An anonymous source sent me a method to running 3.6+ backups on a Dex machine
You will need these files.
- ps3gen.zip
- psn_package_npdrm.rar
- PS3 Game Updater 1.41.rar
- PkgView_1.3.rar
Preparing the usb hdd: 0. Connect an external usb disc 1. Go to debug settings on your dex 2. BD Access select "BD Emulator (USB)" 3. transfer rate option select "HDD Native" 4. "Format BD Emulator HDD" Preparing the update: 1. First use PS3 Game Updater to get the newest Update pkg for the game 2. Then fire up Pkg View and extract the BCUS98295 dir into any dir -lets just call it targetdir. 3. Extract psn_package_npdrm.exe into this dir 4. Create a .txt into this dir and fill it with: Content-ID = EP0001-BCUS98295_00-0000111122223333 K_licensee = 0x00000000000000000000000000000000 DRM_Type = Free Content_Type = GameData PackageType = DiscGamePatch PackageVersion = 01.21 Rename the .txt file "package.conf". Where BCUS98295 is the Title ID of your game and Packageversion has to be the Number of the Patch you downloaded 5. run it via cmd with psn_package_npdrm.exe package.conf BCUS98295 -> this will create a new update pkg for your game -> put on usb stick an install on DEX 3.55 ( don't know if you can also install it later ) Preparing the BD Emu Disc: 0. connect external usb with your pc 1. Fire up psgen.exe 2. fill in the title id: bcus.. put disc version to 00.00, copyright holder = sce, producer name = sce, tick trophy, click setup game 3. file -> import -> load up the param.sfo, click tab content information files and drag and drop the files from ps_game without the directories -> ; remove files that get a grey background -> click ok 4. click tab directory and file the structure with your backed up files 5. click build 6. click for bd emulator hdd tab and select the partition u want to use
The anon source told me that MLS 2012 works with this method….
Note that files with .edat update does not work with this method yet.

I updated my ps3 a while ago but I hope this works just to kill True Blue. Run most 3.6+ backups and don't need to rely on pos hackers putting out patches for stuff they don't own.

Considering the method, it seems that only games that have had a game patch released, can be played on 3.55 DEX, maybe it should be mentioned? - Unless I am wrong.

I have one question. Can we be able to use all of debug options? I mean all of them would work? I think I will need HDCP to turn off. Do You think that this can solve problems with handshake connecting via HDMI? And this can solve problems of people who have monitors that don't have hdcp?

I see this method supposedly runs backups is pretty much equal to what has been explained by developers, but since I do not have a DEX some questions linger.
Has anyone gotten this to work?
It mentions to use DEX 3.55. Has anyone tried > 3.55 DEX to see if > 3.55 backups work (in theory they shouldn't, but I cross my fingers).
It also mentions game partitions on the USB HDD. Is there a limit to the number of partitions the PS3 creates?

I have heard multiple times, but have not tried it myself that it creates (up to?) 4 partitions, so a max of 4 games can be on the proprietary formatted HDD for BD-emulation.
Why shouldn't it work? Its a .pkg created from Sony's tools, and its a DEX firmware which allows the installation of those said pkg's. Only limitation I see, is that a patch has to have been released.
Unless Sony has taken specific safeguards against this, I cannot see why it should not work on 3.56+ games. And since this has recently become public, I find the changes scarce that they have.
Of course, afaik, they did change alot in the firmware after 3.56, so it might be that it won't, but the changes are good.

FWIW, if anyone wants to test whether their game has had a patch released, Title IDs are listed on the PS3 Compability List. It will be needed in most cases, to see if their is a patch on the update servers.

as i said before, partitoning any HDD with data on it will corrupt this data because of the new partition. had to make this experience on my own with my ext. hdd with many backups on it
only possible method would be to copy your data somewhere else, partition the HDD and put the data back on it

Anyway.... I checked Sony's game update servers, for which games that are in my interest that have had patches released... If any of you, have the same game taste as me this might be relevant to you (the same game taste is mainly platformers... I miss the banjo kazooie days.. Should buy a wii for zelda and mario, and 360 for banjo kazooie,tooie,threeie..), so you know if you should hurry out ASAP and buy the game, since you can play it now. Or, if you should feel down a little more, for now at least.

