This is a fairly easy process, the most trouble i had was trying to figure out where to put the switch. There is no room to work with.. I ended up taking out my card reader on my PS3 because i never use it and just mounted the switch there. You could possibly let it hang out. It's up to you. Just remember that if you plan to retain original functionality as far as the drive sensor and automatic load/unload motor, you will need 2 additional small on/off switches.

The Switch I purchased:

http://thumbnails.imajr.com/2-1-1027138.jpg (http://imajr.com/2-1-1027138)

1- Solder a wire from pin 6 to pin 1.
http://thumbnails.imajr.com/3-1-1027156

2- Solder a wire from pin 3 to pin 4.
[URL=http://imajr.com/4-1027157][IMG]http://thumbnails.imajr.com/4-1027157.jpg (http://imajr.com/3-1-1027156)

3- Solder a RED wire to pin 4, and a BLACK wire to pin 1. This will be your power wires that run to your Blu-ray load/unload motor. I'd say make the length about a foot just to be safe. You can cut off what you don't need later.
http://thumbnails.imajr.com/5-1027158.jpg (http://imajr.com/5-1027158)

4- Pin 2 and pin 5 are the power source. Doesn't matter which way you connect those. I'm using a plug-in power adapter with an output switch on it up to 12 volts. It's set at 3 volts.
http://thumbnails.imajr.com/6-1027159.jpg (http://imajr.com/6-1027159)
http://thumbnails.imajr.com/7-1027160.jpg (http://imajr.com/7-1027160)

That's the hard part if you can believe it. Now you gotta bust open the PS3. Very easy to do and no cutting or breaking involved.

1- Take the one bolt out on the side and slide the top off.

2- take the rest of the screws out and take the second top off. This will expose the Blu-ray drive.
http://thumbnails.imajr.com/8-1-1027161.jpg (http://imajr.com/8-1-1027161)

3- The Blu-ray drive has 2 plug-ins that need to be unplugged. After that it comes out freely.

A- A ribbon on the bottom
http://thumbnails.imajr.com/9-1027162.jpg (http://imajr.com/9-1027162)

B- A small plug-in on the left side
http://thumbnails.imajr.com/10-1027163.jpg (http://imajr.com/10-1027163)

Note: Your main goal is to get to some small screws on the bottom so that you can remove the metal cover. You may choose not to unplug anything. That's up to you.

4- Take the metal top off. you will see a small circuit board with 2 wires towards the front of the drive. This is a sensor that allows the game to be sucked in. You need to disable this by either cutting the small wires, Hooking up another small switch so you still retain original functionality, or put a small piece of tape over the sensor.
http://thumbnails.imajr.com/11-1027164.jpg (http://imajr.com/11-1027164)

5- Unscrew the plastic top and take that off. This will allow you to see much more of the drive on the inside.
http://thumbnails.imajr.com/12-1027165.jpg (http://imajr.com/12-1027165)

6- The plastic piece I'm pointing to in the picture above needs to come off. That will allow us to see the load/unload motor. One small screw will allow you to remove this plastic part.
http://thumbnails.imajr.com/13-1027215.jpg (http://imajr.com/13-1027215)

7- Once removed you will see the small motor which is what we're after and makes this possible. You'll see 2 small wires soldered onto the motor. RED and BLACK. You have another tough choice now, if you chose to add a switch to the load sensor above, you will
need to add a switch to one of the original motor wires also. This way, when you put your game in and the sensor sucks it in, the motor will work automatically like it did to start with.

If you have the sensor turned on with a switch, you need the motor turned on auto with a switch. That's where the 2 additional switches come in if you choose to retain original functionality. If you plan to load and unload games manually you only need 1 3-way switch and can disregard anything I've said about extra switches. The foot long wire you solder earlier to pins 4 and 1 now need to be soldered to the RED and BLACK terminals of your motor. I just touched my soldering iron to the terminals and removed the factory wires, tucked them away and soldered the ones from my switch to it.

http://thumbnails.imajr.com/14-1027216.jpg (http://imajr.com/14-1027216)

9- And that's pretty much it. Where you plan to mount the switch or switches is up to you. The way I have mine set up is when the switch is up the motor is sucking in. I start to put a game in and it sucks it in. When the game is in and the drive engaged I turn the switch to the middle position or off. Turn on the PS3 and the original game or Swap Magic will register with the XMB.

