Where would you guys recommend buying the swap magic from (preferrably v3.8)? I've looked at a lot of stores, but only found one that sold the 3.8, but I found plenty that sold the 3.6. Is there that big of a difference?

No, you won't be using Swap Magic directly, so the cheats (in CODER/3.8) probably won't work. Get 3.6, it works in the same way.

gixermann, I feel your pain. I have the exact same problem that you have. After following the easy method, I boot the game up to view a beautiful black screen. Then I must press the guide button to go to the dashboard. I do not see this as being a USB problem at all. The ps3 loads the loader, and shows the game when viewing the loader. With another drive that I own, the ps3 will not do either. I've used an old ipod, and 2 different staples drive, and they all show the black screen. I wish somebody would just help. I wasted 30 dollars on these two discs. It seems you haven't posted anything in a while. If you have any progress, please respond.
Edit: As I continue to backtrack through this thread, I see countless people saying they get the black screen. Will no single person address this issue at all? Can the person who wrote this guide please tell us if he had similar problems with game? So far I've tried God Hand and Persona 4. None of them worked. And, if half of the ps2 library doesn't work, and I just happen to be wanting to play quality games that are in that category, I'm going pissed. I didn't purchase this to play guitar hero. I also see this patching stuff with DNS files or whatnot. PLEASE! If such patching is necessary, state it in the guide! Throughout these posts, I'm just attaining fragments of information about such patching. Not enough to actually understand what to do in simple, effective way. Please don't don't say "find it in the forum", or something along those lines. Have you seen the help section? Unanswered, Unanswered, Unanswered, Unanswered, Unanswered...

Hi,
I asked this question on the chat channel but the more I thought about the answer I got the more confused I became.
Why does the swap magic CD for 3.6 not load up when CD based games work just fine? The whole purpose for me doing this is so I can play some import ps2 games without having to find out if my ps2 still works (which actually, I just found out it doesn't). These import games that I own are in CD format, not DVD and for obvious reasons when I load up the DVD swap magic, the loader doesn't see the game.
I was told in the chat channel that the PS3 does not play CD games, which isn't 100% true since it does play PS1 games and those are all CDs. Does it just not play PS2 CD games or what?
Further explanation of this would help me understand why I need to get a new PS2 (again).
Thanks, for any and all help.
EDIT: Nevermind, I figured out what I was doing wrong with the DVD version and it allows me to use the CD games.

The external usbd.irx is just to try different compatibilty with usb devices. itīs still a ps2 1.1 usb driver.
the original usb drivers from uLaunch.elf donīt work on the ps3, so I recompiled the .elf with working ps2 drivers but theyīre still 1.1 ps2 usb drivers.
I wish they were 2.0 usb drivers because that would make this a good way of booting ps2 backups but unfortunately they they donīt exist. :(

your kidding, right? this thread has 52 pages with people that are using this and itīs also a tutorial. yes itīs possible, if you have the required things.
I know itīs your 1st post so donīt take my comment the wrong way but it doesnīt get any more real than this.
When in doubt, try it yourself to see if itīs real or not.

I have a PAL ps3 60gb and i'm trying to play FF12. I followed the easy method and was able to see the intro (altough it got stuck), but when i click new game the game freezes. The game is running from a psp memcard in a usb cardreader (lost the psp), and the program from a Sandisc Cruzer Micro 4gb.
The old method gives me a usbd.irx error which i cannot solve. I tried to make the iso smaller (read something about removing FMV's) to make it fit on the usb, but this seems impossible for FF12. So my question is: do i have to buy an bigger Cruzer, or will this provide the same problem?

So I recently *obtained* an .iso file from a certain website, yet when I put it on the root of my external HDD (WD My Book 500GB, FAT32), USB Loader says I currently have no games on the HDD. I'm using a 60GB CECHA PS3, and Swap Magic Version 3.6, by the way.
Do I have to do anything special to the .iso itself? Or did I just place it in the wrong spot?
Thanks in advance.

1st make sure your hdd is in FAT32.
Iomega 320gb hdd is reported as not working with SM but is working with usbloader. So even though you canīt use it to start with SM, you might be able to use it with usbloader. SM is very picky with usb devices but you only need to find one that does work for boot up and then you can swap usb devices, once usbloader has booted up.
Compatible with SwapMagic
Sandisc cruzer, Intuix E3 pen drives and some Adata pens work. Maxell8gb and Readyboost 8gb by Emtec work. PSP of course. Western digital My Passport and Memorex ultratd hdds work. Creative Zenstone 2gb is also reported as a working usb device.

