Firstly, i hate the word jailbreak, but as so many people call hacking the PS3, jailbreaking, that is what i will call it for this guide.
Secondly, the old guides are outdated and need refreshed.

    (Q) Why Would I Hack/Jailbreak My PS3 ?
    (A) Hacking your PS3, gives you so many new option’s, you will be able to use emulators, homebrew apps and game backups as well as being able to use Linux, after Sony removed the function in firmware 3.21.

    CFW(Custom Firmware)/MFW(Modified Firmware)

    (Q) CFW/MFW Or Dongle ?
    (A) CFW/MFW is the way to go, dongles are dead and you should not be using them.

    (Q) Which PS3 Consoles Can Be Jailbroken
(A)here is a list taken from the PS3 Dev Wiki
    SKU Models

or you can take a look at this image:
     photo x4i6shO_zps9f4b8062.jpg

    (Q) Which PS3 Consoles cannot be Jailbroken
    (A) 3K and 4K consoles(Some Slim and all Super Slim)

    (Q) Is there a firmware my PS3 should be on ?
    (A) The most recent Rebug or Rogero seems to be the most desired

    (Q) What Firmwares cannot be hacked yet ?
    (A) Firmwares from 3.56 upwards are un-jailbreakable at the moment, perhaps it will remain that way, or perhaps we will see a break through in the future, only time will tell.

    (Q) How do i install the latest 4xx CFW/MFW
    (A) You should follow these guides:
[TUT] How to install the latest 4.XX CFW’s
Nicolas’ MiralaTijera CFW 4.40 NooB Tutorial
[Video Tutorial] How To Install 4.30 PS3 CFW (From 3.55 CFW)

    (Q) I have found some CFW/MFW on the internet, how do i know it is real ?
Use this application, it will help you identify a real or fake CFW/MFW:

    Downgrading

    (Q) When i bought my PS3, the firmware was above 3.55/My family member updated my console when i was out :( , how can i have jailbreak my console ?
    (A) You need to downgrade your PS3, this is rather a tedious process, involving soldering several wires to your PS3, but in the future we will have solderless models of these products, for information on how to downgrade, check these threads:
Ultimate Fool Proof Guide: Ps3 Hardware Downgrading
[Tutorial] E3 Flasher: Fast Swap Dual Guide For All OFW/CFW

Q.) Can 4.xx CFW be installed on 4.xx OFW ?
A.) NO, NO and NO, you need to DOWNGRADE to a 3.55 Firmware.

    Q.) Can i Software Downgrade from 4.xx OFW ?
A.) NO, at the moment you MUST, use a Hardware Flasher, like Progskeet or E3, if you are comfortable with soldering, then Progskeet is the recommended device.

    Q.) Can i brick my PS3 installing a 4.xx CFW ?
A.) Yes, as with all OFW’s or CFW’s you have a chance of bricking, with CFW’s your chances of bricking become a lot higher, when you dont read.

    Q.) Can i brick my PS3 by downgrading ?
A.) Of course you can, but most bricks occur due to user error.

Q.) Who is to blame for any bricks ?
A.) You as the user are, most bricks are down to user error, take your time to read, take your time to understand, take all the time possible and have some patience, it will pay off and be rewarding in the end.

Q.) I want to downgrade my PS3, but im either too afraid or i have zero soldering skills, can someone do it for me ?
A.) Well doing something yourself, is always rewarding, but if you don’t have the confidence, you don’t have the confidence, so you can ask anyone from the trusted downgraders thread:
    Trusted PS3 Downgrade Providers

    Future Software Methods

Q.) Will there ever be a method to upgrade from straight from 4.xx OFW to 4.xx CFW ?
A.) We are but mere mortals, we are not psychic, the only advice that one can give you is, be patient and wait until the PlayStation 4 is released.

Q.) Will there ever be a method to Software Downgrade from 4.xx ?
A.) We are but mere mortals, we are not psychic, the only advice that one can give you is, be patient and wait until the PlayStation 4 is released.

    Homebrew/Backups

    (Q) Ok so i have CFW installed, how do i run homebrew ?
    (A) In the game section, you will see “Install Package Files”, you will be able to install all your homebrew and backup managers from there, just a note though, the PKG files that you are installing, need to be on the root of your FAT32 formatted thumbdrive/external HDD.

    (Q) I need a backup manager, what should i use
    (A)
    Iris Manager
    multiMAN

    Storage Options

    (Q) What are my storage options for backing up games(This really 0nly applies to Fat PS3′s) ?

(A.1) You can backups certain games to CD/DVD/BD disc’s, read here for more information.
(A.2) You can install games on the PS3′s internal HDD or use an External USB HDD, which needs to be formatted to FAT32, you can also use a FAT32 USB Thumb Drive, note that with FAT32 you are limited to games with single files under 4GB, if you prefer all your games to be on the internal HDD, you can get up to 1TB 2.5? HDD, or you can use the Xecuter PS3 HDXT method and have your internal HDD on the outside of the machine, the benefit of this, is that you can use 3.5? Sata and IDE HDD’s as internal storage.

