Things to look for
Low voltage (helps from accidentally cooking a component)
Tiny tip capable (some things are tiny)
gun or iron is user preference

try radioshack

Here is a good basic kit for a beginner:
-Weller WP35 iron
-Chisel and pencil tips for WP35 iron (it does not eat tips like the radio shack irons do, but you will still want at least two of each tip so that your projects never get delayed by waiting for a replacement).
-Thin 63/37 solder, I like Kester 44.
-Decent quality de-soldering wick (not the radioshack garbage)
-Tip cleaner-tinner
-Small, good quality yellow sponge

What kind of rework are you planning on doing? I use a Weller WD1000 soldering station for cleaning up the underside of BGAs and pads on motherboard when reballing.

It is hands down the best one I have had (but not the best I have used), however it cost me £300, so I would expect it to be good. Low wattage just mean "less power reserve".

Mine is an 80w iron, but it is fully temperature controlled, so more power does not mean more heat, it just means more reserve heat for melting bigger things. Try and get a temperature controlled iron, 70w minimum, that is what is recommended for all lead free soldering.

Sure a smaller 40w iron will work for some things, but not all. What exactly are you wanting to use it for? Virtually all the components on PS3 are SMD and require IR or hot air for reworking, a soldering iron os neigh on useless by itself to fix any console.

However, whatever you get, I personally recommend Weller. They are the ONLY irons which have outlasted all my others, even the cheap £12 Weller I have still works, were as others have failed. However I believe all US Weller products are made in Mexico and are not up to the same standards as the ones we get here in the UK. All europian ones are made in Germany, and we all know that German build quality is 2nd to none.

ROFL...obviously you have never owned a German car...but yeah...their tools tend to be very nice.

Personally I like weller irons more for the tips than anything. Anyone can make a decent heating element and anyone can put high quality thermal control into them...but weller tips are just awesome. Short of jobs that require hot air or fields metal, 35W is more than enough for everything when you have a quality tip that actually transfers heat.
