Well it seems Sony is releasing yet another useless firmware for the PS3, i wonder what it blocks this time, here is a quote from the source:

Later today, the next system software update for PS3 (version 4.50) will be available. We’ve added some great features and improvements to make downloading system updates and Web Store purchases more convenient for all PSN users. In addition, we’ve made it easier to move games, movies and other content from your PS3 to PS Vita with wi-fi data transfer.

Check out some of the new enhancements you’ll find when you update your PS3 to version 4.50:

    • Auto download of system software updates has been expanded to support all PSN users.
    • Auto download support of purchases made on the Web Store will be made available to all PSN users.
    • New options for trophy privacy settings allow users to set which trophies are visible.
    • Data can now be transferred from PS3 to PS Vita using wi-fi and ethernet connection.

Firstly, i hate the word jailbreak, but as so many people call hacking the PS3, jailbreaking, that is what i will call it for this guide.
Secondly, the old guides are outdated and need refreshed.

     photo dogkihjodiughjoidhgjdotghgjkodgfhj_zpsd075b837.png

    (Q) Why Would I Hack/Jailbreak My PS3 ?
    (A) Hacking your PS3, gives you so many new option’s, you will be able to use emulators, homebrew apps and game backups as well as being able to use Linux, after Sony removed the function in firmware 3.21.

    CFW(Custom Firmware)/MFW(Modified Firmware)

    (Q) CFW/MFW Or Dongle ?
    (A) CFW/MFW is the way to go, dongles are dead and you should not be using them.

    (Q) Which PS3 Consoles Can Be Jailbroken
(A)here is a list taken from the PS3 Dev Wiki
    SKU Models

or you can take a look at this image:
     photo x4i6shO_zps9f4b8062.jpg

    (Q) Which PS3 Consoles cannot be Jailbroken
    (A) 3K and 4K consoles(Some Slim and all Super Slim)

    (Q) Is there a firmware my PS3 should be on ?
    (A) The most recent Rebug or Rogero seems to be the most desired

    (Q) What Firmwares cannot be hacked yet ?
    (A) Firmwares from 3.56 upwards are un-jailbreakable at the moment, perhaps it will remain that way, or perhaps we will see a break through in the future, only time will tell.

    (Q) How do i install the latest 4xx CFW/MFW
    (A) You should follow these guides:
[TUT] How to install the latest 4.XX CFW’s
Nicolas’ MiralaTijera CFW 4.40 NooB Tutorial
[Video Tutorial] How To Install 4.30 PS3 CFW (From 3.55 CFW)

    (Q) I have found some CFW/MFW on the internet, how do i know it is real ?
Use this application, it will help you identify a real or fake CFW/MFW:
    PS3 PUP Check+ [MD5 verify] By DEFAULTDNB

    (Q) When i bought my PS3, the firmware was above 3.55/My family member updated my console when i was out :( , how can i have jailbreak my console ?
    (A) You need to downgrade your PS3, this is rather a tedious process, involving soldering several wires to your PS3, but in the future we will have solderless models of these products, for information on how to downgrade, check these threads:
Ultimate Fool Proof Guide: Ps3 Hardware Downgrading
[Tutorial] E3 Flasher: Fast Swap Dual Guide For All OFW/CFW

Q.) Can 4.xx CFW be installed on 4.xx OFW ?
A.) NO, NO and NO, you need to DOWNGRADE to a 3.55 Firmware.

    Q.) Can i Software Downgrade from 4.xx OFW ?
A.) NO, at the moment you MUST, use a Hardware Flasher, like Progskeet or E3, if you are comfortable with soldering, then Progskeet is the recommended device.

    Q.) Can i brick my PS3 installing a 4.xx CFW ?
A.) Yes, as with all OFW’s or CFW’s you have a chance of bricking, with CFW’s your chances of bricking become a lot higher, when you dont read.

    Q.) Can i brick my PS3 by downgrading ?
A.) Of course you can, but most bricks occur due to user error.

Q.) Who is to blame for any bricks ?
A.) You as the user are, most bricks are down to user error, take your time to read, take your time to understand, take all the time possible and have some patience, it will pay off and be rewarding in the end.

