Couldn't you just boot swap magic 3.6, go into the elf files, swap in a ps2 backup, and then boot an elf of swap magic 3.8 to boot a ps2 backup?

1. Don't double post.
2. If it runs genuine PS2 games, then it will work on your console.
3. No, It can't damage your console unless you mess up somehow.

I'm confused about something, can you use .iso images or do you have to use USBExtreme to extract a copy from your disc?
This probably has already been answered but I couldn't find it.

@ Steve use the usb extreme to extract the files from the iso. How do you patch the iso, because its not finding a file :S So i mount the iso and dragged the IOPRP234 to the desktop and i get file missmatch error :'(

Regarding Persona: ive managed to make the patch work, so now i have a patched file ^^

01-29-2009, 11:53 PM
I think it mean changing dnas not dna:
DNAS (Dynamic Network Authentication System) is an authentication system used in all recent online capable PS2 game titles. It is used for a number of things - for example, checking if you are using a backup of a game or a modchip. In this case the check takes place when you go online with the game. If a backup or modchip is detected then DNAS authentication will fail and you will not be able to play the game online

So we can play online ps2 games then? oh also if i may id like to report back on Tomb Raider: underworld PAL. Loading speed as to be expected with 1.1 usb. : ) FMV's work fine :D Sound: 100% Gameplay: really good :D Saving: saves to ps2 memory card, you have to start a new game to enable it.
Ps there is a circle type thing, when it loads, you have to point and hold the analogue stick to where you want to go to otherwise it goes straight to"resume game" - it will become clear when you play it. ^^ Tested on PAL 60Gb 03
Did some more testing and i can confirm that sega ages vol 1 Phantasy Star 1 + Phantasy Star 2 [JAP] works :D oh does anyone have or know where i can get a patch for the games listed above? Thanks

Im trying to get Sega Ages 2500 32[complete phantasy star collection] to work it has dummy files in it, could anyone tell me how to delete these as it might work without them..? Its a cd based game so im not sure why they would be in there, something like to fill more space on a dvd.
Like all my games, this one boots up [my screen switches from 60 -50] then the screen goes light as if it were to boot...so im wondering what could be up. as ive tried the other 2 jap games and they work without a problem ^^

There might be a even easier way to boot PS2 games then my tutorial posted for NTSC/JAP consoles if you are willing to try for me please let me know and post your results.
Basicaly what you do is follow the PAL tutorial here:
http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=8888
Use its download files etc..and all you have to do is rename the BEDATA-SYSTEM folder to:
BADATA-SYSTEM if you have a USA/NTSC console.
or
BIDATA-SYSTEM if you have a JAP console.
Would appreciate it if someone tried this and let me know.

2. Is Swap Magic Coder the same as 3.8?

Hey, I got the same problem when I first tried, but then it worked with another usb drive. So be sure to try out another stick if you have one, because at first I used a OCZ 4gb diesel usb stick and it froze, and then I decided to try a micro sd card with a usb reader adapter thing and it worked! But the weird thing is the OCZ 4gb worked after for running games, just not the initial installation.

I extracted the iso into a folder, used the patching program[porp130 or something] to patch the file. By going in the folder that was made from the iso, and selecting the file that needed to be patched, then re-created the iso with isomagic (probably recompiled incorrectly)
@Ryaku not all titles are compatible with usb advance atm :( i tried a NTSC-J iso that didnt work but some JAP games did. running on a PAL 60GB 03

I have an 80GB PS3 w/ BC. The Metal Gear Solid Edition. I got it to work! The key is to use the USBLD_02b.ELF file from the pal version instead of the USBLD_01.ELF file. Setup everything else like normal for the NTSC method including the virtual memory card but use the usbld2b.elf file. I got it to work with Final Fantasy X perfectly but when i tried Tekken 5 it froze at the namco screen. Not sure if it being a newer game has anything to do with it.

the usb-loader is only for ps2-images.... if the ps3 will be really hacked we will have an homebrew-loader for any kind of soft you can think of... but the security-concept is really good... e.g. the xbox isnt hacked... its the DVD-Drive that has a backdoor... maybe its the same on the ps3... we will see...

Contact the place you bought them from. If they don´t load on your ps3 or ps2 then the discs are bad. do you have NTSC system? it seems there are more faulty ntsc disc then PAL discs but I´ve seen a few faulty PAL discs too.
The vendors are aware that there are bad discs. Contact them and send yours back. unless the vendor is really shady, they should replace the discs.

@gaznov. you should only have 1 config file. if you keep your old config file and convert a new game that game will be added to the config file.

I used USButils to convert all my iso's to the root of my external HDD.
trhis way when i load USBadv, once the menu comes up it won't see the HDD.
Then i take out the flash drive (in my case the psp), then the files show.
I put in the flash drive again (HDD usb1, flash drive usb2) and start a game.
My thought is that the ul.cfg keeps track of what games there are, if you put another game in the same map as the ul.cfg it will be added to the list, i hope you get my drift.
Using 60 GB NTSC release PS3. I get to the Swap Magic menu screen, press UP + L2 and the screen freezes until I reset the game.