Some more PS3 HDD Information submitted by ieder-zijn-meis(Thanks again)
    - maximum height is 9,5mm (many 2.5? drives above 640GB are too high too fit inside)
    - maximum PS3 filesystem is 1TB (512KB block size)
    - maximum FAT32 theoretical size is 8TB, practical limit on the PS3 is 2TB
    - 7200rpm can be used, as well as Flashdrives (although the 1/5th lower loadingtime of GTA5 can be considered too low to justify the higher pricetag of SATA Flashdrives.
    - SATAII-300 can be used, although it will work on SATA1-150 speed interface.
    - If using external 3.5? drives hooked up to the internal SATA, you’ll need an external powersupply (some drivebays include them).
    - If on low budget or you like DIY: use a normal extension (male to female) SATA cable (and make sure it doesn’t get loose) and recycle the case + powersupply of an external USB harddisk (without using the USB connection/conversion).
    - Don’t use RAID or SAN drives with (e)SATA interface, just a plain single drive with a bare SATA connector (many controllers don’t work without drivers/software).
    - Games can be hardcoded for BluRay speeds (9MB/s) so sticking a 85~220MB/s harddrive inside will not speedup everything/allways (but most do).
    - If you plan on exchanging the drive, download the full PUP of your FW you are using and put it on an USB Mass Storage Device formatted with FAT32 in PS3UPDATEPS3UPDAT.PUP and disconnect the LAN before re powering the PS3 (or you’ll bound to end up with the latest (3.55 now) unjailbreakable/undowngradable version).
    - Use a good fitting X screwdriver, the screws fitted to the HD<>tray are made of very soft aluminum.

Here is a tutorial, by forum member Invi, on how to an External IDE HDD Case and use it as Internal Storage:
HowTo: Use an external IDE HDD Case to connect an Internal 3,5″ Sata HDD as PS3 HDD.

An image of the Xecuter PS3 HDXT.

Videos of different HDD expansion options.

    ODDE’s

    (Q) As stated above, 3K and 4K consoles cannot be jailbroken, so am i out of luck as far as Homebrew and Backups are concerned ?
    (A) No, there are a a few devices that will help you play backups and homebrew, they are called ODDE’s, the name of these ODDE’s are E3, 3K3Y and Cobra, you can find information here:
3K3Y ODDE all you need to know: Info/links/etc
Cobra ODE Installation Tutorial 3XXX and 25XX Series
    [Pros/Cons]: Cobra and 3K3Y
My advise is to find a machine that you can downgrade, spend your money on this before wasting money on an ODDE

[UPDATE] Sorry to dissappoint you, but the N64 Emulator is not going to happen soon on the PS3 because of the lack of homebrew support. The emulator will still be supported on other devices (Android, iOS, Windows,…). Thanks to mckenziesdaddy and STLcardsWS for the notice. Sorry for creating any false hopes..

    Question by ruiner

I know the release is coming when it is ready, That is not my question. My question is the N64 core coming to PS3 or Will we be left out due to the issues with making something like that run well on the system.

    Answer by Squarepusher

    There are two problems -

1 - PSGL is OpenGL ES 1.1 based. We need at least OpenGL ES 2.0 for libretro GL support. Somebody from the PS3 scene could do it - but they either only want to work on PSL1GHT or they just don’t believe in sharing.

2 - The pre-existing PPC32 dynarec would need to be heavily modified in order to run reliably on PS3, which is a Sony variant of PPC64.

I don’t want to totally rule it out but it definitely won’t make it in time for RetroArch 1.0.0 [for PS3] if at all - and it would have to depend on teamwork from other members in the community. Right now - these two things not being there makes a release on PS3 not very fruitful.

I wonder if that Wii64 team still have anything that could prove to be of use and whether they’d be interested in sharing. Then again, if it’s not Glide64-based and not OpenGL-based then probably not of much use given the direction we’re going in. But it would never hurt if they could help out and share their findings.

The ScummVM emulator for the PS3 has been updated. Read the quoted text below for more information.

ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed.
ScummVM supports many adventure games, including LucasArts SCUMM games (such as Monkey Island 1-3, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, …), many of Sierra’s AGI and SCI games (such as King’s Quest 1-6, Space Quest 1-5, …), Discworld 1 and 2, Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2, Beneath A Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress, Broken Sword 1 and 2, Flight of the Amazon Queen, Gobliiins 1-3, The Legend of Kyrandia 1-3, many of Humongous Entertainment’s children’s SCUMM games (including Freddi Fish and Putt Putt games) and many more.

After 11 long months we are thrilled to announce the release of ScummVM 1.6.0.

It’s not very often (if ever) that we add 4 new engines in a single release, but yes, these have been busy months for the team indeed.

