ps3 case mod, a few questions :)
ok so i got a phat ps3 and im gona mod the case,
i have 4 little fans to mount inside which are linked and ready to solder and a 6 inch board with super bright blue and red leds with a switch to select what colour to have. i want to put the fans inside at the front and mount a switch on the side which will be wired to one of the usb ports and then i want to mount the led board behind the fans at the front and also have a 3 way switch on side for off/blue/red and wired to a usb port. i was then thinking i wanted to cut star in the top of the ps3 and get a heat gun and bend it out to make a bullet hole and the spray the case matte black and the inside of the hole red. so what way should i have the airflow, putting air in or sucking air out? and you think its a good idea to use usb's for power and what u think on the bullet hole thing...will it help cooling or shall i just make a round hole. i have watched vids of how to take apart so im just wanting your thoughts :) |
Don't use the USB to power your fans.
And is there a reason or problem with your PS3 that you are adding fans? Its quite pointless too (stock cooling does a great job). |
It aint a 360 it only needs the fans it comes with.
|
I like the idea of the bullet hole thing but make sure it won't mess with air flow efficiency and that whatever is inside can be painted.
And I agree with them, don't add fans unless you need to. If you want, maybe look at making a fan controller instead. |
the stock fan does do a great job but if you must add fans then i would suggest to add a temp probe so they come on when the system gets hot and will auto shut off when the system cools down (ie if your ps3 is still hot when its turned off the fans will still cool untill the system has cooled down). you can buy a rear clip on fan for the slim that does all this. maybe you could take the electronics out of this and put it inside your phat.
this is the fan:- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COOLING-FAN-PS...item3f09a76ed5 i would like to see the "bullet hole" i think that would look great :-) are you putting a grill in the hole (that could be made to look like the "bullet" is still stuck in the ps3?) |
For my mod i used the blu-ray power as my source and it works great.
The problem with usb is if the fans and LEDS are using too much power the USB socket won't work, there won't be enough power for the usb device. The bullet hole thing sounds great if you can do it properly. |
I think you'd be better of speeding up your internal fan instead of adding more (they'll ruin the airflow).. Bullet hole sounds cool though, but remember: measure twice, cut once!
I personally ran a 2nd power supply into my PS3 with lights etc running from it, then I can press a button (it could also be a switch) and they'll run at full speed for as long as I want. The benefit of a seperate power supply is no risk of damage to other components inside the PS3 from draining their power. Killerbug also has a neat method for doing this (3.3v convertor that taps into fans 12v), but it's not for adding lights, just for boosting your fan as I do. Just another oppinion.. |
thanks for all ur replys :)
ok im gona boi off the fans, im still gona do the bullet hole maybe with mesh :) but i now got a usb powered led bord with a switch so im gona mount that inside the hole and power from usb and hope it works out lol. |
Just make sure you post the pics :)