Contact them and send yours back. unless the vendor is really shady, they should replace the discs.
bye
@gaznov. you should only have 1 config file. if you keep your old config file and convert a new game that game will be added to the config file.
i just tried the dvd version in my ps2 and it works. Yes my ps3 is ntsc. i have 2.60 firmware. thats probably whats screwing everything up. please help

i'm really angry about this, as it's not fair on PAL users, why are we always last with everything? i want to be able to use my external 160gb hard drive but i can't because my ps3 is PAL! i have to use my psp slim instead :(
This is not true, i have a launch pal ps3 and i use my 1tb WD HDD.
I have 2 partitions, one half ntfs and one half fat32.
I use the fat 32 part.
The games are in the root there, i start usbadvance with swap magic 3.6 from the psp.
When the menu of usbadvance is there you have to take out the usb wire from the psp for a moment, then usbadvance will search for other usbports.
When the games show you have to put the usbcable of your psp back in and then start the game.
I have the Hdd connected in usbport 1 and psp in usbport 2, i hope you will have succes now.

Thirtyfour pages in so I'm not sure if it's been mentioned but not every PS2 game can possibly be booted. The PS3 will only read FAT32 formatted drives, which have a maximum file size limit of 4 GB. The PS2 used DVD media for games which have a capacity of 4.7+ GB. So any game that's over 4 GB probably can't be played on the PS3. :dontknow:

Yes, it does work on the MGS4 bundle. As long as you own a DVD copy of Swap Magic 3.6+, this method should work for you. This goes for any PS3 that can boot PS2 games (either through the EE chip or Software Emulation).

I have used USButils to convert iso to readable format and each game has a ul.cfg file (not sure if this is the id on the drive). Can you put games in folders or any other format to get multiple games to be dispalyed on the menu? Any help would be great. i'm having the same problem:hmmmm:

In my internal memory card 1 i have three files that says ps2 save builder and 1 corructed data, when i assign slot to mm2 sw magic runs and in sw magic menu I assign slot to mm1 again. i run USBLD_01 directly from sw magic and the elf access the data on my mm1 but when the USB loader menu opens I lost my USB connection. Any Ideas? I hope this stuff help the research.

I'm also on a mgs4 ntsc bundled ps3 and I'm experiencing similar problems, except I can't seem to get any elf to launch from my internal memory card at all. I can get into usbloader if I load it from my psp, which I'm using as usb device since none of my other devices seem to work in ulaunch.
For the record, I am also using Swap Magic 3.8 and my ps3 (80gb mgs4 bundle) is at firmware 2.53.
---------------------------
Edit:
I am also experiencing the problem of being thrown back into xmb when swap magic tries to load ulaunch from my internal memory card, just like griva001 was. However, when I try to launch elfs (on internal mc) through ulaunch, the screen just goes black and nothing else happens until I reset/quit.
---------------------------
Edit again (sorry):
Forgot to mention that I have partitioned my ps3's HDD and installed YDL on it (10gb part for YDL). Probably has nothing to do with the fact that I can't boot elfs from internal mc but you never know?

Hey, all. First post, so it means that obviously I'm here because of this. :)
Anyway, I have SM 3.6, and when I stick in my USB drive (the only one out of four that SM recognized...) and press Up+L2, I can access the file browser (the Launch.elf?). However, whenever I navigate to my flash drive, I access it, get nothing - just the dots at top to return - exit out of it, access it again, and the program freezes.
What's the deal with this? I've been trying to get this to work all day now - I even reformatted my flash drive even though it was already fat32 - but the furthest I can ever seem to get is to the file browser step, before trying to find the BADATA folder and having the program crash on me.
If anyone's got any tips, they'd be greatly appreciated.
And another question I've got, a short one: I'll be getting a Calvary CAUM 1TB hard drive; I've read that USBLoader will automatically recognize any external drives, even if SM won't. Is this true?
Thanks a lot, everyone. This USBAdvance looks like it'll be great... if only I could get the damn thing to work.
EDIT:
One thing to mention. My SM 3.6 seems to freeze at the intro screen if my flash drive is plugged in or my PS3 controller is on. I can easily rectify this by simply turning the controller on and plugging in the flash drive after the main menu pops up, but I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Thanks again.

@imperialarmy,
I think your not having to much luck with your usb compatibility. Tou can try usbloader 0.2b which doesn´t need the Bedata-folder. just rename it to the SMBOOT#.ELF you want and try booting it directly.
You might also want to try uLaunch.elf 4.27 that´s on this link to see if it doesn´t crash when acessing the filebrowser.
I had a usb device that would load with Swapmagic but then would not load any elf that had to reload usb drivers. I hope that´s not the problem. If none of this other stuff works you might want to try the small homebrew games to confirm if that is the problem.
http://www.haxnetwork.net/showthread.php?t=6858
edit. Yes the compatibilty for usbloader is much greater than swapmagic so you can use the usb device that starts with SM and then switch with another usb device.
one last thing, try not to have other usb devices plugged in because SM is very picky at startup.
imperialarmy
02-21-2009, 08:08 PM
Wow... that was fast. Heh.
So let me try to paraphrase all that:
1.) Try usbloader. Rename it to SMBOOT0.ELF and boot it... what do you mean by "directly"?
2.) Try uLaunch.elf 4.27. See if that crashes. (I assume I'd boot it using the same method as number 1? Or boot it using the Up+L2 method on Swap Magic?)
3.) Try those homebrew games... I think I'll skip on that one. :P Me, I don't know jack about the PS2, since when I had it, I didn't know anything about modding/hacking/etc.
4.) Lastly, don't plug any USB devices in. SM sucks that way.
That about right?
I'll try those and get back to you. Thanks again.
EDIT:
Tried out number 1, and it worked like a charm! Thanks a lot. I booted up USBLoader perfectly.
...now I'll be testing whether I can get my Kingston drive seen by USBLoader. (I've read some bad things, but... well, won't hurt to try.)
EDIT 2:
Crap. Y'know, seeing as how Kingston is usually such a great general-purpose flash drive, I'm surprised that it wasn't detected by USBLoader. I know I shouldn't be, seeing as how they're supposed to be spotty an' all, but still, I am. God, I hope my new external hard drive will work, because if it doesn't, that'll be $100 down the drain... well, not really, but it'll still suck. Anyway. Thanks, aries. I'll be back in a few days or so with some more questions. Maybe.