Let’s just list the new games 1.6.0 contains for you:

    • 3 Skulls of the Toltecs
    • Eye of the Beholder
    • Eye of the Beholder II: The Legend of Darkmoon
    • Hopkins FBI
    • Tony Tough and the Night of Roasted Moths
    • The Journeyman Project: Pegasus Prime

Other significant features include support for the Macintosh version of Discworld 1 and the music in the Macintosh versions of LucasArts adventures, an update to the latest Roland MT-32 emulation code, a new cool grid chooser for your savegames, an extended FluidSynth configuration dialog, and major bugfixes to bike fights in Full Throttle. We have also added Belarusian, Finnish and Galician translations to our GUI.

Of course, there is much more; you can find the full list in our release notes.

    Enjoy!

    [Update] CEX version released

Libretro has updated Retroarch to V0.9.9 for a variety of systems (Android, GC and Wii) today including PS3 for DEX users:

    PS3 Related Changelog:

    * (PS3) Optimize PS3 video driver extensively - should result in a big latency reduction.
    * (PS3) Totally remove the ‘old’ fixed 2-pass shader system and replace it with a new, forward-compatible with PC 8-pass shader stacking system. RGUI/RMenu makes CGP files dynamically as you set new shader stacks.
    * (Wii/PlayStation3/Xbox 1/Xbox 360) thanks to many code alterations. Performance
is also much improved on the platforms which could already play them, such as
    Android and PC.

Here is a video created by UnknownArchive , it shows Roms working straight from the XMB, without having to start any app, i do not know how this works, but it relies on the best Emulator in existence, RetroArch, anyhow, enjoy the video, just a small warning though, if you are prone to butt hurt or if humour offends you, then don’t watch this:

[Release] FB Alpha RL (Retro Loader) v1.00 (CFW 3.40/4.XX)

Hiyas everyone, today I come with something that I’ve been working for the last few days, please read the documentation before using it, I know that some people don’t usually like to read, but please take a minute to read and see what FB Alpha RL offers.

Note: I verified the problems with emulation of CPS-1, and it seems it is only happening on libretro port, not on the Windows official release of FB Alpha. I tried to see if I could find the issue, but I couldn’t identify it.

    Information:

As a dev from the official FB Alpha Team, FB Alpha RL was made with a objective in mind, to keep the original experience from the official FB Alpha (for Windows OS) on the PS3 system.

Even when I don’t know how to implement a fancy GUI for the PS3 system with textures and all the complicated stuff, I managed to use my previous application core (gamePKG core) to create this nice frontend for RetroArch’s FB Alpha core.

I know that RetroArch is already a frontend, but I like to keep things simple and straight to the point.

Please, read the technical info for more details.

    Technical Info:

Signed for CFW 3.40 / 4.XX (should work for everyone). Tested @ 1080p resolution via HDMI.

FB Alpha RL uses a custom “burn_drivers.h” header file that was generated by modifying the official windows version of FB Alpha with a routine to generate such file on launch.

The header have a big structure with all the information for all supported drivers in FB Alpha v0.2.97.28. Information such as:

    • Romset Name (Ex. kof2002)
    • Parent ROM (Ex. sf2)
    • Year
    • Manufacturer (Ex. Capcom)
    • System (Ex. Neo Geo)
    • Max players
    • Game Screen Resolution
    • Game Screen Aspect Ratio

Future release will have a custom generated header with all the ROM information as well, so the application will be able to verify every romset with precise CRC32 checks (as in the official FB Alpha for Windows).

FB Alpha RL will scan the following directories for ZIP files:

    Specific directories:

    • /dev_hdd0/game/ROMS00000/USRDIR
    • /dev_hdd0/game/ROMS00000/USRDIR/fba
    • /dev_hdd0/game/SSNE10000/USRDIR/cores/roms

    Generic directories:

    • /dev_*/roms
    • /dev_*/roms/fba

    Devices scanned are:

    • dev_hdd0 (PS3 Internal HDD)
    • dev_usb000 (External USB)
    • dev_usb001 (External USB)
    • dev_usb002 (External USB)
    • dev_usb003 (External USB)
    • dev_cf (Compact Flash)
    • dev_sd (SD Card)
    • dev_ms (Memory Stick)

NOTE: You don’t need the official RetroArch installed, this already has my own modified build incorporated into FB Alpha RL installation directory. So you can safely install the official RetroArch and it won’t interfere.

    Usage:

    • Use UP and DOWN to select Games.
    • Press  to Load the selected Game.
    • Press  to Quit and return to XMB.
    • Press [SELECT] to Load “RetroArch” (FB Alpha Core).

    Features:

    • Auto configure screen Aspect Ratio on game load.
    • Quick ROM(s) scanning in extensive path locations.
    • Romset validation against FB Alpha v0.2.97.28 drivers library.
    • Checking for duplicate ROM(s).
    • Detailed info about listed ROM(s).
    • Full game name display for easier navigation.
    • Direct loading of ROM(s).
    • Simple GUI & nice application logos(LMAO xD).

