General Linux Questions

Hey there, i turn to you forum-goers, for help regarding installation of Red Ribbon on my slim ps3.

I will update this first post with a Q&A as they are answered by you guys!

Q: Do i have to install a special kind of firmware to use Red Ribbon?
A: Yes, you will require either rebug otherOS++ or gitbrew's otherOS++

Q: will the installation delete anything on my hard drive?

so, lets begin with the basics;
Do i have to install a special kind of firmware to use Red Ribbon?

will the installation delete anything on my hard drive?

ok, thanks!

so, now i have just backed up my stuff and installed a new drive. i want everything to be as good as it can get before i start with this.
i installed rebug otherOS++ 3.55.2 and the rebug update package v0.2

looking at gitbrew, i found http://portal.gitbrew.org/wikibrew/PS3:OtherOS%2B%2B
should i use the guide at the bottom there?

vaalir 09-08-2011 07:46 PM

you know what? nevermind... i found 6 different tutorials for this stuff, AND rebug otherOS++ cfw makes so you cant play certain games, wich i play.. so i went back to kmeaw.. if someone knows of a way to install Red Ribbon on that, i would be glad to hear! as for now, i have 2 pc's with windows and 1 with buntu, so there was'nt any need for it, just wanted to play a little.

also, not to be nagging, but there wasnt exactly an abundance of help here. and believe me, i googled, as said; i found alot of guides, but none were consistent with eachother. like, from gitbrew, here and some other "legit" places. but, i guess i'll just keep on reading for a while, and ill figure this out, like i usually do :D

thanks to carldenning at least for some advice! this thread can be deleted.

Hi! I have Red Ribbon linux.. Can I copy files from linux to PS3 partition (folder hdd0)?

Mistawes 09-19-2011 05:39 AM

Just follow Gitbrew's tutorial from here: http://portal.gitbrew.org/wikibrew/PS3:OtherOS%2B%2B - Using a FW with SS patches causes problems with some games. You can install a FW that does not have those patches (you don't need them anyway) and your games will play like you're on Kmeaw.

Complete the "Install OtherOS on HDD (for all PS3 models)" section, REBOOT, then move to the partition section, then afterwards insert Red Ribbon RC5 on DVD (or extract to root of USB) and select it from Petitboot's main screen to install it (onto ps3dd2 partition with ps3dd1 as swap). You can input their commands by selecting "exit to shell" from Petitboot and typing with a USB keyboard.

That's how to install Linux on your PS3.. If you make an effort and get stuck, there are plenty people willing to help, but barely trying and saying you'll wait for a better tute ain't gonna inspire people to help! I've outlined how to do it (and linked the best guide there is) if you don't know some of the commands, Google them or else ask here or Gitbrew IRC.

@Judge_arm : I think FreeBSD can access your gameOS parition, Linux can't mount it IIRC.

It was created in 2006 by.... Sony, and was for OFW 3.15 max;)

It is already decrypted by graf_chokolo and used for OtherOS++ btw :)

More info in graf his bible: http://ps3crunch.net/hv-bible-releas...ids-house.html

Ah sorry, Saturday was my private time day, missed your post :)

Otheros.self is the install file for $ony OtherOS as I remember. There is no need for the otheros installer and it was also disabled after 3.15. $ony removed the option to install Linux.

Found some info after a fast search: http://wiki.ps2dev.org/ps3:linux:installing_gentoo

Go ahead and try to partition the HDD this way ;)

I'll PM you the info you asked :)