Hey guys,
I've been trying to get this to work on a NTSC 60GB PS3 with 1.50 firmware and I haven't had any luck. I followed the tutorial in this thread perfectly and had no luck so I even tried The SUPER easy method in the PAL version thread as well. I used a Western Digital 500GB USB hard drive at first, but then started all over again with a PSP.
The furthest I get is up to the USB Loader. I click on a game and after the print calls flash off I'm left with the PS3 completely frozen with a blank screen. Only way to escape it is by holding the power button down for two beeps which obviously turns the system off.
Anyway, this is the indepth information if it helps:
Games tested:
Final Fantasy X (PAL, Platinum) [tested with WD 500GB USB]
Kingdom Hearts (PAL, Platinum) [tested with PSP 4GB and WD 500GB USB]
Kingdom Hearts 2 (PAL) [tested with WD 500GB USB]
Methods tested:
NTSC Tutorial (in this thread) with USB Extreme.
The SUPER easy method in the PAL version thread (http://www.haxnetwork.net/showthread.php?t=8888).
Hardware/Software:
PS3 -> PS3 NTSC 60GB CECHA01
Firmware -> 1.50
Swap Magic -> Swap Magic 3.8 Coder
USB's -> PSP 4GB, WD 500GB
USBLoader version -> 0.1 (first method), 0.2b (2nd method)
ISO program -> USB Extreme
uLaunch -> The one supplied in the USBAdvance Tutorial File Pack.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you. :)

I've been trying to read up on that, as the same thing happens with a game of mine, and from what I can tell, if you get the Spanish(?) text and then the game goes black, you've got a game that isn't compatible with USBAdvance. You can try running one of the games here that's known to boot:
http://www.haxnetwork.net/showthread.php?t=8886
If they don't boot for you, then... I think you probably did something wrong.
I dunno. I'm having the same problems as you, now. I'm trying to get Another Century's Episode 2 (NTSC-J) to work on my US 60GB console w/ latest firmware, but it's black-screening right after the Spanish/Italian (my bad, Ifcaro) loading screen.
Anyway, I'm gonna see if I can get past this.

And a heavy sigh resounds through my heart...
Nah, seriously. This is starting to get to me. Maybe I should've checked this whole thing out before buying a Swap Magic, a 1TB hard drive, and another flash drive all for around $150.
So I'm still having that issue with Another Century's Episode 2. Just won't boot up - USBLoader picks it up, loads it, then black screen.
I thought, "Maybe I'm doing something wrong," and got Rez and tried that one out to see if my assumption was correct. After booting and rebooting the SM CD for about half an hour, the PS3 finally read it. And then I go about playing Rez: Boot up SM, Up+L2 (to USBLD 0.2b), plug in my other working flash drive, see Rez there, click on it...
And I get a static screen. All the bootup of USBLoader runs fine, but once the actual game starts, it's a static screen. I'm too lazy right now to bother searching through the threads to see if this is a common occurrence or not - which it shouldn't be, seeing as how people've confirmed that it works - but now I'm really, really frustrated.
Maybe I should just hold onto all of this and hope for the day when Ifcaro and co. update this neat lil' program to the point where it works with all games and storage media.
'Til then, I'll just weep and lament my wasted efforts. That or get another PS2, which just isn't sounding like a very good investment, right now, not after $150 already down the drain.
Anyway, if anyone's got any help on those two major issues above, that'd be great. If not, then oh well. Thanks a lot, aries2k.

imperialarmy
02-22-2009, 10:29 PM
If I'm right, Swap Magic 3.6 is Swap Magic 3 Plus, and Swap Magic 3.8 is Swap Magic Coder.
That's where the SM 3.6+ comes from. The earlier version (3.3) was just Swap Magic 3.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong; I was super confused about that, too. Almost bought the wrong SM.

02-22-2009, 11:17 PM

No, you're right. 3.8 is Swap Magic 3.8 Plus CODER. 3.6+ is just Swap Magic 3.6 Plus.
I'm regretting buying SM because I'm doing everything right and i'm using a compatible USB medium (PSP), but it still won't work, even with compatible games. Disappointing to say the least.