This is a tutorial on how to boot Playstation 2 ISO's on the PS3 via external HDD. The original founder of this method was ifcaro, this tutorial is a step-by-step method on how to get PS2 ISO's to run on your PS3. Original thread can be viewed here (http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=8750). PS3Hax takes no responsibility of damage caused to your PS3 through this method, and all information here is for informational/educational purposes only.
How to play PS2 ISO's on PS3 via USBAdvance (aka USBLD)
YouTube - PS2 backups playing on PS3 via HDD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1X3aAbCBDOo)
(Video by idone)
What you need:
Swap Magic 3.6+/3.8(Purchase here (http://www.swapmagic3.com/Swap_Magic_Where_To_Buy.asp)or here (http://www.google.com/products?q=swap%20magic&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wf)) (Must be actual copy, burned copies do NOT work).
Launch PS3 (20/60gb) - NTSC/Japanese (Must have emotion engine, only launch PS3's had this).
Flash Drive (PSP in USB MODE will also work).
Here is the EASY and suggested method:
Here is the SUPER EASY method to run USB Loader.
1. Create a folder on a compatible USB Device (ie: PSP) called SWAPMAGIC.
2. Place the USBLD_0.2b.elf file (DOWNLOAD HERE: http://www.haxnetwork.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=247) in this folder and rename it SMBOOT0.elf
3. If you are using the same drive to boot the game from place it in the root of the drive.
4. Load Swap Magic with the USB Device in the FIRST USB port.
5. Press UP and L1 and USB Loader should boot.
6. Press X for a PAL console or O for a NTSC console
7. Wait for USB Loader to boot and select your game.
jBDgDpyqh-E
Long, Old method, use if you have issues with easy one.
If you are a Japenesee PS3 user you need to rename the folder BADATA-SYSTEM to BIDATA-SYSTEM -This guide will assume you are a USA user and call the folder "BADATA-SYSTEM" in the download pack.
Download the USBAdvance Tutorial File Pack (http://www.ps3hax.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=240).
Extract the contents of the folder USBADVANCE to the root of your flash drive/PSP.
Boot up SWAPMAGIC and once loaded into the menu screen, people who are using swapmagic v3.6 press UP (on D-Pad)+L2 on your PS3 controller to browse through your flash drive. People that are using Swapmagic v3.8 go to the SMBOOT menu and select uLaunch from there. In the pack provided uLaunch is SMBOOT1. Go to configure, select any button you want (I usually use X or O), go to MISC and select FILEBROWSER binding it to the selected button, go down and hit ok. Now go to the browser. (Props to Crono (http://www.ps3hax.net/member.php?u=38818) for telling us how to use v3.8 Swapmagic). If you are unable to view your flash drive, then it is not compatible (use another one).
Copy the BADATA-SYSTEM folder and USBLD_01.ELF file to your Virtual Memory Card (on PS3).
Go inside BADATA-SYSTEM folder and cut/move the Pictures and SWAPMAGIC folder to ROOT the Virtual Memory Card.
Remove your FLASH DRIVE, press the (PS) button and quit the game and go back to XMB and launch swap magic.
At this point you should move the Playstation 2 ISO's of your choice to your external HDD/flash drive. You need to have them properly formmated and copied over via USBExtreme or USBUtil (is included in file you downloaded above). If you are not sure how to do this, there is a quick tutorial that guides you through the process. Make sure your USB/Flash drive is plugged into your PS3.
Once booted, browse and launch USBLD_01.ELF
And there you have it, if you followed this tutorial properly you should see the Playstation 2 ISO's there and just click and launch
How to copy PS2 ISO's to a external USB/flash drive
Method 1
Download the USBAdvance Tutorial File Pack (http://www.ps3hax.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=240). (Ignore if you downloaded it in last tutorial), and extract the folder USB EXtreme to you desktop.
Plug in your USB HDD (or Flash drive)
Put a PS2 game into your disc drive (if the game is already on your computer you can mount it with Alcohol 120 (http://www.download.com/Alcohol-120-/3000-2646_4-10158124.html))
Open up the USB EXTREME tool on your compute.
Select your Disc Drive the PS2 game is in, Media type (most are DVD's) and your USB/Flash drive.
Now you can name the game and hit start.
There you have it a properly copied game to your HDD, just pop it in your PS3 and follow step 8 from above.
Method 2 (Easier Method)
Download USButil located here (http://www.ps3hax.net/downloads.php?do=file&id=242).
Format your external drive/usb drive to FAT/FAT16/FAT32 format.
In the download pack you downloaded there should be a folder called USBUtil, go inside that and run the EXE.
Go to FILE and click on "OPEN ISO to create game".
Search and click on your PS2 backup, and click CREATE.
The program will now copy the ISO over to your pendrive (it takes some time).
F.A.Q
Q: Does this work on my 80gb PAL/NTSC/JAP System?
A: Yes, use the latest USBLD 0.2b.
Q: Does this work on my 40gb PAL/NTSC/JAP System? And will it ever?
A: No. No. No. No. No. No method has been released yet for these systems and unsure when in future.
Q: Does this work on PAL PS3's?
A: Yes read: http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=8861
Q: But my PS3 is backwards compatible, why doesn't this work?
A: It does not work with SOFTWARE EMULATION (which is what your PS3 most likely has). If its not a "launch unit" it will NOT WORK RIGHT NOW.
Q: How do I know if my unit is a LAUNCH UNIT?
A: Check model number on back of PS3, if it is a launch unit it will be one of the follow: CECHA, CECHB, CECHC, CECHD
Q: Does this work on NTSC PS3's?
A: Yes - launch units only.
Q: What PS3's can use this method of PS3's?
A: Basically USA and Japenese Launch Consoles (20/60gb) that contain the Emotion Engine (PS3 Models CECHA, CECHB, CECHC, CECHD)
Q: Will it work on a PS3 with no Emotion Engine?
A: No not yet.
Q: Does this boot from PS3 internal HDD?
A: No you need a external.
Q: What version of SWAP MAGIC do I need?
A: 3.6+ or 3.8
Q: Where can I buy Swap Magic?
A: Here (http://www.swapmagic3.com/Swap_Magic_Where_To_Buy.asp)and here (http://www.google.com/products?q=swap%20magic&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wf).
Q: Swap Magic cant see my USB for somereason
A: It is probably not compatible, buy another one.

Hey guys, I actually have the black labeled Swap Magic Coder 3.8 DVD and WD Book 700 GB (FAT32 format), and the DVD disc runs smoothly, but when I tried to go to SMBOOT-> SMBOOT0 and SMBOOT1, it says "Launching from SMBOOT program from MemoryCard or USB Drive" and it stays there , and nothing really happens. I am not sure why it wouldn't go to the next section and it remains there... (yes I did plug in USB device into the first slot, and put the USBAdvance folder into the root folder .... technically I also moved the folders and files inside USBAdvance outside to the root folder and it still does the same thing)
Is there a way you guys could give me an advice please? ><;;

Hi. I've recently attempted both the easy and old method and failed at both. With the easy method, I tried 2 games: Xenosaga III and Initial D. The first game booted but froze at a black screen shortly after displaying the developer logos. The second game just loaded up a black screen. According to http://www.elotrolado.net/hilo_Lista...=2#p1707418834 both games should be compatible. I've also tried using ver. 0.3 with and without modhook. Am I doing something wrong? Any help is appreciated.
I've also tried the old method as well but got stuck after copying the files onto the root of the virtual stick (using USBLD_0.2b.elf since my system doesn't have the emotion engine). Once that was done, swapmagic refused to load. It would display the PS2 logo and return to PS3 XMB. I would have to delete the files from the virtual memory stick before it would load again. Did I screw this up too?
I have the 80GB ps3 with software emulation. I'm using the PSP to load USB loader and a 4GB kingston datatraveler to load my games. Once again, any feedback is appreciated.

In a different vain, has anyone identified the chips responsible for usb functions on the ps3? A comparison of standard usb 1.0 ps3/ps2 and pc drivers may lead to a breakthrough in the development of a ps3 usb 2.0 driver.

