    Firstly, i hate the word jailbreak, but as so many people call hacking the PS3, jailbreaking, that is what i will call it for this guide.
    Secondly, the old guides are outdated and need refreshed.

    (Q) Why Would I Hack/Jailbreak My PS3 ?
    (A) Hacking your PS3, gives you so many new option’s, you will be able to use emulators, homebrew apps and game backups as well as being able to use Linux, after Sony removed the function in firmware 3.21.

    CFW(Custom Firmware)/MFW(Modified Firmware)

    (Q) CFW/MFW Or Dongle ?
    (A) CFW/MFW is the way to go, dongles are dead and you should not be using them.

    (Q) Which PS3 Consoles Can Be Jailbroken
    (A)here is a list taken from the PS3 Dev Wiki
    SKU Models

    or you can take a look at this image:
     photo x4i6shO_zps9f4b8062.jpg

    (Q) Which PS3 Consoles cannot be Jailbroken
    (A) 3K and 4K consoles(Some Slim and all Super Slim)

    (Q) Is there a firmware my PS3 should be on ?
    (A) The most recent Rebug or Rogero seems to be the most desired

    (Q) What Firmwares cannot be hacked yet ?
    (A) Firmwares from 3.56 upwards are un-jailbreakable at the moment, perhaps it will remain that way, or perhaps we will see a break through in the future, only time will tell.

    (Q) How do i install the latest 4xx CFW/MFW
    (A) You should follow these guides:
    [TUT] How to install the latest 4.XX CFW’s
    Nicolas’ MiralaTijera CFW 4.40 NooB Tutorial
    [Video Tutorial] How To Install 4.30 PS3 CFW (From 3.55 CFW)

    (Q) I have found some CFW/MFW on the internet, how do i know it is real ?
    Use this application, it will help you identify a real or fake CFW/MFW:
    PS3 PUP Check+ [MD5 verify] By DEFAULTDNB

    (Q) When i bought my PS3, the firmware was above 3.55/My family member updated my console when i was out :( , how can i have jailbreak my console ?
    (A) You need to downgrade your PS3, this is rather a tedious process, involving soldering several wires to your PS3, but in the future we will have solderless models of these products, for information on how to downgrade, check these threads:
    Ultimate Fool Proof Guide: Ps3 Hardware Downgrading
    [Tutorial] E3 Flasher: Fast Swap Dual Guide For All OFW/CFW

    Q.) Can 4.xx CFW be installed on 4.xx OFW ?
    A.) NO, NO and NO, you need to DOWNGRADE to a 3.55 Firmware.

    Q.) Can i Software Downgrade from 4.xx OFW ?
    A.) NO, at the moment you MUST, use a Hardware Flasher, like Progskeet or E3, if you are comfortable with soldering, then Progskeet is the recommended device.

    Q.) Can i brick my PS3 installing a 4.xx CFW ?
    A.) Yes, as with all OFW’s or CFW’s you have a chance of bricking, with CFW’s your chances of bricking become a lot higher, when you dont read.

    Q.) Can i brick my PS3 by downgrading ?
    A.) Of course you can, but most bricks occur due to user error.

    Q.) Who is to blame for any bricks ?
    A.) You as the user are, most bricks are down to user error, take your time to read, take your time to understand, take all the time possible and have some patience, it will pay off and be rewarding in the end.

    Q.) I want to downgrade my PS3, but im either too afraid or i have zero soldering skills, can someone do it for me ?
    A.) Well doing something yourself, is always rewarding, but if you don’t have the confidence, you don’t have the confidence, so you can ask anyone from the trusted downgraders thread:
    Trusted PS3 Downgrade Providers

    Future Software Methods

    Q.) Will there ever be a method to upgrade from straight from 4.xx OFW to 4.xx CFW ?
    A.) We are but mere mortals, we are not psychic, the only advice that one can give you is, be patient and wait until the PlayStation 4 is released.

    Q.) Will there ever be a method to Software Downgrade from 4.xx ?
    A.) We are but mere mortals, we are not psychic, the only advice that one can give you is, be patient and wait until the PlayStation 4 is released.

    (Q) Ok so i have CFW installed, how do i run homebrew ?
    (A) In the game section, you will see “Install Package Files”, you will be able to install all your homebrew and backup managers from there, just a note though, the PKG files that you are installing, need to be on the root of your FAT32 formatted thumbdrive/external HDD.