Are we supposed to be on a certain PS3 firmware version in order to do this whole iso/backup loading scheme? (example, homebrew needed 1.50 on psp).
Also, has this hack/exploit worked for anyone yet?
imperialarmy
02-23-2009, 03:37 AM
From all I've been told, it'll work on up to the latest firmware, 2.60. So it should work on each firmware up to that. I doubt Sony'll implement a block in a firmware update, either.
And yes, people have been able to boot up PS2 games. Me, I personally haven't, but I'm still in the process of getting it to work.
Speaking of which, since posting about my issue, I found out about that IOPRPxxx.IMG thing, and I'll try replacing the IOPRP280.IMG on my ISO with another from a confirmed working game (dunno what game it's from, but the pack I got it from is here, in case anyone wants it: http://rapidshare.com/files/85615979/IOPRPs.rar ) and see if that'll work.
Still no joy on Rez, though. Still getting the static screen. Anyone got anything on that?

Hurray! I finally managed to boot Tekken 5 through my usbdrive on my MGS4 bundled PS3! What I did was format my pendrive to FAT32, made a new folder in it's root (named SWAPMAGIC) pasted in a copy of usbloader 0.2 and renamed it to SMBOOT0. After that, I used usbutil to install tekken 5 in the root of the pendrive, put it in my ps3, powered it on, booted swap magic 3.8 and chose SMBOOT0 from there.
Works perfectly, but now I wanna be able to use HDLoader/Advance because the usb is ofcourse very slow. Shouldn't that be possible? I mean, since Final Fantasy XI recently had some issues resolved through firmware updates, shouldn't an updated version of HDAdvance be able to do the trick? Would be AWESOME...

Hello. Is the 3.6+ or 3.8 version of SM better for the job? Is 3.6+ the same as 3.6?
3.6+ supposedly has better compatibility with games than 3.8. 3.6 is the version number, the actual full name of that version is Swap Magic 3.6 Plus. (Read: 3.6 = 3.6+)
Will I need the NTSC version of SM for an NTSC machine (I am guessing yes, but double checking)?

The flip top and swap tool are ONLY meant for the PS2, so you wouldn't be able to use them on the PS3 even if you wanted to. What those tools are meant to do is allow you to access the disc drive without resetting the PS2's TOC check or whatever.
With a PS3, the only way to eject a game is by pressing the Eject button, which resets the PS3's TOC check. So there's no way to use Swap Magic with a backup disc. Hence this new thread.
...actually, there IS a way to eject the disc without the PS3 recognizing it, but that takes some time and some soldering knowledge and some ripping apart of the PS3's top, so it's not very much recommended for beginners or those who like their PS3 looking whole. You can see that thread here: http://www.haxnetwork.net/showthread.php?t=4859

So far I have only managed to get Wizardry running using this method here's a few things I've noticed that might help someone:
1. Sony branded flashdrives, external hardrives do not work to tranfer the files to the ps3 virtual memory card
2. A psp with a memory stick formated to fat always works to transfer files to the vmc
3 I tried a sandisk cruzer that initially did not work when it came formated as fat32, I had to reformat it to fat to transfer files to the vmc
4. It doesn't matter what usb port on the ps3 you use with the psp or the compatible flash drive to transfer files or to boot games
5. If you're booting games from an external hardrive then it MUST be plugged in to usb port 1 on the ps3
Now if only I could get some decent games booting!

Have you tried replacing the ioprpxxx.img or DNAS files? I've heard that fixes a lot of the issues.
************* [ - Post Merged - ] *************
Definitely try replacing the IOPRPxxx.IMG and/or DNASxxx.IMG files. I tried that with my Japanese ISO (which wasn't working before) and it worked fine this time... except that it popped up a white static-y screen, just like when I tried Rez.
Anyone got any tips on that? Since Rez SHOULD work and it got the white static screen, I'm guessing the same's happening with ACE2.

I'm sort of new to the scene, and while I was trying to run the usbld0.2, I'm having the exact same problem as this guy (Wrote this a couple of pages earlier, didn't get a proper answer)
"hi!I have a 60gb pal ps3 system and i have a two magic disc cd and dvd 3.6 magic disc!cd or dvd disc the good to progress?becouse boot up the disc and press up+l2 the screen is write :bld version 0.2
dicado a todas aquellas personas que les qusta investigar y no esperan que se lo den todo hecho scando usbd.....
se ha encontrado ningun USBD.IRX
why?not work why?please help step by step!thx sorry my bad english:D"
So anyways, I DO have a compatible USB (Sandisk cruzer micro 8gb), I DO have a compatible swapmagic (3,6+) and a lauch 60gb backwards compatible PAL-PS3, I HAVE done all (And I mean all. Formatted to fat32, properly copied the iso with the program, etc) the tutorial says (The longer one AND the 'quick and easy one'), and everything is like in the youtube-videos (Especially the 'quick and easy' -video, now that I tried it just now). There's nothing else but the SWAPMAGIC-folder with the Usbdl0.2 PAL (Renamed as SMBOOT0.ELF), and the game (In .slus -format, and the ul.cfg -file (These all formed from the ISO I converted)). I have the USB in place 1 (It's the left-most USB place in the front of the PS3, right?). Swap Magic 3.6+ DVD boots perfectly normal, I press up(On d-pad) + L1, the screen goes black and the text appears just like in the 'quick and easy way' -video, but the last sentence is "dicado a todas aquellas personas que les qusta investigar y no esperan que se lo den todo hecho scando usbd" or something like that, and that's where it stops. I can quit the Swap Magic via the PS-button and all, but the program doesn't give me the opinion to choose PAL (With X) or NTSC (With O) as the video shows. So basically the same problem as the user I was quoting has.
Does anyone know what I did wrong here?