Q.) I want to downgrade my PS3, but im either too afraid or i have zero soldering skills, can someone do it for me ?
A.) Well doing something yourself, is always rewarding, but if you don’t have the confidence, you don’t have the confidence, so you can ask anyone from the trusted downgraders thread:
    Trusted PS3 Downgrade Providers

    Future Software Methods

Q.) Will there ever be a method to upgrade from straight from 4.xx OFW to 4.xx CFW ?
A.) We are but mere mortals, we are not psychic, the only advice that one can give you is, be patient and wait until the PlayStation 4 is released.

Q.) Will there ever be a method to Software Downgrade from 4.xx ?
A.) We are but mere mortals, we are not psychic, the only advice that one can give you is, be patient and wait until the PlayStation 4 is released.

    (Q) Ok so i have CFW installed, how do i run homebrew ?
    (A) In the game section, you will see “Install Package Files”, you will be able to install all your homebrew and backup managers from there, just a note though, the PKG files that you are installing, need to be on the root of your FAT32 formatted thumbdrive/external HDD.

    (Q) I need a backup manager, what should i use
    Iris Manager

    Storage Options

    (Q) What are my storage options for backing up games(This really 0nly applies to Fat PS3′s) ?

(A.1) You can backups certain games to CD/DVD/BD disc’s, read here for more information.
(A.2) You can install games on the PS3′s internal HDD or use an External USB HDD, which needs to be formatted to FAT32, you can also use a FAT32 USB Thumb Drive, note that with FAT32 you are limited to games with single files under 4GB, if you prefer all your games to be on the internal HDD, you can get up to 1TB 2.5? HDD, or you can use the Xecuter PS3 HDXT method and have your internal HDD on the outside of the machine, the benefit of this, is that you can use 3.5? Sata and IDE HDD’s as internal storage.

Some more PS3 HDD Information submitted by ieder-zijn-meis(Thanks again)
    - maximum height is 9,5mm (many 2.5? drives above 640GB are too high too fit inside)
    - maximum PS3 filesystem is 1TB (512KB block size)
    - maximum FAT32 theoretical size is 8TB, practical limit on the PS3 is 2TB
    - 7200rpm can be used, as well as Flashdrives (although the 1/5th lower loadingtime of GTA5 can be considered too low to justify the higher pricetag of SATA Flashdrives.
    - SATAII-300 can be used, although it will work on SATA1-150 speed interface.
    - If using external 3.5? drives hooked up to the internal SATA, you’ll need an external powersupply (some drivebays include them).
    - If on low budget or you like DIY: use a normal extension (male to female) SATA cable (and make sure it doesn’t get loose) and recycle the case + powersupply of an external USB harddisk (without using the USB connection/conversion).
    - Don’t use RAID or SAN drives with (e)SATA interface, just a plain single drive with a bare SATA connector (many controllers don’t work without drivers/software).
    - Games can be hardcoded for BluRay speeds (9MB/s) so sticking a 85~220MB/s harddrive inside will not speedup everything/allways (but most do).
    - If you plan on exchanging the drive, download the full PUP of your FW you are using and put it on an USB Mass Storage Device formatted with FAT32 in PS3UPDATEPS3UPDAT.PUP and disconnect the LAN before re powering the PS3 (or you’ll bound to end up with the latest (3.55 now) unjailbreakable/undowngradable version).
    - Use a good fitting X screwdriver, the screws fitted to the HD<>tray are made of very soft aluminum.

Here is a tutorial, by forum member Invi, on how to an External IDE HDD Case and use it as Internal Storage:
HowTo: Use an external IDE HDD Case to connect an Internal 3,5″ Sata HDD as PS3 HDD.

An image of the Xecuter PS3 HDXT.

Videos of different HDD expansion options.