Keep in mind that if you have no unallocated space, you can also always (although its alot harder/unadvised to do with the boot partition), shrink an existing partition(if it has any free space, else you ofc cant shrink it), so you can make a new partition out of the now unallocated space.
The only rule here is that if you shrink two partitions, you cannot (without making some changes on the hdd) make one big partition out of that, as the unallocated space needs to be sequential.
Its easier to illustrate.
We disregard the facts that harddisks is actually made up of platters, which are segmented into tracks and cylinders. We just say that a harddisk is one big sequential line that can store data.
Data from partition 1 is illustrated as a:

unallocated space is a:
If your hdd looks like this:

Then no, you cannot add any further partitions, as there is no free space.
However, if only half the partition is full, you can shrink it:

and then make another partition from that free space:

Only thing you cannot do, is if your harddisk looked like this(for instance after you have shrinked two partitions):

Then make the unallocated space(the question marks (>,<)), into one partition, as the partions needs to be sequential logically on the harddisk. You could move the second partition up next to the first with some trouble, or you could delete the second partition (that wouldn't affect the first) and then make 1,2 or 3 partitions out of the now free space.

A)I go to the living room where my ps3 is and plug in my external HDD.
Now if I do step 4 from the Tutorial, I dont think the Ps3 will ask me which partition I would like to get formated , or does it?
If not then its risky that I could all my saved data on the ext HDD

You cant have 2 partitions, and then one of the partitions would be subpartiotioned into 4 subpartitions. Or well that is not how the ps3gen tool works, and it can't be easily altered, since the DEX firmware has some expectations as to what the harddisk would look like after the ps3gen tool.
It would not expect that it would have to look at all of the harddisk's different partitions first bytes, to find the partition description tables for any(or perhaps a fixed 4) partition(s) within a single partition.
What I hope is that it does not care about the amount of partitions at all. I hope what it does is that it just looks at the bootsector (the first bytes of the harddisk) where the partition descriptor tables are, and then look at each of the different partitions on the harddisk, whether they contain a data structure (likely created with ps3gen) suitable for the BD emulation. If that is the case, then if the limit of the 4 partitions created by ps3gen could be altered, we could have more games on the ext. HDD. However... It is a bit odd that they have made that limit of 4 partitions.
So, in short, ps3gen does not work on the individual partitions. It works on the harddisk and partitions the harddisk itself (thus overriding the old partition table that described your previous partitions, with its new table that describes the 4 partitions that the BD emulator can use). , it does not partition a partition on the harddisk.
(Or well.. It doesn't override the partitions itself, it overrides the partition descriptor tables on the start of the harddisk that refers to the hardisk with its own PDTs, so when the harddisk is accessed by the OS, it sees no reference to the old partitions only the new partitions created by it.. So, the data from the old partitions is still there, until they are overwritten by whatever data/games that fills the partitions

I decided to simplify the original guide (which you can find it here) as new tools have emerged.
Requirements:

2) A USB keyboard and mouse;
3) Red Ribbon Linux on your PS3, you should download and burn this ISO : http://garr.dl.sourceforge.net/proje...ribbon_rc5.rar
4) CEX2DEX, downloadable from here : http://puu.sh/IY92
5) metldrpwn, downloadable from here : http://ps3devwiki.com/files/devtools/dump-...r/metldrpwn.zip
6) (Optional) although unlikely, is possible brick, so I recommend you have E3 flasher.
Installing Linux:

Put everything in the root of a USB device and install the PKG.
Each application you start before returning to the XMB will make 3 beeps the console, if you do not hear these 3 beeps try again.
1. Run "Setup for OtherOS FLASH", turn the console back to the XMB and restart.
2. Start the "Install OtherOS" (the key with the file dtbImage.ps3.bin must be inserted).
Now connect a USB keyboard and a USB to the console and launched from the XMB "OtherOS Boot" and "Reboot". You'll find yourself in "Petitboot".
Using the keyboard, select "Exit to shell" and press enter.
Type the following commands:
Now insert the stick into your PC and extract the folder "metldrpwn" from the "metldrpwn.zip" in the root of the USB stick.
CEX2DEX Start, select your dump and click "Extract metldr", save the file as "metldr" folder "metldrpwn" on your USB stick.
Go back to your PS3, plug in the USB key and the CD with the iso burned previously. From the XMB start again "OtherOS Boot" and "Reboot".
This time from Petitboot selected "Red Ribbon OTHEROS live" and wait for the upload.
If you do not have a USB hub you unplug the keyboard and mouse to attack, click the first icon in the upper left -> Accessories -> Terminal. Reconnect the keyboard.
Type the following commands in Terminal:
Will appear written, if all goes well you should read it somewhere "problem status (0x00000089)".
Type the following commands:
The system will shut down.
Go back to your PC and start CEX2DEX, select new dump your flash and the file "dump" that will be on your USB stick, click CEX-> DEX, now you save a file, name it "flashDEX.bin" and save it in the root USB stick.
Return to the PS3, connect the USB stick and remove the CD.
Start again "OtherOS Boot" and "Reboot" on Petitboot select "Exit to shell"
Type the following commands:
and place it in X: \ PS3 \ UPDATE \ PS3UPDAT.PUP (X: is your USB stick) :
Turn on the console in recovery mode and select system update. Now you have a Debugging Station.