Yes you can. I boot mine and run KOF maximum impact on it. Mine is PAL 60G. You're so wrong.

F.A.Q
Q: Does this work on my 80gb PAL/NTSC/JAP System?
A: Yes, use the latest USBLD 0.2b.
Q: But my PS3 is backwards compatible, why doesn't this work?
A: It does not work with SOFTWARE EMULATION (which is what your PS3 most likely has). If its not a "launch unit" it will NOT WORK RIGHT NOW.
i am a bit confused.. i've got a 80gig PAL unit, but it is not backwards compatible.. after a quick search on wikipedia, no PAL unit (with 80gig) has it.. so will it run, or not? can someone help me please?

Yes unfortunately that was a stupid error,that wasn't fixed,to clarify,Pal 80GB PS3's cannot play PS2 games,so this method will no work.

umm, I can run usbloader and ps2 homebrew on my Pal ps3 also. what Iīm saying is that you canīt BOOT elfs off of the VMCīs of the ps3.
Are you booting the usbloader elf(or any elf)off of a vmc? That would be news to me because Iīve had many confirmations that elfs donīt boot from the vmc on ps3īs with no EE chip.

what is VMC - virtual memory card?? My PS3 is PAL 60G which doesn't have EE built in. But instead it has GS built in. Therefore it is Backward Compatibility with PS2. PAL PS3 doesn't need to installed elf file from internal memory card. But instead it is much simpler just stick it all into one usb device. And it will boot happily ever after. Yes you are right it might not work with VMC boot but i never tried it. Don't want to try lol because it is not going to make a different or boot faster if you load ELF from VMC. Games will still be stuttering at cut scenes.:musicus:

Yes you heard me right, GT4 is worked. I spent 4hrs ripping it from DVD. And finally i got it to work.. Ripped it as DVD5 Because the Original is DVD9 which will not compatible with either SWAPMAGIC disc or USBloader. BUt if you Rip it as DVD 5 then thing changed. :) my DVD5 version is 4.31GB. i've tried 4.29GB but didnt work but 4.31 worked perfectly. Though you must skip the intro movie else it will hang. Once it is skipped you will be able to play the game fully. Drop me an email i'll give you the instruction on how to do it and may be giving you the tools to do it as well. Ok, this is an easy question to answer, first of all, I may have to ask you back a question, What is the difference between JAP game to US game? since both are NTSC?
Now I will answer, JAP game is NTSC but also US game. The difference is they have different REGIONAL CODE locked. Since PS2 DVD has region code 1,2,3,4...10 or what ever. So is the game, SWAP MAGIC is act as a game disc, in order for you to play Different region code games, you will have to bypassing the regional lock at the DACD data region of the original DVD. So, the difference is Regional Code of each version, JAP, USA, PAL version are all unique. Don't ask me why, Ask SONY lol. Its a marketing scheme to prevent grayscale

Here is a very up to date and the most exhaustive compatibility list I found for ps2 games on hdd by IDE or USB, run by the developper of WHIIP:
http://list.sksapps.com/
What's very practical with this list is that anyone can submit a test result to the admin, so it's like having a common database accessible for everyone.
BTW compared to other lists in spanish mentionned earlier in this thread, this list is the only one specifying Metal Gear Solid 3 Existence (disc 3 of limited edition) as working with USB.
However when I load it with in Usbloader 0.3 RC1, the screen just stays black even if I wait for more than 5 min, and my hdd shows no sign of reading activity. Any idea on this problem ?

Thanks but I think they tested those games on PS2's (it doesn't say or i missed it). May be that makes a difference. But I wouldn't really know if it does since I am totally a noob. also, how do they know if the iso is dvd5 or dvd9 (it shows on the list).

You need a Swap Magic disc that runs on your PS3. The region of the games you wish to load is of no importance. So long as the ISO is in no way damaged, the origin is of no importance either, because it is identical to any rip you could make using an original disc. I am unsure as to whether your console is compatible. You don`t normally have to mess around with the image files, unless you wish to patch them (atad.irx, ioprp.img, dnas.img). Chances are you will not have to or that you will be able to do it without much difficulty using specialised tools. The compatibility of Japanese games? Hmm, I`ve been playing Japanese games all summer and I`d say there`s no real pattern. 50-50 to be honest.

Acording to the first post it should work on your ps3. The post says that it works on the 60GB CECHC model.
As far as the ISO loader there is no such thing, its one of the many fakes. There will be no ISO loader until the ps3 is hacked, and that's a far off time.

You can try repacking it, and replace the .IMG file of the same name from different games. Then rebuild it. This method is not guaranteed to work but worth a try. I got a few games to work this way but even it doesn't hang at the start, it will eventually hang during the game play :D... So there is no other yet, may be have to wait until Ifcaro release a newer more compatible version. Version 0.3RC1 is worst than 0.2b so don't bother trying :D

I haven't been around in quite a long time, but I recently began replaying all my old PS2 games again, and that made me miss my imports quite a lot. (Still don't have the dough to waste on a PS2, used or otherwise.) Has there been any recent updates to this? I left the scene around... the time Ifcaro released the 0.2b version of USBAdvance. Any updates would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot, all.

Well it seems to me that o.2b is the most compatible/stable version to use. The best programs now to get a bunch of the games working now is a combination of USBUtil 2.0 with the DNAS pack and the new PS2Load injector by Iseko. I have got quite a few games to run that were not working before to load and play now. I have tested about 160 games and 116 of them will play.

What SWAPMAGIC version are u using? Did you patch the game using USButil2.0? DNAS and IOPRP.
Capcom Vs SNK2 works and i tested it myself. The method of using USBloader2.0 will works with firmware 3.00 also.
GOW - Incompatible.

