• PlayStation VP of hardware marketing John Koller says Sony will support aging console as long as development scene is running; claims $270 price point for new model a result of consumers’ call for value.

The PlayStation 3 isn’t going away anytime soon. PlayStation VP of hardware marketing John Koller told GameSpot this week that Sony will continue to support the aging console until at least 2015, and possibly longer, provided the development scene continues to exist.

Elsewhere in the interview, Koller defended the new PS3 model’s $270 price point-above the current $250 entry level unit-saying gamers have called for value, and claiming Sony is coming through with its new bundle.

This thing looks very cheaply made and its price should also be rather cheap too.

You are also forgetting that the price of the new console is a bundle not just the console so it is cheaper.

Its not cheap. Have you seen what is inside of it.
Console makers sell systems at a loss, And gain money from games. Nintendo is the only exception.

That's right. You can actually work out all the playstations you'll get to experience before you die (assuming Playstation lasts that long)

Assuming I live till 80 and I continue to buy playstation, I'll be playing on my Playstation 8 before I croak

we'r closer to china and seeing how most of the sh!t gets made there it would make sense if it was cheaper but unfortunately the world dosent work that way

i like the look of the unit tho

I'm not sure I'll continue supporting $ony with their next PlayStation consoles, I am actually considering this generation the last that I've bought since they've improved and all three took it to the next level (Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony). I.e, graphics, online services (Xbox LIVE), larger disc size (Blu-ray) and motion sensor (Kinect, Wii, PS Move).

What are they going to offer to make the purchase of the new PS4, Xbox Infinity (codename) and Wii U worthy? I'll perhaps just buy a Wii U since Nintendo knows how to get me by the balls (I just love Nintendo titles -- I grew up playing Nintendo games other than Sega's Mega Drive).

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Wii U edition looks friggin' hilarious, combats Midgets Vs. Giants, Nintendo characters' customs and whatnot, TTT2's gonna be a lot of fun on Wii U than PS3 or Xbox 360.

You guys actually believe this "10 year plan support" type talk?

It's just how the market has gone for them, while they are still making money on a product - it will be supported. That is down the to consumer, not Sony.

They are owned by shareholders, not angels.

My previous inaccurate post, further flatters the Uk there. Didnt know the precise price in the US!! $199 makes the UK look like an isle full of Class A citizens on £100k+ annum salaries...

The U.S. $199 is with a two year contract with AT&T. The U.K. is doubtless without contract. Without contract the phone is probably $600+ USD

Looking at it, the phone is not offered without contract in the U.S. by Apple themselves... You would probably have to go through a carrier to get one and Verizon is the only one who has the iPhone sim unlocked (can be used internationally).

The price point is probably similar to Canada's: http://store.apple.com/ca/browse/hom.../family/iphone

That's locked to the carrier - i.e subsidized for the $199 price - You're paying $199 and have a 2 year contract!!!
You won't get a sim free iPhone 5 for $199. Which is what you get for the £529 in the UK.
There are deals available in the UK for 2 year contracts where the iPhone 5 is free.

Obviously the relevant point is total outlay and an iPhone 5 is pretty much swings and roundabouts wherever you buy it in the world.

Cheesethief, don't forget that PSPgo was a complete failure that's no longer in production.

I had one, but then couldn't do jack shít with it, like play UMDs, plug a standard USB cable, use a normal PSP Memory Stick Pro Duo card and the damn buttons were too small for my hands.

The PSP Go is very much in production in the U.S. and has been since release. It got dropped in other countries, but the PSP Go is nothing but a PSP and the PSP will be supported until at least its tenth year. The PSP 1000 and 2000 were dropped, the PS3 Phat and Slim have been dropped, all in the same way as the PSP Go. Model variations drop, old age or low sales doesn't matter which, the but the console itself is supported for ten years. Meaning you will get tech support and games for the lifetime of the console, no matter which model you own.

PSPgo got dropped in Japan, and in Europe they made a new PSP called "PSP Street" which is a cheaper PSP 3000 with UMD.

Please read the entirety of my post. Specific models do not count, it is the console as a whole that is supported for a decade.

The U.S. does not get the PSP N1000 "Street."

It is being rumored that Sony does make a good profit on this new PS3 model. However, we must not forget that Sony is in financial problems right now, so dropping the price is not necessarily the best option. It isnt sure that the PS3 sale will increase a lot if they drop the price, so simply increasing the value in the package (more harddrive space) could mean that they maintain the same sales as before, but make more money.

I do expect to see a new PS3 pricedrop sometime early next year though.