The DEX PS3 will erase your current USB HDD and put it's own partitions on it. There is currently no method to utilize the extra space left over. This means that you will need to have the USB HDD for only your DEX PS3 and nothing else. This is the way the DEX currently works.

Dex 3.55 requires Linux at the moment!.
DEX from a 4.11 OFW console needs to be downgraded via flasher to 3.55 then linux then 3.55DEX then 4.11 DEX, But the IF is whether the console can be downgraded to 3.55 via a flasher in the first place... it all depends on if you got the PS3 new with 3.55 OFW or lower then upgraded... but if you got the ps3 with 3.56 or higher then what ever firmware it came with is the lowest it can go.

Would it be possible for the DEX firmware to look at the internal HDD instead of a external USB? I know it formats the internal drive, but if we could somehow point it towards a partition the internal drive we could bypass the mandatory 4 partition on external HDD format and use the internal drive as it is used on 3.55 CFW.
Also, if multiman (or any other .pkg) could bypass the "install patch to run backups" requirement, I'm sure DEX conversion would become a VERY attractive proposition.

IF it partitions the target USB into 4 partitions, which I am pretty sure by now it does, AND as the italian guide linked a couple of times here(which I google translated... wish my luck google translate didnt trick me) states, the partitions needs to have their size chosen beforehand, which can be either: 4,7 GB or 8,3 GB or 25 GB or 50 GB, then you need one pretty big USB flash drive...

AND as has been mentioned in the thread/topic(which was why I started doubting if you have read it, again sorry if you have), it does not format a partition. It formats(partitions really) the whole harddisk so you cant have a designated partition on an existing harddisk, and tell it to operate on just that. And it only makes it harder that the partitioning/formatting the ps3gen tool does is to a proprietary format, so we know **** about doing it ourselves. ;/
It especially makes it harder, using the internal drive on the newer PS3s (the NOR ones) that stores some of the firmware on the HDD.
Idd, if the patch thing could be avoided, ALOT more could be played. Jak and Daxter HD Collection, Ratchet Clank HD Collection, Rayman, spyro, most platformers didnt have patches.
This is still an incredible nice advancement though! ...And the MGS HD Collection did have a patch, ye-hey!

Yea I read all of [MENTION=231976]lordv[/MENTION] 's other posts. I liked them. He was being very helpful with claryfying how this could be utilized for the end user, and he was (by _far_) the first I saw mentioning anything, about running backups via BD-Emu on DEX PS3's, and yea, as you say he was right about it all. Sadly I didn't see that post he might have made about making a fake patch for those games without one official, but on the other hand, it is more than most likely that I havent seen all of his posts, as that thread got far long after some time.
Btw, actually I also saw him making his own thread, describing the method in this thread days ago. It was in a more rough draft shape than this, but it was still possible to understand.
(perhaps this would be smart to add to the first page, so that people could find out themselves, if there was a patch out for the game they are thinking on?)
First,
You find out the title ID of your game(alot of title IDs are on the "ps3 compability list".. <-- google that without quotes), for instance BCES01503 (Ratchet and Clank HD collection) and BCES01010 (Twisted Metal)
Second,
you insert them in this string:
https://a0.ww.np.dl.playstation.net/tpl/np/<DucksAreGreat>/<DucksAreGreat>-ver.xml
Substituting <DucksAreGreat> with the titleid,
so R&C HD Collection ends up looking like this:

and Twisted metal ends up looking like this:
https://a0.ww.np.dl.playstation.net/...S01010-ver.xml
Third,
If there is a result(meaning a page with XML text shows), you are in luck a patch it out, if not you are not, yet.
Note: Of course remember, as the first post also mentions that updates consisting of an .edat file, cannot yet be utilized this way.
There are more links that can be used than just that one. Perhaps it would be wise, if you variate them, and use the other ones too. I don't know what could happen, but for the hell of it, safety first, as it can never hurt.

tested this on my real debug 4.10 ps3, not working.
I am using Starhawk. After repackaging the 1.01 and 1.02 update and installed, the game starts with a message to ask to insert the game disc to play.
I might have used the wrong version of psn_package_npdrm.exe

I ran into a video output error while trying to load a BLUS batman AC on a pal machine. To fix this load up the games .sfo in sfoeditor and check all the video output setting boxes ie: 1080/720 etc. Do this before loading the .sfo in ps3gen.
Thought I would mention this for the other noobs like myself.