    (Q) I need a backup manager, what should i use
    Iris Manager

    Storage Options

    (Q) What are my storage options for backing up games(This really 0nly applies to Fat PS3′s) ?

    (A.1) You can backups certain games to CD/DVD/BD disc’s, read here for more information.
    (A.2) You can install games on the PS3′s internal HDD or use an External USB HDD, which needs to be formatted to FAT32, you can also use a FAT32 USB Thumb Drive, note that with FAT32 you are limited to games with single files under 4GB, if you prefer all your games to be on the internal HDD, you can get up to 1TB 2.5? HDD, or you can use the Xecuter PS3 HDXT method and have your internal HDD on the outside of the machine, the benefit of this, is that you can use 3.5? Sata and IDE HDD’s as internal storage.

    Some more PS3 HDD Information submitted by ieder-zijn-meis(Thanks again)
    - maximum height is 9,5mm (many 2.5? drives above 640GB are too high too fit inside)
    - maximum PS3 filesystem is 1TB (512KB block size)
    - maximum FAT32 theoretical size is 8TB, practical limit on the PS3 is 2TB
    - 7200rpm can be used, as well as Flashdrives (although the 1/5th lower loadingtime of GTA5 can be considered too low to justify the higher pricetag of SATA Flashdrives.
    - SATAII-300 can be used, although it will work on SATA1-150 speed interface.
    - If using external 3.5? drives hooked up to the internal SATA, you’ll need an external powersupply (some drivebays include them).
    - If on low budget or you like DIY: use a normal extension (male to female) SATA cable (and make sure it doesn’t get loose) and recycle the case + powersupply of an external USB harddisk (without using the USB connection/conversion).
    - Don’t use RAID or SAN drives with (e)SATA interface, just a plain single drive with a bare SATA connector (many controllers don’t work without drivers/software).
    - Games can be hardcoded for BluRay speeds (9MB/s) so sticking a 85~220MB/s harddrive inside will not speedup everything/allways (but most do).
    - If you plan on exchanging the drive, download the full PUP of your FW you are using and put it on an USB Mass Storage Device formatted with FAT32 in PS3UPDATEPS3UPDAT.PUP and disconnect the LAN before re powering the PS3 (or you’ll bound to end up with the latest (3.55 now) unjailbreakable/undowngradable version).
    - Use a good fitting X screwdriver, the screws fitted to the HD<>tray are made of very soft aluminum.

    Here is a tutorial, by forum member Invi, on how to an External IDE HDD Case and use it as Internal Storage:
    HowTo: Use an external IDE HDD Case to connect an Internal 3,5″ Sata HDD as PS3 HDD.

    An image of the Xecuter PS3 HDXT.

    Videos of different HDD expansion options.

    (Q) As stated above, 3K and 4K consoles cannot be jailbroken, so am i out of luck as far as Homebrew and Backups are concerned ?
    (A) No, there are a a few devices that will help you play backups and homebrew, they are called ODDE’s, the name of these ODDE’s are E3, 3K3Y and Cobra, you can find information here:
    3K3Y ODDE all you need to know: Info/links/etc
    Cobra ODE Installation Tutorial 3XXX and 25XX Series
    [Pros/Cons]: Cobra and 3K3Y
    My advise is to find a machine that you can downgrade, spend your money on this before wasting money on an ODDE

    multiMAN 04.18.00 has been released. Deank has added support for downloadable packages (in the WEB column) and rewrote some of the code, so this version notably enhances the speed of the app.

    multiMAN 04.18.00 is available for online update (and also in the WEB column)

    multiMAN ver 04.18.00 (20130105).zip (29.38MB)

    The zip includes CEX and DEX updates and the BASE STEALTH. If you download the zip from the Web column you can ‘unzip’ it via mmOS from /dev_hdd0/packages.

    * Added support for downloadable packages/files in the Web column
    * Fixed some minor issues (rename/delete) when using “Game Settings” menu (after using L1/R1 to switch games)
    * Reworked some core functions and improved mM’s performance even more
    * Added back “Install Package Files Method” to Settings for 4.30 firmwares
    * Removed pulsing of the currently selected entry (works better with some fonts)
    * “Game Settings” menu now loads faster
    * If the background game-verification didn’t complete and you had to wait for “Verifying…” it will now happen only once per game. The result of the verification is now remembered

    I rewrote and optimized a lot of functions in this version and you will notice the difference.

