Edit: this isn't the first device I've seen with diagonal processor. Some newer PCs come with the processors tilted better cooling or something. Also I wonder if this Ps3 will be vulnerable to swap tricks since I bet I could gerry rig the sensor so say it's always shut.

This ps3 looks cheap ,but the bluray drive look more "resistant" than the old slotin model .

If $ony had priced (12GB or a new 40GB edition) this at £100 or so, just imagine how many sales they would gather in such a small time.

It's like they don't want peoples' money so they put up low quality consoles at absurd prices.

Discontinuing PS3 Slim 3000 (is 2000 still being produced?) is an awful decision but it's mainly going to hurt the end user, not $ony.

So if this is running 4.15 firmware , It must be based on firmware from the older consoles , Otherwise it would of been lower surely ? Good to see it stripped down bare :-)

I doubt you can downgrade this ps3 .
If it's the same "system" as last ps3 slim 160go ,you can downgrade only to the first installed firmware .

This means the end of YLOD, looks like Sony FINALLY did something right.

Now remove the Cell IHS off your next model and I might actually buy it.

Uh a IHS is generally considered a good thing, sure it may not be like a pc where you replace parts on it but a good IHS prevents the chips from breaking, old processors did not have it and it did happen quite a bit with pc builders that they broke their chip. A IHS should never really cause any ylod issues unless they fill them with bad thermal paste that dries out and a cooling that cannot cool fast enough with the dried out thermal compound however this is something that can be avoided quite easily by using better materials. Not something you should remove the IHS as its a good protection of the chip itself.

They DO use bad paste. It's the ONLY reason people who change their thermal paste on their FAT PS3's still get YLOD.
I've had a FAT CECHA before, I removed both IHS's on it, changed the thermal paste and boy did it run cooler. (Naturally I did put the IHS back to make contact with the heatsink but I didn't actually glue them back, I let the paste keep them in place)
Yes, Sony can avoid that problem by using better paste, but the problem is that they don't want to.

IMO, IHS's should only be used on PCs. They are useful there, because of people building their own PCs, and you normally don't keep the same PC for more than five years at most (and most of the time less than that). However, this isn't a PC. These are devices that are being built only in Sony factories, people don't build their own PS3's. Also, a game console should last much longer than a PC, and using IHS with poor paste goes against that. (Then again, they could have done that on purpose...)
And on a system that's supposed to last at least 5-10 years, the paste they used on the IHS is of too poor quality. People who can disassemble PS3's should be able to replace the stock thermal paste to make their system last longer, which IHS doesn't allow.

F*ck.... that lid looks wayyy too flimsy.

First thing that came to mind was PSX hacking using a biro lid to press the button down, and disc swap...... wonder if something can be jammed in the slidey lid thing to make it run TOPLESS.

i wonder if you could modify the board to fit in a ps3 slim model and use the blue ray drive from your ps3 dont like its case cheap looking and call it a mixed ps34 model it reminds me of the ps1 when the lid flipped up but this one it slides sideways and it will break easy as the ps1s did

Price for regular ps3 is also according to ps vita (=same price, ps3 250 gb= ps vita wifi, ps3 500gb=ps vita 3G) and the fact is "Playstation product".

So with high price they keep an image of high tech product and quality. For low price Sony has ps2 and psp.
Their marketing department (around thw world and previously) is not the best to work with other department so we can have this ps vita case or walkman (with full of mistakes or really weirdo software implementation)

1: A decent thermal paste lasts you for far longer than 5 years.
2: Most CPU's actually solder their IHS.
3: A lot of people keep their pc for far longer than 5 years nowadays especially non gamers which FYI still need cpu's.
4: Even in a console the extra protection of a IHS on a larger chip is a good thing its just them ****ing it up with bad thermal compound.
5: if they had better cooling they could have gotten away with the thermal compound but they don't.

I like how the laser lens is easy to access. So you can clean it regularly.
Because as most of you know, the laser goes bad mostly from playing games and movies with a dirty lens.

Hi atlask, can you post a picture of the bottom side of the heatsink?? i saw the videos but that specific part is not included in the videos.

this design from sony doesnt make any sense at all! the RSX is one of the parts that makes more heat and its not covered by any heatsink at on top of it! and no IHS ???? what are they doing a YLOD or GLOD machine?

by looking at this is sony making a huge mistake on the newer slim model??
the heatsink below the cooler must be so tiny and small too because the cooler takes the space.

      wtf??

i would stay away from this model

That's the CELL. The RSX didn't have an IHS at all (I've watched the whole vid).
Proof of it is that there is text burned on the die itself, models with IHS don't have that (I know, I've removed RSX IHSs before).

Also, about the RSX, you see the 2 screw holes just below the heatsink on the shield plate? There's a heat pipe below that makes direct contact with the RSX die. The pipe goes from the die to under the heatsink. That's how it gets cooled.

It's pretty ironic that it's labeled MSX 001.

      David Wilson:
"Ok guys, think, think... we need to make the PS3 cheaper and crappier! Any ideas?"

      SRGWWGRSA*:
"Oh, I have an idea! Lets rip out the hard drive! When our customers find out that most of our games need a hard drive to play, they could always buy one separately."

      David Wilson:
"GOOD THINKING! That way we make more money and we can take our customers in the ass, just like we are used to. Now all we need is a name to put on the motherboard... any sugestions Hirai?"

      Hirai Kazuo:
"Let me see... lets call it MSX 001 *grin*, after all, without a hard drive the console isn't much more usefull than an MSX is it?"

      David Wilson:
"Great! The new console is born!"

Is really ''slim'' the new PS3, huh? But the question is, you can downgrade to 3.55?

No downgrade possible ,the last ps3 slim 160 go was "anti-hack" modele in 3.6x fw .
You want to find a new 3.55 ps3 ,buy a pack with 320go with an old games (little big planet or 2 platinium games )