Yes, if you would edit sources.list from /etc/apt/ and have a local repository of deb packages but really.. it's a lot simpler to just connect a cable on the back of your ps3
This way you can also use ssh (putty) to connect to your ps3 linux and do all the stuff from your PC ( and have the ability to copy paste commands from tutorials )

for the ps3 fat owners under us u have to type sdd1 instead of sda1 in the linux command and ps3vflasha instead of ps3nflasha and you get your dump, but you will get an invalid dump i tried this about 20 times. CEX to DEX will not find metldr in that dump.
so i tried memdump for gameOS and got the same dump (251.396.096 Bytes) from flasha and it worked fine with CEX to DEX, now i got my metldr file
till now i am stuck at sudo make cause it wont install properly with apt-get install make
I´ll try to figure that out as well

Try just logging in as root so you don't have to type sudo all the time to do that type in terminal:
su (and press enter)
you will be prompted for the root password, enter it and then continue.

Just tested showtime 3.9-test and even though it installs fine, the app itself is nowhere to be found (probably because it's suppose to install itself under Video and on Dex this might be different from programming point of view)
Does anyone know a showtime app that installs as a normal app, in Game folder?
UPDATE: showtime-3.6.5 release pkg installs and even shows under Video but fails to start with a 80010017 error. Should I try repackaging it? I guess not because it's already unsigned. It might run on DEX 3.55, has anyone tried it? I'm feeling kind of lazy downgrading.

It works perfectly fine on DEX 3.55 even without reinstalling (originally installed from DEX 4.11) so it's a matter of firmware compatibility

1) Many >3.56 games don't have updates, and you can't run it without update on DEX.
2) If game update have one or more *.edat files inside (FFXIII-2, or Disgaea 3/4 for example) you can't repack it correctly with this method. It repacks and installs fine, but freezing on loading.
3) You can play old <=3.56 backups via BD-Emu without game updates. Just unself EBOOT, fself it with sdk and replace in ps3gen during building.

FF XIII-2 (US version) works I personally tried it.
I did not create new package for the update.
Just unpack the update, rename folder to title id
put update in dev_hdd0/game
Go into recovery mode and select rebuild database.
When ps3 reboots you are done.
Edit: awesome update finder 0.03 is really easy to use.

If you mean changing which game load at one time you need to open ps3 gen and select one of the 4 partitions and put it to default. Then go back to ps3 insert the ext hdd and boot up the ps3.

I made the iso in PS3gen and burned on Blu Ray disc but on the PS3 it doesn't show up. Maybe is because I didn't change some settings in "Debug Settings" or something else.
However, on external HDD (USB Blu Ray emulator) the games are working great

Few questions, I'm trying to understand if switching between running old and new backups really is quick & easy.
How do I downgrade to MFM 3.55 DEX (to run old backups) from lets say 4.11 DEX ?
Is it just a matter of installation MFM 3.55 DEX PUP from XMB, simply as that?
Will my internal HD be reformatted in doing so or when switching from MFM 3.55 DEX back to 4.11 DEX for example?

bdemu works great, only i can't seem to write into "game" folder, either with ComgenieAwesomeFilemanager or blackboxftp, i haven't run the fix_permission on 355
it looks others can "write" just fine in "hdd0\game" folder 411 fine? is it with fix_permission fix on 355 first? thx

i have read on a german site that someone made some kind of hybrid dex 3.55 firmware, it enabled features like peek&poke for bdemu v2 and other advantages from kmeaw and packed them into a 3.55 dex firmware so its usable on dex console.
is it for somebody possible to do this also with the recently released 4.11 dex?
this would really be cool because this would give us the possibility to use mmCM on 4.11 dex

UMVC3 had another Trophy related error. "Invalid filename" but despite that error it still works perfectly.

On the Italian forum (shown in the 2nd/3rd post of this thread) there's a few other people with the same problems (Max Payne 3) I tried another backup image but it doesn't seem to work. Wondering if anyone really had it function.