WIP / Coming on future releases:

    • Set System Input preset on Game Load (Ex. NeoGeo.cfg / Shooters.cfg / etc).
    • Simple Input Mapping feature.
    • Display Extended ROM information by pressing .

    Changelog:

    1.00 (January 30, 2013)

    • Initial Release

    Thanks to:

    • My buddies Treble Winner (Barry) / Kev / IQ_132 from the original FB Alpha Team <3.
    • PS3 Scene websites (in no order) such as: PS3HAX / PSX-Scene / PS3Crunch / Etc, for you support
    • TheMaister / Twinaphex / Squarepusher / Company - Libretro/RetroArch is just amazing.
    • pete_uk - for your unofficial RetroArch builds.
    • STLcardsWS - for your support
    • aldostools - your ps3tools for windows are the best =)
    • deank - multiMAN helped me research / debug my application
    • fail0verfl0w, GeoHot, etc - for all you have done for the PS3 scene
    • Annonymous - for releasing Sony SDKs

Thanks to anyone else I forgot that in some way contributed to the PS3 scene and as a result I was able to do this homebrew application.

    [Release] RetroArch v0.9.8 (PS3/CFW 3.40-4.XX/Unofficial)(MOD by CaptainCPS-X)

Hiyas everyone here I bring you my own build of RetroArch with a nice ROM(s) loading fix, and as a bonus I included SNES9X-NEXT (LIBRETRO CORE) and FB ALPHA (LIBRETRO CORE) builds compiled/signed by me.

Loading of ROM(s) can be done directly from multiMAN (retro column) or other external method now. This should work on CFW 3.40 to 4.XXwithout problems.

Here is the README.txt with more detailed info:

    ——————————————————————-
    RetroArch v0.9.8 (PS3/CFW 3.40-4.XX/Unofficial)(MOD by CaptainCPS-X)
    ——————————————————————-

    [R1]

This modified build fixes issues with ROM(s) not loading
correctly on multiMAN or other external methods.

As a bonus I included a working builds of:

    - SNES9X-NEXT (LIBRETRO CORE)
    - FB ALPHA (LIBRETRO CORE)

    ——————————————————————-

    [Instructions]

1- Install official RetroArch v0.9.8 on your PS3.
2- Install the PKG included here (you MUST do step 1 first).
    3- Enjoy!

    ——————————————————————-

    [Note]

Do not bother Squarepusher / TwinAphex / TheMaister or any of
the official RetroArch developers if you find any problems
    with this build.

    This is a unofficial release.

    ——————————————————————-

    [Thanks to]

The original LibRetro / RetroArch developers / contributors who have
made this application a great free homebrew.

And thanks to the original developers who wrote the core of each
    emulator (arcade/console/handleheld/etc).

Thanks to everyone else that I missed here and really deserves
    credit

    ——————————————————————-

I will release the code modifications later, I been all day/night messing with code and I need to take some rest (sleep xD), but later I’ll get in touch with RetroArch devs to share my “quick” fix for the ROM(s) loading issue.

Themaister and Squarepusher have updated RetroArch for the PS3 to version 0.9.8, here is a quote from the source:

    ——————————————————————————
    WHAT IS RETROARCH?
    ——————————————————————————
RetroArch is a modular multi-system emulator system that is
designed to be fast, lightweight and portable. It has features
few other emulator frontends have, such as real-time rewinding
    and game-aware shading.

    —————————————————————————-
    HOW TO INSTALL THIS
    ——————————————————————————

    ——————————————————————————
    ON DEBUG (DEX) PS3
    ——————————————————————————
Put the PKG file ‘retroarch-ps3-v0.9.8-dex.pkg’ on your
USB stick, put it in your PS3. Go to the PS3 XMB - go to the
Game tab - Select ‘Install Packages’, and install the PKG file.

    ——————————————————————————
    ON CFW P3
    ——————————————————————————
Put the PKG file ‘retroarch-ps3-v0.9.8-cfw.pkg’ on your
USB stick. Put it in your CFW PS3. Go to the PS3 XMB - go to the
Game tab - select ‘Install Packages’, and install the PKG file.

NOTE: The official release no longer supports Geohot/Wutangzra
CFWs. If you must use them, you have to do pkg_finalize on the PKG
    to install it.

    ——————————————————————————
    PLAYSTATION3 PORT
    ——————————————————————————
The PS3 port of RetroArch is one of the most developed console ports
    of RetroArch.

A couple of unique features RetroArch PS3 boasts that is not commonly
    found anywhere else:

    - Game-aware shading in every emulator now (*)
    - Real-time rewinding
    - More shader features (motion blurring, etc)
    - Switching between emulator cores seamlessly, and ability to install new
    libretro cores

Included with RetroArch PS3 are a bunch of shaders - including the
latest versions of the popular xBR shader. It is possible to use two
shaders simultaneously to get the best possible graphical look.

