Simplicity v2.58.3
A Simple Kind of Loader
Brought to you by @stephencapes

Simplicity is a modified version of the well known backup loaded “Iris Manager”. The source version I started with is v2.58 by Estwald. The main reason for this fork was to simplify the GUI and make it look a little more polished. This is my first PS3 Homebrew release so go easy on me and let me know area’s I could improve.

Changes from Iris Manager to Simplicity v2.58:
-Background colors have been removed, leaving a simple black.
-Music has been completely removed.
-Date, Time, Temp, and Device Space has also been removed.
-In cover flow mode game sorting by console has been removed.
-FTP Icon’s color has been changed
-Other minor GUI changes were made.
-Navigation controls have been altered ( “X” is accept, “O” is back, “Triangle” is game settings, “Square” is not used, “Select” is global settings “, “Start” is not used )
The rest stayed the same.

Changes for Simplicity v2.58.1
-added back the USB overlay

Changes for Simplicity v2.58.3
-removed game config icons (Direct Boot & Requires Disc) from game selection
-made adjustments to the grammar throughout…
-removed unnecessary notifications
-removed the “Favorites” function
-changed the font to the default PS3 font
-added support for DEX versions 4.41, 4.46, and 4.50
-cleaned up some of the coding and changed version to 2.58.3 (2.58.2 was a beta for DEX support)

Other changes will be coming…

It is recommend to remove any old version before installing this version!!!

Sounds promising, but where are the demonstrative (of its simplicity) screen shots?!?!

Sounds good. I will actually give Iris Manager a try if you make it with a nice simple effect. My CFW and all is also about simplicity, so a backup manager which looks simple too would be nice actually. Or maybe a background that we can change by ourselves?

Nice to see a fork of Iris with the source released, unlike others I've seen. Good job!

I'm the type of person who likes minimalist stuff and quite liked this fork (its pretty fast).

Tested on MLT 4.50, no problems so far.

Screenshots are unnecessary, since is the same interface (iris / ita / evilnat) that we already know. Anyway...

Edit: @stephencapes

Constructive criticism: Removing the flashing USB/HD icon from the game icons was not a good idea. As you can see in the picture above, I have two identical GTAV icons and have no idea which one is on the internal

Fixed DEFAULTDNB. Added "Read more" to main thread. After all is Op's credit or just merge it later. Being colorblind with this new *colors* is a *new nightmare* for me. stephencapes I didn't have time to test it, yet. That's why i didn't reply to your PM. I will test it later when i'm over my place and give some proper feedback but so far LoboGuara done it.

Sadly this is not working on DEX 4.50 still getting an error (Error: Unsupported firmware!)

Looks like I will be stuck with PS3ita Manager until a backup manager I like is made compatible nice effort though this is what I would prefer simple is better.

I been using iris some months ago and i think i will keep using it, but i really like the concept of simplicity manager, and i think some of your changes will be added (or removed if you like, hehee) in the official iris in long term

Frst i have to say the button mapping is perfect (same than XMB and the rest of the firmware)... X=accept, O=cancell(or back), and triangle=options
In the official iris thread there was some talk about this button mapping, not sure if you have taked care of it... but you have to add compatibility with japanese button layout (X and O functions replaced, and triangle the same)
The same library that is used originally to read the "datetime zone" from xregistry.sys is also used to read this "button layour setting"... this is something that is better to not remove to keep compatibility with japanese users

And about things that can be removed:
--------------------------------------------------------
-Fan controll
I use fan controll all the time, but in long term it will be needed to remove it (probably there will be other ways to control the fan, e.g: with a plugin.sprx)

-USB wakeup functions
Is part of the same payload that makes the fancontroll function... by removing it you can disable the payload completly. There is people that really needs this functions (because they uses external HDD that enters in inactivity after some time without read requests)... but is also posible to covert this to a plugin.sprx

-Warning message at boot time (remember you have to plug an USB drive... etc... etc... )
This message is only valid for some users, actually... if you have all the games in internal HDD, and your "device_ID" has been recorded by the app previously (in the first boot, or because the app contains your identifyer hardcoded).... then there is no need to plug an USB device at all... so this warning message is warning about a thing the user of this example doesnt needs to care. And is adding a delay of 2 or 3 seconds in the boot time

-Informative message when returning to XMB after a game has been selected (the BD emu has been mounted in path... etc... etc... etc...)
This message i think appears when using discless + BDemu from external USB, the message is informative, but in the practise has no importance because there is nothing the user can do with this info, the user doesnt needs to know how is working internally. The message is adding a delay of 2 or 3 seconds when returning to XMB

yeah got it buddy, hows about this font?
http://famousfonts.org/download-font/playstation-font/
classy, recognizable and looks good but a bit small.

also stephencapes i dont know if your button config will make sense with the archive manager help screen.

edit: it works fine just tested... i'll have a play with the param.sfo btw you can edit inside Iris/Simplicity edit and restart to see changes.

I have already implemented the font changes, also cleaned up some other stuff, yea the controls don't affect archive manager or fan control. I've also removed so different prompt screens and fixed the grammer of others. I have not released the package or the source yet, because I am waiting for feed back in regards to dex support. What exactly are you hoping to achieve from playing with the param.sfo, I already have it set for the app.

i was thinking maybe disable in game xmb but with remote play because ps1 games overlays two screens when ps button is pressed, ps1's config screen and xmb. it looks better but it disables screenshots on ps1 games.. that doesn't work anyway because of the overlay.

if you want to try its 11 00 00 00 three dots after the version number in hex.

Durr, also disables screenshots in Simplicity .. lol, i'll go back to licking the rain from peoples windows..