Just use Multiman's mmOS for file management-related activities on 4.11 DEX.
Comgenie was never updated beyond this version and the source was never released either - pretty much a dead-end.

ok i think my problem was that i was using win 7 via wmware fusion. i tried on my xp laptop and it built it fine. but however it still said that the game required 3.72 or something, so im thinking that maybee i didnot build the new pkg update correctly. or maybee its just the game. mw3

I get these errors with ps3 gen Version 3.12 & 3.10 - [Error] LICDIR: Invalid dirname.
[Error] TROPDIR: Invalid dirname.
[Error] Directory (NPCommID): Not found in /PS3_GAME/TROPDIR. game is White Kight Chroncles 2 ps3gen can build it anyways and the game boots shows some sluff and then it says can't find torpdirs and says press PS to exit game. I try rebuilding the game without trodirs but its the same so how can I fix these errs with ps3gen?

right here we go....fixed the problem....if your hard drive is not showing up in windows 7 follow these steps.
1. run ps3gen as normal (drag drop files etc..) .do not build
2. goto file and save project...then exit program
3. run ps3gen as admin ...load saved project
4. goto build and hard drive is there.
hope this helps someone...cos it was driving me crazy

I have a question, wich is a little bit off topic.
So, can we change files of a game, once we have put it on the hdd? I'm talking about 3.6+ games. I'm asking, because I make translations (language) for games and I do need to be able to replace the modified files to test them. Right now I'm still on CEX and I use MM file manager for this. As far as I'm aware, keys are not needed for homebrew on a DEX.
Unsigned stuff will work on DEX so when creating homebrew, don't sign it with any keys.

If what you are thinking is dumping the loaded eboots from memory and resigning them, then sadly we cannot as, although we can still run homebrew on 3.55DEX+, we cannot peek in the memory and dump the decrypted eboots from them

Its OK think I have sorted that. The folder BLUS30838 was inside a folder created PKG view.
Ive had enough, now I'm having problems with PS3gen.

I have check the boxes 720 and 1080 because I was getting video format not supported error when trying to load.
Now I am getting eroor 80028F11 game not supported message.

I see some of you having problems with psn_package_npdrm.exe and the thing is you don't need to use it. You need to extract the retail package to your pc then rename it as BLUSXXXX (XXX = game id) then move it to devhdd0/game with multiman. You then turn off your ps3 and run recovery mode and rebuild the database. Install DEX FW 4.11 and enjoy your game from usb. I can also confirm on NOR consoles if you want to use original 4.11 games you just need to change usb emu to BD drive and hdd native back to same as speed as BD. It works without a drive fix.

OK i'm nearly there, I can get the games to show in xmb but when I start them I get the message you must insert disc to play.
Can I ask when using PS3Gen do you get errors because I always get told that the Trophy directory is missing and that there is also no eboot.

I did nothing till now, (reading, trying not to do stupid moves), decided to wait for a "totally stupid retard tutorial for dummies", all i would like to know is:
1 - What is the Lastest CFW that works with this (cex->dex) ?
2 - Does that means i can play all games (some people would call it backups) on my cfw machine ?
3 - "managers" (like multiman, rogero, open...), works with that ?

Hi. I have tried my backup copy of Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3 using this method. And I was seem to be successful, but the game asks me to update to 3.6.......
But then, I am using a modified DEX 3.55 which has peek and poke.
Does this mean I need to change to at least a 3.6 DEX before I can play this game?

I jumped firmwares (hehe) to DEX 4.11 since I already got it from Captain's CEX to DEX tutorial.
I can confirm that this method works. I used an 8GB MicroSD with with a card reader and used Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3 and installed the PKG update extracted with PKGView and compiled back again with PSN Package.
Interestingly, the PS3gen application changes the param.sfo to require at least a 3.6 firmware. Does changing the param.sfo (Impossible due to the unique BDEmu filesystem?) will affect backups running in DEX's lower than 3.6? Sorry for the noob question that requires an obvious answer, but just wanting to be 100% sure.

You MUST follow the update numerical order or else it won't work.
When you have finished copying all the files then you use psn_package_npdrm.exe to create the new package ready to install.

I had the same issues with tropdir and the warning. I've just NOT used the trophies (deselect the option in main window ps3gen) and ignored the other warning.
I've ripped this BD: BLES00942 with multiMan on 3.55 a long time ago.

Ok just an update, if I delete the PKG from game data then the game loads to a black screen with a error, so it looks like the PKG is wrong but how can it be wrong when I have followed the guide to the letter.

Yesterday I installed Ghost Recon - in the partition 0 -, and played with it a little. Today I wanted to try Max Payne 3, and installed it in partition 1.
After that, only Max Payne appears in XMB. Do I have to change any settings to swap partitions? Or did I do something wrong?