    (Q) As stated above, 3K and 4K consoles cannot be jailbroken, so am i out of luck as far as Homebrew and Backups are concerned ?
    (A) No, there are a a few devices that will help you play backups and homebrew, they are called ODDE’s, the name of these ODDE’s are E3, 3K3Y and Cobra, you can find information here:
3K3Y ODDE all you need to know: Info/links/etc
Cobra ODE Installation Tutorial 3XXX and 25XX Series

My advise is to find a machine that you can downgrade, spend your money on this before wasting money on an ODDE

PlayStation Plus is quite popular on the PS3, but there are many people that have not adopted the service, unfortunately with the upcoming release of the PS4, you will be forced to subscribe to the service, if you want to play online on your favourite Call Of Duty game or any other popular online game, Sony introduced this paywall, in what they claim is to support the servers
So those of you who don’t have the service, probably wonder what else it offers apart from a forced pay wall, so in this article, i will explain what PS+ offers and why its a great service.

     photo ps4plus_zpsb87713bc.jpg

    PS Plus

PS+ just like the normal PS Store, is different per region, EU will have games that the US/Canada wont have and vice versa, here are the prices for a yerly subscription:

    • US/Canada - $49.99(US)
    • UK - £39.99
    • EU - €49.99

I am a UK owner of the PS3, but my account is US, here is an idea of why, here are the differences in currencies,
    $49.99(US) = £32.09 and €37.34.
So if you aren’t interested in add-ons for your UK/EU games, owning a US account, is the sensible route, this definitely was the case three years or more when I created my US account, note that if you are a UK/EU PS3 owner and buy add ons a lot for your games, then the US route wont be the best idea for you.

So what Does PS Plus Offer ?

    • Instant Game Collection - This is where you get a free PS3 game per month, a free PS Vita game every two months(Here is a list of games from that collection).
    • Discounts - This is where you get discounts on games, DLC, themes etc, exclusively to PS+ customers, you can get up to 75% of a purchase.
    • Exclusive Access - This is where you get early access to betas.
    • Online Game Save Storage - This option lets you automatically upload your games saves to an online cloud service provided by Sony.
    • Automatic Updates - This allows you to set your console to automatically update the System Software and Game Updates.
    • Full Game Trials - You can download a full game and play it for a maximum of 60 minutes.

    • I would say that the only con, is that the free games are not technically free, they are more of a long term rented game, as in you can own and play the game, for as long as you keep up your PS+ subscription, if at any time you stop subscribing to PS+, you will no longer be able to play these games.

    How Do I Get PS+ ?

There are many ways to get PS+, the first thing you will need to do is add credit for the exact amount, you can do so the following ways:

    • Use a Credit/Debit card.
    • Buy a PlayStation Network card from a retail store.
    • Ask a friend to buy you a card/add credit to your account(handy if you are the UK/EU console owner using a US account).
    • Use websites that sell PSN cards, like PC Game Supply, they take the card, scratch it and email you a photo of the code(handy if you are the UK/EU console owner using a US account).

You can also buy cards that will give you a year subscription to PS+, instead of adding credit to your account.

PlayStation is expanding its streaming footprint one piledriver at a time with the new Live Events Viewer. Announced at E3 and available today, the app will let you buy and watch pay-per-view events — starting with this Sunday’s WWE SummerSlam — directly from your PS3 without the need for a cable subscription. Sony is promising that new programming will be available on a weekly basis and that there will be free content in addition to PPVs, too. All that’s available right now are UFC and WWE specials, but according to the US PlayStation Blog, concerts, races and “other entertainment events” are en route. You could also get your scripted and unscripted fisticuffs fix on the Xbox 360, but you need an active Xbox Live Gold subscription to use them.

A nice little addition, to the PS3 app list, for all you wraaaaastling fans :)

    Thanks @simonbuck :)

Its been a while since we have seen a new DEX firmware since the last 4.30 release, and today DEX firmware 4.41 has surfaced thanks to @Akela for the news.

The Firmware has been verified and the MD5 hash is: 62ac9ddd2659678e064ceb767dc9a729

    PlayStation(R)3 System Software Update 441.001
Copyright (C) 2013 Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
    All Rights Reserved.
This package includes the system software update data for
    PlayStation(R)3 debugging station.

Do *NOT* update from versions below 0.96 directly to this
flash. Instead, update from earlier versions to version 0.96, then
update to this version. Failure to update to 0.96 prior to applying
this flash may render your hardware inoperable. Such hardware must
be returned to SCE for repair.

Please update the flash memory with a file included in
this package. Instructions for the update is the same
as an update for a reference tool.