Will let you no how this pans out very soon thanks for the beta version of the DEX.

Notes:------

I am on 4.50 DEX PS3ita and it loads great and mounts the game to both the App_Home and BD that is inserted.

Games are all running fine tested PS3 backups and also PSX backups and they both work fantastic no problems at all no stuttering or lag is present.

Frame rates are all great for the PSX backups.

All games tested are listed here.

PS3:

Deadpool
Assassins Creed Black Flag
BO2
BO
Duke Nukem Forever
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit

PSX

Dino Crisis & 2
Crash Bandicoot 1, 2 & 3
Spyro the Dragon
Metal Gear Solid

So amazing work it is flawless thanks so much for this :D

Another suggestion, not related with efficiency or simplicity, but mostly to have a bit more order in the installation folders and more modularity...

You could make some folders inside USRDIR (not a huge tree of folders, but just a couple more) to move all the files that doesnt needs to be in the root of the installation folder, e.g:
USRDIR/Modules/ <---- for the patched .sprx's, also any other self/bin/app that doesnt belongs to the "core" of the manager (e.g: ftp, filemanager, and fancontroll could be modules and compiled separatedly)
USRDIR/SettingsGAMES/ <------- only for game settings (easy to make a backup of them incase is needed to uninstall the app and reinstall again)
USRDIR/SettingsGENERAL/ <---- any other setting, included manager_setup.bin, fancontrol.dat, lastgame, or other files added by the user to customize the manager, like font.ttf, music.mod, etc...

There are other folders that can be moved (PKG, cache, config, self), but config is replaced by the 2 "settings" folders i said and i dont know what is the use of "self" folder but i guess is replaced by "modules"

Good to see that. One more thing, is there a way we can add a custom background? I know this MIGHT make it less simple but it would give the app a good look while remaining simple.

This would require a massive over haul of the way the source is layed out... it's not out of the question and i agree that it would be useful but it will take time and when completed would be released in a major update...

As of right now I am going to leave it as is... I might make some changes so that one could place a png or jpg into a certain and have the file named a certain way and have it look for it and use it...

I totally agree with you.
It's not a "simple" with that.
Or we need two versions of manager:
1) without fan control. 2) with fan control. Or super simple mini version - remove all except manager. Users love iris for fake bd emulation.

Thanks.

By the way is everyone good with the latest update for this backup manager? Mine either shows a black screen or doesn't mount the game at all. I deleted the previous version before installing v2.58.3.

Nevermind it seems to be working fine now.

I agree, see I'm running a PS3 Slim that I've lapped the heatsinks and moddified the case to allow a vent right above the fan. My temps stay low with out the need to adjust anything.

For anyone who is interested, I am creating another version without fan control and archive manager... but it will also not have the USB polling / Wakeup ability till i am able to create a plug in for that option only... I will reply back when i get it done... i will need people to test it out before i "Publish" it

What is the purpose of releasing a software without features that already can be turned off through the settings?

IMO, your time would be more productive if you ADD features, instead of just take features out.

I agree to an extent, and btw I am very fond of your releases. If there was a simple way or even a way in general for the end user to turn off these features or "hide" them then I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing. With the community that utilizes homebrew apps growing everyday, the demand for diversity grows as well. Sometimes users like me enjoy things that are just simple and work. Over my years I have found that sometimes less is better, less functions mean less coding, less coding means less chances for errors or bugs. I personally use FTP for all my file management, so a archive manager is of no use to me and is just taking up head room and is opening my system up to bugs and freezes... same goes for fan control and other features... Not to mention my 3 - 9 year olds use it so... as a parent I KNOW that they will mess around with what they shouldn't. Know what I mean... If someone wants the latest features, then by all mean please give MultiMAN a whirl... This is just something for those who don't... then again this is just my opinion..

Ok, now I understand it better the purpose... I'm also a supporter of KISS principle, "simple is beautiful", "less is more", etc.

The fan control and file manager are already "hidden" in the configuration menu. According to your poll, 64.71% don't want these features removed.
And there are more options that probably your kids will also want to try and eventually you will end with more versions removing stuff.

Wouldn't it more simple just to block the configuration menu? It could ask for a parental code (or give access based on the parental level from the xRegistry.sys), or just change it to a hard combination of buttons... well, these are just ideas.

Exactly, I'm glad you get it now. I'm glad you bring KISS up, here is a little exert from WIKI... "The KISS ("Keep it simple, stupid") principle states that most systems work best if they are kept simple rather than made complex; therefore simplicity should be a key goal in design and unnecessary complexity should be avoided." Hence the title of this fork.. Hiding or even using parental controls still does not lessen the complexity of the source. It still opens it self up for bugs, revisions, and user error. I understand that the poll currently states certain users want the features to remain, so I plan to keep Simplicity but also adapt Simplicity Ultra Lite branch which will be a loader only. I guess you could say "SPOILER ALERT"!!

I enjoy our conversations aldostools keep them coming... btw I have not had a chance yet to check but have you update your tools for 4.50? like the game update tool?

Bump'ity bump huh... Sorry that I have not released an update lately. I have changed over to some new hardware and haven't re-installed my environment yet to develop with. I have not had a chance to look into it yet... but something I would like to figure out is how exactly ps3netsrv by deank publishes content information to webman / Multiman... I would love to piggy back off it for cobra 7 / Iris Manager usage ... I personally am using Multiman right now because of the Network streaming ability with ISO's.. perhaps aldostools can chime in and give any insight he might have....

I use the ps3netsvr in a binary form... my GUI just wrap it in a Windows application

However, I think deank posted the src of his modified version some days ago. Try searching in psx-scene
