   This firmware is not compatible with consoles running official firmware above 3.55. This firmware will allow homebrew-enabled users to choose between Linux or GameOS when booting their systems.

This is exactly the same principle as some patches / cracks that we gave you before. 2: The Team E3 will publicly disclose the key 3.60 +, which will allow users to patch their own games and (incidentally) to create a custom firmware 3.60 +. Note that all this will be free and does not require ANY payment. The E3 Team is putting in place a new system to publish all these "new gifts".     Why didn't they just say that instead of being incredibly vague and confusing with the initial English press release. Maybe they had their reason's, and I still have questions about this, but they haven't ever given me a reason not to trust them.

    The PlayStation 3 coldboot is the boot sequence from the time the console is turned on 'till the time you're comfortably sitting at the XMB. This firmware, instead of taking you directly to the XMB, you have the option of booting directly into Linux.
    
    I'm sure it will work on 3.55 machines.

    cold boot is turning the console ON (from an OFF or "cold" state) by pressing the power button, also known as a hard (hardware) boot. As opposed to a warm or soft (software) boot, which is using the consoles "restart" function shutdown and restart the console.

    Ive wanted to install Linux for awhile now but for some reason i cant download off the gitbrew page. It jus loads a screen with text or it downloads as a .txt file. Any ideas anyone? Btw great work past and present. Any mirrors to this cfw.

    I read on another site that in order for glevand to pull this off, he needed to break the chain of trust. if this is true, this could lead to amazing things =) (not that this already isn't amazing)

    The chain of trust was broken on fw 3.55 last year lol. It changed after 3.56+ and thats when they added lv0

    No you still have to install linux.If his cfw pup was say 680mb then yes,but linux is not included with this

    He corrected his theory. It seems to start the GameOS process, but checks and changes to GuestOS.
    
    

    UPDATE: The theory is not quite right. It is true that initial GuestOS loader loads GameOS at cold boot first. It creates LPAR2, loads LV2 image into memory of LPAR2 but LPAR2 ist not executed immeditely. After loading GameOS, the initial Guest OS loader waits until FLASH is ready and then checks the boot GuestOS id, and if it's NOT equal to the id of GameOS then LPAR2 is detructed. When process 9 receives the LPAR2 shutdown signal, then it loads the boot GuestOS and executes it.

    do want linux to back up my Bluerays but still want to play may game backups so guess it does matter because it a cfw doesnt mean that its autmatically going to play backups unless its been enabled

    Hmm the chain of trust iirc was only considered broken because the other loaders where all compromised. Also Lv0 is present in all Firmwares, maybe you are referring to lv0.2 which is only present in some slim models iirc.

    Lv0 Has been there all along, it was just never really important/used until after 3.55.

    About that PS3gen site... It looks an awful lot like the PSPgen site, which was a legit PSP hacking site that released some PSP CFW's like 5.50 GEN

    Ialso had this problem but i found a tutorial on another site which helped me a great deal.

    great news . Jfw can do similar aswell but who would want to support Jfw. I'm sure people realise they stopped helping the community when they realised they can make money selling TB dongles instead of finishing their free cfw. I have found this site http://internet-map.net/ quite helpful at times, its good for figuring out who is in bed with who so to speak.

    Installed worked like a charm. Based on KM 3.55 for sure. All my homebrew is working! Next step is to install a distro. I'd love a tutorial or pointed in the right direction, as im unsure how this CFW differs from the ps3linux wiki. Thanks! I'm uploading video for all to see.

    That's been my theory since tb was very first released. I've thought so ever since Demonhades was the first person I could recall who said you didn't need the keys to play newer games. Then about a month later tb was released. I've since been scolded for that assumption. Who knows. We'll see.

    I agree completely. And you shouldn't have been scolded because several members have the same feeling. Evidence is out there IRC for example.

    I'd like to preface this by saying that I'm not new to the ps3 from either the hardware of software side of things. I've taken apart and repaired several ps3's and been through pretty much every mfw out there and installed linux via petitboot. I installed gleveland's firmware from 3.55 OFW through XMB (which was probably a mistake). My PS3 is now stuck in a rather unique state. I have no video, from either AV Multi out or HDMI. If I boot into recovery mode, the symptoms persist. I've tried to recover using an atmel based PS3Key with no success (it doesn't turn red and reboot, even with the correct HEX flashed onto it). I think If I knew what buttons to press to boot into gameos from the initial coldboot I could get my video working again. Any help with this would be appreciated. I still have HDD activity although after rebooting a few times, I no longer can connect my PS3 controllers to the system, they just blink.
    
    UPDATE:
    Apparently my PS3 was just on the rag and being moody. After 3 hours of freaking out, it decided to output video again. It wasn't the TV, since I was swapping video to my PC input and checking a download. Not sure what the problem was but it's resolved now. Flashing 3.55 OFW again and then flashing this firmware from recovery.

    Very noob question (apologies) ran through this install with instructions from Install Other++ os on PS3 slim 3.55 - YouTube only one video from 2 however... are there any instructions for loading linux (yellowdog 6.1) from the petitboot screen anywhere?. From the aforementioned video you get to the stage where this loads petitboot and gets you to the splash screen but the HDD is not partitioned so I can not mount the Yellowdog .iso to the relevant half of the HDD. I also tried to get the instructions from the gitbrew URL but this has been down all weekend Any advice here would be great!! For info, mines a slim on Kmeaw 3.55 (fresh build)

    I have to agree. I want to run Linux on this but am having problems finding a proper tutorial on how to install this. I am running 3.55 Kmeaw on an 80 gig fat without ps2 emulation if that makes a difference. (which honestly, hope it doesn't)

    I'm trying to install this CFW and my PS3 won't recognize the update. I've installed Geohotz, Waninkoko's, Kmeaw's, and Rebug's so I'm not a noob at this. I've checked the path again and again and have everything in the right folder. I'm on Rebug 3.55.2. Is there possibly any settings in Rebug that are keeping me from updating to a different CFW?