The following storage media can be used.
    - A USB mass-storage device with a capacity of at least
256 MB, which can be connected to any of the USB connectors
    on the debugging station

Perform the following steps on the host computer:
    - Make a directory named PS3 in the root directory of the
storage medium, and then make a sub-directory UPDATE in it.
    - Copy the update data to the created PS3UPDATE directory
    in the medium.
    - Remove the “.NNN.0xx” portion from the file name (to
    rename it to PS3UPDAT.PUP).

Insert the storage medium that contains the update data,
and then select and launch the “System Update” in the GUI
menu. Select “Update via Storage Media” for “Select an
update method”. Follow the instructions shown on the screen
    from then on.

    Contents of This Package
    :Update Data

    Changes in Release 441.001
    <System Software (GUI)>
    - The update data for debugging station has been updated
at the same timing as the release of the system software 4.41.
This update does not affect titles.
Also, there is no change in the system software GUI.

    [Known Issues/Restrictions]
<Check menu in the Game column>
    - Validation of a media or the file system itself cannot be performed
from the Check menu in the Game column.

When submitting a master disc, make sure to verify the disc that no error
is present using the Disc Image Generator for PlayStation(R)3 or
the Disc Image Checker for PlayStation(R)3.

    - When performing the check from the Check menu in the Game column,
if the number of result files exceeds approximately 80 to 100 depending
on each check item, the file entries of the root directory in the USB
mass storage run out and the subsequent check result files may no
    longer be stored.
In such case, move the check result files to another directory.

    - The system software of the debugging station can be now downgraded
    to 4.41.
Using this update data, you can also downgrade the system software
version 4.X0 or later to 4.41.

Please refer to “5 Updating Flash Memory -> Downgrading the Flash Memory”
of the “Reference Tool Software Setup Guide” document for more details
    on downgrading the Flash memory.

Grimm and Berion have updated their popular CFW checking program, to include more CEX and the newer DEX firmwares, here is a quote from the source:

    - added all CEX CFW up to 4.30
    - added all DEX CFW
    - added missing DEX OFW
    - added missing CEX OFW
    - added missing Glevand’s CFW 3.55 (included test releases)
    - added missing Rogero’s CFW 3.55
    - added some missing checksums for some firmwares
    - old, translated databases are moved to ./outdated folder

    - add missing CEX OFW (the ones from BD-ROM)
    - add missing SEX OFW

Here are a couple of quotes from the Read Me:

Custom Firmware Validator is a program designed mainly for verifying downloaded or manually patched firmwares for PS3. This application compares checksums from the database with those which are being calculated on the currently open file. If at least one would match, the following things will appear: the name of the firmware and its short description, the option to show the list of additional functions and the option to visit the author’s web page, also one could copy a file onto USB with the proper directory structure and its name (PS3, PSP, PSV).

    Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: I still don’t understand what this program do!
A: In other simpler words, using CFV:
    - You cannot flash your console by fake firmware. In first days of CFW on PS3, many bastards linked higher OFW as CFW and some people have been fooled by them, ending with non software downgradable OFW. This application protect you from such situation.
    - You cannot misleading one CFW with another, modified by someone else than author of this CFW. This application gave you confidence that scaned CFW is the release CFW, not modified by someone else.
    - You can transfer OFW/CFW directly to your USB device. It even detect if file system is FAT32 but not only! Also detect if this FAT32 is on MBR (which is only one support by PS3) or GPT and other not supported table format.
    - You can go to authors webpage if it’s linked in database.
    - You can take more user friendly information about firmware (like properly working Trophy system, Cinavia DRM patched, protecting from ACT.DAT deleting etc.).

Q: How many fw CFV recognize?
A: Custom Firmware Validator support all CEX OFWs, all leaked SEX, DEX, DECR and all known to us CFWs (more than 50). This give us support for ~200 firmwares!

Q: Do you plan to make databases updates?
A: Yes, but only the one for PS3. In this aspect we count on the community’s involvement. ;]

Tempest_Fire on the Official US PlayStaion forum has posted some information on a Firmware update tonight, here is a quote from the source:

    Hi everyone,

I’m posting this message to inform you that there will be a minor firmware update (v.4.31) released on the evening of Monday, October 29th

There will not be PlayStation Network maintenance during this time; online play and access to apps will not be affected during the release of this update.