    * Check out Opium2k’s manual shaders for Zelda 3 and others - you can
find DLC packs for RetroArch at this site:

    ——————————————————————————
EMULATOR/GAME CORES BUNDLED WITH PS3 PORT
    ——————————————————————————
The following emulators have been ported to RetroArch and are included
in the PS3 release of RetroArch.

For more information about them, see the included
    ‘retroarch-libretro-README.txt’ file.

Im sure 90% of this forum loves Pokémon in some way, for those of you using either VBA-PS3 or the more advanced RetroArch, you can take advantage of  the Pokémon: Liquid Crystal Project whilst using your favourite control pad on your favourite console, now onto what Pokémon: Liquid Crystal Project actually is, he is a small quote from an article written by Jake Durasamy aka Zeikku, the Graphics artist for the project.

    What is Pokémon: Liquid Crystal?

Pokémon: Liquid Crystal is a ROM Hack of Pokémon: Fire Red which was initially started by my friend Kristian, who had pretty much completed around 25% of the game’s overall development when he had appointed me to being the co-owner and developer of the project. Nowadays, there are other people on the team who are great assets and will be mentioned later on in this editorial.

The workload between us was quite simple really. Kristian was in-charge of coding, scripting and the assembly and disassembly of our ROM. I was in charge of the graphics – so everything you guys can see in the screenshots below are redrawn from existing images or drawn completely from scratch in Microsoft Paint. We also have a music composer under the name “Magnius” who remixed and recomposed all of the original 8-bit melodies into 16-bit midi’s that we would then use to re-create the greatest unofficial Pokémon game of all time.

The game itself is a Crystal remake and much more. The original Crystal version offered 251 obtainable Pokémon to catch, two regions to explore and 16 badges to acquire. Pokémon: Liquid Crystal, however, offers three regions to explore, 20 badges to acquire, 386 Pokémon to obtain and the same story as the original but with extra twists and story plots. This meant that we had to rid the ROM of all data from Pokémon: Fire Red – which then gave us a brand new, newly-formatted ROM. This space was then used for music, assembly routines, maps, region layouts and general graphics.

Editorial: A developer’s diary on recreating Pokémon: Crystal for the GBA

Jake also wrote this on Twitter:

I’m the graphics artist and co-owner of the Pokémon: Liquid Crystal Project, a Crystal Remake for the GBA.

If you are unaware of what the project is, please read the developer diary I wrote previously:
    http://www.neogamr.net/news/editorial-a-developers-diary-on-recreating-pokmon-crystal-for-the-gba

Suggestions for graphics and visuals are appreciated as tweets to my Twitter account, simply because I’m online there all the time, but commenting on this reddit thread is fine, it just means it’ll take a little longer to reply at times.

My Twitter account is found at: https://twitter.com/_Zeikku

For any suggestions for features contact linkandzelda, the initial owner of the hack:

We really want to nail this release because it will be the first release candidate since beta 3 was released last year. You can also take the time to ask me questions, and I’ll do my best to answer all of them in Q&A fashion.

So let’s hear those questions and suggestions.

So go follow Jake on Twitter and give him some help :)

You will need one of these Emulators to run the game:

    VBA-PS3 (Very Old)

    RetroArch (recommended)

ThatOtherDev has released his Homebrew Game Hero City 2 (v1.3) for the Playstation 3. Previous versions has only been available for Wii & Windows. The game is very interesting, makes fun and runs nice on homebrew enabled consoles

Hero City 2 is an open world superhero game. You run and jump around punching monsters and robots and collecting things and in the process of doing so you upgrade your abilities and unlock new tasks. It’s a massive step up from the first Hero City.

There are some differences between this and the original Wii version. Most of which I hope to correct in future updates. But overall it’s a pretty decent port. It runs at 60 frames per second in HD and looks exactly as it should.

I think it’s probably the best homebrew game on PS3 (though that’s obviously subjective and I’m definitely biased). It’s certainly the one I’m most proud of. So I hope you like it. Feedback is always appreciated.

    Controls:
Left analog stick = controls the player
Right analog stick = controls the camera
    L1 = left punch
    R1 = right punch
X = jump (hold to charge up)
    Square = save
Triangle = return to the title screen

In other news: Cobra-USB dongles are no longer required to play PlayStation 2 retail discs on your PlayStation 3 thanks to developers mysis and eussNL. What’s even better is this modification does not discriminate — all PlayStation 3 models are fully supported!

The only requirement is that your PlayStation 3 must be running firmware version 3.55.

Note: This will not run PlayStation 2 backups. It is the same buggy emulator Sony introduced in firmware update 2.60.

Getting Playstation 2 Software Emulator working

Method (on Firmware 3.55, without! Cobra-USB Dongle or Downgrade) for all consoles (fat & slim).

    1. Replace following files on your consoles /dev_flash/
with the ones included in this archive
       p3dwik-ps2compatfiles.rar
    2. Get into Factory Service Mode (FSM Tool/Dongle)
    3. Insert your Original PS2 Game Disc
    4. It will run.

Note: Backups wont work. You’re getting the compatibility of the 2.60 software emulator with all of its bugs.