No problem. I had already tested alot of them awhile back. The image patching used to be a hassle but with USBUtil 2.0 itīs quick and easy so I started testing some more.
You guys have a nice setup with that list.
I like the fact that you can put which version ps3 the game was tested with. I think there can be differences between models with the EE chip and without it. Also I think most of the compatibilty lists are mainly for USB advance. this one we know is strictly for usbloader and the ps3.
I see youīve been doing some more testing yourself. Thanks for testing grim grimoire. It saves me the trouble of retesting it with PS2Load.
Ya ,Ps2load increases the compatibilty with alot of games.:)
If anyone is interested you can grab Isekos Ps2Load Injector at psx-scene. Alot of games that wouldnīt boot now run with this method. PS2load has to be inserted before you patch any of the dnas/IOPRP files.
Iīve heard people say that you canīt play many games with this method. I would like to prove that there are hundreds of games now compatible. I would like to at least hit the 300 mark. Weīre almost at the 150 halfway mark.
Unfortunately Iīm only going to be able to test a few more games. I wonīt have acces to my Ps3 or PC during October but when I get back, Iīll continue testing,
Is this method work really slow for everybody else? I got it to work, but it's soooooo slow.
The problem is the usb 1.1 speed. Not all games are slow and thatīs mainly the videos because gameplay runs OK.
Thereīs not much than can be done about the usb 1.1 speed but thereīs new interest in this app. other ways of improving speed are being looked into.

Is it the games im using that suck, did i follow the tutorial poorly, is it time to upgrade to a new version, or is it that it just doesnt support the games im trying and my luck sucks?
Thanks in advance, and sorry for the annoyance >.>

Make sure you are loading the games onto your hard drive thru a program called USBUtil 2.0. It seems to have the best compatibility rate for copying them properly. It will also patch the games IOPR or DNAS in order for them to work properly. I personally patch all the games that I have tested.

dunno if this has been posted yet or not but.....
MotorStorm Arctic Edge is WORKING!!!!!!!
it is VERY slow when u first start but this is because of the music, take ur time, keep calm and go into the settings and turn the music off..... it WILL take u some time, took me nearly 10 minutes cos it was SOOOOOOOOOO slow. once i turned the music off, let it save, and then "reset" the console, even tho the videos were jumpy the game plays fine, seen a couple of bugs but i cant be sure if they would be there on the original.
and so everyone knows i'm running a PAL launch 60gb ps3 on the highest firmware. i used USBExtreme to create the files and i am using a Sandisk Cruser Micro 8gb to play off. i've been trusted on this site for many years now just not been posting.....
p.s. tomb raider underground, manhunt 2 and motorstorm arctic edge, who needs more, lol.

Ps3 80GB
Model: CECHE01 I believe
_________
Working Games
Samckdown Vs Raw 2010
NFL Madden 2010
NBA 2K10
The Bigs 2
Bloody Roar 4
Capcom Vs Snk 2
Bleach Battle Blader 2
Dynasty Warrior 6
Fahrenheit
Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts:Final Mix
NightShade
Dynasty Warrior Gundams 2
Marvel Vs Capcom 2
Dragonball Z:Infinite Worlds
The only game that was stated to work but hasn't for me is Star Ocean:Till the End Of Time. I have no clue how come X.X
All these games play well, but the animation videos for each of them skip most likely(I believe) because even though PS3 has 2.0 usb it reverts back to 1.1 for the ps2. Also the in-game cut scenes don't skip.

I have a 120GB HD in my PS2 which I used with HDAdvance 2.0. If I were to use this in one of my IDE->USB adapters with Swap Magic, would this work? Or would I need to pull all the games off of the drive, and prepare the drive for Swap Magic?

I followed the tutorial using OpenUSBLd 0.41 (both normal and USBA loaders load up just fine and detect the games) and the games Ar Tonelico and Atelier Iris, and I can't boot either. I get white screen with the Normal version and pink screen with the USBA version, on both games. Any ideas? I also tried USBLoader 0.2b but that one doesn't detect the games, even though it is able to run itself just fine from the very same Harddrive. This is all following the 'Easy' version of the tutorial on a 60GB US PS3 (the original BC ones). Games were made from ISOs using USBUtil 2.00. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Juryiel,
Hmm, strange. I havenīt tested those games myself but theyīre reported as working.
OpenUSBLoader 0.41 is new so Iīm not sure if thatīs the problem. Did you grab the ones that said for the ps3?
If you have another usb drive, try putting your game on that, then after booting USBLoader 0.2b, switch the usb device to see if it detects the game from another drive.
USBLoader 0.2 doesnīt have a usbd.irx built in like 0.2b.
You can try that one. you have to get a working usbd.irx from a ps2 game and place it inside a folder called BADATA-SYSTEM. using uLaunch.elf copy that folder to one of the internal memcards of the ps3. maybe youīll have luck and it will be compatible with your usb device.
Although I didnt use it much thereīs also USBLoader 0.3RC.

How do you actually store multiple games on the root of the USB HDD if the ul.cfg file is created for each game separately?
Or, do they use the same ul.cfg file and you only need it on the drive once?
-Edit-
Nvm, I figured it out. Although what I find weird is some games that are confirmed working on some other posts are not working for me. Guess it's just a trail and error thing, but I'm over-all happy with it :)

the program is still in the beta testing phase............on the ps2, you have usb and network loading. On the ps3, usb works(with slightly less compatibility than on ps2) and the network is a no go(for now). I recently compiled rev122 from the source code and there is better compatibility for ps3 on the usb(games like NeoGeo Battle Coliseum, svc chaos, scarface, etc, works fine). Okay, I just downloaded and dropped all the 0.6 files onto my HDD (inside the swap magic folder). I deleted all the old files from previous usbloader, so its just the ps2 games, and the swap magic folder with smboot0.elf in it. I just started it and forgot whether I need to reformat a memory card or anything.. but I went on ahead to load the game, by going to file browser, giogn to mass, and going to the elf file. now I'm at a XMB looking thing, that says USBLoader version 0.6, and then I picked Raiden III under the game tab. I hit X, and the screen just turned YELLOW.
What am I diong wrong guys?
************* [ - Post Merged - ] *************
Okay, I got it to run, I just had to restart the hdd, by on/offing/onning it. then I hit up+L1 and it brought up the 0.6 thing. Went to game again, and it only recognized Raiden III which I just put onto it today. It didnt recognize any other games that I had on there from 0.2... Am I supposed to leave the old ul.cfg, and USBD.IRX files? or no?
Thanks
************* [ - Post Merged - ] *************
hmm, after I copied pasted the info from the original ul.cfg onto the new one so I could have the full list of games, I tried Raiden III again. Now I'm stuck at a white screen.. Anyone know if this game even works?
I'm gonna keep trying the other games that worked on the 0.2 version: (Initial D, MvC2, GT4, Lumines, Burnout, etc.)
THanks

Damn, same deal with MvC2 and Initial D : YELLOW screen.