Also i think i may have done the building incorrectly. PS3_gen doesn't let me make any directories in root of the ps3_game folder of my backup. For instants resistance 3's PKGDIR folder and contents. So it won't let me copy them.
The tutorial doesn't explain correctly what i need to copy?
EDIT: Okay got it, for some reason i plugged it in to the rightest usb slot and it showed. strange.

If I understood you correctly, you don't need to copy the directory (PS3GEN won't allow you to do it) . Try going inside the PS3_GAME folder, then drag the contents of it also inside the PS3_GAME of PS3GEN.

ok ive got 3.55 backups running on dex 4.11 by making them into psn game . ive only tryed one game and it boots up fine untill it gets to trophy data and quites because of a trophy error 80022d74 . if i get more games working i will post here , maybe we wont have to keep on downgrading to 3.55 to play them back ups

did you manage to unsign them?
I was also trying Deank´s disc boot program to boot backed up games off of disc but with no luck. that´´s not really needed because you should be able to play games from disc if it´s burned right. I just don´t know how. ps3gen has option for DVd and BD.
If anyone knows how to play backups off of disc on DEX, I would apreciate any info.
It´s great to see people trying different things. Reminds me of when the ps3 first got jailbroken.
Tested my 1st 3.6+ game today.

What I mean is, create a package to be installed that simply points to the games files.
We used to do this on 3.41 before we got kmeaw. That way you won't be taking up all your internal space for games.
"lastgame" for MM or "XMBoot" will do that for you but you may have to fake-sign them for dex.

Just wanted to post back that I have now sorted out all my problems and have Battlefield 3 now working 100% with 4.20.
Only downside to which I am surprised is I had to go to another forum to get the help that I needed because apart from Harry who helped other help from other members wasn't forth coming.

I did everything right but was just missing some files in ps3gen.
I took all the files from the original PS3/USER/DIR and drag them across to ps3gen.
I also left disc version at 01.00 and sce was put in caps like SCE.
Any way doing the above worked.
What I can say is that lightyear has posted two videos on you tube that if you follow then you wont go wrong.

My dragon's dogma doesn't seem to want to work. I've installed the 1.02 update, but every time I click the game on XMB, it just goes to a black screen and stays there. I didn't get any error while doing any of the steps. I even tried jumping to 3.55 with peek and poke to install the update then go back to 4.20, but I would still get the black screen.
Any ideas?
One more quick question, when installing an update using this method, will the install screen be similiar to installing any package or should it go to one of those patch screen that tell you what version is being installed? Whenever I install the update, it looks like its installing a regular patch. In the game data utility there is a file for dragon's dogma and it says "version: 1.02"

Man, I wish I wasnt such a big pussy. I am confident I could easily follow all the instructions and do the conversion plus be able to format my drive and install new games, but Im still scared to risk my playstation after reading the few responses of other users who have bricked.

Well, the problem is just there's a lot of ways to forget some stuff, and most of the bricks are actually because of trying to go back into CEX from DEX. And the "PS3 Factory mode" application.
According to the posts I saw about bricking, the most common reason for bricks is "FACTORY_SERVICE_MODE_TOOL_v02" and ""JAICRAB_PRELOADER_ADVANCE_v31" and it's associated files "Lv2diag_exit.self" and "lv2diag.self" .
The Factory Service Mode Tool generates "Lv2diag_exit.self" . Because you need that file to go out of Factory Service mode. But it seems that the "Lv2diag_exit.self" made thru CEX cannot be used on DEX and vice versa. This is culprit I guess. And the best solution is for the maker of that application to be able to verify is that "lv2diag.self" is compatible with the PS3 that will use it. As it just blindly uses any "lv2diag.self" file it finds. But I think this will be hard to do.....
Or change how ""FACTORY_SERVICE_MODE_TOOL_v02" works so that a brick will not happen, like changing how it modifies stuff inside the PS3.
The Linux some has some sort of safeguards, if you can't install it, you're doing something seriously wrong.
While if you botch up the Backuprflash.bin dumping, the resulting root key is all zero, which makes it fail on the CEX2DEX app.
But the reverse might not be true. If your Backupflash.bin dump is correct, but you forgot extract the metldr or put it in the "metldrpwn" directory. The best solution for this is to look at the programs loaded by the script if it produces an error.