    [Update] BASE & FULL Version:

    multiMAN ver 04.18.00 BASE (20130106).zip (104MB)
    (also available for download via mM’s Web column)

    * multiMAN ver 04.18.00 BASE DEX (20130106).pkg
    * multiMAN ver 04.18.00 BASE CEX STEALTH (20130105).zip

    * bdRESET4.pkg
    * gameDATA4.pkg
    * installPKG [SingStar Replacement].pkg
    * installPKG.pkg
    * lastGAME41.pkg
    * Showtime 04.01.307 [CEX].pkg
    * Showtime 04.01.307 [DEX].pkg
    * stDISC3.pkg

    * c2d
    * genGP3
    * ps3netsrv
    * rcp_bdemu
    * split4G

    p.s. If you download from the WEB column you can go to mmOS and browse to /dev_hdd0/packages and double-click the .zip file. It will be unzipped and you can install the desired version by double-clicking the .pkg.

    p.s.2 Both BASE and FULL include AIOMOD.BIN so if you want to get rid of it - delete it like you did before.

    multiMAN ver 04.18.00 FULL (20130106).zip (299MB)

    * multiMAN ver 04.18.00 FULL CEX (20130106).pkg

    DeanK has released multiMAN 04.17.04. There is now also a BARE version (only 3.8MB) available for those that complained about the size of multiMAN.

    multiMAN 04.17.04 update is available online (cex/dex/stealth)

    multiMAN ver 04.17.04 UPD CEX (20121226).pkg (1.76MB)

    * Visual improvements
    * Added SD/MS/CF entries in Retro
    * Fade-in for game backgrounds
    * Some other improvements related to copying/scanning/verifying/etc
    * multiMAN “minimal”/”bare” version available (read below)

    Few weeks ago some people requested a ‘minimalistic’ version of multiMAN. For them I created this package:

    multiMAN ver 04.17.04 BARE CEX (20121226) (only 3.8MB)

    This is a skinned down version (BARE). It can be installed on any PS3 without the need of a previous mM installation. It is like a “base” but the differences are:

    * Simple theme (2MB) (no theme music)
    * No GUI translations (English only)
    * No user fonts (only system fonts will be used)
    * No PS1/PS2/PSP names/IDs database (no game names will be displayed)
    * AIOMOD not included (old BD-Mirror method for USB games will be used on 4.21+CFWs)

    Do not use it unless you’re the one who asked for it. BARE can be installed on any firmware for normal users who don’t really need any of the listed above features. Of course NONE of these features are present in other BUMs so everyone should be happy. It can be installed on top of your current mM if you wish to test it (you will not notice much difference, because you already have the fonts/translations/aiomod/themes installed).

    This bare version is suitable for:

    * English speaking users
    * All 3.41/3.55 (non Cobra/TB) firmwares
    * All 4.21+ firmwares (disc may be required when booting bd-mirror USB games if AIOMOD.BIN is not present)
    * Weeners who complain all the time that 130MB is too much for a stupid PS3 homebrew like mM

    After some time of silence @deank comes back with a nice update release
    Here you have the quote from the original post:

    Originally Posted by deank

    multiMAN ver 04.15.00 UPD CEX (20121212).rar (3.21MB) (mM+ps3netsrv/GUI+mmRAS+installPKG)

    This is only an UPDATE version (you need 04.14.00/04.15.00 BASE or FULL installed). 04.15.00 BASE/FULL links may be available later.

    * Updated PC application “ps3netsrv” to support fast folder-data retrieval
    * Greatly improved loading of remote /net_host folders (up to 4096 entries in mmOS and 2048 in other modes)
    * Greatly improved loading of remote Retro ROMs folders with covers
    * Added support to access remote PS3 system in mmOS or in game modes via /net_host
    - You can access all data of a remote PS3 to view/play photo/music/video files, transfer files/folders (and load ISO games/movies PS3/PSX/DVD/BD if used with Cobra CFW)
    * Added option in “Settings” - “Connect to Another PS3″ - it allows full remote control (screen/pad) of another PS3 running multiMAN 04.15.00 and later
    * Added option in “Settings” - “Remote Access Permissions” (Disable/Files/Screen/Full) to restrict remote connnections to your PS3
    * Added support for mmRAS - PC application by Aldo (aldostools) which allows remote access to your PS3 (screen/pad) while running multiMAN
    * Screenshot feature in multiMAN (START+R2) will now save screens as JPEG.