    Download: p3dwik-ps2compatfiles.rar
    Possible compatibility Lists:

    PS2 Compat. flag

All consoles have hardware information. In GameOS you can call Lv2 Syscall 393 (0×189) sys_sm_get_model
to get your consoles information. In Lv1/Hypervisor its in the repository nodes sc 0x5B lv1_get_repository_node
with Parameters “sys”,”hw”,”config” usually noded as “sys.hw.config#0″ or something. These information are mostly
technical related and not just apply to the software emulator, but the PS3 system as a whole.

    Result examples:

    4E 00 FF FF 0A 03 BC 3C <--> on Hypervisor Page

    0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0100 0000 0000 0000 <--> Mask:Backwards Compatible Flag

XMB checks this flag and if == 0, it will give following message: “This model of the PS3™ system is not compatible with PlayStation®2 format software.”

It may be hard to believe, but it is almost two years since PS Jailbreak was released, reversed, the PS3 free’d and then locked back up again, a lot has gone on since then, Sony scaring away “hackers” and many other events.

The PS3 should be free as the Wii and Xbox 360, but the people that are truly capable of pwning the PS3 are either too scared or just cant be bothered with the drama associated with the PS3 Scene.

It is of course 2012 and i see threads every day, asking how to jailbreak ones PS3, so i am creating this article in a hope to help those that need it, this
is my fourh F.A.Q, for those of you wishing to read my previous ones, visit here.

    (Q) Why Would I Hack/Jailbreak My PS3 ?
    (A) Hacking your PS3, gives you so many new option’s, you will be able to use emulators, homebrew apps and game backups as well as being able to use Linux, after Sony removed the function in firmware 3.21.

    (Q) Is there a firmware my PS3 should be on ?
    (A) It seems the preferable firmwares are 3.15(For the real OtherOS), 3.41(The original “Jailbreak” firmware) and 3.55(the first CFW PS3), 3.55 is the favourite and most used.

    (Q) What Firmwares cannot be hacked yet ?
    (A) 3.56 to 4.21 are unhackable at the moment, perhaps it will remain that way, or perhaps we will see a break through in the future, only time will tell.

    (Q) But when i bought my PS3, the firmware was above 3.55/My family member updated my console when i was out :( , how can i have Homebrew ?
    (A) All hope isn’t lost, you can downgrade your consoles firmware with hardware, here is a list:

    • Infectus
    • Progskeet
    • Teensy 2.0++/NORway
    • PNM
    • Noraliser
    • PIC32MX
    • E3

    Visit here for more information:

    • PS3 Dev Wiki - Hardware Flashing.

    (Q) Which PS3 Consoles cannot be downgraded ?

    (A) Unfortunately there are some consoles that cannot at this stage be downgraded, these are certain models of CECH-25xx, 3K models and 4K models, for more info, check here:

    • Checking console capability of running 3.55

    (Q) Downgrading was a pain, i don’t want to go through that again, is there a way i can protect my PS3 from accidental upgrading ?
    (A) You can use Team Rebugs firmware spoofer, it spoofs the firmware, so that when someone attempts to update the PS3, via internet, the PS3 tells them they are already on the highest firmware, as an extra precaution, you should remove your consoles access to the internet, when you are not around, you can grab your spoofer, from the offical Rebug site here.

    (Q) What Firmwares are available for me to install
    (A) There are many different versions of MFW, but the most popular are:

    • Rogero
    • Rebug
    • Kmeaw

    (Q) How do i install CFW ?
    (A) If you aren’t already on 3.55, you will need to update to the official Sony firmware, then install a CFW via recovery, Pirate wrote a great guide, which you can read here:
[Tutorial] How to play and install Backups with Kmeaw CFW+PSN without risk of brick or itskamel’s NOOB JAILBREAK GUIDE

    (Q) Ok so i have CFW installed, how do i run homebrew ?
    (A) You will see in the game section, you will see “Install Package Files”, you will be able to install all your homebrew and backup managers from there, just a note though, the PKG files that you are installing, need to be on the root of your FAT32 formatted thumbdrive/external HDD.

    (Q) Now that i have updated to 3.55 CFW, is there a list of working homebrew app’s/games ?
    (A) Here are a few links:

    (Q) How do i run backups ?
    (A) You will need a backup manager, it seems that only two are being used at the moment:

    • Rogero’s Rogero Manager
    • deank’s Cobra endorsed mmCM

    (Q) I have games that require 3.56 firmware and above, how do i play them ?
    (A) The only easy option available is a reDRM device called True Blue(TB), you can buy the piece of shit or one of its clones, we aren’t a sell-out site like TBCrunch, so we will not link to such devices, though if you have a TB Device, there are members like Adamsville on the forum who will help you, my stance as many others on this forum is:

But as i said, Adamsville will help, if needed.

    (Q) There surely has to be a free method for playing backups ?
    (A) Up until recently, the diseased reDRM device was the only way, but recently a CEX>Dex conversion was leaked and that paved the way to running backups which require a higher firmware.

