It’s worthwhile to note that this Nielsen graph showing the most-wanted tech gadgets for kids age 6 – 12 in the US is titled “Interest in Buying in the Next 6 Months.” That’s probably an incorrect assertion, since we haven’t seen any 8-year-olds working the late shift at McDonald’s recently. It should be titled, “Interest in Having Someone Buy This For Me in the Next 6 Months.”
Kids’ holiday wishlists are dominated by the iPad, snagging the top spot from 48 percent of respondents age 6 – 12. Right behind that is the Wii U, with 39 percent. More iDevices complete the top five, though Kinect has 31 percent, and 3DS/3DS XL and other DS models grab 29 and 28 percent, respectively. PS3 comes in with 26 percent, followed by the Xbox 360 with 25 percent. Strangely enough, 18 percent of kids want a PSP, while just 14 percent would take the Vita.
In a separate study of people 13 and older, the iPad remains king with 21 percent, making the split more even across all devices. Wii U is fourth in this group with 17 percent, while the PS3 gets 8 percent and the Xbox 360 7 percent. The Vita surpasses the PSP, 4 percent compared with 3 percent.

Sadly this is true.... well at least in my house it is. I got my kids a wii u for christmas and my daughter is still on this kick about a tablet. When I mentioned how awesome the new wii was she was basically like "Well I didnt play the first wii, and you already gave me an awesome 360 for my birthday. I want a tablet for Christmas"
Kepp in mind my 8 year old daughter is not your typical little girl.

Tablets or Ipad's are powerful and more *Easy* or *friendly* for anyone.
If you want to go cheap or you don't have so much money you go for some android tablet if you have some money most of the parents for their childrens buy Ipads.
In some weird way...we are going back to basics.
Complexity is no longer *interesting*, it's just to *feel* with your fingertips and experience that instead of using some controller. (Like any console). A new generation is coming...the *touch screens*.

My 3,2 &1 yr old all love Ramstein, Muse, Kasabian, QOTSA & Rob Zombie but I let them use my S2 to do puzzles. I tried to put Thomas and Peppa pig on my phatty DS but the screen is so horribly small and unresponsive I nearly threw it at the wall.
I'm a gamer from the early 80s but I find myself playing casual games on my S2 more often than my consoles or PC now.
Still.. there will be no crApple product in my house ever!!

As for the Wii U thing... You know what hurts the most? I LOVED Nintendo. Growing up with the SNES was an irreplaceable experience that I will never forget for as long as I live. I just hate seeing one of my old favorite gaming companies reduced to ash.

So far many companies because of lack of creative tought AND innovation they got stuck on a loop where is better to release something even if it's mediocre and poor on sales than release nothing.
Problem is if we add that lack of creativity along with no innovation plus products that people has to understand first in order to properly use it.
You know the outcome = Mayhem.
We are in some kind weird dimension *market-wise* where an Ipad or tablet is 10 times more effective than some portables from big companies.
Also you have gadgets like Kinect and Move that is only gadget nothing more. How many games you have on both of them? that you can really enjoy without recalibrating the damn camera or the whole device because lack of light or another stupid issue (and im not adding nintendo to this).
They keep adding more **** to a single product to avoid bury it and squeeze all they can while it lasts.
Think about the past and how many sci-fi movies, picture the future specially this year. Magnetic energy, flying cars, robots everywhere.
And think about now. What you see? i only see zombies..with cellphones.
Including me.
The Ipad have something that others has not and nope im not a big fan of Apple products.
Crystal clear vision, you touch, you can do any kind of crazy stuff on them even Jailbreaking some of apple products is Legal.
There's goes the experience going to basics.
I will leave this question open to anyone. How come a game like Angry birds got so famous? because has some sick graphics, physics? or just because is something basic that anyone no matter age/gender can play?.

They want to get out of their ordinary routine of work/study/etc and play something that don't demands too much *brain cells* to understand it.
They scape from complexity and Angry birds is the epiphany of something basic that gone massive because you don't think/act like you do on daily basis you just only have to calculate the angle in a way that silly bird will hit those green pigs.
Is getting back to basics like i said, many people miss using their imagination. (and i will not add to this equation read some book)
Atari/commodore era for example, all the games had the same graphics = black/white and dots and was funny as hell to play that.
You give people many options, they will get more confused.
If you reduce that spectrum of options to some basic ones they will work and relax faster.