    The key features of this release:

    * The improved PC ps3netsrv application allows much faster access speeds when retrieving data from folders in mmOS or when browsing photo/music/video/ROMs from remote /net_host. You can now browse a remote folder with roms+covers and it takes a fraction of the time it took before.

    * The Remote Access feature allows you to connect to another PS3 anywhere in the world (be it in the other room or across the country) and copy files/folders, play Retro ROMs, view photos and play music and video files (after caching)

    * The Remote Access Control (PS3) feature allows you to connect to another PS3 running multiMAN and view its screen and control it with your pad. It allows you to minimize the current session and work with your own PS3 (to transfer files to the remote PS3 for example) and then return to the other PS3.

    * The Remote Access Control (PC) feature via aldostools mmRAS client allows you to connect to your PS3 (or any other PS3 around the world running multiMAN) from your PC. You can change the encoding quality of the picture, take screenshots in JPG (PrintScreen button) and control the PS3 with your keyboard and mouse. Click the [?] button for more information of the keyboard mappings.

    * The option in “Settings” (Remote Access Permissions) allows you to configure the access to your PS3. You can completely “Disable” it, you can allow remote connections only to access your “Files”, you can restrict it only to remote control “Screen” or allow “Full” access for files and screen control.

    * The Remote Access Control provides 960×540 resolution (it doesn’t depend on the remote PS3 resolution). The best results/quality and fastest response is achieved when server PS3 is running in 1920×1080.

    * To be able to use these features you have to configure your remote peers in “Settings” -> “Network Servers”.

    * Any configured /net_host can be used for file access (PC and PS3) and for remote control (PS3)
    * If you are connecting to a PC you must have ps3netsrv application running on the PC side

    * If you wish to restrict access to your PS3 - change the setting in “Remote Access Permissions”

    * If you wish to connect to another PS3 configured as /net_host - use the “Connect to Another PS3″ function in “Settings”

    While connected to another PS3 you can ‘minimize’ the connection and work with your own PS3 and then resume the remote control. You will see the live minimized remote screen in the lower corner. To switch between local/remote control use [START]+[SQUARE]. To terminate a connection to a remote PS3 use [START]+[CIRCLE]. All other buttons you press will be sent to the remote PS3.

    MANY thanks to @aldostools for creating the PC application to connect to a remote-control-enabled PS3.

    The following text is from deank, the developer of multiMAN. He claims in multiMAN version 04.15.00 it is possible to connect 2 PS3′s (anywhere in the world) and copy or share data without a USB drive or PC.

    Here is something some of you may find useful :)

    Some of you used “Network Servers” option in “Settings” to connect to a PC running ps3netsrv to copy files, play ROMs, play music or view pictures.

    Now it is possible to connect to ANOTHER PS3 (running mM 04.15.00) be it in your local LAN or anywhere in the world.

    You can copy/share data with another PS3 if the ‘server’ PS3 is running mM 04.15.00 and the ‘client’ PS3 can be using mM 04.00.00 or later.

    You can backup games directly from the BD Disc of the server PS3, view photos, play music, install PKG files, copy games, access all devices connected to the server PS3, if you’re on cobra cfw you can even play PS1/PS3 games or Blu-ray/DVD movies stored on the server PS3.

    You can transfer game backups, movies and data from one PS3 to another without a USB drive or PC.

    All in all - you can transfer/share data between to PS3s on CFW via the /net_host feature of multiMAN.

    deank has released multiMAN version 04.13.00 and a Standalone ‘Install Package Files’ Application. According to him this app will be preinstalled in an upcoming Rogero custom firmware.

    install package files

    Install Package Files.pkg (491.36KB)

    This is a small handy tool for installing PKG files via the “bubble”/PSN method. It may be handy for Rogero 4.30CFW ver. 2.00 users. Rogero is preparing a firmware version which will have it ‘build-in’ in /dev_flash so you won’t need multiMAN and you can’t break/delete it, since it will appear in [/app_home] when you boot the PS3 and will come preinstalled.

    It comes with background running FTP server and /dev_blind mounted (for write access to /dev_flash).