    (Q) How do i convert my PS3 from Cex>Dex ?
    (A) There are a few ways, though this is an extremely dangerous method for your PS3, if you do not know what you are doing, you will brick, check here for some help:

    (Q) How do i run backups on a Cex>Dex converted PS3 ?
    (A) There are different methods popping up, here is one:

    (Q) What are my storage options for backing up games ?

Some more PS3 HDD Information submitted by eussNL(Thanks again)

An image of the Xecuter PS3 HDXT.

Videos of different HDD expansion options.

    (Q) Now that i am on 3.55, can i install Linux ?
    (A) Follow this thread.

    (Q) Ok im fed up with using my thumb drive, is there a way to download apps directly to the PS3.
    (A) Yes,you will need to instal “Package Installer”, then you will be able to FTP the apps to the “packages” folder on your PS3, you can find more about that here.

    (Q) Ok so i have backed up a game, i want to save that game to my computer as an extra backup, or i want to mod the game, how do i transfer it from my PS3.
    (A) There are two methods, FTP, there are three of those at the moment:

    Alternatively you can use

    • Comgenies Awesome Filemanager

    or

if you cant use FTP, or have an External HDD, Comgenies Filemanager is the best choice.

    (Q) I want to be able to create my own Homebrew, is it possible.

(A.1) Yes, using the Open Source PS3 SDK, named PSL1GHT, you can create Homebrew, PSL1GHT was created by AerialX, read about it here.

(A.2) You can use the Official Sony SDK, it is reported that this is better for creating homebrew, than the open source version.

    (Q) I backed up a few of my movies to .AVI and .MKV formats, but when i try and play them through Showtime, or stream them via PS3Media Server, i get a Cinavia warning, is there any way past this ?
    (A) You can install this app:

    • Disable Cinavia Installer (3.41 & 3.55)(By Team Rebug)

    (Q) Can play PS2/PS1 backups on my Jailbroken PS3 ?
(A.1) You can use this method, it lets you use Swap Magic to load PS2 backups on your PS3, the only consoles allowed, are those that are Backwards Compatible, this option also works on a non Jailbroken PS3, even with firmware 3.70
(A.2) You can use the Cobra USB dongle, to play PS1 or PS2 backups on your Jailbroken PS3, it is compatible with firmwares 3.41 and 3.55.
(A.3) You can use this method to play PS1 backups on firmware 3.41 and 3.55.

    (Q) Can i use internet and play online with CFW/JB, what about PSN/SEN etc ?
    (A) Yes, browser with apps for 3.55 and lower works online except PSN/SEN, online gaming is possible only via X/BS/link/ai on PC, if game has LAN option:
    Playing online via XBSlink
    Thanks spok

    (Q) The PS3 boot up logo annoys me, can i change it ?
    (A) Indeed you can, you can change both the visual and audio, these logos are called ColdBoots, you can either:

    (Q) The PS3 seems to have went on an epic journey, where can i read more about it ?
    (A) You can check out www.ps3history.net

    (Q) If i need help that is not mentioned in this F.A.Q, what should i do ?
    (A) You could either ask the question in this article, or ask your question in the forums help section here.
You can also check the PS3 Dev Wiki

    WHAT IS RETROARCH?
    ——————
RetroArch is a modular multi-system emulator system that is
designed to be fast, lightweight and portable. It has features
few other emulator frontends have, such as real-time rewinding
    and game-aware shading.

    WHAT IS LIBRETRO?
    —————-
Libretro is the API that RetroArch uses. It makes it easy to
port games and emulators to a single core backend, such as
    RetroArch.

For the user, this means - more ports to play with, more
crossplatform portability, less worrying about developers having
to reinvent the wheel writing boilerplate UI/port code - so that
they can get busy with writing the emulator/porting the emulator/game.

    WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL?
    ——————-
Right now it’s unique in that it runs the same emulator cores on
multiple systems (such as Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii, etc).

For each emulator ‘core’, RetroArch makes use of a library API that
    we like to call ‘libretro’.

Think of libretro as an interface for emulator and game ports. You
can make a libretro port once and expect the same code to run on all
the platforms that RetroArch supports. It’s designed with simplicity
and ease of use in mind so that the porter can worry about the port
at hand instead of having to wrestle with an obfuscatory API.

The purpose of libretro is to help ease the work of the emulator/game
porter by giving him an API that allows him to target multiple
platforms at once without having to redo any code. He doesn’t have
to worry about writing input/video/audio drivers - all of that is
supplied to him by RetroArch. All he has to do is to have the emulator
port hook into the libretro API and that’s it - we take care of the rest.