Hi Dookie11
Your not the only one having problems with 0.6. I played God of War using 0.6 for the 1st time and since then I havenīt been able to load anything.
If you patched those games your going to have to reinstall them without patching. 0.6 was made to work with untouched games. Also your probably going to have to defragment the HDD. I think because of the improvements in Loading times, 0.6 became real picky with the games.
Whatīs wierd with me is I donīt even get the colored screens. just black. Somes games have booted but then crash before getting ingame.
well good luck on getting it running. Iīm going to take a break for a bit. It gets frustating and time consuming because I only have 8gb pen drives.

Yeah, I'll have to wait till I get my laptop back so I can retransfer the games. Most likely, these were all patched. I know that Burnout was patched. The others, I'm not sure.

Hi Denero and Dookie,
Ya, 0.5 runs real good. 0.6 too, if you defragment the files. I just find 0.6 very picky and itīs kind of a pain defragmenting the files all the time when your just using pen drives. Iīm not complaining though, the program has come a long way. Version 0.7 should be out shortly. I think it mainly deals with HDD loading on the ps2 though.

No problem, just add it to the working games using ver 0.6. and people will know that it didnīt work with 0.2b
I did that with GTA Vice city which works with 0.5 and 0.6 but not with 0.2b. Same thing with God of war 1 and 2 which only work with 0.6

Now over 200 working games on the list.
Also great news. Version 0.7 will now include network loading on the ps3 :) theyīve found the problem and fixed it. Usb loading will always be limited to 1.1 but SMB loading should be able to(or just about),hit dvd speeds.

I can confirm that the SMB share is working in the new build posted at the source repository. I tested the new build myself and.....wow. Compatibility is awesome, FMV stutter is gone(98.7% gone in most games IMO, not even enough stutter to make a fuss about anymore). Ppl check this thread out
http://psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63207
I've been having problems to make network to work, but in the end I did it. The thing is, apparently it works only via lan cable, and not over wireless. Then you have to set up IP's correctly and to open the port that should be used (445) if it's not already opened. Then it works. Though I tried only Bloody Roar 4 and FMV stuttered like crazy, even more then over USB, and the loading times were as twice as long. But hey, it works somehow!

ok so I got the networking to work just dandy by fiddling with it all on by my lonesome lol.
I think im running 0.6 loader but i have no clue. I got the 80 gig software emulation ps3, some movies load amazing others load slow. Same problem i was having with using an external hdd.

But i was curious what does defraging do exactly for the ps2 games? As i just stated in a post a day or so ago I am just joining the party again after a break and would like to know the best way to go about putting games on the hdd and the best ways to go about playing the games for maximum loadspeed and enjoyment. You have to put it in the PS2SMB folder, which is properly shared, then make sure port 445 is listening, or should I say, it's opened.
Then in the loader put for your PS2 IP your PS3's IP, and for PC IP, your PC's where you shared youf folder with the games IP.
Do not forget to make PS3 use wired and not wireless connection!
And that's all, it will work.
And here you go the newest build, for just in case. ;)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7DN67MWO
P.S. Do not forget to put the right gateway too, which is the IP of your router. Even the slightest mistake in the numbers, and it won't work. So check twice. ;)

You're making an obvious mistake, friend. :) It is not the partition you should share, but the folder itself. That is the main source of your problems.
The second source could be that you're putting iso's in the folder, and not game converted with USBUtil. But you most probably just mistyped that one.
The third thing is, you should most definitely put your PS3's IP. You check that one in the network settings of the PS3, there is the IP and the gateway. Gateway is same as all the IP's in the network, but usually the fourth number is just 1.
And do not forget to make a WIRED connection on PS3 before trying anything else. If it's on wireless, it won't work.
Ah I am helping everythere, and I did not get a single thanx. lol
Hope you get it to work soon. ;)
EDIT: here you go, usbutil, just in case.

If the slim PS3 could play PS2 games, then the answer would be yes, but as it obviously cant, then the answer is no.

