Choppy mp3 playback

Well I have this wierd problem, the mp3 playback of my external HDD is all choppy while the output from cd's is perfectly fine..... any clues?
The output is from my LCD speakers via HDMI, the sound setting is the regular 44.1 KHz linear

probably because the file has to be read on the external and streamed via the usb, losing quality

try copying the song to the internal HDD, then they should sound better

I plug in my Sony Walkman mp3 and play songs and it works fine.