    PLAYSTATION3 PORT
    —————-
The PS3 port of RetroArch is the most developed of the two right now.
It has all the features the standalone PS3 emulators had, with the
    addition of:

    - Game-aware shading in every emulator now (*)
    - Real-time rewinding
    - More shader features (motion blurring, etc)
    - Switching between emulator cores seamlessly, and ability to install new libretro cores

Included with RetroArch PS3 are a bunch of shaders - including the
latest versions of the popular xBR shader. It is possible to use two
shaders simultaneously to get the best possible graphical look.

EMULATOR/GAME CORES GBUNDLED WITH PS3 PORT
    ——————————————
The following emulators have been ported to RetroArch and are included
in the first PS3 release of RetroArch:

    - Final Burn Alpha (Arcade - various) [version 0.2.97.26]
    - FCEUmm (Nintendo Entertainment System) [recent SVN version] (*)
    - Gambatte (Game Boy | Super Game Boy | Game Boy Color) [version 0.5.0 WIP]
    - Genesis Plus GX (Sega SG-1000 | Master System | Game Gear | Genesis/Mega Drive) [version 1.6.0] (**)
    - SNES9x Next (Super Nintendo/Super Famicom)
    - VBA Next (Game Boy Advance)
    - Prboom (for playing Doom 1/Doom 2/Ultimate Doom/Final Doom)

All of the emulators listed above are the latest versions currently
available. Most of them have been specifically optimized so that they
will run better on PS3 (some games would not reach fullspeed without these optimizations).

    * This port was previously called FCEU Next.
** This port was previously called Genesis Next.

WHAT EXTENSIONS ARE SUPPORTED BY EACH CORE
    ——————————————

    - Prboom: WAD|wad
    - SNES9x Next: smc|fig|sfc|gd3|gd7|dx2|bsx|swc|zip|SMC|FIG|SFC|BSX|GD3|
    GD7|DX2|SWC
    - Genesis Plus GX: md|smd|bin|gen|zip|MD|SMD|bin|GEN|ZIP|sms|SMS|gg|GG|sg|SG
    - VBA Next: GBA|gba
    - FCEUmm: nes|NES|unif|UNIF
    - Gambatte: gb|gbc|dmg|zip|GB|GBC|DMG|ZIP
    - Final Burn Alpha: zip|ZIP

    ZIP SUPPORT
    ———-
FOR EACH CORE (except for Final Burn Alpha): When you press ‘X’ on a
ZIP file in the File Browser, its contents will be extracted to the
/dev_hdd1/ partition. From there, you can load the ROM and play.

FOR Final Burn Alpha: Selecting a ZIP file from the Filebrowser will
    load that game directly.

What can you expect in the future?
    ———————————-
    - A public release of RetroArch Wii that is on the level of RetroArch
    PS3/RetroArch 360
    - An official Android port of RetroArch (no, no App Store ‘fee’ - ‘free’
as in beer AND as in libre)
    - Port of NxEngine to libretro - runs Cave Story (PC version is already done,
    now for the consoles…)
    - Port of MAME 0.72 to libretro
    - Port of VICE to libretro
    - Port of ScummVM to libretro
    - More emulators, more games that will run on RetroArch
    - Lots of other crazy ideas that might or might not pan out

Last year, Dashhacks opened a git repository, for PS3 developers, but after the site was sold, the repository died, now the admin of the PS3 Dev Wiki defyboy has opened his own repository and you can guarantee that it wont die, to visit it/contribute, go here:

For a few days, the PS3 Dev Wiki was down due to hosting problems and a lot of information seemed to be lost, but thanks to the hard work of the Wiki’s admin defyboy and a backup from a member called TMAnd, only a couple of days work was lost, you can read about it on this thread.

So thank you defyboy and TMAnd for rescuing all those precious edits :)

I would like to point out, that the PS3 Dev Wiki is a community effort, without the work and dedication of a lot of developers and PS3 enthusiasts, the wiki would be quite empty, so if you are doing work on the PS3, keep it documented on the Wiki :)

You can visit the Wiki here:
    PS3 Dev Wiki

I would like to give thanks to euss, deroad, defyboy, Lady Anne Blunt, sandungas and the many other editors who keep the Wiki alive.

We never post PSP News, but this one is quite interesting, developer Sonywiz has updated his PSP Emulator for Windows, here is a quote from the source:

    This version has major improvements:

    • Module loading (this allow more games to run, including some software like PRX Decrypter or LUA Player)
    • Automatical EBOOT decryption. It will decrypt EBOOTs on the fly. This will allow lots and lots of new games to start running. (But still requires some work to get most of them ingame).
    • Note: with those improvements I have noticed lots of games start running, and some more starting like: Princess Crown and Ys The Ark of Napishtim.

    Minor improvements:

    • Now you can drag & drop executable files on the emulator window
    • Implemented bltzal/bltzall required for some games
    • Implemented DXT1
    • Fixed DX3 RB
    • Added lots of new APIs and fixed some of them.
    • Added a new versioning system. Releases now are denoted by the date eg: 20120407, git revision: 959572e63973662303c2dfd80f6fb60eaebb4072, and now also a count revision r256. This is an incremental number that indicates the number of commits to the repository.