Circle,
From the sound of everything it seems that you're on the right path. Have you tried reformating the sandisk cruzer to FAT instead of FAT32? As you reformat it to FAT choose "default allocation size" After I did this my 4gb sandisk cruzer was detected by usbadvance. I hope this helps!

thanks but i have a 40gb, would apriciate it if you guys can try and make one for the 40gb
imperialarmy
02-28-2009, 06:08 PM
The 40GB model can't play PS2 games at all, so you obviously won't be able to boot Swap Magic with it.
If there's an update down the line that lets you download the software to emulate PS2 games (that's included in the PAL 60 and old US 80 GB models), then you'll probably be able to use this. But as it is, if your system can't play PS2 games, then you can't use this, either.
Sorry to say.
EDIT:
Oh, and I know this is a drag, but I still haven't received an answer to my problem - the white-screen thingie. Anything would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Thanks, b3mike, will try. Hope it works, I'll inform it here if it does :)
EDIT. ...Aand it seems that I can only format it to NTFS, FAT32 and exFAT from Windows. Do any of these pass, or do I need a separate program to be able to format it to plain FAT, or is it possible at all? Also, it seems that the allocation unit size is 32kb currently, but I can change it. Does that make any difference, like if I choose the allocation unit size as default allocation size with the FAT32, does that make it normal FAT or something? (I will test all of those format-things I mentioned above in 24 hours nevertheless, if nobody knows what to do, but if someone has a clue, then please...)

Circle, are you running XP? If so, you can try the following:
Start-->Run
Type in "cmd", Enter
Type in "format I: /fs:fat", Enter (Replacing "I:" with your drive letter)
Type in "y", Enter
Your flash drive SHOULD then get formatted as a FAT device.
Here's an explanation of the full command, in case you're interested: http://www.ss64.com/nt/format.html

Circle,
I forgot to mention that I'm running Windows 7 so it gives me the options to format to ntfs, fat, fat32, and exfat. I'm playing on a US 60gb and so far only the fat format has worked for me. Have you tried using a PSP? Just don't give up, I'm also new to the scene and it took me two days to get everything running. I'm about to pull my hair out, the compatibility issues are terrible but at least it's better than nothing. At least I got Yakuza running. Does anyone have rumble working on their games?

Yyeep, tried that, it said the flashdrive is too big for FAT-format, but thanks anyways imperialarmy, it's good to know how to do that stuff via dos (Also tried FAT16, the same result). So from what I know now, I guess FAT32 is the right way to go??? I try to format it with default allocation size as I said earlier, and see what happens (Fingers crossed...).
(Now if I just knew what the spanish text it said when I tried to boot meant ;))
EDIT. Yes, got it working! I translated the spanish sentence with an online-dictionary, and it said "could not find usbld.irx" or something like that. So I googled it and found a forum in which someone asked this same question I had, and the answer was that I needed to use usbld0.2b, not usbld0.2, if I wanted to avoid that problem. And also to create a virtual memory card for ps2 to slot 1, which I actually already had unintentionally. So anyways, now it boots the program, I can run the isos, though the Iso I had seems to be faulty, I get this black screen after loading and nothing else, but I'll try other ones.
Thanks to everyone who helped :)

You MIGHT be able to do that, but you'd probably have to use some version of HDLoader instead. It might be possible to use the "PS2 System Settings" download in some way - y'know, the download that lets you partition a part of your drive for PS2 games that require a HDD (namely FFXI) - to partition off a larger chunk of internal hard drive space that you could then throw gamesaves onto using HDLoader.
Might try that, actually, if no one else has already.
And one other question: is it theoretically possible to develop USBAdvance beyond the compatibility range of USBExtreme? Since the two are basically the same, I figure that the one thing USBAdvance has got over USBExtreme is the ability to be updated and whatnot. Already with ver. 0.2b you don't need the usbd.irx or whatever files. Would it be possible to add onto that ver. 0.2b until you get compatibility comparable to, say... HDLoader?

Well, what games are you trying to play? The USBAdvance compatibility rate is dismally low, meaning you'll only be able to play, say... 5-10% or so of all PS2 games. That's just a rough estimate from me, considering all the PS2 games out there and the very... very small games that are confirmed as compatible.
Anyway, what games are you trying out?

Green text = functioning
Red = not functioning
Yellow = notes
It's in Spanish, but you should be able to get the gist of it.

Hitman and Nascar should work. How long did you wait for the game to fully load? (For reference, it takes... roughly 30-45 seconds for me to boot up Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Capcom Vs. SNK 2, and Zone of the Enders 2.)

Theres a difference between MB/s (Megabytes/sec) and Mb (Megabits/sec) I believe that USB 1.1 is 11Mb/s which equates to around 1.2~1.3MB/s I think, not too sure though.

A few questions though: :hmmmm:
1. How do you load more then one game to your storage device for the USB loader? I tried to make three different folders to install three different games, but USB loader said no games were present. Games use the same file names, so different games can't all be in the root of the drive.
2. I've tried a few games and gotten them to work. Although, sometimes it takes a few retries before it works. But has anyone gotten Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria to run? Tried a few times now and it does seem to want to load up. I mean do some games work while others will not?