Ok denero and anyone that needs to know. Here is how I set up networking.
Read carefully and please ask questions if this is not clear enough.
First things first. I am using windows 7 and windows vista. Both worked fine. I use ZERO firewall/antispyware/protection on my PC, Router or anything els.
I also use a wired connection for my PC and PS3 system. For your setup please used wired for both PS3 and PC for the sake of this explanation (and from what I am aware its the only way it works). (also important to note the PS3 must have wired a connection setup and working in the XMB before you read on)
1) On my ps3 I used my preferred method to open the open ps2 loader program on my ps3, that grimlord so kindly provided an easy link to in previous posts of his. So use your preferred method of opening elfs on your PS3 and run the open usb loader. Leave your ps3 on for now at the open ps2 loader.
2) OK now on to the configuration of your ps2 games folder
2a) on your main hard drive (or any internal HDD that is used for storage) create a folder and name it PS2SMB (make sure it is on root of hdd for ease of use).
2b) Next we must share the PS2SMB folder we just made, (For windows 7 you right click the PS2SMB folder you just made and select properties, select the sharing tab and then click share... then select everyone and apply) for other versions of windows please google how to share a folder as to cut down on this post.
>>>this is where it gets a little tricky for newer ppl<<<
3) How to configure games to place in said folder.
3a) You must use the program usbutil (here is version 2.00 thanks to grimlord http://www.megaupload.com/?d=31Q4E0N8) to turn your game iso's into an acceptably readable format that your open ps2 loader can understand. IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS NO GAMES WILL EVER SHOW UP!!!
3b) More info on usbutil.... games that you use usbutil to transfer works best with .iso and .cdi format. So before trying to use the program to transfer your games. Make sure your game file is already in .iso or .cdi format. It makes things easier.
3c) To use usbutil just simply start the program. Goto File>open ISO to create games. Then choose your source games and where you would like the program to place the games..... To make things easier select destination as your earlier made PS2SMB folder. The program is pretty self evident about how to use it. So i will stop here about usbutil.
3d) This small bit of info is reminding you. Games that you wish to play with open ps2 loader MUST be transfered with usbutil to the PS2SMB folder we made earlier.
3e) (Optional but id do it because if you don't you'll have no games lmao)
Use usbutil to transfer a game into your PS2SMB folder right now as a tester game. I used Shadow of the Colossus and Black on my tests.
4) Finally getting to set up your open usb loader on your ps3. (remember i told you to leave it open? Well if you never opened it or closed it go back to your ps3 and reopen the open usb loader that grimlord provided with your method of opening .elf files.)
4a) at the main screen of open ps2 loader goto settings and press x and you will see before your eyes network config with RANDOM information that is semi correct. Well it has to be FULLY CORRECT for open usb loader to use network loading. Well lets make it fully correct.
4b) The First thing I did was goto my PC, open up a command box by going to start>run> type in cmd and pressing enter. Then in your cmd box type ipconfig and press enter. Before your eyes you will see some information pertaining to what we need your open usb loader info to match.
4c) In this information you will see IPv4 or IPv6 address: This information is your PC ip port. So goto your ps3 and enter in your info at the network section of open usb loader on your ps3.
4d) Back at your pc you will see in the ipconfig info a subnet mask. That is another thing you must check and make sure is matching. Most gateways are 255.255.255.0 yours could be different so go check your open usb loader and see if the MASK settings are matching... They do! GREAT!.
4e) Back at your pc you will see a default gateway in the cmd box also. Again make sure your default gateway and your GW on open usb loader match. Make sure they match.
4f) On open usb loader goto PORT and make sure it is 445. Also check to make sure the SHARE NAME is set to PS2SMB (just like the folder we made earlier) if all that is dandy there is one last part...
4g) Your ps2 ip...... The top setting in open usb loader. You yourself will select the last digits for your ip. Make sure the number you choose is higher like 30 or something so it does not match another device you own. To get your ps2 ip easily. You use the first 3 entries from your GW and then two made up numbers. So if your GW is 192.168.2.1, Then your ps2 ip will be 192.168.2.xx (where xx is the number you chose). But remember all ips are somewhat different so make sure you follow 4-4f properly or the networking on open usb loader will not work.
4h)Ok now goto ok at the bottom of the network config on open usb loader and press ok, Then save your setting in open usb loader as to not have an accident or anything.
5) If all is said and done you should now have your wired pc and ps3 connected to a router and online. The open usb loader will be configured properly. The PS2SMB folder will be shared and ready to be read from. (optional) You will have used usbutil to transfer an .iso into your PS2SMB folder.
6) And finally... Go onto open usb loader and goto Network games and press start network. It should countdown from 5 and read from the PS2SMB folder located on your pc. It will populate a list for you. Then select the transferred games and enjoy.
7) small trouble shooting. If your open usb loader freezes during the countdown after you press start network, Your information in network config is wrong.
7a) If your countdown finishes and no games are found
>they have not been transferred with usbutil.
>the PS2SMB folder is not shared properly.
>The open usb loader network config settings could be wrong.
OK so if anyone sees any problems with this post please inform me. I will answer all questions anyone has and would like some feedback as to if I should change or add anything to this post to help confused people. I wrote this in like 15 minutes lol. I am, for the most part, a busy person and will try to commit a few minutes of my life to help if anyone needs it.
I have to give credit to everyone posting here, ps3hax and the teams that made usbutil and the open usb loader.
Because without all you I would not have made this post or had a reason to play my old ps2 games anymore.

I played for about 20 mins before I was happy with the results. It DOES work for me, but I also don't know what I am looking for as far as missing textures.....it looked fine to me. I'm using MGS 3: Subsistence disc 1, PS3 60gb NTSC US, with screensize set to fullscreen and smoothing on(ps3 setting).
Don't know for sure if later in the game there are graphical glitches but I haven't seen anything yet. But, personally I think it might be ps3 model, as in if yours has the ps2 hardware or if it is software emulated.....that may be where your graphical issue comes from.... just a thought

Originally I had a long post on here about how my games turned off every 20 minutes. I said I would look into it and Well it seems my HDD on my pc was turning off after only 20 minutes of use and causing my ps3 to not have anything to stream from.
I fixed it a lot easier than I anticipated. I simply told it to never turn off.
In my case I replace hdd yearly so being a little rough on it now does not matter to me. But I only recommend this method to people who after so many minutes it seems like their game just craps out. Follow these steps to keep your hdd running and not to shut off when it is streaming to your ps3.
VISTA: Control Panel >All Control Panel Items >Power Options >Edit Plan Settings, then select Change advanced power settings. Go down to Hard Disk and select the alloted amount of time you would like it to turn off in.
7: control panel >Hardware and sound > Power options> Find your plan and select Change Plan Settings. Goto hard disk and select the alloted amount of time you would like it to turn off in.
For me I simply set it to never and now games keep playing after 20 minutes.
REMEMBER. Do this only after you continually get booted from a game after a set period of time. This is somewhat rough on the HDD and could damage them after years of use at this rate.

I finally hooked up the network today.
Unfortunately Iīm also suffering serious stuttering and choppiness on the games I tested.
Iīm guessing once again us ps2 users without the EE chip are getting screwed with the emulation. Iīm also experiencing graphical glitches. I have the PAL 60gb ps3 without the EE chip.
Well at least we have one more way to load games. I also didnīt have to deframent the files using SMB and since you donīt have to patch most games that also saves time. Iīm hoping maybe something can be optimized in future versions.
This is really a great job the devs have been doing on this app.
Someone asked what the GAME ID option is for.
That allows you to put the correct game id so you can play online when booting from usb. doenīt work when booting from network.
@glitch. Have you tried using some of the compatibilty modes with GOW2. on which part does the game freeze?
I noticed you took it out from the compatibilty list.
@grimlord.
do you have a ps3 without the EE chip too? Iīm just trying to find out if itīs everyone without the EE chip that are experiencing the stuttering.
@dreaddie kruger.
which usbloader are you using? what are you using for a usb device? If your using a usb HDD, have you deframented the HDD? have you deframented the individual files with the power defragmenter tool?
another thing that gave me problems was installing the games while my PC was busy doing other things. so try making the install without anything else going on with the PC. also to save time you should just try installing one game and then test to see if itīs good.
0.6 is real picky so you should try 0.5 to see if you have more luck. like glitch said, something doesnīt sound right.

