Nothing new about products lifecycle, but some predictions (and using some common sense) hint us that PS4 lifespan could be considerably shorter than PS3.
Fergal, made some interest comment: “I think there’s reasons to believe that the next cycle might be shorter in markets such as the UK.”
    Question is why?..

    To quote:

Sony’s UK managing director has indicated that the PlayStation 4 will likely have a shorter lifecycle than that of the PlayStation 3.

Fergal Gara made the comments as part of an interview with TechRadar, stating “I think there’s reasons to believe that the next cycle might be shorter in markets such as the UK.

It’s a comment that stands in contrast to Microsoft’s view of the next generation of games consoles. In an interview with GamesIndustry International, Xbox’s Canadian head of marketing, Craig Flannagan, said: “It’s probably going to be a pretty long generation. We’re probably here for a while because we’re built for the future. This is a console that will last you, conservatively a decade, if I had to put a bet down today.”

Where Flannagan sees longevity, Gera appears to see our appetite for new technology as something that is steadily increasing. “It’s probably a sign of the times and how much has changed in seven years, but I think the willingness and the appetite to pick up new technology fast has probably changed quite a bit,” he said.

Promising initial sales of the PS4, the fact that the eighth generation of consoles function more as unified entertainment hubs than game units, and the fact that Nostrodamus is not on staff at Sony mean that future predictions are still just educated guesswork with a hint of marketing savvy.

As Gara concludes, “Does that mean this is going to be a much bigger cycle? Maybe. Or it might mean that it’s just a bit more compressed into the first few years, that the latter years are a little softer.”

    What you think?.

What a way to make people go to PC for gaming, get rid of the thing that makes people buy consoles: lifespan of the console. People buy a console knowing they won't need to buy a new one for years yet. Honestly speaking, graphics sure do look better on the PS4, but not quite so much as the jump from PS1 to PS2 or PS2 to PS3. Increase the amount of times you release a console with little to no visual difference and you will lose your install base to the competition, be it another console or the ever present PC.

      IMO;
They should have waited another year and release something more innovative.
      The ps4 is more like a ps3.5 than a ps4.
I'll still be buying it eventually tho.
When the good exclusives get released...

The ps3 and 360 era was kinda one time thing - - -- Sony invested a lot into CELL and felt the ps3 could have been pushed more to the limits ; whereas, MS had the one time opportunity to keep pushing because of the Kinect hype. Nintendo didn't come with anything special for years - so ... here we are. At the pace everything keeps evolving around chips and mobile devices - i guess the typical era of console gaming is about to witness it's dawn.

If they are already talking about PS4 lifecycle, means that's is closer than a PC than anyone tought.
I mean PC users can relate to that, changing hardware parts, etc.

If they don't find a *way* to make it easier for console users...well they will have to face some serious ****.
To expand that lifecycle, instead of killing it. We don't want a PS5 in less than two years...or do we?.

Thanks Sony, makes me feel a lot more comfortable about getting one... -_- Although I do still feel more comfortable than getting an Xbox One that could set my house ablaze...

it seems like Sony has lost its way. the ps4 doesn't feel like a PlayStation any more.
when the ps1 was released it blew all competition out of the water, it even gave pc gaming at the time a run for its money it terms of exclusives, such as time crisis, ridge racer, crash bandicoot, syphon filter, medal of honour, and heaps to name.

ps2 was released, and it just made thing even better, with the added support of all ps1 games, and most accessories, so by ps2 launch, we already had about 1000 games + accessories, gave us ground breaking DVD-Player, and dont let me get started with the exclusives.
I remember at the time a Had a gaming PC at the time, but always wanted a PS2 WHY? exclusives, such as time crisis 2-3, gran turismo, Medal gear solid, and all those epic dreamcast games that got ported over. so by the end of its lifespan it was a power horse gaming machine.

Ps3 got released and yeah, not so great Unfortunity, from coming 1st two generation in a row, to coming last this gen. Really shows something about sony. i dont care how much you love the PlayStation brand, but the PS3 was a massive fail. apart from Naughty Dog, releasing some great games.

Now Ps4 is released, and to be honest i am not really excited about it at all, i have a gaming pc now, like in ps2 games, but i find no reason to buy it. from the lack of Backwards compatibility to the lack of games, to the lack of mp3, mp4 and external hdd support. WHY would i buy it... No games and i cant use it to play Jpeg, mp3 and Mp4s, so what will i use it for.

I thought the PS4 would get back on track, but why the looks of it, it has gotten further off track.

In the mean time, i will be playing my 60gb Ps3, with all my ps1, ps2 and ps3 iso's. plus media playback.

and when i get bored of that, properly look into XboxONE. most of us were on Sega or Nintendo when PS1 was released. and it seems we might soon have to jump ship if things stay like this. We are already losing against Xbox 4-0. they have already released Forza5, Killer Instinct, Rome, and Dead Rising 3. that's 4 epic games. and what do us sony fanboys have, KnacK and a generic FPS called Killzone. and soon they will be getting TitanFall.

RIP the Play Station Brand 1994 - 2013

ryse wasnt too hot of a game played it @ a best buy and I didnt like it too much. Its true that i think the ps4 has less better exclusives than the xbox one but if you have a good gaming pc titanfall will be coming out for the pc so i wouldn't put that in the realm of exclusive. I do hope dead rising 3 gets ported one day.

Maybe they need to find a way to make PS4 upgradeable. I mean ram/gpu etc.