Hi, everybody!
I'm new here and I've been through this whole thread, and so far, I've just become very confused. There seems to be a fair amount of conflicting information throughout, and it's hard to tell what suggestions are the most current or accurate.
I have an NTSC PS3 CECHA, Firmware 2.60
I am attempting to run a PAL PS2 ISO from an actual sealed copy of the game I got on eBay.
I'm also using SM 3.6+
I started with the file pack at the beginning of the thread and followed the instructions exactly, except that disc copy utility wouldn't see my flash drive, so I had to run ul_format and ul_install from the command prompt. I've repeated the whole tutorial 3 times, just in case. I've also tried the USBloader 2.0b simple method from the PAL thread. In either case, I get to the same point. USB Loader loads and sees the game on the pendrive. I start it, the screen goes black, and the access light on the pen drive flickers for a while. Then, the light stops filckering and the screen stays black. I've checked the game (Forbidden Siren 2) and it's listed as compatible on the USBExtreme list, as well as on PS3s with PS2 BC. Can anyone help me?

1.) You don't need to make separate folders for each game. Write every game to the root of your flash drive. There's a small file (.ulg or something) that keeps track of all the games in that drive. You can use USBUtil to access that file and edit/erase whichever games you want.
2.) USBAdvance has a fairly low compatibility rate compared to other boot methods on the original PS2. You should check out Ifcaro's ISO compatibility list to see if VP2 works. If it doesn't, you might want to try replacing the IOPRPxxx.IMG file(s) in the ISO and rebuild it. If that doesn't work, then you're more or less out of luck.
3.) No.
That is interesting. As everyone knows, the PS2 had USB ports as well. Does anyone know if those were 1.1 speeds? If so, that might be the reason why PS3 switches to from 2.0 to 1.1 usb in PS2 mode.
Yeah, the PS2 had 1.1 ports. Some people thought that the new slim models would put 2.0 ports on them, but that wasn't the case.
USB Loader loads and sees the game on the pendrive. I start it, the screen goes black, and the access light on the pen drive flickers for a while. How long did you wait for it to completely boot up?
The same issue plagues me when I try Rez (though I hardly try anymore, since my SM CD-ROM doesn't want to be read by the PS3, apparently) - I'll get to a black screen, and nothing'll happen. Something similar happens when I try to play Resident Evil: Outbreak 2 - the very first loading screen suddenly stops reading data from my external drive and no data is loaded at all, and the game simply doesn't advance.
I'm not sure how to get past either of those issues, but I suppose one thing you can do is recopy your ISO to make sure it's not due to a bad disc or anything.

Check Ifcaro's ISO Loader Compatibility List. It should have a fairly decent list of games that'll work; if yours are listed as non-working, then they just won't work.

Yeah, Ifcaro's ISO list is on this site. You can find it easily by searching or so. I'm just... y'know. Lazy n' all. It's in the Hacks/Exploits section, in case you're interested.
As far as replacing the IOPRP, you'll also find in that Ifcaro list, on the bottom of the first post, a program that allows you to edit your ISOs in real-time. Download it. (I believe It's called DKZ Studio.)
You'll also need an IOPRPxxx.IMG file from a game that is known to work with USBAdvance. Here's a pack for you, in case you're interested: http://rapidshare.com/files/85615979/IOPRPs.rar
What you do is open up your ISO in DKZ Studio, replace any IOPRPxxx.IMG (the xxx = numbers) with the same IOPRPxxx.IMGs from that pack, and save the ISO. (So if you have an IOPRP310.IMG, then replace it with another IOPRP310.IMG.)
If your game has online play, then you might want to replace the DNAS file, too, but I don't know much about that. Anyway, those are very truncated steps. If you want a more in-depth explanation, feel free to let me know.

Can anyone help me?
i have the same problem with most games but i am using swap magic 3.8 coder and a psp slim to load the games.

Ifcaro (or anyone else in the know), when I try moving your USBLD 0.2b gamesave over to my internal memory card, I get one of those "An error occured. 800xxxx" messages. Does this have to do with a region issue? Or is there something wrong with the save file? Or something wrong with my PS3? I created a new virtual memory card, thinking that was the issue, but things still didn't work. Any hints?

Shrek, you'll need the DVD to boot DVD PS2 games and the CD to boot CD PS2 games.
Ghost, Swap Magic might not be compatible with your USB drive. You'll have to try using another USB drive to boot up either USBAdvance or uLaunch. (If you want compatibility, I think the SanDisk Cruzer Micro flash drives can be read by SM. Try using a cheap 1 or 2GB stick to boot up USBAdvance, and then plug in your main USB drive.)

Does anyone know if any of the $cheap$ 1 or 2gb flash drives from newegg work with SM?
Also, wheres the cheapest place online to buy SM for NTSC (USA)? Are "vpgames" or "go cyber shop" or "estarland" legit to buy from?
Thanks for the help!

Well, I bought my SM from vpgames, and it was almost completely painless. I jammed my toe while it was shipping, you see, so I was in a bit of pain for about a few hours there.
But yeah, vpgames was pretty good to me.
As far as the flash drives go, though, you might want to check here: http://www.haxnetwork.net/showthread.php?t=8920
The list is incomplete, but see if you can match your flash drive model against that list. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all Kingston drives aren't readable by SM, for whatever reason. Which is a shame, since Kingston is such a good and reliable company, too. But anyway.
You might want to check out the Sandisk Cruzer Micro flash drives, as I hear all sizes are supported by SM.
dookie11
04-06-2009, 02:11 PM
thanks. just kinda sucks that the sandisk cruzers tend to be a bit more pricey than others do.
Also, do you know if the SM that vpgames sells is the USA version or PAL? Cuz the picture here, http://vpgames.com/p-773-ps2-swap-magic-plus-import-game-enabler-2-disc-set-v36.aspx is a PAL version disc set.
I need one that works for NTSC(USA) cecha model.