This is not a mandatory update. However, we suggest you keep your systems updated with the latest firmware, as these updates further improve overall system stability and help provide you with the best online entertainment experience possible.

To update to v.4.31, select Settings from your Xross Media Bar (XMB)  > System Update > Update via Internet and then follow the on-screen instructions.

More information about PlayStation system updates can be found here: http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/

Joystick_Warrior a member of Staff on the official US PlayStation forums has reported of problems with Sony’s latest firmware release, here is what he states in his post:

Hey everyone. We’ve been noticing quite a bit of feedback from people having issues with the new 4.25 update. We wanted to collect some data from everyone so we can better understand the issues that have come up. If you can go ahead and post this info it would be very helpful for us:

    • Your PS3 Model, Hard drive size (phat/slim, GB size, default/custom HDD)
    • Internet connection (wired/wireless)
    • Did you update to 4.25 from version 4.20 or 4.21 (4.21 was an optional update that was not required)

If you guys have any other info you want to give, please do as any details could help us out in narrowing down the problems. Thanks everyone!

Various members responded and here are some of there posts:

i have the slim, just 160,default. was fine until 4.25 update. im now falling through map floors and going through doorways 3 or 4 times . ive tryed wired and wireless same same. i have a 30 mb internet connection ive had my cable company here to make sure it was not an internet issue.definatly the 4.25 update. i did a reformat last night no change.i play bf3 u see . nice for the exX2 event this weekend. maybe we could just go back to the older version until the problem is fixed.

I have a 120GB slim. Wireless internet, and I had whatever the newest firmware before this update was. My PS3 is hard shutting off on Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and I don’t know if this new firmware is to blame. I got a flashing red light when this happened that stopped blinking after I hit the power button. I was able to eject the disc. Scared to play my system right now.

I have the 60gb big PS3 and I was playing fine until I downloaded the new firmware and than when it was done installing and my ps3 restarted I cant get the tv to recognize the ps3 now and my controller dont work on it. The new update broke my ps3 i think.

Hey.    I too am being negatively affected by the 4.25 update. My PS3′s connection to the Playstation Network has failed to operate correctly, entirely since the update despite my internet connection itself being fine and working as always.

    • Slim Model. 160GB - Default Drive
    • Wireless Internet Connection.  ( NOTE: As said in previous posts I have made regarding this issue. My connection was fine until the 4.25 Update. )
    • Updated from 4.20

This update has entirely destroyed my PS3′s Connection to PSN. All games are unplayable online since the update, logging in is far more difficult than it ever has been.

    Please fix this issue.

    PS3 80 gig

wireless: downloads up to 70 mb and uploads up to 35mb

had latest update before updating last night

now TV won’t recognize my PS3 is connected; tried various ways to correct this; not a cable thing, it’s an update thing

    I have a Slim 320G.  I updated from 4.21.  I use WiFi.

After the update the system rebooted.  The XMB appeared but everything was going slowly.  Then my controllers were not working.  I could not power off the system by holding the power button and had to unplug the power cord.  After that it worked well.

Now those are only some of the qoutes on the first page, there are 9+ pages of replies

A very kind person has released Firmware 4.21 for Dex machines, here is a quote from the PS3 Dev Wiki:

We all know about the conversion method CEX>DEX and the apps/tutorials/guides published on the board but searching something specific about can result in another new thread asking for something that was already posted or just difficult to find what we are searching for. So i came up with a *idea* to do some *Unique* thread in order to you get the info about the method, and all that i found published so far on HAX about the conversion.

Thanks again to the one who dedicated hours, even days doing guides and tutorials about this. Keep in mind that neither I, or PS3HAX or even the members who made all of this to share with you are held responsable if anything happens to your PS3 system.

P.s: I will keep updating the thread and mirroring some files in order to get all about the conversion in ONE place. Organized and Clean ;) feel free to add any other guide/tool/app.