01-17-2010, 04:38 PM
@aries2k In GOW it freezes at Kratos, when will it end? No Joke. :( Ive tried a few compatibility modes (most probably all) and no dice, some slow down the FMV's(load alt.core others), speed it up, just slightly, but leave graphical glitches during game play, also slow that down too. :( Perhaps the US 60GB's are at an advantage here, with the EE Chips. :(
PS: it was me who asked about the game ID's XD... I wont be testing for a looonnng while, as i've just lost my complete backup of my games :'( 90GB to be precise.

01-19-2010, 04:36 PM
After reading about how good SMB was working, Iīm also disappointed with the results on the ps3īs without the EE chip. Iīve tested about a dozen games and they all have a graphical glitch when running through SMB. the FMVs are even choppier and thereīs even stuttering during gameplay. god of War also froze twice for me during gameplay. So for the moment, the people without the EE chip are still better off running from USB. we have to remain patient and look at the bright side. a few weeks ago network wasnīt even working on the ps3.
The main coder, Jimmi, said that heīs working on rewriting the network modules so we can hope that it will take care of our problem.
The people with ps3s that have the EE chip should be alot better off using SMB rather than usb.
Hey glitch, Iīm real sorry to hear about all your games. 90gb, ouch, thats alot of games.

Aries2k, gliitch and anyone else with graphic glitches. You have to turn off smoothing to get rid of the graphical glitches. IDK why it helps but it works for my 80 gb NTSC model. I can keep full screen on but screen smoothing causes tons of black spots. Lets hope you all read this!! It took me three hours of snooping and I turned off smoothing and did a major facepalm because that was the problem.
I am sure that us without EE in some cases have the upper hand. For instance my copy of socom combined assault runs at a much higher frame rate than my friend with a 60 gig EE NTSC ps3.
On a second note my 80 gb NTSC (without EE) Loads some games perfect with network and others are like I was using a usb. Maybe I am lucky. Just remember no games that use streaming seem to work at full speeds. So my shadow of the colossus and GTA games sucked and stuttered during gameplay. But!!! killzone (witch I thought streamed) runs like a dvd copy. I think network and usb are completely even as of the moment for us non EE users. Except the occasional game I find that runs flawlessly with networking.

Ya, that took care of that one jagged black glitch that was in every game. Lol, It would have never crossed my mind to try that. With the games Iīve tested, itīs probably about the same through usb or SMB. I few I tried were actually a little worse on SMB in terms of speed and choppiness. I do have Killzone so Iīm going to try that one.
Although you might have found a couple of times when the ps3 without the EE chip might have run better, in most cases weīre at a disadvantage. For instance., ver 0.1 and the oficial release of 0.4 usbloader didnīt work on our ps3. thereīs other homebrew that also doesnīt work but the worse thing is not being able to launch .elf files from the vmc. Meaning we cant use ps2loaders newest feature, IGR :(
works on and off. defragging doesnt always do the trick though. playing nba2k10 btw. I installed xenosaga 1, and didnt work, prolly teh game's incompatible. but it made my nba2k10 not work either (stuck at yellow screen.)
Hi Dookie,
Thatīs happened to me too. I would have more than one game on the usb and after running a game that was incompatible, the other game got corrupted. It sucks for testing games but once you got a list of working games on your usb drive you shouldnīt have to defragment again.
@Denero1,
the last official release is 0.6
All the other revisions are pre-0.7 builds. even though they still have 0.6 in the GUI, theyīre testing features wich will be in the official 0.7 release.
Is there any reason your looking for a build more recent than the one grimlord posted?
hmm...IGR? or wireless?
another great ps2coder has joined the party and has added IGR, in game reset, to ps2loader. this allows you to put an elf on the vmc, so when your ingame, you can press a certain button combo and boot the elf on the vmc. If you put ps2loader on the vmc, you can play a game, reset back to ps2loader and launch another game without the need of rebooting SwapMagic. very handy.
Unfortunately this wonīt work with the ps3īs without the EE chip. Shafted again.:(
Iīve also heard that wireless was now working but I canīt confirm that.
If Grimlord or anybody else that can compile the elf wants to post it, Iīm sure alot of user would apreciate it.

I am aware of that. But they still banned me... Yeah, **removed**. It's stupid, they should have warned me, I mean, it's bloody open source, for pity's sake... :/
Well... Someone ask the mods then? lol I compiled it, and it's ready for sharing.
EDIT: Loading over wireless now most definitely works! Though it's almost as twice as slow as from a wired connection... :/ Hope they improve it soon.
I'm waiting for a green light, to upload the revision.

Permission is not needed, the file is open source, so you arnt breaking any rules.
Also for those interested, i have set up a channel on IRC, so that you guys can discuss USBLoader etc or help those that maybe need help, anyhow click chat at the top or on my link, once in, type /join #USBLoader.
If you want special privledges like Channel Operator/Admin/Owner, you also need to register on the server.
EDIT:If a "trusted" member posted something here deemed to be breaking the rules, the post would be deleted and the poster would get an infraction, or at worst banned for a couple of weeks, banning someone permantly for posting something benificial to the scene, is stupid.

Cool, Iīm glad itīs confirmed that that wireless is working. Now thatīs one advantage over the ps2.
Letīs hope they can tweak those speeds.
It really is an amazing job theyīve been doing on this loader. even for the ps2, itīs turning into the Definitive game loader.

regarding this file... do I have to re-do the entire harddrive (re-install the games via usbutil)? or do I just drag n drop the new smboot0 over the old one, and it's good to go?
thx mang

To get this to work, all you gotta do is: On the PC: Replace the SMBOOT0 file in the hdd where the SWAPMAGIC folder is.
Copy all the games from the hdd to the folder PS2SMB,
On the PS3: Go to Network Settings, make a Wireless connection, Check the ip address of the ps3, it will say IP ADDRESS: 1.X(x being the last number of the IP address) or something, then bootup swapmagic, then PS2Loader, Go down to network config, in the loader change the ip address of where it says "PS2" to what the address of your ps3 is.
Then it should boot when you make a connection, you'll see a list of games. : )
For people who are making a connection for the first time, and want to use wireless
do: "PS2"
IPADDRESS of the ps3 you are running
MASK should be left as is
GW ADDRESSS, will be 192.168.X.X (address of the router)
"PC"
IP ADDRESS of the PC
PORT: 445
SHARE NAME: PS2SMB
Network Startup OFF
(if this is on, it will constantly be crashing, if the connection isnt set up properly) to undo this delete the cfg file in the swapmagic folder)