So, i've been taking my time waiting for a 60gb PS3 off of craigslist, and i picked it up tonight. My plan is to use this as a HD movie/HD TV show player, and SNES / NES emulator.
I've looked through the entire thread (and other places), and I see someone posed a question once but I never found an answer if you are able to make a PS2 ISO of SNES-Station (is there another PS2 super nintendo emu?) and load that and play roms.
I know ps2 backups will play using the method described in this thread, but can you run ps2 homebrew (like EMU's) as well? I didn't even own a PS2 so i'd be starting from scratch on that front to create the ISO so that SwapMagic/USBAdvance could even load it...
The Gamebase site that all the forum posts lists having instructions is no longer around...I finally found a link, so i downloaded Version 0_2_3 20040124 of SNES-Station...is this even close to a recent copy?
Any info would be helpful, I tried looking for ~2 hours total today and haven't been able to find anything concrete.

you could put Psxloader and the SNES emu together and make a disc image but I´m not sure if it would work with usbloader.
There´s no need for that though. the same way you use SM to boot usbloader, can be used to boot other ps2 homebrew off of usb.

It works with emus (PGEN and SNES-Station). Lurk a little more for the links to the tutorial. I just got it working this afternoon when I received my Swap Magic 3.6 disc set from estarland. Make sure you use the DVD version, because the CD version just gave me a black screen.
My system configuration is as follows:
-CECHA ps3 fw 2.60
-SM 3.6 DVD
-PSP as mass storage
Also, just to letcha know, you should learn to post in other threads though, because they're gonna get on your arse for hijacking this thread.

Hey all,
Can someone provide some help to me please?
I've done everything according to instructions in the tutorial, and when I get to USBLoader and pick my game (megaman x7, or puzzle quest : challenge of the warlords) and load either one, the screen turns black with those white messages in spanish (encontrado, etc etc), and then the screen blinks, and I get a black and white fuzzy screen like it's a PAL game. I believe both games are NTSC-U versions, so what am I doing wrong? or are they just bad games to use?
This is what I'm using: 60gb CECHA NTSC system; SM 3.6 DVD-disc (the CD-disc doesnt do anything except get to a black screen when I hit "Play Playstation 2 disc" at the xmb); my psp as my mass device for both transferring the files, and the psp as a HDD for the games. Also, when I copied the games over onto the root of the psp, I used USBUtil and selected "AUTO" for media type.
Thanks for your help. Right now, I'll go try mvc2 and other games.
************* [ - Post Merged - ] *************
K, mvc2 doesnt work either. What am I doing wrong here? I keep getting the B&W fuzzy PAL-ish screen once I select my game from USBLoader.
Is it cuz I'm using the SM DVD instead of the CD? The CD doesnt even run on the ps3. Or am I supposed to be waiting a while for the screen to load up and say "Playstation 2"?
Should I not be using a psp as my hdd for the games?
Oh, a note. When I select usbld from the ulaunch screen, it'll blink the screen, and then black and white fuzzy "IFCARO" screen. I can hit start, and it'll skip to the USBLoader screen, which will then blink for a while before letting me select my games.
Thanks for the help!

Hey guys has there been any movement with this yet?? I ordered Swap Magic 3.8 to test it out but my friend is telling me some PS2 games just don't work and USB 1.1 speeds are being used. Has anyone been able to find out how to use 2.0 speeds/boot isos from PS2 internal HDD, and is there a compatibility list of games tried and worked, I just want to able to play some good old games like FF-X and Persona 3 & 4. My PS2's mobo has fried and I want to play some old PS2 games. Someone has hacked the remote play function of the PSP, so does this mean that it may be possible to stream games from an HDD in a computer as this is probably still faster than USB 1.1.

yes, SM has a region. I´m not familar with Jpn consoles but you are going to need one from your region. I don´t think NTSC US discs work on a Jpn console, Pal definately doesn´t.
by the way,the link you put is for NTSC US, not Pal.

I posted this in the suggestions area more so for the powers that be, I thought to post here for members like myself can read it as well.
Well it's official, I'm disgusted. I have taken interest in loading ps2 iso on my us60gb ps3. However I found the tut incomplete and the forum has more questions than answers. I would like to believe I'm fairly capable, iv modded 360's ps2's both slim and fat and not to shabby with the home PC. But I found this mod most frustrating. The few tut's and video's I did find are not detailed enough, for example it tells you to download a folder but doesn't list what should be in the folder..or what different symptoms mean.
To make matters worse iv found substantial contradictive info throughout the forum. So after reading through all 19 pages of one forum and 22 of another and not having my questions answered. Or finding a solution to my problem I calmly shook my head and decided a little constructive criticism is due.
Create a tut that not only tells you to download x, y and z but what should be in them and where they go. There are 3 different ways to extract to a folder. Explain what it should look like when its done. What's wrong if you get this error or this happens. Finally I think I speak for all when I say since the prep on the PC is crucial, I think screen shots of file prep on the PC is needed more than vid's on it working on a ps3. As the old saying goes not all those that can do can teach.
I'd like to take a brief moment and commend those who make the effort in keeping the site running, I can't imagine the work load. Thanx for giving gamers like myself the medium, im just dissapointed in the members.