    Also online is mM 04.13.00 with a fix for Hermes payload for Rogero 4.30CFW v2:

    * Fixed issue with Hermes payload on 4.30CEX Rogero ver 2.00
    - 4+GB split files caching from USB and “Ext. Game Data” game option now work
    * Added standalone application “* Install Package Files”
    - RELOAD.SELF from the application can be used in other homebrew tools to install PKG files via the bubble-method
    - Install Package Files app works on all firmwares

    stDISC and gameDATA apps will be available later for Rogero 4.30CFW v2.

    And once again deank has released an update for multiMAN. This version, 04.11.13, fixes the error that occurs if no update is installed for 04.20 - 04.31 games. You can update within multiMAN or download the package at the links below.

    ● Added check for EBOOT.BIN firmware version (offset 0×428) and prompt to ‘fix’ the version to your current one.

    —> This will fix 80010009 errors for 04.20-04.31 games without updates if EBOOT.BIN is encrypted with 4.20/0x1C key revision or lower.

    —> Tested NFS:MW on 4.21REX without installing the 01.01 update for the game.

    —> It will probably fix errors on Rogero’s 4.30CFW if 4.35 games are released encrypted with 4.30 keys.

    deank has updated multiMAN to 4.10.00 to help out REBUG REX users. Seems also there is a new feature called “Dummy_BDEMU” which will help users with a broken blu ray drive, but working logic board to play backups on their MFW ps3.

    multiMAN ver 04.10.00 BASE CEX (20121103).rar (26.42MB)

    * Added full support for 4.21REX (REBUG) firmware
    * Added support for 4.21REX in DEX full mode (DEX flash + DEX lv2 kernel)
    * Added support for PS1 disc backups for 4.21REX CFW in DEX/DEX mode
    * Added support for direct-disc-access for 4.21REX CFW in DEX/DEX mode (data CD/DVD/BD discs)
    * Added support for flashing 256MB NAND *.EID0.NANDBIN backups
    * Users with broken BD drives can use 4.21REX in DEX mode with fake BDEMU stick/image for 100% game compatibility

    IMPORTANT NOTE: If you’re using DEX mode in 4.21REX, use this CEX version of mM (do not install the reguar DEX mM which is only for official dex firmwares).

    This package also includes:

    * Rebug Toolbox 02.00.00
    * c2d + openssl
    * DUMMY_BDEMU.rar

    About DUMMY_BDEMU:

    It is to help users with broken BD-ROM drives (which have a working logic board and married to the PS3). A lot of games have issues when started from /app_home or using “Direct Boot”, that’s why this is the BEST solution for such users. You will have to be on 4.21CFW REBUG (REX) with DEX Target ID flash and DEX LV2 Kernel (full DEX MODE).

    Here is the readme:

    If you do not want to waste a whole USB HDD you can use a
    small 512MB USB STICK to emulate your broken BD-ROM.

    * PC and PS3
    * USB stick/drive (512MB minimum size)
    * Disc Image Generator Software (ps3gen)
    * PLAYSTATION3.iso Dummy BDEMU image
    * 4.21CFW REBUG (REX) operating in DEX mode with DEX lv2_kernel (FULL DEX MODE)

    * Connect a USB HDD to be used for BDEMU
    * Start “Disc Image Generator for Playstation3″ (ps3gen)
    * Click “Show” button in the top right-hand corner
    * Click “Select File…” button
    * Locate and select “PLAYSTATION3.iso” provided in this archive
    * Click “Save / Emu …” button
    * Select “Write Image to BD Emulator HDD”
    * Select your BDEMU USB HDD
    * Pick a slot from the list and click “Write Image”

    On your PS3 with 4.21REX CFW and multiMAN 04.10.00 installed:

    * Install “Rebug Toolbox 02.00.00″ and launch it
    * In DEX/CEX: Flash your DEX EID0 NOR/NAND file (DEX-FLASH.EID0.NORBIN or DEX-FLASH.EID0.NANDBIN file on /dev_usb000 stick)
    * Quit Toolbox and reboot your PS3
    * In XMB “Settings” go to “Debug Settings” and set “Blu-ray Disc Access” option to “BD Emulator (USB)”
    * Turn off your PS3
    * Connect the BDEMU USB HDD drive/stick to the right-most port (/dev_usb000) - the port closest to the BD-ROM drive
    * Turn on your PS3

    * You should see “PLAYSTATION(R)3″ Game Disc mounted in XMB Game column
    * Start multiMAN 04.10.00+, load a game from internal HDD or external USB HDD connected to another port. Do not unplug the BDEMU USB drive.

    * Start your game from the Disc Icon in XMB.
