Don’t say?!? ;) Sony keeps playing with end user but this maybe this could be something possitive to some of them. (Sony can’t stand Nintendo’s Wii-U..that’s crystal clear).

To quote:

Thanks to a PS Vita firmware update recently released by Sony, users can now turn the handheld device into a controller for their PS3, as well as use it to play a number of PSOne Classics games.

Firmware version 1.80 allows for the Wii U-esque utility, as well as a number of other features, including, at long last, the option for d-pad menu navigation. Now, PS Vita owners can enable the d-pad in settings for use in the handheld’s menus, which was heretofore touch screen-only. The device’s maps and web browser have been enhanced as well, with the additions of a jump-to-top button, the ability to use the rear touchpad to scroll, and a new search bar in the top-left corner.

But what might be the real selling point (well, maybe for some of us) is the access this update gives us to a number of PSOne games now available for download. Such titles include Tomb Raider, Wild Arms, Twisted Metal, Arc the Lad, Final Fantasy VII, Jet Moto, Syphon Filter, Cool Boarders 2 and Hot Shots Golf 2.

Joystiq notes that two games, Cho Aniki and Money Idol Exchanger, PSOne imports published by MonkeyPaw, are downloadable (with Cho Aniki so far confirmed as playable) to the Vita. Neither, they report, is on either an official Sony or MonkeyPaw list of supported games. (FYI: if you’re the type that loves weirdness, you’re going to want to get your hands on Cho Aniki.)

On the other hand, Joystiq also reports that Um Jammer Lammy, another unlisted game, is not available for the Vita, demonstrating that while not all PSOne games are accessible on the handheld, some are but simply haven’t been listed.

Its a great gimmick, but that is all it is.

Maybe I press too hard, but my analog sticks have grooves worn in them from hrs and hrs of BF3. I would destroy a Vita within minutes.

It's just another lame excuse to justify the Update.
I will not use (if i have one some day) as a PS controller, nah not even in my dreams. It's a very delicate product to use like a controller.

This *strategy* or gimmick is the same that Sega done with Dreamcast, Nintendo with Gamecube and GBA (and so on).
Using a portable as controller, i can accept this back on those days when console were built to last...but today?!!? nah.

Pretty much makes the WII U obsolete before it even launched.............LOL. As long as Sony supports this feature with up and coming games this will be awesome. No crappy restrictions like not been able to play out side of your home(WII U). Could see this catching on once Vita sheds a little from the £200 asking price. Vita would make a nice media controller aka Logitech Harmony(which can also be pricey).

If I am honest the vita seems a bit too overpriced and with sony locking down on homebrew they are not going to get any sales psp sold well because we could use homebrew (epic emulators on the go) but sony has turned money hungry and all there innovation is gone. I think most people would go out and buy the vita if it was hacked leading in more sales. know no games even sell as they aren't worth £50.

@5
you smoke a good weed bro.what kind of pot?
wii U obsolete because of a little gimmick.
not trying to insult you but youre one of the stupids that get convinced by this gimmick.
do you know why this announced only now?
its to tone down the upcoming release of the wii u by saying:
-hey ! you want to control your console with something that have a screen?
look no more we have a 250$ controller with a 250$ console that can do it.
it was always like that.
remember when sony announced bluray and microsoft toned the announce by revealing the HD DVD format?
same with all the companies who announced a cd drive addon when psx was announced.
so please think before you speak as this website used to have people who thinks more objectively and not :
nintendo sucks,mario for kids,xbox or ps3 ownz!
To go back to reality:
Sony have a weird way of seeing things:
-lets make a HD portable with xAAA QA anisotropic filter and antialiasing .
-sounds great ,what about games?
-what games! people dont care about games kazu ,they like the screen, the hd,the graphics,it's coooooooool!
-Ok maybe i will call our kids in naughty dog to make a game or two.
-do as you wish,i just need the console to be slick and smooth.
Of course this a huge oversimplification of a business focused on appearances than actual gaming experience.
Of course the word''gaming experience'' is extensively used today for anything by some community managers who thinks its cool to say it.
sorry for the offtopic

I'm digging the idea of using the vita as a controller.

I loved having a smaller second screen on my Dreamcast, especially when playing sports games. The ability to pick plays without my opponent seeing them was very nice.

If Sony is smart they can beat Nintendo to the punch.

It s a nice feature from Sony and it s really up to the game editor to use it or not, or in wrong way (as DLC or "mandatory" to enjoy fully the game)

Mr.Goodfrag Sony always finds a way to mess up. If they want to battle against Nintendo they will eventually lose. If they can't take care properly from their OWN products..well.
Not a bad idea at all, but hope they don't **** up again but i think im asking too much.

This is Sony "innovating". I wonder why they are always trying to catch up with Nintendo. I mean, both consoles aim at very different markets. I wish they would focus on useful features like screen mirroring from the PC or something like that.

Yeah, this really reminds of Wii-U. Maybe Sony is trying to be like Wii-U before it launches.
Anyway, I don't think its comfortable to use vita as a controller and I already got use to controller that is pretty much the same since PS1 days.
So, its a good feature for those who like it.

if you were referring at Wii you're right,if you're referring to Wii-U your'e wrong
as Wii-U is trying to tackle the PS3(graphics wise, title wise) and at the same time using the wii motion incentive.
the battle was never about how sony will counter attack ,but when they will launch their ps4.
we can say in dreamcast era ,the last who release its console is the winner, now the trend have changed.youre last at launch, you loose.
in any case this feature needs two consoles.and since we can safely assume that the ps3 have release 70% of the overall title.i dont see dev using it that much, they have other means of making dollars *cough DLC cough*

Sega did this over a decade ago. Nintendo is stealing it just as much as Sony is.

He/she's right, try looking on youtube. Working motion control Sony prototypes existed way before Wiimote.

Nope.

An early prototype version of the Move was demonstrated in a technology demo known as "Magic Duel" in 2001 - PlayStation Move Wiki
Meanwhile in Nintendo's camp...

Development of a motion enabled controller began in 2001, coinciding with development of the Wii console.
They started development in 2001, while Sony already had a working prototype. Nintendo copied Sony after Sony demo'd their prototype.

sorry but that a very naive way of thinking.
let me do a little analogy here.
in 2002/3 a japanese created a way for making things invisible .the same time US army had arrived to the same conclusions although they have been working on it since the 80 but i was widely known that is the japanese guy was the inventor of that technique.
my question:
in this case who is right?
people should stop this stupid brevet frenzy thing.
if we counted prototypes let me assure nintendo has twice brevets than microsoft and sony.
its what the end consumer gets that matter the other is called intellectual masturbation...

you can't keep saying its sonys or nintendos idea first, who ever implements it properly with sucess with receive credit from the general population

good for those who have vita but this new feature does not help, this should of been there from day one to help its sales now its been a few months and most users are have moved on to new gadgets