I have 2 consoles cechco4's(one has cfw and other ofw.I would like to convert the one to dex.The real question is that could i ever convert to dex as the cfw console has a broken lasers.
Could someone link me to a great guide to installing linux via usb and not via cd on to the ps3.I read alot of guides for installing other os,but all of them require iso to be burned to disk.
Is there someone on the forum who converted to dex using a ps3 without a laser.Will there not be complications arising from firmware checks.peek and poke..etc when the bd drive is not working.

First, did you set the HDD Emulator as USB on the Debug Settings on your DEX'd PS3? And in my experience, I also used an 8GB SD Card. But it only created a single partition. Still works though.

I formatted to ntfs first then ran as admin and ps3gen seen my usb..
Ive managed to build the file and copy it to my usb to layer1 as it would not allow me to copy to layer 0.
My playstation wont detect the game though.. nothing happens when I insert the usb.. Nothing will run from /app_home/ps3_game..
In my debug settings bd emu is set to usb.. speed is hdd native.. the disc from my game section on the xmb is missing and the update pkg seems to be installed ok..
when building with ps3gen I done the title etc... sfo... copied everything from my usrdir apart from the ones in licdir that it wont let me copy.. When I go to buld it says sfo is smaller than expected or something like that but everything else seems to go fine.. I tried this with both battlefield 3 and skyrim but neither worked..
Any help would be great

I keep my discs away from scratches. Most of my own games are backed up on the hdd and i am at peace knowing that i dont have to bother with purchasing em again in case they crack or go unusuable.
One man's back up might be other's piracy.. but then its the interpretation.
Simply sticking to what might be possible is being very rigid.

My question that I'm on DEX and I connected my external HDD go to DEBUG settings ... Format BD emulator HDD ... and after this when I plugged in my PC it did'nt detected. What could be the problem?

A CEX2DEX video is extremely hard to make i'm thinking about doing one though would have to split it up into a few parts and the video would probably be like 1-2hrs long.. if someone gives me some info on changing my nor dex back to cex i might just do it
edit: i also don't have a hardware flasher so don't want to be flashing my ps3 a lot.. that is why i'm really hesitant on flashing back to cex to make a video tut and flash back to dex.. The first time i flashed to dex scared me enough haha

1. As you know there are various types of updates. Some are cumulative and some require previous updates to be installed. If the game has more than 1 updates. Should I use only patch the last latest update, or patch every single update?

Hmmm, don't know if the idea was given days before but....
What's the problem of a "Fake Update" for every game?
So if there is no update for a game you could create a fake_update_01_01.pkg which alters a common file of the game and after that install fake_update_01_02.pkg to undo the change but it's now playable on a DEX console.
I don't think it's that simple but I thought I share my ideas with the scene^^
Offtopic: Is there any way of getting Guitar Hero DLC Songs working on Backup? We can clone sheeps and can shoot cows on the moon but there's no known way to get DLC Songs working?

I have a question about Gran Turismo Spec 2.0. Well it has many updates and I was wondering do I have to install them 1 by 1 ? Because as far as I know the latest updates does not have the contents of the previous.
I have Spec 2.0 (which obviously is 2.0), but there are 7 more updates (right until 2.07) and they are different sizes. For example 2.07 is 2.14MB, but 2.06 is 474.61MB. Any ideas how to make things easier, than extract/compile all of them 1 by 1?
Edit: Actually, I have something in mind - install [MENTION=185665]itskamel[/MENTION]'s 3.55 DEX, then install all of the updates 1 by 1, and then just extract/compile the last (2.07). I have to try that.

Hi, I got a 160gb USB HDD with 4 partitions on it. I put the first game, Sonic Generations, and played successfuly with DEX. Then, I put GoW3 on the second partition. Now XMB only shows GoW, and I can't seem to find a way to select the game on the first partition.
So my question is: Is there any way to cycle between the games installed on different partitions on the same HDD?

Did you do it in this manner? Example if the game as 5 updates, did you aways merge the pervious update to the 1st update.
In this way, the latest files are always the latest file.

Than finally perform the "psn_package_npdrm.exe" patch to the final merged folder?

On a side-note. If you remember Uncharted 3 requires heavy patching in order to work on 3.55 CEX. I wonder now if Uncharted 3 could simply work in DEX via a simple patched update.

Hm, I remember, yes. Haven't tried Uncharted 3 now on DEX, but I guess it will work just with update, like other games. So far I've tested :

get ps3 gen v3.30 and there is a file called genelib.dll
. open it up in a hex editor and search for the offset 5D979 and change the 04 to 50 .
they said that it will make 80 images when u format the hdd with ps3gen
. i had tried it but i only get 14 images , maybe its cos of the size of my hdd

The new mM update is supposed to do that but it kept locking up on my 4.20 so I just selected the games in the PC based app instead. Very easy to use and games are pretty quick as well.
Still not a perfect solution but it's getting there.