I wasnt really expecting the problem to be solved as i was looking for a better, deeper understanding. As I said there seems to be a few different methods and all seem to be succesful for some and un-succesful for others. The problem I'm having is the same that I have seen others post with no resolve so my apologies for my pessimistic outlook.
I followed the tut given by Pirate (http://www.haxnetwork.net/showthread.php?t=8791) which worked up until booting a game and I received a black screen. The games attempted were ICO,Battelfield II and Colusus. After trying different usb thumb drives with the same result I moved on to the second method. Which Sounds or seems better because it gives way to using one usb device to boot and another to load ISO's. However I got the USBD.IRX error message, advising me to get one from an PS2 game and place it in MC0:B?DATA-SYSTEM. Unfortunantly the more I read to solve the problem the more confusing it became as to if anyone has had consistent success, what method was most stable, which files where best and so on..

Lol sorry about that,
I used the SUPER EASY method to run the USB LOADER. The video helped me.
I used the USB Extreme to copy the games to my hard drive, depending on the game some had 5 files or 2 or 3 files, but all of them had a file that was named ul.cfg (Microsoft Office Outlook Configuration File (.cfg)) about 64 kb big. Each game made the same file. So if i put all the games in the usbhd that file gets replaced each time so i have 5 different games but only one of those file. But usb loader will only read one game because it only sees that one file. When put the games in folders with there own ul.cfg file the usb loader doesnt see any games at all. So my ? is how do i put multipule games on the usbhd? S the USB LOADER can read them.
gixermann
05-14-2009, 07:33 PM
As far as I can tell since I did play around with that ul.cfg file it acts as a index file for the USB Loader. If you open notepad(txt) then choose file, open and navigate to where ever your ul.cfg file is, you'll note the game title, followed by spaces then the first ISO in the set of ISO's for a game..Here ill copy and paste..
Shadow Of The Colosuss ul.SCUS_974.72 Battlefield 2 ul.SLUS_210.26
So in theory place your ISO's on you USBHDD and make sure your ul.cfg has them listed as above. I advise taking special care to maintain the proper spacing and symbols. At best copy and paste the original into a new text file, then simply change your numbers and titles maintaining the original structure..Of course the sure fire way is to take the time and re-rip them to the USBHDD and allow USBExtreme to do it for you, just a thought
The problem I have is when I select a title I get a black screen, I eventually end up hitting the PS button and shut it down or restarting..

I tried both methods on the first post of this thread and I created iso with USBUtil software. I see no error messages on the screen, so I don't know what is going on... I think access light on the USB drive should've been flashing, but it will stop while PS3 is loading iso.
Does anybody know the solution for this?
The iso that I used is(are) on:

Hi,
Your games may not be working, because they're not on the compatibilty list. Have you tried swapping out the IOPRP files? If it has online play, you can try DNAS swap also. Look it up on google for your specific games. I havent played with mine in a while, since I couldnt get Killzone working. So far I've been able to play like 5 games though, so I can confirm that its working.
Lemme know if you need any more help
Good luck :)

After making two posts about the same thing, you still haven't told us your problem...
How do you expect those who make tutorials to fix them if they don't know thhttp://www.haxnetwork.net/ps3/icons/icon6.gif errors or problems?
So after two days and more question posted than answers I guess I kinda made my point. http://www.haxnetwork.net/ps3/icons/icon6.gif Perhaps this simpler question can be answered. When I try the second old long method, I am unable browse the thumb drive to copy the BADATA files. The tut says this means its incompatible. My question is. I have attempted this with three different thumb drives. The new easy method works up until the point of USB Advance, but using the same drive the older longer method does not allow me to browse the thumb drive..So is it the thumb drive or what? How can I verify my model or if I have the PS2 hardware.

Are there specific flash drives that'll work with the loader? I've already tried 4 different ones and none work! Now I'll have to return them and pay the damned restocking fee...
PLease reply...

Forgive me but I didn't bother to read all the posts just to find the answer to my question: Does this also work with PSX to PS3?

No, this doesn´t work with psx games.
it also doesn´t work with Gameshark discs. SM is needed.
list of compatible usb devices.

Someone was asking about the game Shadow of colossus, that doesn´t work with usbloader.
If a game is on the compatibilty list but is not working
1. try a different region game if a region isn´t specified on the list
2. replace the IORP or DNAS file. 90% of games that have DNAS, don´t work even with a swap.
3. you have a bad game image, so rerip the game from disc or whatever.

As for loading the .iso onto the external HDD, can it be done without Windows? I have Mac OS X and YDL Linux at my disposal...

Copy and paste can be done in any OS, even DOS and O/S2

I'm pretty sure he's referring to making the ISO. You can find many tutorials online on how to do this.

I'm referring to the portion of the tutorial that refers to extracting the files from the .iso to your external FAT32 formatted drive. I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that this portion is significant due to FAT32's 4GB file size limit, while a DVD image can exceed that size. The tutorial states a user may already have a disc image, but will still need to mount it and go through a special procedure to properly move it to external storage. In other words, you don't copy and paste the .iso
