intended to read 160Gb.

    The new model will stack up against Microsoft’s 4Gb Flash-based Xbox 360. As the 16Gb PS3-4000 will have a flip-lid disc input and low-capacity storage, we’ve been told today that the announcement “may” be accompanied by a huge price cut, with the entry version potentially dropping as low as £99.

    We’ve since been told, however, that there are no plans for a £99 PS3.

    In addition to the 16Gb version, 250GB and 500GB options have been rumoured.

    More garbage updates from True Blue today coming off their site. They are promising a new update soon bringing you absolutely nothing but more measures to protect themselves from clones…which honestly are probably as good as the original product itself.

    To quote:

    The True Blue team will soon be launching an updated version of our dongle, hence our silence and lack of news/updates. The changes include a new style casing to help differentiate clones from the authentic True Blue dongles. The new version dongle will be compatible with EBOOT patches released to date, whilst existing authentic True Blue dongles in the market will continue to be supported in the same firmware releases. You can expect a spate of EBOOT releases shortly after the new version dongle is released. We also plan to include a lot of extra features for our loyal True Blue user base in upcoming firmware releases. which will also function seamlessly on existing authentic True Blue dongles.

    We would also like to bring to our potential customers and existing users attention that the website: truebluejb2.cc is selling FAKE dongles. We are in no way associated with them nor will we replace or support their fake dongles.

    Information received suggests that they have not yet cloned our new style packaging, so large qty’s of devices in the market which do NOT come packed in the packaging detailed below (30-5-2012 news) are most likely fake. We will continue to monitor the situation daily.

    The upcoming new firmware releases will also block the clones and help users differentiate fakes from authentic dongles.

    Upcoming firmware releases will block these fake devices and furthermore EBOOT’s will not support the clones. PB2 and JBking clone devices will also be blocked in the future and will not function correctly with our upcoming features!

    We thank our customers for their continuing support and hope you will enjoy the coming features and EBOOT patches………

    The clones sold by truebluejb2.cc can be differentiated by checking the PCB inside the casing using the guide below, as previously posted in news.