A couple of weeks ago, we posted here a rumour about a 4.20 firmware being released, well another rumour has the firmware due fro release tonight/early hours of tomorrow morning, here is a quote from the source:

PS3 System Software version 4.20 will be released on June 26 2012. This update will introduce a number of new features including:

    - When the wireless stereo headset (CECHYA-0080) is connected, you can now adjust the sidetone level for microphone audio. Select [Sidetone] under (Settings) > (Accessory Settings) > [Audio Device Settings].
-o Off: Disable microphone audio from the headset
-o 1-5: Enable microphone audio from the headset

    - You can now set the amount of time until the system automatically turns off. Under (Settings) > (Power Save Settings) > [System Auto-Off] you will be able amend the time for [Video/TV/Music/Photo] and for [Game/Other Features]:
Video/TV/Music/Photo - After 1 Hour, After 2 Hours, After 3 Hours, After 4 Hours, After 5 Hours, Off
Game/Other Features - After 1 Hour, After 2 Hours, After 3 Hours, After 4 Hours, After 5 Hours, Off
-o If you enabled [System Auto-Off] in system software prior to version 4.20, the selected time will be set for both [Video/TV/Music/Photo] and [Game/Other Features].
-o The default settings are [After 4 Hours] for [Video/TV/Music/Photo] and [After 1 Hour] for [Game/Other Features].

    - Under (Games) > (Saved Data Utility (PS3™), you can now select multiple saved data items, and then either delete or copy them as a group.
-o You cannot use [Copy Multiple] to select data that is copy-protected.
-o Some saved data cannot be copied.
-o The upper right corner of the screen displays:
===== the number of saved data items that are selected
===== the total number of saved data items
===== the total file size of the saved data items that are selected

Source NeoGaf(They don’t say how they got this info)

Well this can no longer be labeled a rumour, as the Official EU PS Blog have said this about the firmware.

Tomorrow we will be releasing a new system software update (v4.20) for PlayStation 3 which will include a few minor updates in order to strengthen functionality and improve your overall experience.

Firstly, we have revised specifications for the power-save mode in compliance with SCEE regulations. This means that the system will now, as default, be set to automatically turn off after 1 hour of no use.

These settings can, however, be manually adjusted via ‘System Auto-Off’ in the Settings on the XMB.

Also, as mentioned in our previous blog post, system software update (v4.10) added a feature that enabled you to hear your own voice through the “Wireless Stereo Headset” when playing multiplayer modes. This type of audio feedback is known as “sidetone”. Based on your comments, system software update (v4.20) will improve “sidetone” audio performance by giving you the option to select one out of five levels for microphone audio or give you the option to turn this feature off completely.

For those of you who use the “Wireless Stereo Headset “to watch Blu-ray or DVD movies on your PS3system, this system software update will also enable virtual surround sound functionality giving you a superior audio experience.

We have also improved saved data management. You will now be able to select multiple saved data items and delete them or copy them as a group.

Additional details will be available here tomorrow once the system software update is live.

For a few days, the PS3 Dev Wiki was down due to hosting problems and a lot of information seemed to be lost, but thanks to the hard work of the Wiki’s admin defyboy and a backup from a member called TMAnd, only a couple of days work was lost, you can read about it on this thread.

So thank you defyboy and TMAnd for rescuing all those precious edits :)

I would like to point out, that the PS3 Dev Wiki is a community effort, without the work and dedication of a lot of developers and PS3 enthusiasts, the wiki would be quite empty, so if you are doing work on the PS3, keep it documented on the Wiki :)

You can visit the Wiki here:
    PS3 Dev Wiki

I would like to give thanks to euss, deroad, defyboy, Lady Anne Blunt, sandungas and the many other editors who keep the Wiki alive.

PS3 firmware update 4.11 is now live. Besides improving “certain aspects” of the underlying system software, you can add this to the ever growing list of useless firmware updates because from what I can tell, it’s basically… Useless.

    To quote:

Later tonight we’ll be releasing an optional system software update (v4.11) for PlayStation 3. This minor firmware improves certain aspects of system software, and is not mandatory to connect to PSN.
Again, this update is optional in the US and Canada, and can be downloaded by selecting System Update from the Setting column of the XMB.

    [Direct download link to firmware]

    [VIA PSBlog]

Well it seems, that Sony have changed this ‘optional’ update to compulsory, as you must now update, in order to play online.