Think of it as a multiman for the pc. It shows a list of your games on your PC, select one, click "mount" and it mounts it to app_home via TM.
If you have the new mM installed, you can choose the game via mM instead.
Works quite well, had a couple of lock ups with mM so I uninstalled it and use the PC app instead.

no, ps3gen is NOT needed. The PC app essentially mounts the selected game to the ps3's app_home folder.
What I have done, is moved my backups to one folder which I point the PC app to. This then mounts the selected game to "app_home" via TM.
Go to the PS3 and start the game from app_home.

Pretty cool, I was already playing some games over LAN with Target Manager but this is so much easier. I was doing it to learn a little about my DEX but it´s great that more came out of it than I and others expected.
Also this is a much better solution than updating for new games and downgrade for the older games.

As Dean said at crunch.. the main point of this is you can load your old 3.55 backups easily on 4.20. It modifies the EBOOT on the fly and even converts them back to normal for 3.55 use.
You can play your old games.. new 'backups' that have updates + 4.20 retail disks.
Newest showtime, RetroArch and most the important mM functions work.
DEX 4.20 isn't as much of a hassle to be on.

Pardon the redundance GraVoX959, but does this actually allows games that don't have a 3.55 fix yet to be playable on 4.20 through simple LAN and TM with the tools provided? Just install the debug pkg with the update and run the game through this method? Seriously? WoW! Didn't see that one coming, not this fast. So basically this is a bypass on the need for keys, an alternate peek n' poke... alright Sony, we can't acess and handle files as we please on 3.56+ fws but as it turns out we won't be needing it anymore! Sorry to kill your excitement, but in the readme says "no psn/pkg fixes". In other this does not remove the need of debug updates and you can only play games that have fixes for CFW 3.55

From my understanding it loads all the 3.55 (+ recently released cracked TB games) backups. I'm pretty sure it may run the games that you had to partition the external HDD for over the network.
That's the one bit I'm not sure about.
I know it runs some of the troublesome games like Assassins Creed no problems.
But yeah either ask Dean or one of the guys at crunch or I'll find out for sure later and let you know

So there's a chance then... please do so, check back with the devs when you have the time and share the info with the rest of us. If the bdemu+externalhdd can be replaced by this method then it's a huge break indeed and with a simple tweeks and a wired network we could have a definitive method to load any game playable on DEX thus far, leaving unplayable only the ones that don't have updates. Would be great, fingers crossed! Cheers.

When you use BDemu to play games the ps3 sees it mounted at dev_bdvd just like a real disc and the update is programed to look for the game disc at dev_bdvd so that is why you can play these games.
When you use this new pc method your game is on your pc and the program decrypts the eboot/sprx and fake signs them so the game can be mounted at app_home.
We don't have the keys for 3.60+ so these games cannot be fake signed. I believe they can still be mounted but unplayable and you cant use the games update to trick it into playing because the update cannot see the app_home mount point it can only see dev_bdvd.
That is why this only works for 3.55 games because the program needs to decrypt the eboot/sprx. All 3.60+ games without a 3.55 patch will need to continue using the BDemu + retail update method.

Got target manager to work finally tried 3.55 fixed game and it works using new mmdm and new dex multiman...iam on 4.11 dex...now i dont have to downgrade to 3.55 to play games that dont have updates...sweeet..
)...for target manager to connect to ps3 check whther these options are right
Settings > Debug Settings > Release Check Mode = Development Mode.
Settings > Debug Settings > Wake on LAN is On.
Settings > Debug Settings > system software mode....

click the second option "LOW LEVEL FORMAT" box
and "select" perform quik wipe(just remove partitions and MBR)
click "Format this drive"
takes only a sec...
windows ask/popsup a "format this drive" before u can use it
click cancel
ready for use now

When i start multiman and refresh list o BdEmu games, none appears.
Don't know if i am missing any setting, or if any problem with the LAN (just plugged the ethernet cable to the router with pc on).

As it states, I installed the .pkg file under RogeroDEX 3.55 then upgraded to DEX 4.20 and it worked beautifully.

I am running DEX 4.21 and have Multiman DEX installed on it. I read in multiman that there is a way to swtich my game that's on my ps3 without going to my pc and opening PS3GEN. Also I read that I can have up to 10 games instead of 4 how do I do that ?