Well, FF12 NTSC works for sure on PS2loader (V6203 off a USB flash drive) and so does FF12 IZJS with the english patch... However the video pauses every 5 seconds or so. the game itself and in game cut scenes run flawlessly. Still can't get the Network to work via wifi. argh!:dontknow:

Yea, your post is what I went by to help me set everything up. I’m positive everything is setup correctly but there are a couple of things I’m not too sure of.
“On the PC: Replace the SMBOOT0 file in the hdd where the SWAPMAGIC folder is.”
Ok, I have “SWAPMAGIC” and “PS2SMB” folder on my C: and they are shared correctly but I’m not sure if it matters what SMBOOT0 file is put in the SWAPMAGIC folder on my C:? Does it need to be the same one I’m using to boot up off the USB?
I know my Laptop and my PS3 are talking to each other because the media server is working fine, but I’m not too sure if anything on my computer could be using port 445.
Also when I try to connect to network it does the countdown then nothing happens and just says, no items with the picture of a disc (v6 203 and 198).
This is wireless btw.
Just notice when I change the port (change from 445 to 455) it doesn't finish the countdown it pauses at "Loading Network: 1"

I will try my best to answer as fully as possible.
I didnt make it clear enough, that the swap magic file and folder are not supposed to be on the C: HDD they are supposed to be on the USB HDD (sorry for the confusion there)the usb stick has to be in the first port of the usb in the ps3. i just called it HDD just to make it easier i guess.
Anyways, you need to put the file SMBOOT0 and the SWAPMAGIC folder on to the root of the USB, yeah, it has to be in caps otherwise it wont load. When swapmagic boots, you need to press L1+UP.
The reason why you get a network error is because, well its not setup, so i'll help : )
step one: Make sure you are connected to wireless on the PS3 XMB side.(check connection settings in the network settings part. last icon bottom row)
Write down the IP if necessary, your gonna need it.
step two: Check the ip address of your laptop that you will use to stream your games from. This can be found by pressing right click on the little wifi icon, then properties, or configure... i'll find that out later..(quite early here.. heheh)
Write down that too.
step 3:Once you have booted up swap magic and have the PS2Loader 0.6 menu come up, you will need to go into network settings and type the following
where it says:
PS2 IP: that's the IP Address of your ps3.
Ignore the next bunch of numbers.
GW: This is where the IP of your router goes, change the 0 to a 1
With the PC: Type in the IP of your laptop or pc, this is what the PS3 uses to connect to your computer.
Where it says Port leave that as 445(has to be open or in a listening mode) i dont remember the command to see what it is, i'll redo the guide and then post it on here, or put it in the downloads section..anyways don't change the port. (this is why you have the crash)
On with the games, they need to be converted with USB ADVANCE or USB UTIL
Then placed into the PS2SMB folder.(games will show up, when placed and converted into this folder)
These can be found dotted around the web, or in the downloads section of this website. USBADVANCE pack, all you need is the program. : )
Lemme know if you have any more problems.

Thanks again for the post, I wasn't sure if I needed a folder for SWAPMAGIC on my HDD and Flashdrive but this clears it up. I pretty confident I have everything setup correctly besides having the SWAPMAGIC folder on the C: and my flash drive which I'm not sure if that would even cause a problem with my connection. Anyway, When I get home from work today I will try again, I feel that my problem lies in port forwarding 445. I knew how to do this on my Dlink Router but on my new Linksys I'm having difficult understanding how. I pretty much went under "Gaming and Application" and set the Port Forwarding to PS3 (which I type the name in myself though I'm not sure if that matters) Open ports 445 to 445 and put the Ip as 192.168.1.102 (My PS3 downstairs IP). I wish I knew more about networking! :hmmmm:

@Gambeno, this is the command that you need to use to check the open ports - use cmd in the task bar and type: netstat –a 445 will be near the top. : )

I never saw your reply before! O_O
My PS3 has software emulated PS2, but that is not the problem, as I read people playing their originals MGS3 on their PS3's with emulated PS2. It must be the loader. Game works fine, until snake lands in the forest. It has something to do with the land oudoors. Did you play that much? Game freezes there, but if I load a savegame, there are no textures... :dontknow:

@Gliitch, I did what you said and without listing everything that came up this is what came up with "445".

So I guess it is listening :hmmmm: But I still don't see what else could be the problem for it not showing up on my ps3. Argh!

Hmm still not working.. well erm, did you check if you have the right IP's for the ps2 part and the pc? also find out the IP of your router it may well be different from the standard , when you put that in, it may well work. it your router ip goes where the GW thing is.
Gambeno
01-28-2010, 10:28 PM
Yep, I have check everything pertaining to my Ip's
Router: 192.168.1.1
PS3:192.168.1.102
PC: 192.168.1.101
I know they are in correct, it has to be something else. I used USButil to convert the .ISO so I know it cant be that because the games load up fine off USB port. The folder, "PS2SMB" is located on my C: and both my C: and PS2SMB are shared. Not using windows firewall at all, but I do have Trend Micro Internet Security running. Im going to try a disable that and see if it helps, im not sure if it would block it or anything. Only option I have not tried at this point besides moving the PS2SMB folder somewhere else.
gliitch
01-28-2010, 11:20 PM
only share your PS2SMB folder, failing that move it to another drive the PS2SMB folder that is. they should show, considering you get no crash now or error, it would seem you've done it correctly on the PS3 side...now for the games.. is the cfg file in with the games? Just curious, what ps3 do you have, uk or US? US is better for Wifi, the UK is better for USB.
Gambeno

so i was just wondering.
I live in america and i got my ps3 like a year after they came out abouts. After checking i found where it says its manufacturing date on it. 2007
its a 60 GB
and i currently have the most up to date firmware
Would this still work for my system or was it covered up in a firmware update.
If it still works i'd like to plan on buying the discs and a new externaL HDD for it.
seeing as how an explot has been found latly im waiting on a hello world code to start surfacing. Best of hopes.
Also, would i be able to run PS2 homebrew off the HDD also? Cause i know there are oldschool homebrew emulators on the ps2

Yes you can use this on your system. Swap Magic really can't be blocked by a firmware update, so no worries there.