No need to actually boot the original game or swap magic because as long as the game is recognized by the system, it has passed any media checks. Next, I flip my switch down and the drive disengages and spits my game out. I then flip the switch back up
and insert my backup and turn the switch off. The whole time you do the swap, the PS3 will still say you have a game inserted. So if you choose to try this, you don't need anything special. 1-3 switches and an original PS2 game. Enjoy!

not sure if it is where its not fully supported in emulaton but i was playing vice city on my friends pal 60gb (i have 40gb) and it was very choppy. so you are probably better off getting a cheap second hand ps2 and modding it or using the memory card exploit

Here is another variation of the mod from the same thread as the original from afterdawn.com. I like this one because it looks cleaner and you can retain original functionality. The mod I'm speaking of starts in the middle of the page. PS3 Swap Switch Tutorial [page 6/24] (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/6/499497)

Considering this isn't your work you should put it in quotes.

It's also over a year old.

Apparently you didn't read all the way through. I gave credit to the source. This mod came from the same thread as the one at the top of the page that has been pretty much copied and pasted from the thread I mentioned. The original poster gave credit to the source and so did I.

I did read it. I am picky because I know how to use quotes and create references. I say such things for the betterment of the community.

It is appropriate to include a link to the source. Using quotes lets others know that the words are not that of the poster and that of the original author.

it is safe for Blu-ray driver?I hear it will damage.

BobbyBlunt

There is a safe swap time you must follow for a long healthy drive. This may sound like a pain but if you wait 8 and a half minutes before you do the swap and you use a high quality media then your drive will last as long as the mod never being installed.

Not that I can find. I'm not going to do this mod unless my modded ps2 bites the dust. Long live my launch fat PS2.

No kidding. It's very risky and I'd probably brake something lol

Only softmod here. I'd probably be better at surgery than soldiering. If I can pay someone to do it, then I would. Plus I have a 40, won't work even if I tried.

Um no...just run a PS2 emu on your PC :p

hmcr
11-10-2008, 02:51 AM
but pc emu is beyond ****ty! not all games work right and there is no more the most important factor of the ps2 : The controller! no vibration an no analog sticks makes the playthrough ****ty in any game.

so is there ANY other way? I already have the ps2 and the 40gb ps3 and am willing to do whatever to make the ps3 play the ps2 games.

only on 60-80 Gb vertions you can play ps2 games, but if you really want 2 play them install linux, then install a windows emulator and then install a ps2 emulator =P

nah youd get like 0.1 fps

even on my pc (core 2 quad 2.4ghz, 4gb ddr800, geforce 8800gs and vista x64) its really slow and thats with all optimizations, including SSEs 1,2 and 3 and using all 4 cores

Why would you install a Windows Emulator and a PS2 Emualtor, there is a Linux version of PCSX2,but even with that as RichB93 said it would be painfully slow.

opening the consol is somthing most people will not do. like myself i have a ps2 that is modded and runs backups without swap magic or a chip but i woulkd like to see the same thing working on a ps3. the method i use is free mc boot and ESR Public beta. heres a vid of anouther person doing this YouTube - Free MCBoot 1.4 Booting ESR (Memento) DVDVideo PS2 Backup (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=a6pot_hMHU8). basically if there a way of getting this programe to work on a ps3 or can a program like it be made as you can use ulauch on a ps3 but loading ESR on under DVD player or trying to boot it through free mc boot does not seem to have any effect

I'm using the switching method with a 80g PS3 with software emulation and burning with DVD Decrypter and SONY-D21-00 dvd+R. I have this problem where the screen freezes or loads eternally during some loading scenes when I play games that are close to 4g (if it's more than 4g most of the time it wouldn't even load). what possibalily can the problem be? I tried burning at multiple speed and with alcohol 120% but the result is the same. I've observed that the laser has stop moving but remains on during the freeze, does that mean it's not able to read that data from the disk? can anyone help?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
rephrased question: having problem burning large size (close to 4g & above) ps2 back up, can anyone suggest the best way (methods that you have used and worked) to do it to the best of his or her knowledge?

is that easier to answer?

try using a larger LBA game disc.....like GTA: san andreas or devil may cry 1. Those are the ones I use, with no problems yet....

Ok, I can tell you didnīt fully understand stayhyeīs answer.
The backup cannot be bigger in size than the original your using. so if the original game is only 3.8gb and your backup is 4.0gb then it either wonīt boot or it will boot, but when you you try to access data thatīs on the part of the disc thatīs over 3.8gb, then it will freeze. The TOC(table of content) said the game was only 3.8gb, so the ps2/ps3 knows something is wrong.
GTA:SA and DMC1 are big games thatīs why stayhye suggested those but you can use other games as long as itīs bigger than the backup you want to boot.
